T H E BULLETIN

SEPTEMBER 2017

a newsletter for members of the wilmington country club

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As our summer season winds down and we enter the fall, we should stop to again appreciate our staff atWilmington Country Club. While our bricks and mortar are wonderful, it is our staff who make for our outstanding member experience. With this in mind,we will all receive, later in September, a request to support the Club’s Centennial Scholarship Fund. This fund was started as part of our Club’s Centennial Celebration in 2001 with the first awards being made in 2002. Under the direction of the Centennial Scholarship Committee, chaired by Jamie Murray, this fund has grown to over $528,000. Each year, applications are received from Club employees and their family members requesting support for their educational costs. At the Committee’s meeting in June 2017, the applications from 26 employees/dependents were reviewed and all were considered worthy of an award. In total, $48,000 was awarded to those 26 individuals. Eighteen of the applicants achieved GPAs greater than 3.0. Of the 26, 10 applicants received awards in previous years. The Centennial Scholarship Fund in an excellent way for us to show our appreciation to our outstanding staff. If you have given in the past, please continue your support. If you have not yet given, please consider a donation later this month. As always, thanks for reading. Joseph F. Hacker III President

A NOTE FROM PHIL September Greetings! Comments, Feedback, Suggestions, Constructive Criticism... call it what you like, receiving it is commonplace in the life of any Club’s General Manager. It comes in all different shapes and sizes and can be delivered in a variety of different formats. Sometimes it evolves around individual use, preferences and perception while other times it is focused on the “greater good” of the membership as a whole. It probably won’t surprise you to learn that our membership is not shy about making their thoughts and feelings known. Even though sometimes the points raised are difficult to address or resolve, your willingness to share them with me speaks to the level of trust you have in our commitment and desire to maintain the highest possible quality levels. I sincerely thank you for that. Be assured that all input is valued and I recognize its importance - particularly to the individual who has offered it.

In recent years, we have extended the pool season a weekend past Labor Day with general success. We will do it again this year. The pool will be closed Tuesday through Friday immediately following the Labor Day weekend, but will reopen Saturday and Sunday, September 9th and 10th with hours 11:00 am until 6:00 pm.The Café will also be open the same hours. Hope for good weather! Inside the Clubhouse, September marks the beginning of what I like to call the “Dining Season”.Although the patio will remain open until the weather turns, I urge you to consider dressing up a bit and visiting the Dining Room. In my humble (and perhaps biased) opinion, there is not a nicer room or experience in the area.Thursday remains a “jacket, no tie” night. Piano music makes the experience complete on Friday and Saturday evenings. You don’t have to wait for a Birthday to enjoy a wonderful evening out with special friends or family. What’s new? This month, one answer to that question is “Fitness on Demand”. We have converted the former Group Ex/Yoga room located in the Squash Building to a “Fitness on Demand” studio.“Fitness on Demand” provides hundreds of instructor-led video class offerings that cross all facets of fitness. From Spinning toYoga and everything in between, members can now enjoy a structured workout that fits their schedule. Members who already participate in one of our Group Exercise Packages may enjoy this new offering at no additional charge, but any member may gain access to the area for a minimal monthly charge ($10).Watch for information regarding introductory workshops to learn more. I know the seasons are beginning to change because we just had a meeting to review this year’s Christmas decorations. It reminded me to remind you that there is no better place to hold your Holiday Celebration than your Club. Barbara and Kara mentioned to me that several good dates remain available. Whether your event is for 20 people or 200, personal or business, give us a call and let us show you how easy and painless Holiday entertaining can be. Speaking of the Holidays, our Clubhouse team has been quite busy with the final plans for the upcoming season. A complete informational/promotional brochure from our Communications team that outlines the entire schedule from Thanksgiving to New Year’s will be distributed before the end of the month. There are several new events planned, as well as a return of your favorites. When you get yours, please take a moment or two to review the details so you can plan appropriately. Once again, summer has passed with incredible speed. It seems like yesterday we were enjoying the opening of the Pool and Café with a wonderful three-day Memorial Day weekend. Swim Meets, Sports Camps, Golf and Racquets Championships, July 4th Celebration and the addition of Bocce, Croquet and Pickleball are just some of the great memories of the season. I hope you have had a chance to take advantage of the facilities enjoying your favorite pastime. If not, don’t despair - there is still a full complement of social, golfing, racquets and fitness activities planned, so plenty of opportunities remain! I’ll see you at the Club! Phil Iannelli General Manager

