Dear Members, Welcome warm breezes, blooming gardens, and cool cocktails – it’s Spring 2019 and the Club is bustling with events, dining specials, and clubhouse improvements. Hard Hat days are underway on the first floor in the new lounge and business center. Construction is proceeding, and we are on track for opening in late August 2019. As a reminder, our new lounge will provide a gracious setting with luxurious furnishings and will feature a stone fireplace and vintage bar.The business center next door makes room for your professional life with work stations, Hot Desks, and boosted cell phone booths for private calls.Thank you for your patience and support as we continue our work through the slow summer months. As a reminder, the Club is open and functioning during construction. A temporary lounge is available on the 6th floor in Suites 607 and 608, from 7:00AM - 7:00PM with coffee and tea service from 11:00AM - 5:00PM. Our new Library is also scheduled to open this summer in its new home on the 7th floor. Our Program and Food and Beverage Committees have packed so many great events into this spring and summer, I am finding it hard to fit them all into my calendar! I have been eagerly awaiting this year’s GrillWars 2 which heats up on June 20th and promises to be even more over the top than last year. Already confirmed are the Masters of the Grill, Executive Chefs fromYale, Harvard, and Penn along with our very own Chef Michael, winner of the Best Burger from last year’s event. If there was ever an event not to be missed, this is it! Look inside for other great events this season including: Growing like aWeed; a fascinating panel discussion on June 18 on the health and wealth of the Cannabis industry moderated by writer Mark Bernstein, ’83.Then we have Averting the Plasticpocalypse – the fight against plastic with John Hocevar, Director USA Oceans, Greenpeace on June 19. On June 24, a discussion with David Ebershoff, NewYorkTimes Best Selling author of The Danish Girl , turned into a movie starring Eddie Redmayne and AliciaVikandera. On June 25th, the Death March Escape , a story told by Jack Hersch whose father escaped the brutal Nazi death march at the end ofWorldWar II. Don’t miss our annual sailing trip aboard the schooner, Adirondack which sails at dusk from Pier 62 on June 22. And introducing a new summer Friday Night Dinner & Movie series, showing some classic favorites and interesting feature films packaged with dining discounts in the Bar & Grill. As if that wasn’t enough, our popular summer happy hour series,Wednesdays on theTerrace runs July 10 through August 28. You might have seen a new face around the Club. Please join me in welcoming Joseph Pastor, Director of Operations, (see sidebar). Joseph is doing a great job managing our construction project insuring we are meeting the Club’s needs for a timely calendar and successful opening. I look forward to sharing the grand opening with Joseph, Jason Pallen and the entire team in the fall. Welcome to Joseph Pastor, Director of Operations Joseph Pastor joins the PCNY team as Director of Operations working with the Club’s governance, trades and staff on special construction and compliance projects. Joseph previously served as Senior Project Manager for CHARLESMATZ, where he represented the Club on several large projects overseeing design and installation works including competitive bidding, code and compliance and the successful management of trades. Beyond permanent architectural works, Joseph’s expertise has grown through years of managing installations of exhibitions in multiple U.S. and international locations. Supervising specialized trade crews and construction personnel, he was responsible for overseeing fabrication and construction contracts, daily operations, and the monitoring of safety practices. His expertise includes multiple largescale exhibitions ranging from Musée du Louvre and the Château de Versailles in France to Grand Central Terminal and the NewYork Public Library in NewYork City. He has worked with companies like Chanel, Fendi, and Saks Fifth Avenue as well as media companies including Bravo and People. Joseph holds a Bachelor in Fine Arts - 3D Design, School of Visual Arts, and a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from the New School, Parsons. Welcome Joseph!

Together with climate change, plastic pollution has quickly become one of the most talked about environmental issues today.With the equivalent of a garbage truck full of plastic entering our oceans every minute, we have put so much plastic into the environment that it is now in our drinking water, our seafood, and even the air we breathe. As our understanding of the scope of this crisis expands from impacts on sea turtles and whales to concern about human health, corporations and governments are starting to take action. Greenpeace USA Oceans Campaign Director, John Hocevar, will share stories and insights from his experience working with activists, corporate executives, and politicians to keep plastic pollution out of our oceans, our neighborhoods, and our bodies. Since joining Greenpeace in 2004, Hocevar has spearheaded numerous projects, including efforts to improve the sustainability of seafood sold in supermarkets and to establish a network of ocean sanctuaries. A licensed submarine pilot and experienced SCUBA diver, Hocevar has explored the Chukchi Sea, Amazon Reef, Bering Sea and the Antarctic Peninsula in a research submarine. Hocevar earned a bachelor’s degree in evolutionary ecology from the University of Connecticut in 1990 and a master’s degree in marine biology, focused on coral reef conservation, from Nova University in 1993. Infrastructure Redefined: Retail 6th in a Series on the Future of Our Nation’s Infrastructure MONDAY, JUNE 10, 6:30PM RECEPTION, 7:00PM PROGRAM We are what we consume, and there are few things as closely studied as consumer behavior. Our buying habits are largely informed by what we value, and those values have historically found expression in the built spaces where we buy. From Main Street to mega-malls, much of our social lives and interactions has been tied to retail spaces, and as our world changes, so do those spaces. In the 6th installment of our ongoing panel series,“Infrastructure Redefined”, we will explore the disruptions occurring in the real estate of retail spaces. From the growing impact of e-commerce, to the sometimes-primordial nature of our shopping experience, to the re- imagining of what a retail experience can be, we will examine the changes occurring in retail