MEET TAILOR, OUR CERTIFIED DENTAL ASSISTANT! JULY 2022 A Lesson I Wish I Knew Sooner

Hi everyone! I’m Tailor, a certified dental assistant at Robinson Dental. I’ve always known I wanted to be in a job where I’d help people, but I never imagined dentistry would be my calling. It all started for me when I heard a dentistry ad on the radio. I was already considering nursing, but I thought I could take a quick class to feel out the field and see if it was for me. It didn’t take long for me to know dentistry was the field I wanted to pursue.

tightness of the muscles and helps give the jaw easier, more pain-free movement. Since dentists are doctors of the mouth and surrounding area, it makes sense they would be able to administer Botox — but I had no idea! Phenomenal advancement in dentistry has taken place in the past few decades. I’m deeply grateful for Robinson Dental’s dedication to education, especially since they have strongly supported my personal growth. I started off as a dental assistant in August 2021, which is about 11 months ago by the time you read this. Now, thanks to Robinson Dental, I’m a certified dental assistant, and I’ll be starting my RDA (registered dental assistant) certification in the fall. Although I’d worked as a dental assistant for four years beforehand, Robinson Dental is by far the best workplace I’ve ever experienced. The educational opportunities have been amazing, but the staff is even more incredible to work with. My previous offices were great for different reasons, but they often lacked teamwork. When I joined this practice, everyone was so sweet, hospitable, helpful, and hardworking; I thought: “Is this real life?” You can’t have a good work ethic without a good team on your side, but here, they make it easy for me to perform at my best.

Growing up, oral health wasn’t really a priority. It wasn’t until I started training that I learned how important it is for children to have good oral care, even as young as 6 months. That shocked me! On average, most patients’ first dentist appointment will happen when they’re 5 years old, but it’s beneficial for a dentist to evaluate their oral health much sooner. Tooth decay — even in baby teeth — may affect your oral cavity, and that could impact your future teeth and overall health. I wish I knew that a lot sooner as a child. Even as a working professional, I still learn new, surprising things about my field. We just introduced Botox treatment for TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder), because Botox helps break up the The oral cavity affects so many functions: breathing, drinking, eating, talking … Neglecting oral care leads to serious consequences in day-to-day life.

despite the long scary road ahead, and I love being part of that.

I truly adore my patients. Creating a connection with them through every step of their treatment is an amazing, rewarding experience for me. It makes me so glad to do what I do! Outside of work, you’ll probably catch my fiancé, 5-year-old son, and me outdoors. We LOVE outdoor activities! Even in the winter, we’ll be playing in the yard and throwing snowballs. Plus, we count grilling and cookouts as an outdoor activity … the most delicious of them all. If you catch me around, don’t hesitate to say hi!

And, honestly, I didn’t just get a workplace by joining Robinson Dental. I found a second family.

Most importantly, they treat our patients like family, too. It’s terrifying for patients when they need dental treatments, especially full mouth reconstructions. The oral cavity affects so many functions: breathing, drinking, eating, talking … Neglecting oral care leads to serious consequences in day-to-day life. It’s inspiring to see how our team comforts patients

When you were growing up, you probably dreaded going to school as much as any other kid until your parents taught you the value of education. And now, your child may be going through that same phase. Perhaps they’re struggling to understand specific concepts, or they’re falling behind their peers and are embarrassed. Whatever the case may be for your child, you can use summer to teach them how to love learning and value education as much as you do. First, you can start by explaining the reasons why education is vital in a relatable way. Use examples from your own educational journey to show how your school experiences developed your critical thinking skills, enhanced your creativity, and put you on a career path that was best for you. If your child enjoys more hands-on activities to learn, engage them in projects or field trips that allow them to touch and interact with materials alongside others. They’ll develop a love for learning in a mode that connects with their ideal learning style. Another way to instill the value of education in your child is to cultivate their passions while teaching them. Take them to the library and check out books about what they love. If they’re interested in a certain animal, take them to the zoo or to an aquarium to see it in real life. You can even take them to museums to explore science and history. Keep in mind that your child is going to mimic your behaviors, so be open- minded when it comes to education and learning. Read your own books alongside your child to motivate them to continue reading independently. Talk about the zoo animals and museum exhibits with your child to further encourage fun conversations about each topic to keep them interested. Finding activities that encourage your child to grow as a young learner will benefit them, no matter what time of year it is, but fun summertime educational experiences will keep your child entertained and prepared for the next school year!

Can Oral Health Affect Sleep?

Yes — Here’s How You might’ve noticed we talk about the mouth- body connection all the time, in other words, the relationship between your oral health and overall body health. Proactive dental care might keep your teeth clean, presentable, and cavity-free … but great oral health can do so much more, including improve your sleep quality! How do we define poor sleep versus great sleep? It starts with the ability to fall asleep, stay asleep throughout the night without waking up too often, and fall back asleep quickly if you do wake up. Many factors can influence your sleep duration and sleep quality, including oral health. Here’s how. Oral Dryness This symptom is typically caused by mouth breathing or diseases such as diabetes mellitus or Sjögren’s syndrome. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for people with oral dryness to wake

up multiple times per night from the unpleasant feelings of a dry mouth. Although drinking water can relieve some complaints, in severe cases, it doesn’t always help, and maintaining a regular sleep pattern becomes challenging. Proper oral hygiene, products, and medications can help ease or even eliminate this uncomfortable symptom to help patients sleep better.

Sleep Apnea Many people forget that dentists are doctors of the mouth, so it may be surprising when a dentist becomes involved in a sleep apnea patient’s care. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is one of the most common sleep breathing disorders, where your throat or neck muscles may relax too much during sleep and obstruct your breathing. This can cause frequent disturbances in your sleep, even if you never remember waking up. Many dentists work collaboratively with primary care physicians and sleep specialists to provide long-term care for OSA patients through dental examinations and creating and maintaining properly fitted oral appliances. If you have any questions about how oral health is affecting your sleep, don’t hesitate to give us a call and make an appointment today!

Teeth Grinding Do you grind your teeth? Besides directly

impacting your teeth (i.e., wearing them down) and quality of life, teeth grinding can disturb sleep. As your jaws tense up, the tension can expand to other parts of your body like your head or back. This can cause continuous headaches or stiff shoulders! Dentists can help you relax your jaws, create a custom mouthguard, or pick other innovative devices to help control your teeth grinding habit, an issue that affects over 30% of adults worldwide.

Thank You for Your Help! We Raised $4,935 — But We Still Need You!

Our first responders mean the world to us. No matter what day or hour, they are there when we need them most — often, even at the risk of their own lives. In May, we decided to hold a fundraiser to support our local first responders (firefighters, EMS, and police). With your help, we raised $3,160 for Wayland, and $1,775 for Coopersville first responders! Thank you so much for all your help and enabling these important community members to receive the tools, resources, and support they need.

We’re hosting a birthday bash and grand opening for our brand-new Cascade office! You’re officially invited to our grand opening party, where we will be giving away our Robby D Jeep! B93 and iHeart Radio will be providing the music. The celebration begins July 14, 2022, from 5–7 p.m. at 5749 28th St. SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49546. Thanks so much for your support, which has made this exciting new chapter for our team possible! Win a Jeep!

This July, we are EXTENDING our June fundraiser, supporting patients who need cleft lip and palate operations! Everyone will have until the end of July to contribute. If you want to help give children lifelong healthy smiles, this is a great opportunity to give the right care to those in need.