BOOK CLUB Our Tuesday, September 5th selection, Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult, confronts the problems of race, prejudice and justice. Ruth Jefferson is an African American labor and delivery nurse in a Connecticut Hospital. During a routine checkup of a newborn, she is told by the father to get away from his wife and baby, and then the father talks to her boss. Ruth is assigned to another patient and a note in the newborn’s folder says, “No African American personnel to care for this patient.” The next day, Ruth is the only nurse in the nursery when the baby stops breathing. What should she do? She hesitates but then does perform CPR, but it is now too late, and she is charged with a serious crime. Can she win with a white public defender? Will having 20 years nursing experience, being a widow, and having a husband who was killed while serving in Afghanistan help her or does her race negate everything? Join us on the 5th at 4:00 pm. in the Ladies’ Lounge as Patsy Walls leads the discussion of this intense book dealing with a challenging, controversial topic. Our October selection is Christina Baker Kline’s novel, Orphan Train , which tells the story of the orphan trains which ran between 1854 and 1929 and which took thousands of abandoned children from the East Coast to the Midwest where their fate would be determined by luck and chance. Kline features a rebellious foster teenager and a 91 year old widow who rode the orphan train when her parents died. Their tales of resilience in the face of aching loneliness and upheaval are inspiring.

WINES OF THE MONTH

TAVERN/GRILLE WEEKLY SPECIALS

August 29th through September 4th Grilled Chicken & Eggplant Parmesan over Spaghetti, Garlic Bread September 5th through September 10th Roast Pork Loin, Braised Red Cabbage, Mashed Sweet Potatoes, Apple Cider Sauce September 12th through September 17th Ground Sirloin with Green Vegetable, Mashed Potatoes, Mushroom Gravy

September’s wines of the month keeps us in the state of California. This month we are heading to the Lodi region of California, nestled between San Francisco and the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. Long referred to as the center of California’s wine production, Lodi enjoys a rather conducive climate for grape growing. Cool wet winters and summers of hot days and cool nights lend the region to high quality wines and rather prolific production levels. Although the wines of Lodi have certainly taken a back seat to those of Napa and Sonoma, recent vintages have brought the region’s wines to the forefront, especially the wines produced from the Zinfandel varietal and other eclectic varietals.

September 19th through September 24th Roast Turkey Breast with Stuffing, Mashed Potatoes & Gravy, Green Vegetable, Cranberry Relish

James Mitchell Cabernet Sauvignon, Lodi, California 2013 Glass $8.00 / Bottle $32.00

September 26th through October 1st Calves Liver with Bacon & Onions, Green Vegetable, Potato du Jour ---

The Cabernet Sauvignon is a very approachable but nonetheless a substantive wine, featuring lush fruit flavors with a touch of oak. In the words of the James Mitchell winemaking team,“wine as real as Lodi – rugged, bold and honest”.

Reservation Cancellation Policy If you have made a reservation for the Dining Room or a Club function and are unable to attend, please take a moment to call and cancel. This simple gesture may make it possible for another member who wants to attend to do so. Dining Room Attire Jackets, but not ties, are required for gentlemen on Thursday evenings.Ties are required on Friday and Saturday evenings. Specials cost $12.95 and include choice of soup or salad. Reservations in the Tavern/Grille for parties of 5 or more are appreciated.

James Mitchell Sauvignon Blanc, Lodi, California 2015 Glass $8.00 / Bottle $32.00

The Sauvignon Blanc offers beautiful aromas of tropical and citrus characteristics that culminate in a crisp and bright finish. The wine is more akin to the French style with herbal nuances but still exhibits the citrus attributes of the new world style.

Exciting research is getting the attention it deserves, indicating that the stronger you are, the longer you will live. Two separate studies were conducted that both reached the same conclusion, muscle strength is positively associated with longevity. The researchers also found that strength was independently associated with longevity, even controlling for factors such as cardiorespiratory (aerobic) fitness. One study looked at grip strength in over 6700 men, aged 20-80 years. They followed-up on average after 19 years and found the positive effect. The first >Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6 Page 7 Page 8 Page 9 Page 10 Page 11 Page 12 Page 13 Page 14 Page 15 Page 16 Page 17 Page 18 Page 19 Page 20 Page 21 Page 22 Page 23 Page 24
