WHICH WORKOUT WILL HELP YOU MEET YOUR GOALS? Sweat Smart

MEET OUR COMPASSIONATE DENTAL ASSISTANT, SHELBY PERSONS Continuing a Tradition

The dental field has always been part of Shelby Persons’ life. “So, my mom and my older sister were both dental assistants,” Shelby says. “I’ve been around dentistry my whole life. I just followed in my mom’s and sister’s footsteps.” Shelby grew up in Lebanon, Oregon, and completed her degree at Linn-Benton Community College in 2012. For the past five years, she has served as a dental assistant on the Calapooia Family Dental team. Typically, Shelby manages the operations of our clinical dentistry

With hot yoga, barre, Pilates, weightlifting, kickboxing, and more, personal fitness companies offer every workout you need to stay in shape. But sometimes, having dozens of choices can be more anxiety- inducing than having just a few. When it comes to finding the right workout to help you reach your goal, whether it’s weight loss, better balance, or more muscle, it’s best to seek advice from the experts.

Drop It Like a Pound

setting, and she also assists our team in the back office. The most rewarding part of her job, Shelby says, is the work she does with patients with special needs. “I like to work with the folks with special needs. It’s nice and rewarding to help them when not many people can,” Shelby says. “In the beginning, it was overwhelming because it’s very different than normal dentistry until you can figure out their needs.” Shelby has become one of our more well-known and respected dental experts at area hospitals. She and the patients often get along very well, and we have noticed that she is great at walking each patient through their appointment. It’s a unique skill that our patients and providers cherish. But that’s not all that makes Shelby unique! She is also the proud owner of a horse, Lulu, whom she boards at her grandparents’ home. Shelby grew up around horses, and she would frequently help her grandparents by cleaning up after the racehorses they raised and boarded. But when her grandparents retired from raising and training racehorses, Shelby says she didn’t enjoy that she was barely seeing her grandparents anymore. And what was Shelby’s solution to this problem? To buy a horse. Since then, Shelby spends nearly everyday with her grandparents and Lulu. Back at home, Shelby and her husband, Geoffrey, are the proud owners of a husky named Kiera and a cat named Murphy. Geoffrey and Shelby spend a majority of their free time together or with their families. Whether it’s tending to our patients with special needs, caring for Lulu, or spending time with her family, Shelby’s dedication is second to none! Keep up the great work, Shelby.

When it comes to weight loss, full-body workouts, like swimming, running, and cycling, are the most effective. “The more muscles you have to incorporate, the more calories you’re going to burn because those muscles all require energy in order to work,” Nike Master Trainer Holly Rilinger told SELF magazine. Regardless of the activity you choose, Rilinger recommends interval training as the best method. By combining bursts of intense effort with periods of active rest, you can keep your heart rate jumping and those calories burning. The words “balance” and “workout” are generally associated with yoga, and while it’s true that yogis are champions of standing on one foot, so are martial artists. According to an article published by the martial arts academy chain Evolve MMA, “Martial arts works out the entire body, from the base, to the upper torso, to the all-important core ... Practicing martial arts will improve your balance, which then, of course, improves the quality of your life.” By incorporating martial arts and yoga into your workout regimen, you’ll be able to perform impressive party tricks and stay on your feet if you lose your balance. Wax On, Wax Off For building muscle and increasing your strength, nothing beats weightlifting, whether you’re using dumbbells at home or machines at the gym. Lifting weights also helps burn fat. Speaking with SELF, Rilinger called the practice “the mother of all weight loss techniques, the highest in the workout food chain, the top of the totem pole.” Of course, the most important thing to consider when choosing a workout is whether you enjoy it enough to squeeze it into your schedule. If you resent every drop of sweat, it will undoubtedly take you longer to reach your goal than if you look forward to the challenge. Do You Even Lift, Bro?

What’s the Deal With Fluoride?

