PRESIDENT Dear Member, I hope everyone had a great start to 2019 with family and friends. If you weren’t able to attend the Members’ Holiday Bash this year, plan to attend next year! It was a wonderful evening with over 250 members and guests celebrating with great food, cocktails and dancing. I am pleased to announce that Brad Smith ’81, President and Chief Legal Officer of Microsoft, will be the Keynote Speaker for this year’s Princeton Night on February 6. Be sure to wear your Reunions jackets or best orange and black, as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of this winter gathering. Another new year celebration is the announcement that our Club has been selected as a Platinum Club of America for 2019 - 2020. Platinum Club status is the most revered acknowledgement in the Private Club industry and I would like to thank you for your support and encouragement, as we work to make our Club the home away from home you want it to be. The Programs Committee has created an exciting lineup of events to keep you energized this winter season, starting with our Informative Cabaret series on February 13, as singer Katie Welsh (’15) explores the role and representation of NewYork City in Broadway musicals. Go back in time on February 22 and join our “Soul of the 60’s” social event for a “totally groovy” experience. Save February 28, when the Club hosts Nadine Strossen, the first woman national President of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and JeremyWaldron, University Professor at NYU School of Law.These two pre-eminent legal scholars will have a lively debate on “hate speech” in a free society.Then on March 29, the NY Scottish Ball and PCNY co-host “ATaste of Scotland,” featuring a special ScotchWhisky tasting, nibbles, music and dancing from the Highlands. For the holidays, the Club will host a Valentine’s Day dinner on February 14 and a St. Patrick’s Day Beer Dinner on March 15. Mark your calendars because our “Refer a Friend” membership promotion opens on February 1 and runs through March 31, when it disappears again until next year! We want more members like you – so who better to select a new member than you? Washington’s Farewell:The Founding Father’sWarning to Future Generations WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6, 6:30PM WINE RECEPTION, 7:00PM PRESENTATION GeorgeWashington’s Farewell Address was a prophetic letter from a “parting friend” to his fellow citizens about the forces he feared could destroy our democracy: hyper-partisanship, excessive debt and foreign wars. Once celebrated as civic scripture, more widely reprinted than the Declaration of Independence, the Farewell Address is now almost forgotten. Its message remains starkly relevant. In Washington’s Farewell , John Avlon offers a stunning portrait of our first president and his battle to save America from self-destruction. John Avlon is the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Director of The Daily Beast . Green Sports and its Impact on Climate Change MONDAY, MARCH 11, 6:30PM WINE RECEPTION, 7:00PM PANEL DISCUSSION Nelson Mandela said “Sport has the power to change the world.” The sports world has been greening itself aggressively for the past 15 years. LEED certified stadia, arenas and Zero-Waste games have become the norm. Eco-athletes are starting to speak out. But fans, for the most part, are unaware of this.Why is that the case? And going forward, will the sports world engage masses of sports fans about climate change and other environmental issues? Lew Blaustein, author of GreenSportsBlog , the source for news and commentary about the intersection of Green & Sports, will moderate a panel that will try to answer these questions. Dr. Allen Hershkowitz co-founded and served as President of the Green Sports Alliance, and is Co-Founder of the Broadway Green Alliance and of the Environmental Paper Network. From 1988–2016, he served as Senior Scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). He currently serves as Chairman of the Board and Founding Director of Sport and Sustainability International and is the Environmental Science Advisor to the New York Yankees. Rita Ricobelli Corradi is the former Director of Sustainability for the United Bid Committee of Canada, Mexico and United States LLC, which won the right the host the 2026 FIFAWorld Cup. In 2007, she joined Columbia University’s Earth Institute, spearheading
a science-based approach in the use of sports for sustainable development. Jenny Vrentas is a senior writer for Sports Illustrated (SI) and The MMQB , SI’s pro football website. She spent six years at The Star-Ledger (Newark), where she was the beat reporter for the NewYork Giants (2012) and the NewYork Jets (2010-11).The 2018 season is her 12th covering the NFL. Genealogical Research in 2019: Methods, Resources and DNATesting THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 6:30PM WINE RECEPTION, 7:00PM TALK Genealogy has boomed in popularity over the past few years, aided by additional access to records and advancements made in consumer DNA testing. D. Joshua Taylor, President of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society and host of the PBS series,“Genealogy Roadshow,” will share essential methodologies and techniques for conducting a thorough and successful genealogical search.Taylor will also discuss important online and offline resources for finding and accessing key genealogical records, emphasizing content that can provide details