A Family Trip to St. Augustine

If you feel restless, you’re not alone. This summer, I imagine a great many people will be taking road trips as they plan to get out of the house, get out of town, and decompress — if they haven’t done so already. You can count my family among those people. With National Road Trip Day on May 22, the weekend

chocolate, and blueberry lavender raspberry. And, St. Augustine beach is so wide and expansive. You can actually drive your car right onto the sand if you wish. While we did not do this, it was fun to see while splashing in the waves.

Of course, we spent time out and about seeing some of the famous sites. We visited the Old Jail and Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park. What I liked about the Fountain of Youth was that they had many open-air exhibits and places to explore. Given how busy everything was, this helped it feel a little less crowded. The only downside of the Fountain of Youth was that I didn’t walk away looking any younger. We also saw the old fort, Castillo de San Marcos. While we didn’t take an actual tour, it was still cool to see, considering it’s one of the oldest masonry forts in the country dating back to the 1600s. It’s fascinating to imagine everything that the fort has gone through over the centuries, taking part in so much history. Overall, we had an excellent trip and made some great memories in St. Augustine. It was nice to get some education mixed with fun. We saw some sights, spent plenty of time on the beach, and made the most of it, despite crowds and various COVID-19 restrictions. If you’re like me and have lived in Florida for years, or all of your life, and you haven’t had a chance to visit St. Augustine, I encourage you to take the opportunity. There’s plenty to see, plenty to eat, and it makes a great weekend trip!

before Memorial Day weekend, I thought I’d share a recent road trip I took with my family. We went up to St. Augustine, the oldest city in Florida and the United States, having been occupied since the 1500s. Although I’ve lived in Florida over 20 years, I had never visited St. Augustine until this trip. When I was younger, I remember hearing all about it with it’s rich history and many points of interest, some of which have been standing for centuries. However, I still didn’t know quite what to expect as a visitor. From the moment we arrived, I quickly understood why this charming little town is worth the visit. Apparently, many other travelers felt the same way as St. Augustine, and it’s attractions were bustling! In fact, despite the lingering presence of the pandemic, the town was so busy that we ended up skipping some of the sights due to crowds. But that was okay, as we still had a great time and managed to see many wonderful things. Surprisingly, it wasn’t just the historical sites that caught our attention; the food and beaches of St. Augustine were both delightful as well. One of the more unique food items we enjoyed were the Hyppo Gourmet Ice Pops. These were no ordinary popsicles with flavors like Mexican hot chocolate, avocado dark

CARACCIDENTAND NO INSURANCE? Here’s What Happens Next

“I was in a car accident and I don’t have insurance. What happens next if it wasn’t my fault?” This is a common question. If you were involved in an automobile accident as a passenger and you don’t have insurance, you don’t have to worry if the driver of the vehicle you were in did not cause the accident. As a passenger involved in a car accident in Florida, you are entitled to personal injury protection (PIP) benefits that can cover most medical bills. Additionally, you may make a claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance for any bodily injury damage. However, if you were involved in an automobile accident and you own a car without insurance , you may face criminal implications. Driving without insurance is illegal in Florida and it’s a serious problem that could result in the suspension or revocation of your driver’s license. If you do not alert the police of your accident and attempt to make a claim against the other driver after the accident, your claim may be rejected. It’s best to alert the police of any automobile accident just for the purpose of being on the record.

If you make a claim against the other driver later, the other driver’s insurance can deny that the accident occurred without a police record present. While calling the police may implicate you of a crime, it is best to do so, especially if you believe you are injured. If your driver’s license and registration are suspended for failure to carry auto insurance, contact an experienced criminal defense attorney who can review your case and help to reinstate your license.

What happens if you are involved in a car accident with a vehicle that is not yours? While you may not own a vehicle (which means you have no insurance) there is a good chance the vehicle itself may be insured. If you have permission to be in use of the vehicle, you will be covered under the vehicle owner’s insurance policy. If you own a vehicle and have not insured it, you will not be entitled to the other person’s insurance for PIP benefits, but you can still make a claim against them for bodily injury damage.

Cooking With Ashley

ShavedAsparagus Salad

Tangy citrus and salty Parmesan cheese complement earthy, fresh asparagus, a favorite spring vegetable with a short growing season.

Ingredients

• • • •

1 lb asparagus spears 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tsp Dijon mustard

• • • •

3/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

1/2 tsp kosher salt

1/8 tsp red pepper flakes

3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Directions

1. With a vegetable peeler, shave each asparagus spear from tip to base. This is easiest to do if the asparagus is on a flat surface. 2. Place shaved asparagus in a bowl and blot off excess moisture with a paper towel. 3. In a separate bowl, make a vinaigrette by whisking together lemon juice, Dijon mustard, and olive oil. 4. Pour vinaigrette over shaved asparagus and add Parmesan cheese, salt, red pepper flakes, and black pepper. Toss to combine. Taste and adjust seasonings.

3 Tips for RVing on a Budget

And Save Money on Your Summer Road Trip Become a Savvy RV User

Save on Fuel Fuel could be your biggest expense, but you can cut down on the inevitable by driving slower than 60 mph when it’s safe to do so. Once you hit 60 mph or above in your RV, your gas mileage

This past fall, RV manufacturers reported a 31% increase in sales compared to 2019. This was no doubt related to an effort to stave off the spread of COVID-19, which had more families opting to take road trips and camp instead of going on tropical and European vacations. While the great outdoors can be the perfect affordable backdrop for family vacations, it doesn’t come without a cost.

will drop. Furthermore, you can keep your gas bill in check by sticking to trips within your state, planning your route to avoid unnecessary detours, and leaving early to miss the traffic. Each little action could make a big impact on your fuel bill. Re-Use Items in Your Home You may have a long to-buy list for your RV, but not everything on there may be necessary. Before splurging on the latest gear, consider what you have in your home. Use old kitchen utensils and plates, cleaning supplies, bedding, and entertainment items like books and toys in your RV to save money and clear some clutter from your home. It’s a win-win!

You can hit the road without your bank account taking a hit with these three must-do tips!

Stay for Free If you’re on a cross-country adventure, you will need a place to park and rest each night before continuing your adventure the next day. Rather than shelling out money every night, consider free options. Search for public land that’s part of the Bureau of Land Management or in a Wildlife Management Area

that allows overnight camping. Walmart allows RV parking at no cost, but some locations pose safety concerns. To mitigate this, well- meaning RVers have listed Walmart locations with red flags. You can check them out at AllStays.com.
