Definition of blind date - noun: A social engagement between two people who have not previously met, usually arranged by a mutual acquaintance. Definition of blind date with a book - noun: A social engagement between a person and a book not previously read, usually arranged by a librarian. “February is Library Lover’s Month. Because there is nothing that library staff love more than books, we want to introduce you to some that we think you will love too. We’ll entice you with a line or two about the book’s genre; otherwise, you won’t know what you’re getting until you check it out. Do you always read cozy mysteries? Or is non-fiction your soulmate? Maybe it’s time to swipe right on a thriller or some science fiction. And remember…these aren’t just any books. These are stories that the staff love and recommend. To go on that blind date, simply search for “Blind Date with a Book” in the library catalog. This will pull up a list of the different genres. For instance, if you want to have a date with a Sci-Fi, look for “Blind Date with a Book: Out of This World.” Each genre will have a line or two about them—If you like your androids tall, dark and snarky, give me a glance—that will not be helpful at all, but will make you laugh! Take a chance. Try something new and exciting. Let your library spread some love around.”

Sincerely, Patty Hector

Patron Spotlight Lauren Reynolds has had anything but a normal life. Born on March 11, 2004, she was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, meaning the entire left side of her heart was basically useless. After two surgeries, dozens of hospital stays, and various other procedures, she was given her first heart tranpslant at age eight. For the first time in her life, she was able to run, play sports, and hang out with friends like normal kids. In 2014, she was diagnosed with Coronary Artery Disease and was listed for another heart transplant. On her birthday in 2015, she received her second heart transplant. Since then, she has had her fair share of trials including fighting Histoplasmosis and Ebstein Barr simultaneously that summer and coding in 2017. Thankfully, at 16-years-old, she has remained pretty healthy since then. She loves visiting the Saline County Library (when it’s open!), practicing her photography skills, and advocating for both organ donation and cardiovascular health.

What are some of your hobbies? I love being creative, making crafts, building things in Minecraft. I love photography and hanging out with my friends at the library (when I’m able to obviously), and of course, I’m always open to Meet Lauren Reynolds Because of the condition I was born with, I wasn’t ever able to attend public school or make many friends. I was a member of Girl Scouts when I was younger, but the library was the first place where I truly belonged. I have met some amazing people and hopefully life-long friends there. I love the programs that they offer, the staff is always helpful and polite and there’s always someone there willing to hang out or talk! How do you spread awareness for organ donation and heart disease? I’m an ambassador for the Arkansas Children’s Hospital, along with being on the youth advisory council. Organ donation and heart disease awareness is something I’ve always been passionate about. Now that I’m older, social media is a great way to share my message and spread the important message of being an organ donor and having your heart checked regularly. I also fundraise for the ACH CVICU as much as possible. chat about organ donation. Why do you love the library?
