CAN PODCASTING IMPROVE PUBLIC SPEAKING? Yes — Thanks to Repetition

Aug. 7 is National Professional Speakers Day, and it reminded us that speakers have one of the most terrifying jobs ever. According to a 2014 survey by Chapman University, the most common fears in America are bugs, heights, and public speaking. For business owners, like most leadership roles, there’s a lot of pressure to have public speaking skills. But how do you get to practice if you’re not talking in front of crowds every day? The answer for us, and many of our clients, is clear: Start a podcast. Podcasting is an excellent way to “build” your public speaking muscles. Some might think it’s because you get more comfortable speaking in a public space. That’s true, but it ignores the most important way that podcasting makes a difference: repetition. As you may know, John came from the world of politics and worked as a speech writer in the White House. It was

common to see new candidates stumble when the spotlight glare hit their faces, and it mainly happened because they didn’t have enough practice with their messaging. However, candidates who have been in public offices or media for a while — or have hosted radio programs (yesterday’s version of a podcast) — had a lot of experience delivering consistent, clear messaging. They often did well when the spotlight arrived, rather than buckle under pressure. Most people try to avoid saying the same things over and over again, but when developing your public speaking skills, repetition is everything. Once, in front of a large crowd, an event host said, “Jeremy, you’re the expert on podcasting. Come up here and talk!” If Jeremy weren’t a podcast host himself, he would’ve dreaded that request. Thankfully, he talked about podcasting all the time with his guests. Even while on the spot, he could talk to the crowd with ease. It almost sounded rehearsed — minus the work and preparation. Best of all, podcasts allow you to practice your message in a low-stakes environment. Other people may be listening, but you’re not actually in front of thousands of people right away. It’s always possible to cut out parts where you stumbled, and nobody will ever know. Beyond repetition, you can even interview many experts and professional

speakers on your own podcast and gain new insights into public speaking that will help you in the future. Plus, we know many professional speakers who use their own podcasts in a similar way! It helps them network and connect in a way that could lead to more speaking opportunities. If you aren’t a speaker yet, you might be surprised to discover that, one day, a company or convention may want to hire you to be a speaker. Experts with an active podcast (about their specialties) are a very attractive choice as a public speaker, compared to experts who don’t showcase this level of knowledge. Many podcasters gain recognition as they develop a proven track record for their speaking ability. We’ve had clients get opportunities to speak on other podcasts, mainstream media, radio, television, and more — from Bloomberg to Forbes. Once, John had a speaking invitation to an event that was also featuring Malcolm Gladwell and Shaquille O’Neal. It was a surreal moment that couldn’t have happened without the repetition and recognition of his podcast. Here’s How to Keep Them Engaged! ARE YOUR EMPLOYEES BURNT OUT?

In 2021, a study by Indeed found that 52% of employees reported experiencing burnout. This is a considerable spike from the 43% who said they had the same feeling before the COVID-19 pandemic. With hours at work becoming more prolonged due to staff shortages, many workers feel tired, overwhelmed, and stressed. Luckily, you can implement a few strategies to reduce the amount of burnout your employees feel. Improve company culture. Do your employees feel like they can trust their managers and colleagues to help them when they are struggling? Are they afraid to ask for help or voice their concerns and frustrations?

Reward top performances. It can be challenging for employees to come to work every day if there is no long-term future for them at your company. This is where promotional opportunities come into play. If you have employees who go above and beyond each time and exceed expectations, offer them a promotion. This will make them feel valued and appreciated. You can even give quarterly bonuses that are based on performance. This will inspire workers and motivate them to do high-quality work every day. Even a simple shoutout or acknowledgment of their hard work can help. Praises boost confidence and make them feel like they are an essential part of the team. Monitor workloads and scheduling. One of the fastest ways for your employees to feel burnout is if they are overworked. While tasks may vary and spike on certain days, it’s crucial that you monitor your employees’ workload to make sure they aren’t working overtime frequently. Allow them to have free time by providing adequate vacation and sick time. Your employees must have time to enjoy their lives, exercise, positively interact with friends and family, and have a chance to practice self- care. If they are well-rested and have time to do things for themselves, they will be more productive and happy at work. You could even offer flexible schedules that accommodate their personal lives. By showing that you care about them, this will boost employee morale. Fighting burnout can be tough. But with forethought and consideration, you can help reduce this feeling and increase your employees’ satisfaction at work for years to come. With happier and more motivated employees, the productivity of your business will exponentially increase.

These factors play a huge role within work culture and help predict worker satisfaction. If your employees dread going to work because of the treatment and culture of the company, they may not be motivated to do their best and focus on their work. Your staff needs to feel valued, supported, and heard by their colleagues and

managers. Take time to truly understand

and listen to your workers’ concerns and let them know

their voices are heard. If employees feel like their uppers acknowledge them and improve the company culture, their overall satisfaction

at work will increase.
