WHY IS MANUAL HANDLING IMPORTANT? Incorrect manual handling is one of the most common causes of injury at work . Work related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD’s) account for over a third of all workplace injuries.

MSD’S ACCOUNT FOR OVER ONE THIRD OF WORKPLACE INJURIES

WHAT ARE YOUR DUTIES AS AN EMPLOYER? As an employer, the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 require you to: • Avoid the need for hazardous manual handling (as reasonably practicable) • Assess the risk of injury from any hazardous manual handling task • Reduce the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling

I’VE HEARD OF TILE – WHAT IS IT?

TILE is an acronym for Task, Individual, Load and Environment and is used to help you carry out a manual handling risk assessment.

LOAD Is the load heavy, difficult to grip, sharp, hot or cold?

TASK Does the manual handling task involve twisting, bending, pushing or pulling?

INDIVIDUAL Is the person

ENVIRONMENT Are there space constraints, uneven flooring, slippery flooring etc

pregnant, disabled, suffering from health problems or a young person?

HOWDO I ENSURE MY EMPLOYEES ARE FIT FOR THEIR MANUAL HANDLING ROLE?

You can implement a health surveillance programme that includes musculoskeletal assessments.

Musculoskeletal assessments evaluate whether your employees have the agility and flexibility to undertake tasks such as working in confined spaces or crouching, bending, lifting and carrying.
