David & Crystal Long, Jeffrey & Sarah Reed, Jess & Gail Visser Welcome to our Newest Members!

Seven Oaks Book Club

The Seven Oaks Book Club meets each month to discuss books on a reading list which is selected by mutual consent of the Book Club members. All members of SOCC are invited to attend.

This month’s selection is … The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kidd An extraordinary story set in the first century about a woman who finds her voice and her destiny, from the celebrated number one New York Times bestselling author of The Secret Life of Bees and The Invention of Wings. Grounded in meticulous research and written with a reverential approach to Jesus's life that focuses on his humanity, The Book of Longings is an inspiring, unforgettable account of one woman's bold struggle to realize the passion and potential inside her, while living in a time, place and culture devised to silence her. It is a triumph of storytelling both timely and timeless, from a masterful writer at the height of her powers. Our next meeting is September 24 th at 5:00 pm ~ via ZOOM~ Please email Bee Barmann @ [email protected] to receive information on joining the meeting.

Cookbooks

by Corey Dye, Interim Executive Chef

This month I wanted to talk about something I have a lot of passion for; cookbooks. I personally own well over 100 cookbooks and have read 80% of themcover to cover. I would like to share a few of my favorites that have really help me grow as a cook and chef.

Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child You can’t say enough good things about this one! It is an absolu- te classic and a cookbook I think everyone should own. Julia was one of the greatest people ever in the world of cooking and food. She made delicious food easy to prepare and in the way she laid out the recipes, is nothing short of amazing.

Ratio by Michael Ruhlman This book gives you the standard ratio of many ingredients in most recipes. It’s not a cookbook but it’s a great tool in learning to be a better cook. Mallmann On Fire by Francis Mallman Mallmann’s book is more of an upscale book, as the recipes are not the easiest to execute. However, I have it on my list because of his style of cooking; open fire or on a grill. At first, learning to cook over an open flame was a little scary for me,

The Flavor Bible: The Essential Guide to Culinary Creativity… by Andrew Dornenburg and Karen A. Page

If you have ever wanted to get creative in the kitchen but were not sure how to use an ingredient, this is the book for you. This book it a great reference for procuring, seasoning, pairing and preparing 1000’s of ingredients

but this style really taught me to relax and use the flame and the char it puts on the food, to create better flavor..

Here’s one more recommendation: Don’t follow the recipes to the letter. Use cookbooks to give you an idea of how to cook a dish, but then take that idea and make it yours. Cooking is an art form and you should really have fun with it and experiment with your own personal flavor.

Fitness Class Descriptions

Abs & Glutes This 30-minute class focuses on sculpting and toning the gluteal and abdominal muscles. This focus on the lower body is important to strengthen these often- weak areas, partially due to the time we spend sitting at the computer. Using body weight exercises, we’ll target these areas through repetitive and endurance strength movements. Mat Pilates Pilates exercises performed on the mat are designed topromote core stability, flexibility, endurance, postural and body awareness, and to correct muscle imbalances. Pilatesbuildsmind/bodyawarenessthrough breath work, concentration on movement control and precision. Dance and Sculpt This fun, calorie burning class combines choreogra- phed dance for all levels along with a full body workout using weights, bands, and body weight exercises. Core training and stretching is included to complete this workout. Do you prefer to work out on your own? Take advantage of our OUTDOOR GYM

All classes are held outdoors. Social distancing rules are enforced. Mats are provided, but we encourage members to bring their own. Metabolic Conditioning This class is designed to burn fat, build muscle, and tone and strengthen the body by using timed work and rest periods. The combination of strength and cardio exercises will maximize calorie burn during and after the workout; improve lean muscle mass; improve metabolism; and improve overall physical health in a short amount of time. All fitness levels are welcome as modifications and challenges are available. Strength Training A 45-minute circuit based full body strength class devoted to increasing your total body strength, improving the firmness and tone of your muscles, and creating a healthier, leaner body. The class is chal- lenging yet suitable for all fitness levels. Modifications made for those who need them. Core N More This class is designed to train and strengthen the musc- les in your pelvis, lower back, hips, and abdomen to work in harmony to improve balance and stability. Strong core muscles are important for daily activities like bending down to tie your shoes, swinging a golf club, good posture, and improving back pain. Core exercises can strengthen and tone the underlying ab- dominal muscles and will help achieve more defined abdominal muscles. Aqua Fitness This class uses water resistance to develop muscle tone, core strength, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, and general well-being. The water exercises are easy on the joints while providing a stimulating workout. Pool props such as pool noodles, water resistance dumb bells, and kickboards are used. Stroke Technique and Conditioning This class is for beginning, intermediate, and advan- ced level adult swimmers wanting to improve their technique and fitness. Classes are not swimming lessons. This class offers stroke refinement and physical conditioning to build strength and stamina.
