Quad Cities-Style Pizza – ANDWHY IT’S AWESOME

Happy National Pizza Month!

I’m from Illinois — so when the topic of pizza comes up, most people tend to think that Chicago-style pizza would be my favorite. Although I greatly enjoy Chicago-style, I didn’t grow up eating pizzas like that. I was born and raised along the Iowa border in Moline, Illinois. Moline is one of the “Quad Cities,” which consists of four cities in Iowa and Illinois: Rock Island and Moline in Illinois and Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa. The Quad Cities region has its own unique style of pizza, and it was this style that served as a weekly staple in my home growing up! When you grow up eating regional dishes, you just don’t assume they’re regional. You think, “Oh, this is how it is everywhere.” It wasn’t until I went away to college at Indiana University in Bloomington that I realized how unique and delicious the Quad Cities pizza style was compared to the widely popular Domino’s that filled most dorms my freshman year. As it turns out, not many people know Quad Cities-style pizza even exists. If you’re not familiar, there are very distinct differences from my hometown pizza and the pizza you might get at Domino’s. First, there’s malt in the crust, which gives the crust a different texture and a toastier, nuttier flavor. Second, at least at my favorite Quad Cities pizza chain, Happy Joe’s Pizza, you’ll often find both mozzarella and cheddar cheese on top of your pizza. Third, you’ll usually find the cheese on top of your toppings. There are other important differences that set Quad Cities pizza apart. The pizza is cut in strips rather than slices; at Harris Pizza (a household name in the Quad Cities), they actually use scissors to cut their pies. When you bite into a Quad Cities-style pizza, you may also notice that the tomato sauce isn’t as sweet as it is spicy, since it’s often made with cayenne pepper or red chili flakes.

Perhaps my favorite Quad Cities pizza franchise, Happy Joe’s Pizza, has some amazing, uniquely topped pizzas, too. Their taco pizza has actual refried beans on it alongside taco beef, sausage, Dorito-style chips, lettuce, tomato, onion, and taco sauce. My all-time favorite, however, is their barbecue pizza. It doesn’t have barbecue chicken, but traditional Midwestern barbecued beef. It’s absolutely fantastic! Most sausage Quad Cities-style pizzas use a Midwestern sausage produced by the local favorite butchery Stashu & Son’s — although they went out of business after a fire in 2018, their style of sausage is still popularly used, especially at Harris Pizza. Living in Florida now, I don’t get to have Quad Cities pizza very often, but thankfully Happy Joe’s will deliver across state borders. On special occasions like my birthday or during the holidays, my sister gifts me my pizza favorites from home so I get my cravings satisfied at least once a year. My pizza palette has expanded over the years to include some of our local South Florida options that are typically New York style. In fact, we have New York’s famous Grimaldi’s Pizzeria only a few minutes from our firm, and I really enjoy their pizza, too. The only problem is that you have to eat it fast since the slices are thin enough to cool down right away, and they don’t reheat perfectly. I guess that’s a small price to pay for delicious pizza, though.

10.0

Still, Quad Cities-style pizza will always have my heart. I’ll definitely be craving it this October because it’s National Pizza Month!

4 Deep-Cleaning Hacks to Prep for the Holidays You Can Use WHAT to Tidy Up?!

Cleaning Balls Utilizing tennis balls for your house chores may sound strange. However, when drying a bulky bed comforter in your dryer, adding a few tennis balls will ensure the stuffing does not gather all to one side. The balls help keep everything nice and even. Pillowcases and Fans Your ceiling fans collect all of the nasties — dirt, dust, bugs, and allergens. For an easy way to clean them without spreading all the grime around your home, turn to old pillowcases! Simply slip the pillowcase over each individual fan blade and then wipe. All of the debris will end up in the pillowcase itself.

Prepping for the holidays is exciting and fun, but it requires tons of planning, cooking, decorating, and cleaning. To avoid getting bogged down while preparing for cheerful celebrations with friends and family, try these easy ways to get your house sparkling clean and ready to host.

Roll the Ceilings When it comes to ceilings, especially if they are textured, thoroughly cleaning off dust, dander, and cobwebs can be challenging. When you use a broom, chunks typically go

flying around and make a larger mess. However, if you whip out a painting roller, dampen it, and roll your ceilings just like you are painting, you are sure to get the job done!

A clean home is the key to happy living and is paramount for hosting over the holidays. With these tricks up your sleeve, you are now a cleaning expert!

