I Spent 4 Days at Pine Valley Golf Course A World Class Golf Course, Rated No. 1 in Golf Magazine

As my friends and I drove to the gorgeous Pine Valley Golf Club on a Thursday to check in and play the Par-3 Short Course, we looked at each other with an amazed expression that read, simply, “ Pinch me — I can’t believe we’re actually here.” If you aren’t familiar, Golf Magazine rates Pine Valley Golf Club No. 1 in the world, and it’s considered one of the most unique courses of all time. Almost every golf course has a “signature hole”designed to be more challenging and prettier than the rest. At Pine Valley, every single hole could be considered a “signature hole” at any other golf course in the world. Yet, for the same reason, no championships or tournaments (except for the 1985Walker Cup) are hosted there. Interestingly, every hole is also enclosed with woods, so you can’t see or predict what the next hole looks like. This golf course doesn’t just have unique and extremely challenging holes, but it also requires membership. There are only two ways to play at Pine Valley — be a club member (which requires you have certain golf skills) or be a club member’s guest (which was our case). So, playing Pine Valley was a trip of a lifetime. My friends and I spent months anticipating spending four fantastic days at Pine Valley. Most people who play Pine Valley may spend one day playing the course, but we managed the full experience of staying at the Centennial House, an eight-bedroom house, the biggest on property, and eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the clubhouse. We never left Pine Valley and were plenty entertained putting on the backyard putting green and playing the short course in the afternoons. One of the most notable things about Pine Valley is that, for all its prestige, it’s not an ostentatious place. The Clubhouse has not changed over the years, and most of the staff have worked there for decades. It’s simply a very old establishment with a well-organized, refined way of running. I’m quite confident you won’t find a golf course with better service (sorry Turtle). Staying there was a golfer’s dream. Unfortunately, for the first three days we were there, it was extremely hot with no breeze until a storm came through the night before our last round. It finally cooled to the mid-80s with light humidity and a pleasant breeze.

The oppressive heat didn’t stop one from our group from getting a hole in one on the first day, and it was his first ever hole in one, too! The best part was when, during dinner, the Pine Valley staff presented him with the flag that was on the hole as a gift. It is a tradition at Pine Valley to present the flag to those lucky enough to get a hole in one, and it is the only way to get a Pine Valley flag. You can’t even buy one in the pro shop. What a cool moment we were all able to share together. We even saw a celebrity there, country singer Luke Bryan. We had a chat before leaving the men’s room, and he seemed equally thrilled to be at Pine Valley as I was. Few experiences live up to the hype, after all — but Pine Valley is definitely one of them. I’ll always remember our time there. –Dr. David Yates

Stay Sharp as You Age

BY GOING BACK TO SCHOOL While you may be happy for the years of wisdom you’ve gained since being in your 20s and 30s, you might be missing the mental sharpness you once had. Why not have the best of both worlds? Scientists have found that the human brain changes with age — neurons fire more slowly, for example, and short-term memory recall can be more challenging — but that we often underestimate our capacity to continue learning as we grow older. Negative stereotypes about aging can reinforce these beliefs. However, new research is showing that older adults who’ve committed to immersive study of a new subject show brain function akin to someone 30 years younger. This goes beyond the tired advice to do a crossword puzzle or work a sudoku puzzle every day. The participants in this research study were learning entirely new-to- them subjects, like how to speak a foreign language, use a new piece of technology, or make art.

adults in their 50s, 60s, and beyond. But many

universities are starting to cater to an older crowd with lifelong learning programs. One example is the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the

University of Washington (UW). UW’s program offers a full course schedule on

subjects in the arts, sciences, and current events taught by qualified faculty and provided at an affordable rate. There are over 100 such programs at universities across the U.S. Have a longtime dream to write children’s books? UC San Diego Extension has a certificate program for that! If you’re looking to dive into a single subject or perhaps you’d like to continue working in retirement or shift gears later in your career, certificate programs are a great option. No previous education is required. Most certificate programs are open to all, typically run for less than a year, and easily accommodate part-time learners.

CONVINCED OF THE BENEFITS BUT NOT SURE WHERE TO TURN TO LEARN? TRY THESE TWO SOURCES.

Celebrate your years of hard-earned wisdom but commit to keeping your brain young by going back to school this fall.

Most colleges are designed with the traditional, 20-something college student in mind, which may not appeal or be a great fit for

The One Habit Dentists Really Hate WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER USE YOUR TEETH AS TOOLS

What’s the first thing you do when you’re unable to open plastic packaging with your hands? If you’re like many people, you skip the scissors and go straight for your teeth. Our teeth are wonderful tools — for chewing food. However, it’s not uncommon for people to use their teeth as multipurpose tools when they’re not designed as such things. Here are two habits that any dentist will tell you to break when it comes to using your teeth inappropriately. USING TEETH TO OPEN PACKAGING Whether it’s a bottle, a plastic container, or a bag of chips, this action of “opening” or “tearing”with your teeth can do serious damage. When your teeth come into contact with metal or hard plastic and you apply force, you risk cracking or chipping your teeth. On top of that, the metal or plastic may accidentally cut your gums or cheeks, which can then lead to infections. With repeated use as tools, your teeth can become weakened and eventually crack or chip, causing you pain. USING TEETH TO HOLD OTHER OBJECTS Holding objects in your teeth can be just as detrimental to their health as opening packaging. In fact, holding heavy objects can seriously weaken your teeth. Even lighter objects, like pens, can be just as troublesome — if this becomes a habit — eventually wearing down the

surface of your teeth. Although many people do these things without even thinking about it, these habits can lead to sensitivity and pain.

Our teeth were made to tear and chew food and nothing else. Using teeth as multipurpose tools can be tempting — especially if you don’t have the right tool nearby — but this can be costly. Damaged teeth may require fillings, crowns, veneers, or dental implants, depending on the severity of damage. It’s better to take care of your teeth now and use them as they were meant to be used rather than having to pay to fix damages later.

“Teeth are jewels, not tools!”

–Dr. David Yates
