In the next few weeks, the Centennial Scholarship Committee will be sending out their bi- annual request for contributions to the scholarship fund. This fund was started as part of the Club’s Centennial Celebration in 2001 and since its inception, has generously provided over $500,000 in educational scholarships to deserving Club employees, dependents and caddies. Our appreciation for the dedication and friendliness of our wonderful Club employees deserves to be recognized by the membership and shared with our employees. Contributions to the fund is a small but important way to express our gratitude in a manner that can significantly impact their lives for years to come. A NOTE FROM PHIL

September Greetings! As the calendar moves towards autumn, I have a couple of topics to visit. The first is not particularly pleasant, but extremely important. Given the nature of your Club’s activity, it will occasionally happen that a member, guest or employee will be faced with a medical emergency. To prepare for this eventuality, more than thirty employees have undergone training to provide assistance when called upon. They comprise our “first response team”.We have had nine AED on site with individuals certified in their use for more than 20 years, and have had the need to use them. Unfortunately, having AED units available isn’t enough. I’m reminded of a conversation with a fellow Club Manager who shared a tragic tale of a member who suffered a heart attack on the golf course at his Club. A playing partner called 911 from his cell phone to summon assistance, but no one thought to call the Clubhouse where an AED unit and immediate aid was available. If you should encounter an emergency situation while at our Club, aid can be obtained by picking up any Club phone, dialing “0” and informing us of the problem. You will be asked a few basic questions about the nature of the incident and, most importantly, your location (it never happens at the front door!).This will trigger our response

protocols, including a call to 911, notification of our “first response team”, the movement of onsite emergency assistance to the location, and proper meeting and direction of arriving emergency professionals. However, we can only respond if we know about it. Emergency phones are located on the golf courses, adjacent to each water fountain. We also recommend that you have the Club phone number programmed into your mobile device. Now, let’s move to a topic that is a bit lighter. In recent years, we have extended the pool season a weekend past Labor Day. This year will be no different. The pool will close Tuesday through Friday immediately following the Labor Day weekend but, if the weather is conducive, will reopen Saturday and Sunday, September 7th and 8th with hours 10:00 am until 6:00 pm.The Poolside Café will also be open the same hours. Let’s hope for good weather! Inside the Clubhouse, September marks the beginning of what we call the “Dining Season”. Although the patio will remain available as long as weather permits, I urge you to consider dressing up a bit and visiting the Dining Room. In my humble (and perhaps biased) opinion, there is not a nicer room or experience in the area.Thursday remains “jacket, no tie” night. Piano music makes the experience complete on Friday and Saturday evenings. You don’t have to be celebrating a birthday to enjoy this wonderful venue. This month’s Bulletin also outlines additional social, golf and racquets events for you to enjoy. Special attention is deserved for a couple of new offerings, including: Burgers & Brews on the 19th; a Crab Crack on the 26th; and a unique Pro-Tennis / Jai-Alai Exhibition & Fall Tennis Invitational on the 27th. Speaking of tennis, the impact of the project to expand the number of indoor courts and replace the existing tennis lobby will really start to be felt this month. Anticipate that by the end of September, the lobby will be closed with demolition underway. Available parking in the upper lot will be restricted, the outdoor hard courts will have become a staging area for materials and a construction access to the indoor courts will have been established. When necessary, #10-N will be played as a par 3 from a forward set of tees. Protective fencing will have been installed and the sounds of construction will overpower the mowers and leaf blowers. As we have done with other construction projects, we will do our best to keep you informed with timely progress reports. I’m sure you have heard this before, but it seems a revisit to the Club’s cellphone policy is in order. Please don’t use them for voice communication. Don’t let them make noise. If checking messages or texting, use them with discretion in areas that aren’t highly visible. Always be considerate of the Club environment you are in and your impact on your fellow member. Also, a very unscientific survey (me watching cars drive in) suggests that a large number of the drivers are preoccupied using their phones as they are approaching (usually a bit too fast) the congested area of the Clubhouse. How can this be a good idea? Do you know what else went too fast? Summer. Once again, the season has passed with incredible speed. It seems like yesterday we were celebrating the opening of the Pool and Poolside Café with a wonderful three-day Memorial Day weekend. I hope you have had an opportunity to take advantage of the facilities enjoying your favorite activity. If not, don’t despair - there is still a full complement of social, golfing, racquets and fitness activities planned, so plenty of opportunities remain! I’ll see you at the Club. Our Club and its accompanying landscapes are the perfect backdrop to showcase the Club. COMMUNICATIONS

COMMUNICATIONS Click the video below for a message from Meghan Spero, Membership Development & Communications Manager.