relating to the lives of our ancestors, beyond basic genealogical facts and information. The discussion will include a review of the controversies and pros and cons of DNA testing alongside guidelines to consider when engaging in DNA testing for genealogical research. Infrastructure Redefined Part 5: The Future of Schools MONDAY, MARCH 25, 6:30PM WINE RECEPTION, 7:00PM PANEL DISCUSSION In keeping with the theme of our ongoing panel series, this discussion will explore a kind of infrastructure which is less brick- and-mortar in the traditional sense, but just as meaningful: the infrastructure of our educational institutions and processes.We will hear from a panel of executives with a range of perspectives on public school administration and financing, charter schools and coding bootcamps, creating a new set of standards and possibilities for the future of learning. Nadine Strossen in Conversation with JeremyWaldron THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 6:30PM WINE RECEPTION, 7:00PM DISCUSSION
Nadine Strossen, former national President of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), dispels misunderstandings plaguing our perennial debates about hate speech. In her book, HATE:Why We Should Resist it with Free Speech, Not Censorship , Strossen highlights the dangers that follow efforts to serve justice by limiting civil rights. Strossen argues there has been little analysis of whether censorship effectively counters the feared injuries of hate speech and that laws to regulate hate speech are at best ineffective and at worst counterproductive, enabling enforcing officials with broad discretion which predictably targets minority views and speakers. JeremyWaldron, University Professor at NYU School of Law, offers a contrasting argument to Strossen, through the lens of free speech on college campuses.Waldron contends that universities are places of free inquiry, where free speech should be privileged, viewing the college campus as a community that faces issues of vulnerability. In his book, The Harm in Hate Speech ,Waldron makes the case that hate speech should be regulated as part of a commitment to human dignity and inclusion and respect for members of vulnerable minorities. Nadine Strossen is Professor of Constitutional Law at NewYork Law School and the first woman national President of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), where she served from 1991 through 2008. She has written, taught and advocated extensively in the areas of constitutional law and civil liberties. In May 2018, Strossen’s book HATE:Why We Should Resist it with Free Speech, Not Censorship , was released to wide acclaim. Strossen graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard College and magna cum laude from Harvard Law School, where she was an editor of the Harvard Law Review . Strossen is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. JeremyWaldron is University Professor at NYU School of Law where he teaches legal and political philosophy. A prolific scholar,Waldron has written numerous books on jurisprudence and political theory.Waldron was born and educated in New Zealand, where he studied for degrees in philosophy and law at the University of Otago and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of New Zealand in 1978.Waldron received his doctorate in legal philosophy at Oxford University and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1998. Hello Everyone, Am I the only one who feels like the holiday season flew right by? Just like that, it’s all over… We had a busy November and December jam-packed with member events, friendly get-togethers and family fun.We had a great turnout at our Thanksgiving buffet and our Zinfandel Wine Dinner featuring Prisoner wines back in November.We went full throttle into December with our complimentary Holiday Cheer in The Grill, and a nice crowd for my annual holiday brunch, combined with a children’s story time event that featured a visit from Old St. Nick himself. The Members’ Holiday Bash was a smashing success. It’s always a treat for me to mingle with the familiar faces I see year round and meet new friends as well.We celebrated with our amazing

KEYNOTE SPEAKER: BRAD SMITH (’81) , PRESIDENT AND CHIEF LEGAL OFFICER, MICROSOFT The Princeton Club of NewYork is honored to welcome Keynote Speaker, Brad Smith (’81) President and Chief Legal Offcer of Microsoft. The NewYork Times calls Smith,“a de facto ambassador for the technology industry at large.” Smith also works to advance several significant diversity and pro bono initiatives, serving as Chair of the Board of Directors of Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) and Chair of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD). Smith graduated summa cum laude from Princeton University, where he later served on its Board of Trustees from 2014 until 2018. He earned his J.D. from the Columbia University School of Law and studied international law and economics at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. Prior to joining Microsoft, Smith was an associate and then partner at theWashington, D.C.-based firm of Covington and Burling, where he is still remembered as the first attorney to insist (in 1986) on having a personal computer on his desk as a condition for accepting a job offer.This special evening will also feature the presentation of the George “Bud” Schmucki ’41 Award, in recognition of excellent service in University and Alumni Relations.
