PICK ONE: WEBSITE OR PODCAST? Why Podcasts Are Incredibly Safe for Businesses

relationships allowed him to walk into a job immediately afterward. Many of his peers, however, were jobless for six months or more. Similarly, in 2003, John had just moved to Sacramento and bought a condo. Then, the governor he was working for was booted out of office. Thankfully, he’d always put a premium on his relationships and nurtured them every chance he got. This saved him from being jobless and carried him into law school a year later. It’s dangerous to ignore your relationships, yet easy to do. One of the great benefits of a podcast is that it gives you and your peers a platform to immediately connect. For example, Martin Zerrudo, host of the “What Do You Do Next?” podcast, has used his podcast to connect with people who thrive in the areas where he needs help and vice versa. He says, “Working with strategic partners who provide a zone of genius outside of our own is crucial in establishing a safety net for our company. We're able to recognize and leverage what we do best, while working with others to leverage their expertise to help us mutually grow and succeed.” Even with great employees, solid systems, and financial measures in place, Michelle Prince, host of “The Power of Authority Spotlight,” says that “relationships with clients and referral partners” are an essential part of her strategy for keeping her business safe. Make strengthening your network a top priority. Without nurturing your relationships, who knows what knowledge and opportunities you may be missing out on. Even for our most cautious clients, many can attest: Podcasts allow you to widen your safety net further than you ever knew possible.

June is National Safety Month, and as entrepreneurs, we think of danger all of the time. We dream of avoiding the worst dangers and taking the right risks — the type of risks that pay off in dividends. But there are also safe, little-known business decisions that pay off in major ways.

Starting a podcast is one of them.

If someone told us to pick between keeping our podcast or our website, we’d choose our podcast every time. “Who gives up their company website?!” some may protest. Having a website seems like the safest route for any business in 2022. But the truth is that most company websites aren’t proactively reaching out to people. In fact, many websites are extremely passive, like a digital brochure. While they’re great for creating professional, digital “storefronts” to educate and impress browsing customers, websites aren’t as adept at creating new connections. Podcasting, however, puts you and your colleagues in a perfect position to share intimate industry knowledge, personal stories, and wisdom you’ve gained over the years. Creating your own show also allows you to develop strong professional relationships, which is why it’s one of the safest business decisions you’ll ever make. As you may know, John was once a speechwriter in the White House. marriage and family therapists in the Golden State. Say you put your marketing to work and build a referral relationship with just 40 of those therapists. Some of them start sending you 100% of their clients who want a divorce. Others send you 50% of those clients. How much more money do you think you would make in a year? Let those dollar signs dance in your head for a second! This is how the big boys, like Infusionsoft, do business. More than 50% of their new customers come from referral partners who have built recommending them right into their client process. Now here’s the big question: How do you convince another company that it’s in their best interest to partner up with you and start shoveling leads your way? The answer is easier than you think. You do it for them first. There’s a reason why “Give, and it will be given to you” (Luke 6:38) is a famous Bible verse. It applies to everything, including business! To build a referral partner relationship, start by sending a referral (or something else of equal value) to the business you’re chasing. They’ll be grateful, and pretty soon, a simple quid pro quo will turn into a lifelong partnership. This referral marketing strategy isn’t quick or effortless, but it is powerful. Start leveraging it now, and one day, wannabe referral partners will beat a path to your door to fill your pockets.

Let’s get right to the point: There’s no better lead than a referral lead. When someone refers business to you, that customer will likely convert faster, spend more, and stay with your company longer. In business, that’s basically the holy trinity! Of course, you probably think you’ve tried every referral marketing strategy under the sun. Asked your customers for referrals directly? Check. Handed out referral cards? Check. Created a referral incentive program? Check, check, and double-check! These are tried-and-true strategies, but the truth no one talks about is that 99% of the time, big companies don’t need to use them. That’s because they have a better tool in their back pocket that many solo entrepreneurs and small businesses overlook: the referral partner. A referral partner is another business that serves the same customer you do. If you’re a lawyer, that person might be a couples counselor, an urgent care doctor, or a real estate agent. If you’re a dentist, they might be a pediatrician or even a neighborhood association head! The key is that these people have already found your future clients and provided them a service. They’ve gained their trust, and if you play your cards right, they’ll pass that trust on to you. It is almost impossible to overstate the power of the referral partner model. Imagine you’re a divorce lawyer in California. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 32,620

FALSELY ACCUSED AND CONDEMNED THE SALEM TOMATO TRIALS

Surely, you've heard about the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts, but did you hear how the people of Salem, New Jersey, put tomatoes on trial in the 1800s? At that time, researchers discovered the stems and leaves of tomatoes contained toxins, and a small amount exists in a much lower concentration in the fruit. In 1820, wary of the poisonous red fruit, tomatoes were put on trial in the town courthouse, made to answer for their toxicity. However, Colonel Robert Gibbon Johnson, a farmer and historian, refused to believe the tomato was harmful and ate them on a regular basis. He even hosted tomato competitions, granting a prize to the person who could grow the largest tomatoes. People thought he was simply mad. To prove his point and redeem his reputation, Johnson frantically ate a basket of tomatoes at the Salem tomato trials. Then, he stood before everyone, as healthy and hoping to coax the crowd into dropping the “charges” against the fruit. When he remained healthy months later, tomatoes were no longer regarded as evil and poisonous.