Q&A WITH COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR BECCA MATHIAS

How long have you worked atWilmington Country Club? My mom, Susan Mathias, has been the Administrative Assistant here at WCC for 30 years and she suggested I work at the Poolside Café after I graduated high school in 2011. I spent six summers at the Poolside Café and a few winter seasons as the coat check attendant. I started my official position as Communications Coordinator September 2016… 3 years ago! What are some of your responsibilities as Communications Coordinator? I work closely with my Communications Manager, Meghan Spero; I’m lucky to work alongside someone I get along with very well both personally and creatively. When we both started, we had a huge task of updating almost everything digital and print. Some of my responsibilities include the Club’s social media, updating the website, creating and scheduling emails, event menu and flyer design, the newsletter, and my personal favorite, all of the photography of the Club. Members love all of your photos. When and how did you get your start? Your sweet comments regarding my photography means the world to me, thank you. I’m lucky that I’m able to photograph such a special place. Growing up I always had a disposable camera and I joke that some of my first portrait sessions were of my American Girl doll. I attendedWilmington University and graduated in 2015 with a Bachelors Degree in Media Design with a tracking in Photography. It was my last year of college that I started to find my “ photographic eye” and wanted to make a career out of photography. I started my photography business and have been a freelance photographer since! You do quite a bit of photography around the area and in the community. We are lucky to have your skills here atWCC.Tell us about some of the projects you have done. While a majority of my work is portraits and weddings, I am also a volunteer photographer for Longwood Gardens and a contributing photographer for local food magazine, Edible Delmarva. I’ve been a member at Longwood Gardens for years and constantly shared my photography on my personal Instagram account, @beccamathiasphoto. I was extremely humbled by Longwood Gardens reaching out to me and asking me to be a part of their volunteer photography team. My work is shared on their social media and can be found in their print publications as well! If i’m not working, I’m most likely spending time at Longwood Gardens. Thanks to photographing food frequently here at the Club with the culinary guide of Chef Tip, I have taken a serious interest in food photography. I have had my work published in Edible Delmarva - which you can find in local spots such as Brew Haha and Janssen’s. What are some of your favorite things to photograph here atWCC? My favorite event to photograph, hands down, is the Farm to Table Dinner. I love the outdoor setting and everything from the table setup to the food is gorgeous to photograph. My favorite spot on property to photograph is the large pond by North #18. Standing underneath the tree right outside of the Golf Shop with the chairs looking at the pond. I have a photo of this view in every season. If you ever visit my mom in the front office, she has a giant print of the photos! Any photo tips you can share? I absolutely love seeing your photos and how you capture the Club. Follow along on Instagram (@wilmingtoncc1901) and Facebook (facebook.com/wilmingtoncountryclub) and share your photos with us! Or you can email me photos directly at [email protected] - I’d be happy to share your photos on our social media. Lighting is key, especially with mobile photography. Next time you take a photo on your phone, tap your screen on the brightest part of the scene. This works well if you’re outdoors to expose the photo properly. If you’re taking photos of food - don’t use your flash. Natural light is always better than flash. One more tip with mobile photography, try not to zoom in unless you really have to! Physically move closer to subject and your photo will be much clearer. If you see me around the Club photographing events or the grounds and see a photo you would like, feel free to reach out and I'll be happy to email it to you!

BOOK CLUB Note that the WCC Book Club will meet on September 10th, the second Tuesday of the month, as many people will be out of town because of the Labor Day Holiday. Our choice for September 10th is Kristina McMorris’ novel, Sold on a Monday , which was inspired by a haunting, newspaper photo of four young siblings huddled on the steps of an apartment building in Chicago, their mother shielding her face from the camera and from the sign advertising 4 children for sale. When Kristina McMorris saw this picture, she was horrified and wondered what dire circumstances could have pushed a mother to sell her children? Upon learning the heartbreaking outcome for the children in that picture, McMorris decided to write a novel that would give two fictional children being sold by their mother the loving outcome they deserve. Hence, McMorris creates a struggling society writer Ellis Reed who spots two children on the porch of a farmhouse in Laurel Township, Pennsylvania with a sign that says “2 Children for Sale”. Ellis snaps their picture and then develops it in his newspaper’s darkroom where Lillian Palmer, a secretary to one of the editors, finds the photograph and shows it to her boss who orders Ellis to write a story to accompany the photo. Hence, McMorris’ profound and moving novel of ambition, love, and redemption. Join us at 4:00 pm in the Ladies’ Lounge as There Fiechter leads the discussion reflecting on how a moment’s fateful choice can lead to a lifetime of harrowing consequences. McMorris chose Henrik Ibsen’s quote to introduce her story: “A thousand words will not leave so deep an impression as one deed.” Our fast-paced October selection, Nefertiti by Michelle Moran, brings to life ancient Egypt as the beautiful, notorious Nefertiti tries to navigate the Egyptian court and win the love of the new Pharaoh. Passion, betrayal, political- unrest, plague and religious conflict are hallmarks of this remarkable period of ancient Egyptian history.

A NOTE FROM THE GOLF SHOP

There was plenty of golf action at the Club in August. Our annual championships continued through their brackets, junior golf camps finished summer programming, and the month concluded with our Men’s Labor Day Member/Member. There is a lot more in store for September. Several terrific events are all on tap for the weeks ahead including our September Men’s Member Guest, Women’s “Fall Harvest” Guest Day, Men’s Senior/Super Senior Stroke Play and more. Check out all of the events on the following pages.

RECAP SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH PLAY

We were delighted to have 25 players compete in the 2019 Senior Club Championship Match Play. This year’s bracket featured some exciting matches and great play across the board.

