PROFITABLE CONNECTIONS

April 2022

Podcasting may seem like a fresh new industry making waves in the business world — and in many ways it is. But historically speaking, it is also a modern take on something humans have been doing for hundreds of years: communicating. This April, we’re celebrating the long history of communication — and how each development has greatly impacted how businesses operate. Over 150 years ago, the pony express service transformed the country. When it began in April of 1860, it was the very first service that could take a letter from the East Coast to the West Coast in just 10 days. It quickly grew in national economic importance, monumentally tying the new U.S. state of California with the rest of the country. Coincidentally, April is also the month Samuel Morse was born — 100 years earlier in 1791. He not only invented Morse Code, but also contributed to the invention of the telegraph, which killed the pony express in less than 18 months. It made east- west communication even faster, empowering our economy to synchronize and build off each other’s resources, despite the great distances in our country. Fast forward again to April 25, 1874, the day the future inventor of the radio — Guglielmo Marconi — was born. He first got the groundbreaking idea after sending a wireless Morse Code message to someone over 3,000 feet away. When his invention took off with the American public in the early 1900s, communication was changed forever. While radio might be the predecessor of podcasts, nowadays they’re miles apart. The radio served as a source for breaking news, a platform for entertainment, and for savvy businesses, a place to advertise their services. Today, podcasts still carry these great benefits, but they’ve also improved on the format in revolutionary ways. Podcasts can be any length. They can revolve around any topic. Anyone can be in them, and anyone can listen to them; you don’t need to be within a certain distance from a transmitter Podcasting’s Place in History From the Pony Express to Podcasts

or tuned in at exactly 7:30 a.m. to listen. Instead, you can utilize the podcast medium directly for networking, strategic partnerships, professional development, and so much more. To stay successful, business leaders have always had to adapt to the evolving forms of communication and media. Many of our clients have mastered this skill — and continue to do so with podcasting. For example, Brian Roisentul, host of “The Fit Growth Machine Podcast,” runs a digital agency and helps many emerging brands create awareness through social media. He’s constantly on the cutting edge of communication strategies, and podcasts are one of the essential tools he keeps in his arsenal.