“I was recommended Attorney Matthew Konecky through an old friend of his. I had a civil issue that was just on the tip of being criminal. However, if it weren’t for the glory of God, he would have not placed Matthew’s services in my path. Matthew is professional, courteous, and knowledgeable and definitely knew his stuff. Additionally, he is honestly transparent, something that sets him apart from attorneys in his particular practice of law. I highly recommend Matthew above any attorney in Palm Beach. You won’t regret it.” –Carlos R. AMESSAGE FROM THE FAITHFUL Socks on Your Hands Have you ever run a finger along a panel of your blinds and it comes up black? Blinds tend to be huge dust collectors. By throwing some socks on your hands, you can get back to clean blinds. All you have to do is find a pair of old socks, “glove up,” and dampen them. From there, if you grip each individual blind panel and slide your hand along the length of it, you will gather tons of nasty dirt and dust onto the sock.

WHEN CAN POLICE LAWFULLY SEARCH MY CAR? Learn About Probable Cause

Can the Police Search My Car During a DUI Stop? Showing signs of impairment or having an open container next to you is enough probable cause for the police to search your vehicle. While a warrant is needed to search private property, this rule does not apply to the search of a vehicle after a lawful arrest. It also does not apply to items in plain view. Police are also freely allowed to search your vehicle if they have towed or impounded it. However, any evidence which was illegally obtained will be thrown out in court and cannot be used against you — including if their judgment for reasonable cause was faulty. Please give our firm a call if you believe your car has been stopped and searched in an unlawful manner. DUIs are no small matter, and we will fight every injustice to help you with your case.

Most DUI charges in the state of Florida stem from a basic traffic stop. What many drivers do not realize is that even though the police may suspect you of driving under the influence, they must have reasonable suspicion in order to pull you over. Finding Probable Cause If you find the police may be following you but have not made an attempt to pull you over, they may be looking for a reason to do so. And yes, they can easily find one in most cases. Some of the most common traffic infractions in Florida include:

• • •

Speeding Illegal tint

• • •

Taillight(s) or tag light out

Broken windshield

Red light/stop sign violations

Severely damaged vehicle

During an encounter with the police in Florida, after being pulled over for a traffic stop, the officer will immediately make certain observations. They will look for signs of impairment such as the odor of alcohol, open containers in the vehicle, or slurred speech. If the officer sees any of these signs, they have the right to ask you to step out of the vehicle for further investigation. Thus, for an officer to make this determination, they must believe that the circumstances and facts within their available knowledge would lead a reasonable person to believe two things: A criminal offense has been committed and the potential arrestee committed the offense.

Cooking With Ashley

Slow Cooker Pumpkin Steel-Cut Oats

Ingredients

• • • • • •

1 cup steel-cut oats 2 tbsp chia seeds

• •

2 1/2 cups water

2 cups milk (I used unsweetened almond milk) Optional toppings: additional maple syrup, toasted pecans, chia seeds, chopped apple, or chocolate chips

2 tsp pumpkin pie spice 2 tsp ground cinnamon 1 cup pumpkin purée 1/4 cup maple syrup

Directions

1. Spray your slow cooker generously with cooking spray. Place all ingredients into the slow cooker and cook on low for 8 hours or overnight. Note: To prevent the edges from burning, place a large heatproof dish into the slow cooker and add all ingredients into the dish. Fill the slow cooker with water until it’s 2 inches from the top of the dish. 2. It’s normal to see chia seeds all over the top of the oats after cooking. Simply stir the oats well before serving and serve with your choice of toppings. Enjoy!

How the MLB Helped Create Disney+

Thanks, Bud! Baseball’s Former Commissioner and Streaming TV

You don’t become America’s national pastime without learning how to adapt — and Major League Baseball (MLB) made the ultimate pivot.

other popular sports leagues like World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and the National Hockey League (NHL). (It even assisted HBO!)

This October, MLB’s biggest stars and teams with the most wins all-time will take the field for the 2021 playoffs. The winners will be crowned champions of the world, but the league these champs call home already owns an equally prestigious title: the founders of streaming services. Their legendary reign started back in the early 2000s, when former MLB commissioner Bud Selig asked every team in the league to contribute $4 million for the creation of Baseball Advanced Media (BAM). At that time, the dot-com bubble had yet to burst, and Selig wanted America’s once favorite sport to “keep up with the times,” so to speak. BAM created a website for each team, but it soon took on other qualities that gave it an edge. The Hustle reports that BAM offered online video, multidevice watching services, and a large >Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4