The championship match came down to Bob Hackett against Steve Walczak. Both players had defeated strong opponents in the semifinals and were playing solid golf as they entered the finals. Mr. Hackett and Mr. Walczak played a competitive match, trading blows all the way to the 17th hole. In the end, SteveWalczak was able to win the match, claiming his fifth Senior Club Championship in the last six years, and second title in a row! Congratulations to SteveWalczak on his exceptional play. Please follow this link to view full results from the championship. SUPER SENIOR HANDICAP CHAMPIONSHIP The championship match featured Rick Allen against Fred Sears. Both competitors played strong golf leading up to the finals, winning tough match ups along the way. After a closely contested front nine, Mr. Sears opened up a four hole lead, winning three in a row to start the back nine. For a moment it looked like he would cruise to an easy victory, but Mr. Allen had other ideas. He went on a run himself, winning three holes in a row and narrowing the deficit to just one with two to play. The match came down to the 18th hole, but in the end, Fred Sears hung on to his 1 up lead, claiming his first Super Senior Handicap Championship. Congratulations to Fred Sears on his terrific play! Thank you to everyone that participated in this year’s Super Senior Handicap Championship. Please follow the link below to view full results from the event. We look forward to another great event next season. Please follow this link to view full results from the championship. MEN’S PRESIDENT’S CUP The President’s Cup finals featured Scott Porter and David Holmes, who had defeated Tom Beck and Neal Levitsky respectively in their semi-final matches. Both players survived qualifying, and then advanced through the bracket of 32 to get to the championship match. The match was close most of the way, with Mr. Porter holding a one up lead on the 17th hole of the North Course. When his tee shot pulled left into the trees it looked like Mr. Holmes might be able to square the match and head to the last. But Mr. Porter played a skillful punch 8-iron from under the pines to four feet, closing the match and claiming the annual championship title. Thank you to everyone that participated in this year’s President’s Cup. Please follow the link below to view full results from the event. We look forward to another great event next season. We had a great showing this season from both of our PGA Junior League Golf teams. Wilmington Team 1 finished undefeated in first place, and Wilmington Team 2 finished second in their respective divisions. This year our juniors learned about teamwork and sportsmanship, while also getting a lot better at golf. We are proud of all our young rising stars in the game!  Six of our juniors advanced to post- season all-star play. Teem 1 went against the formidable Jersey Shore team in the first round of the playoffs. US SQUASH HALL OF FAME

Bunny Vosters is being inducted into the US Squash Hall of Fame! She was an incredible racquets enthusiast who played with

amazing grace and poise. With a hair never out of place, she could put a ball on a dime anywhere and at any time. Her ball placement and positioning was so good that she would just glide around the court and never looked hurried. A fantastic partner and incredibly gracious opponent. But she was as competitive and fierce as anyone out there. She loved her racquets sports, and she is missed to this day here at Wilmington Country Club US Squash writes: Bunny Vosters (1919- 1999) was one of the greatest squash doubles players in history. A top tennis player (she reached the quarters at Forest Hills in 1948 and went on to capture more than forty U.S. national titles), Vosters took up squash in her forties. She won eleven National Doubles titles, tied with Hall of Famers Diehl Mateer and Alicia McConnell for the most all-time (she also lost twice in the finals). She was also the oldest person to ever win a U.S. national open squash tournament—she won her first title at age forty-three in 1962 and her last title in 1977 at age fifty-eight. Playing with Jeanne Classen, Betty Meade and her daughter Gretchen Spruance, Vosters was an irresistible force on the right-wall. Vosters was a top singles player, ranked as high as third in the nation. She was a longtime board member of the women’s association, representing her hometown of Wilmington, Del. To celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the merger of the men’s and women’s national squash associations, this will be the first all- women class of inductees. The induction ceremony will be held at a gala luncheon courtside at the FS Investments U.S. Open before the finals on Saturday October 12, 2018. Those interested in attending should contact Ed Chilton.

Hi, m nam is Mary Green, I am a p rsonal rainer and group fitness instructor at Wilmington Country Club. I love being creative with my workouts and always love learning and trying new things. I am a very-hands on person, and during my spare time I love doing crafty things like drawing and painting. In addition, I like finding new and fun ways to work the body… like going to American Ninja Warrior gyms and doing their courses to challenge myself and mind. I make sure to keep up to date with the latest information, that's backed by research and science to ensure top-quality knowledge and hold myself accountable to a high standard of work ethic. As I b gan le rning about how fascinating the human body is, the more I wanted to learn about how to keep the body happy and I wanted to share my knowledge. I understand the struggle of trying to implement a healthy lifestyle, trust me! I know what it is like to not know where to begin, what to do next, or if I’m even doing it right. I like doing a mix of exercises using circuits, intervals, cycles, and rounds. I use reps as well as timed workouts. As I like to be creative and try new things, I like to find different ways to be active. I am passionate about utilizing functional movements as a foundation for long term success in activities of daily living. My goals as a personal trainer are to make exercise fun and enjoyable! Most importantly, I want you to know I'm in this with you.