HOW IS FLUORIDE AFFECTING YOUR ORAL HEALTH

Anywhere from 66%–74.6% of the U.S. population has fluoridated public water, according to the Centers for Disease Control. With that in mind, it’s only natural that questions and concerns may arise. Here are some facts about fluoride that should put those worries to rest. FLUORIDE BENEFITS Fluoride can fight tooth decay in multiple ways. The first benefit is enamel remineralization, which is when the fluoride is absorbed by the enamel on your teeth. This attracts minerals to your teeth, maintaining their strength. The second benefit is that fluoride converts some of the hydroxyapatite — what your tooth enamel is primarily made of — to fluorapatite, which is more acid-resistant. Because of these benefits, in 2015, the Department of Health and Human Services issued a recommendation that optimal fluoride levels should be in drinking water to prevent tooth decay. When left untreated, tooth decay can lead to several serious health problems, including infections that can spread to the jaw. USING WELL WATER? NO WORRIES If you live in the Willamette Valley, and use well water, chances are your water is not fluoridated (if you are unsure, have your well professionally tested). While fluoride in our water provides some benefits for adults, the biggest benefits are seen in children. That’s because the fluoride is incorporated into

the teeth as they form. If your children primarily drink well water without fluoride, your pediatrician or dentist can provide daily fluoride supplements. WHY YOUR DENTIST PUSHES FLUORIDE The reason why you may see dentists pushing fluoride is because it really works. In the long run, you will

spend more time in their offices if you’re on a well-water system or if you are not utilizing those fluoride-based toothpastes. Fluoride has been proven to reduce community tooth decay by 20%–40%. Former Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy touched on how effective it has been in our oral health, saying, “Fluoride’s effectiveness in preventing tooth decay extends throughout one’s life, resulting in fewer — and less severe — cavities …” To find out more tips and tricks to maintain your oral health, don’t hesitate to visit us at CalapooiaFamilyDental.com, or call 541-926-3689 to schedule your next appointment!

GRILLED SWEET POTATO WEDGES

I have received numerous requests for my grilled sweet potato wedges

after the July newsletter. So, by popular demand, here it is! I

adapted this recipe from the amazing Rick Bayless, and it works great on tri-tip and steaks, as well.

INGREDIENTS • Sweet potatoes • 2 tbsp olive oil For the rub:

• 1 tbsp garlic salt • 1 tbsp ground black pepper • 1 tbsp brown sugar • 1 tsp oregano • 1/2 tsp ground cumin

• 1/3 cup chili powder • 3 tbsp garlic powder

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Heat grill to medium-high heat. 2. Cut sweet potatoes into wedges no more than 1-inch thick 3. Coat wedges in olive oil in a bowl. 4. Toss wedges in rub, making sure to cover all surfaces. 5. Place wedges on the grill for 10 minutes, turn, and cook another 10 minutes. The wedges are done when they feel soft when poked with a fork. 6. Serve plain (my favorite) or with a spicy ketchup for added zing.

Happy grilling!

AMERICA’S WEIRDEST AIRBNBS This Ain’t Motel 6!

ManCave Apartment/ Airplane Hangar Geneva, Florida Airbnb super hosts

When Airbnb was founded a little over a decade ago, the developers hoped to provide an alternative to traditional travel accommodations. Today, with annual revenue in the billions, the service is an industry unto itself. While most people use Airbnb to “live like a local” while traveling, you can find some truly wacky lodging options if you spend some time searching the platform. Here are just a few of the many contenders for the title of “Weirdest Airbnb in the U.S.” For ease of searching, the listings here have the same titles as they do on Airbnb. Brand New Studio Earthship Taos, New Mexico Earthships, houses run by clean energy and featuring reused materials, are a fixture of the Taos area. This one, which looks almost like a crashing wave with a living space in its undertow, combines the rustic charm of truly getting away from it all with modern amenities like Wi-Fi and in-home laundry. It’s a truly unique living space surrounded by pristine nature and not far from the historic Taos Pueblo.

Dan and Deborah have no shortage of quirky properties for rent — including yurts and treehouses — but their apartment fashioned out of an airplane hangar surely takes the cake. You’d be forgiven for thinking it was a theme restaurant featuring eclectic aviation. Memorabilia lines the walls with a bar front and center, and the bed is in a loft high above the ground.

Dog Bark Park Inn B&B Cottonwood, Idaho

As you approach the Dog Bark Park Inn, you won’t have to guess if you’re in the right place. After all, how many buildings are shaped like beagles? When describing the space on Airbnb, the hosts make no bones about who this rental is aimed for. “Stay in a giant dog!” they say. In addition to being inside a massive wooden dog, you’ll find canine-themed games, books, and more. Talk about ruffing it.
