TELEHEALTH FOR MENTAL HEALTH CARE IS HERE TO STAY

T elehealth has not only been crucial during the pandemic, but often also advantageous even as many clinicians are again seeing patients in-person. Telehealth is uniquely suited to mental health services and benefit patients who can access care from their homes with more options for safety, privacy, and convenience. During the pandemic, telemedicine proved to be an important asset for the healthcare because it enabled doctor-patient contacts – without physical presence, and thus without risk of infection. According to new research from Oregon Health and Science University, the COVID-19 pandemic likely permanently increased the delivery of mental health counselling through telehealth and that online mental health counselling will continue well beyond the pandemic. “Future applications of tele- mental health should really be focused on understanding the population, context and disease conditions most conducive to this method,” said lead author Jane Zhu, M.D., Assistant Professor, Medicine, at the OHSU School of Medicine. Even before the pandemic, earlier studies raised the potential for improving access to care for those living in areas defined as lacking health professionals. In addition, studies have shown a high satisfaction among patients who don’t necessarily need a detailed in-person physical exam or laboratory testing often required for medical or surgical care. And even after the pandemic, whenever and however it ends telemedicine and other consumer-facing health technology adoption is here to stay.
