Do We Football... Do We Not? That Is the Question. For Me, at Least. The Pittman CONNECTION The Newsletter About Your Health And Caring For Your Body

Thismonth, I may spark some conversation. If you want to dialogue after reading this, jump on the Pittman PT Facebook page (fb.com/Pittmanpt). Summer is gone and school is starting back up. It is going to be a lot different this year. We signed our kids up to go back to school. Then we were informed that it was going to be a hybrid system with them only going 2 days a week. We have to make a pivot in our plans. As do a lot of you. I just hope that my wife doesn’t go crazy on the three homeschool/virtual days. The kids have been out of school for so long, I hope they remember how to do it. Kid catch up. Brinkley has been dancing as usual. She had a great intensive at Studio 413. She is getting so big. Sophie is choreographing her solo this year. I can’t wait to see it and post it for you guys towatch. Foster just finished up baseball and is starting Football. More on that below. Stone worked a little this summer. It was just enough manual labor tomake himget really serious about what hewanted todo in college, take some classes and focus a bit. Sophie has been home all summer. LA is still shut down. We aren’t sure what is going to happen with that, but she has been really busy working on her online classes at Memphis, selling customshirts and teaching classes. The Lord only knows what is in store for her. We did start football conditioning and man, you should’ve seen those boys. Want to see what 5 months of staying inside and playing Playstation will do to a group, come on out. Wow!!! Foster almost (he said he was so close) puked. And he is in decent shape. As far as I know at this point, he will only have 5-6 games though, if that even happens. It will all depend on how the first few weeks of school goes I guess. Will we have college football??? The SEC is waiting til the last minute to make that decision. I get pretty opinionated on certain things. People

often disagree with me and the discussions are wonderful. I personally feel that we need football. We need it as a society. We need it for our sanity. We need something to cheer for. And the economy needs it. College football is a billion dollar industry. How many families are impacted by the loss of income from closing the sport. As far as I know, only Billionaire Mark Cuban has said that he was going to take care of his staff, down to the person that serves the popcorn at his arena. As for the rest of the people, themoney is real. Youmay disagree with me. That’s OK. With that being said, I posted something on Facebook the other day and I wanted to share it. In the midst of all of the confusion, controversy, anger, frustration, and concern over the pandemic and return to school, it is clear that the old saying is true. You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time. Our leadership is doing the best that they can given the circumstances that we are in. We can complain that our specific needs aren’t beingmet as good as we would like, but I just remember, IT IS NOT ABOUT ME! It is about doing what is best for the masses. I trust that the powers that be have taken all of the information that is given and done what is best for the masses. We have to remember that public schools, unlike private schools, ultimately have to follow the public school, county, and state mandates. Private schoolshavemorewiggle room. Support our community. It is a choice to look at the negatives or to look at the positives. I choose to look at the positives. Thank you teachers, administration, and Town of Collierville Leaders! Jeremy

If you are one of the 15percent of the general population that suffers from migraines, you know that the worst part is feeling helpless. Whether you feel helpless when it comes to preventing amigraine or helplesswhen it comes to treating amigraine, you can’t help but feel enslaved by a condition that causes 91 percent of sufferers to miss work or other daily activities. Fortunately, the solution for migraine management may be simpler than you think. What is a Migraine? According to the AmericanMigraine Foundation, amigraine attack is not considered a headache but a neurological disease. Nearly twice as many women as men are affected by migraines. Attacks are usually characterized by painful throbbing or pulsing on one side of the head, usually accompanied by changes in vision, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, or sensitivity to sound. Migraine attacks usually begin in childhood but can begin during adolescence or early adulthood. What Causes a Migraine Attack? One of the most frustrating parts of a migraine is that there is no definitive cause, therefore there is no definitive cure. Some researchers believe that a migraine is caused by changes in the chemicals in the brain that regulate pain. Others feel that problems in the brainstem and its interaction with certain neural pathways cause migraines. Still others believe environmental factors play a role in migraines. Diet, exercise, light, heat, stress, medication, or

changes in sleep can all affect whether a person experiences a migraine attack. Other risk factors include age, family history of migraine and hormonal changes due to puberty or menopause. How is a Migraine Traditionally Treated? Since there is no definitive cause for migraine attacks, most physicians focus on limiting the duration or severity of a person’s symptoms. Medications are often prescribed that either target a person’s serotonin levels or relieve pain, but stomach problems due to frequent NSAID use or medication overuse sometimes result. Many of these medications are also most effective before a person is in pain. If they react to the warning symptoms that a migraine attack is coming, many times they can avoid the worst of their symptoms. Physical Therapy Can Help Migraine Sufferers Since there is no definitive cause for migraine attacks, most physicians focus on limiting the duration or severity of a person’s symptoms. What’s Been Happening Around the CLINIC! Physical therapy targeted at migraines may include neck flexion exercises, postural exercises and recommendations for work or school accommodations that may help limit migraine frequency or severity. Additionally, regular aerobic exercise has been shown to reduce tension in the muscles that may be related to migraine symptoms. It can also help a person maintain a healthy weight that is essential to balancing hormone levels that may also contribute to migraines. Physical therapists are adept at prescribing customized exercise programs for every fitness level. of motion in the patient’s neck. This may include joint mobilization techniques, massage, physical therapy, or pressure point therapy. These manual therapy techniques reduce pain, but they also keep the head and neck moving the way they should. Manual therapies, especially massage, have also been shown to help migraine sufferers sleep better and experience attacks less frequently. Exercise

While there is no definitive cure for migraines, physical therapy is among themost promising ways to manage your symptoms both now and in the future. Drug-free manual therapies coupled with targeted exercise at the hands of a physical therapist may be the key to managing the frequency, duration and severity of your migraine attacks. 1. Trick yourself into exercising. It can be hard to find the time to exercise throughout the day – so try sneaking it in! Opt for the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator. Exit the bus one stop early and walk. Park farther from your destination. Maintain your yard. Take the dog on walks with the whole family. Walk up and down the field while your children are playing sports. 2. Maintain a healthy diet. Maintaining a healthy diet doesn’t mean you aren’t allowed to spoil yourself with treats every now and then. Nutrition is all about balance – so just make sure you balance those treats with some healthier choices. This includes: • Snack smart. Instead of those pretzels, grab some peanuts. Snacking keeps you at your best so that you can sustain your energy and stay positive. • Avoid “meal skips.” Eating consistently provides your mind and body with the fuel necessary to help you get and stay active. It also helps you avoid your blood sugar dropping. • Implement Uncle Sam’s recipe for health. “What is this?” you may ask – it is essentially the following: lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products; some lean meats or meat substitutes, including beans, eggs and nuts; andminimal saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt, and added sugars. 3. Stay positive. If you go in with a positive mindset, exercise and eating right will become significantly easier. Research shows that a positive attitude can boost your immune system and increase your energy levels. Even if you aren’t really excited about getting up to go for a run, your body will believe what you think. 4. Ask for help! REPEAT TRUNK FLEXION TO FLOOR

Place one foot in front of your other in a heel to toe position. Maintain your balance. Return to starting position and repeat. Attempt this exercise alternating the opposite foot in front. For an added challenge while in this stance, slowly turn your head to the left and hold for 3 seconds. Repeat by turning your head to the right, up, and down, all of which holding for 3 seconds.
