ANCC Foundation Did You Know?
Celebrity Golf tournaments The
Trial Membership In the summers of 1949 and 1950 the ANCC hosted two golf tournaments featuring nationally known celebrities from the fields of entertainment, sports and federal government. Sponsored by the Washington Post, the proceeds went to the Justice Department in its campaign to fight juvenile delinquency. At the 1948 tournament hosted by the Columbia Country Club, Bing Crosby highlighted the show. He joined Bob Hope and Arthur Godfrey in the limelight at ANCC in 1949. Celebrity foursomes made up with luminaries such as Bob Hope, General Omar Bradley, Dr. Cary Middlecoff, and Del Webb playing together. The scorers for the tournament were two ladies rather well known in their own right; Jane Russel and Eunice Kennedy. The 1950 Tournament, again sponsored by the Washington Post, brought out another imposing list of playing celebrities from all backgrounds. Bob Hope was the 1950 Honorary Chairman and incidentally, that year’s Celebrity Champion. Among the other players in 1950 were Milton Berle, Perry Como, Ben Hogan and Louise Suggs. Unfortunately, the club membership rejected the 1951 event on the basis that damage to the course during the tournament was too costly to repair. In a 1989 letter, Bob Hope fondly recalled the 1950 tournament and extended his best wishes to ANCC. For more information about the Celebrity Tournaments, the players, and ANCC history, please click here . The Army Navy Country Club Annual Meeting will be held on Monday, 2 October 2017 at the Arlington Clubhouse. At the meeting, we will elect Resident Members to the Board of Governors to serve for the period October 2017 to October 2020. Our By-Laws provide that only Resident Members may stand for election to the Board. At this year’s Annu- al Meeting, we are presently scheduled to elect 17 Governors. We will elect 6 Governors from those Resident Members who are on Active Duty or Selected Reserve Resident status. We will elect 11 Governors from those Resident Members who are in the All Others status. We will ensure that nomination forms are available in the Administration Office and on the Club's website no later than Friday, 30 June 2017. To ensure the publication of the nomination in the Annual Meeting Packet, we must receive the nomination no later than Tuesday, 1 August 2017. We will permit nominations from the floor at the Annual Meeting, but please advise me of any such notifications prior to the meeting so I can ensure the floor nomination is of a qualified Resident Member. The use of military rank for nomination and election purposes is permissible under Title 10 of the US Code. For example, an Active Duty army officer identify may identify herself in the form of “CPT Jane Doe, USA,” and a retired army officer may identify herself as “CPT Jane Doe, USA (Ret.).