structures, and how these changes might impact how goods and services are bought and sold. To celebrate Pride month, we are pleased to welcome bestselling author David Ebershoff, best known for his award-winning novel, The Danish Girl . In 2017 The NewYork Times named The Danish Girl one of the most influential LGBTQ books of the past two decades. Inspired by the true story of transgender pioneer, Lili Elbe, the novel was adapted into an Oscar-winning film and has been translated into more than thirty languages. A former Vice President and Executive Editor at Random House, Ebershoff has been a Visiting Lecturer in the Princeton creative writing program and has taught in Columbia’s graduate writing program for more than a decade. Brian Eugenio Herrera is Associate Professor of Theater in the Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University. He is, by turns, a writer, teacher and scholar whose work, both academic and artistic, examines the history of gender, sexuality and race within and through U.S. popular performance. He is author of The Latina/o Theatre Commons 2013 National Convening: A Narrative Report (HowlRound, 2015) and Latin Numbers: Playing Latino in Twentieth-Century U.S. He is also the Inaugural Resident Scholar for The Sol Project, an initiative dedicated to producing the work of Latinx playwrights in NewYork City and beyond. Basquiat’s Defacement:The Untold Story Inside a New Guggenheim Exhibition TUESDAY, JULY 9, 6:30PM RECEPTION, 7:00PM PROGRAM Before going to see the compelling Guggenheim exhibition (June 21-Nov 6) of work by Jean-Michel Basquiat, join us for an evening of extraordinary insight into the show by its guest curator, Chaédria LaBouvier,Williams ’07. Basquiat is one of the great American artists, a position recognized by the art marketplace, with a Sotheby’s auction yielding a record high for any American artist, with a single paintings selling price of $110.5 million in 2017.This Basquiat exhibition explores a formative chapter in the artist’s career through the lens of his identity & the role of cultural commentary in NewYork City during the early 1980s.The exhibition takes as its starting point the painting Defacement (The Death of Michael Stewart, 1983), which Basquiat created to commemorate the fate of the young, Black artist Michael Stewart at the hands of NewYork City’s transit police after allegedly tagging a wall in an East Village subway station. Paintings and prints made by other artists in response to Stewart’s death include works by Keith Haring, AndyWarhol, George Condo, David Hammons and DavidWojnarowicz. $10 for Members; $20 for Guests. Individuals are encouraged to explore the atrium and gallery at their own pace.The Ford Foundation for Social Justice headquarters building includes a 9,000 square foot, 160 foot tall Atrium garden designed by Dan Kiley.The Foundation’s mission-driven renovation modernized the building and also included a renovation of the garden to restore the spirit of the original Kiley design.There will be a club table for lunch at 12:00pm and the group will leave the lobby to walk to the Ford Foundation at 1:15pm. JUNE 14 On theWaterfront , directed by Elia Kazan ’30 stars Marlon Brando, Karl Malden, Lee J Cobb, Rod Steiger, Eva Marie Saint (her film debut).The film focuses on union violence and corruption amongst longshoremen, while detailing extortion and racketeering on the waterfronts of Hoboken, New Jersey. JUNE 21 The Manchurian Candidate , directed by John Frankenheimer ’51, is a political thriller about the son of a prominent U.S. political family who is brainwashed into being a sleeper agent for a Communist conspiracy to subvert the American government.This 1962 production was nominated for two Academy Awards and is considered a classic of the political thriller genre. It stars Lawrence Harvey, Frank Sinatra, and Angela Lansbury. JUNE 28 The Graduate is a coming of age film that branded a generation of Americans and was based on the novel by Charles Webb ’61. The Graduate was written in Charles’ senior year, & opens with:“Benjamin Braddock graduated from a small Eastern college on a day in June…” The film was directed by Mike Nichols and stars Dustin Hoffman, Ann Bancroft, Katharine Ross, &William Daniels. JULY 12 Eight Men Out , written & directed by John Sayles ’72, is a dramatization of a Major League Baseball scandal, in which eight members of the ChicagoWhite Sox conspired with gamblers to intentionally lose the 1919World Series. This film stars John Cusack, Michael Lerner, Christoper Lloyd, Charlie Sheen, and David Strathairn ’70.

JULY 19 My New Gun , written & directed by Stacy Cochran ’81. My New Gun is a comedy about a woman whose husband gives her a gun, supposedly for “protection” in a dangerous world, which is clearly the last thing she needs. My New Gun is a delectably wry slice of suburban life, imagined by Ms. Cochran and played with perfect bewilderment by the enormously appealing Ms. Lane.”– Janet Maslin, The NewYork Times . Cochran’s feature film debut stars Diane Lane and James LeGros, and includes Tess Harper, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Stephen Collins. My New Gun premiered in Director’s Fortnight at Cannes and earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Feature. JULY 26 Elvis & Nixon , directed by Liza Johnson ’92,The untold true story of the meeting between Elvis Presley, the King of Rock ’n Roll, and President Richard Nixon.The revealing, yet humorous moment, was immortalized in what is now the most requested photograph in the National Archives. Stars Michael Shannon and Kevin Spacey. The films will be introduced by Professor Jerry Carlson ‘72, a film historian and Chair of the Department of Media & Communication Arts at The City College of The City University of NewYork. Our sailing trip is always a sold out event but this year we’re adding some spectaular settings at dusk aboard the private schooner, Adirondack. Enjoy the views, fresh air and an open bar of beer, wine, soda and bubbly for two hours. Please meet at Pier 62, Chelsea Piers at 6:15PM at the Classic Harbor Line ticket booth, which is on the walkway next to the water. Pier 62 is located at West 23rd Street and the Hudson River, at the northern end of the Chelsea Piers building. Once you check in at the ticket booth, you will be escorted to the boat by the Captain when it is time to board.We sail rain or shine unless the captain cancels the trip due to unsafe weather conditions. In the event of a cancellation, you would receive a full refund. $95 for Members; $110 for Guests.
