Because of our team’s focus on performance, we were able to contribute an amount equal to 9.659% of your pay in Profit Sharing to your 401(k) retirement accounts in the first quarter, which is a record! LTL Services A Team Effort FOUNDATION OF PEOPLE AND SERVICE For 50-plus years, we’ve delivered outstanding less-than-truckload services with a focus on professionalism and safety. The key to that success through the years is also the key to our future – our people and our commitment to teamwork. “That sounds very simple, but it’s our people,” says vice president of operations LARRY MASON . “It’s our culture and the people within our culture. All of our people care. They care about our customers, and they want to satisfy our customers in any way they can.” CREATIVE COLLABORATION One way we’re able to do that is the teamwork we show with our other service units – Truckload, Dedicated, Integrated, and

OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW Our commitment to providing career opportunities is evident within our LTL team. Whether it’s Truckload, Dedicated or Distribution & Fulfillment associates transferring to LTL, or growth within LTL from the dock to driver’s seat and leadership, we’re proud to help teammates achieve their career goals. “That’s who we are,” Larry says. “When you look at our frontline leaders, service center directors and regional vice presidents, we’ve got a lot who started as drivers or on the dock and grew through the years. We always look inside the company before we look outside.” STAYING ON THE CUTTING EDGE Technology continues to help us work smarter, not harder, and our LTL team is a prime example of that. We’re currently introducing tablets to improve efficiencies and make processes easier for our workforce. We’ve completed about 70% of the installation, and we anticipate having all our service centers on board before the end of this year. We also continue to invest in state-of-the-art safety technology, and Larry says that commitment will continue as we aim to have the safest fleet on the road. “We already have forward-facing cameras, automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, and all these things to make our equipment safer and more user-friendly for the drivers,” Larry says. “We’re also currently testing side- view cameras that can protect our drivers from false accusations from other motorists. Distribution & Fulfillment. According to Larry, that teamwork includes a recent collaboration between LTL and Truckload to provide drayage from ports across the Southeast. Our LTL team performs the dray off the ports to local service centers, and Truckload makes the final delivery to our customers. “We wouldn’t be able to be what we are without the other services we provide,” Larry says, “because of the

support we all give one another.” Larry says another way we work together is by being flexible in how we use our equipment. “When you talk about our different service units, we don’t think of ourselves as divisions,” Larry explains. “Because of who we are, we all lean on each other and utilize each other’s resources if need be. We’re more flexible than most of our competitors. And we feel like our equipment is a competitive advantage for us moving forward.”

Truckload Drivers Share Tips On How They Achieve Greater Fuel Economy GETTING THE BEST MILEAGE POSSIBLE All of us have noticed a sharp increase in fuel prices in the last couple of months, and that has affected what we pay to fill up our personal and Averitt vehicles. Two members of our driving force, Cartersville Truckload driver CHRIS YOHN and Eastern NC Truckload driver WILLIAM WATSON , recently shared some tips on how they’ve been able to maximize their fuel economy through the years. CRUISE CONTROL Cruise control is ideal for roads without frequent stops, turns or required driving maneuvers (e.g., interstate highways), and Chris says using cruise control correctly is the simplest way to improve your fuel economy. “A lot of drivers will set the cruise control for 65, then they’ll keep their foot on the pedal regardless. That’s not helping,” explains Chris, who averages more than 8.9 miles per gallon. “Because if your foot is on the pedal and you hit 64 miles per hour, your truck is going to give 100% throttle to get you back up to 65, whereas if you had your foot off the pedal, it would feather it back.” AVOID IDLING One of the biggest drains on fuel is when the engine is running but the wheels aren’t turning. In local P&D operations, it’s best to shut off the engine when making pickups and deliveries, even if the stop is just a few minutes. Sleeper tractors are equipped with APUs to maintain comfortable temperatures in the cab when shutting down for the day, so there’s no reason to keep the engine running. “Every time I stop, I turn the truck off,” says William, who also averages more than 8 miles per gallon. “Whether I’m picking up a load at a customer or doing a drop-and-hook, I shut the engine off. And I use the APU as much as possible.” FUEL ECONOMY = PROFIT SHARING William says good fuel economy and more Profit Sharing go hand in hand. “The more we save on fuel, the more Profit Sharing we get,” he says. “I’ve been here 25 years, so I want to get as much Profit Sharing as I can if I ever decide to

TEAMING UP TO SERVE THE CAROLINAS

Associates from our Charlotte service center recently completed a Team Up Community Challenge for Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina. The team totaled 18 service hours by bagging sweet potatoes! SHFB of Metrolina is a member of Feeding America and serves 14 counties in North Carolina and 10 counties in South Carolina.

Shuttle Driver Shares Averitt Experience

Today, Troyshawn boasts tens of thousands of online followers. His videos often give an inside look at what it is like to be an Averitt driver – showcasing everything from equipment to service centers and stops. “I love driving for Averitt,” Troyshawn says. “I feel like I am part of a family instead of just a number. My first year was a great experience, and I was glad to be able to share it.” His “Trucking With Troy” video series on YouTube became very popular with those in the commercial driver community. Many began asking about the hiring process and expressing interest in joining Averitt. “I reach a ton of potential teammates on social media,” Troyshawn says. “I get a lot of questions in the comments about the recruitment and application process, the quality of Averitt’s equipment and facilities, and what the mileage and hours are like.” When someone reaches out to Troyshawn with interest in driving for Averitt, he likes to get familiar with the recruit. “I think it’s important to ask them some questions and get to know them. He says being a shuttle driver does not provide as many opportunities for content, but he promises more videos are on the way as he settles into his new position. “I’m not on the road for as long these days, but that’s why I like it,” Troyshawn says. “I enjoy getting to sleep in my own bed every night, and I like having a set schedule. Like I tell everyone in my videos, Averitt has always gotten me home on time. Dale was a commercial driver for 38 years, including about 17 with Averitt. After serving as a Truckload driver out of Lexington KY for more than seven years, and as a driver for our Compass Manufacturing account in Louisville since 2013, Dale was recently named as a Driver Development Center instructor in Lexington. Dale is excited for the opportunity to share his experience with drivers who are either new to our team or have completed our Dock-To-Driver Training Program and are polishing their skills before getting on the road. “I feel honored that I can use my experience to help drivers,” Dale says. “I want to try to give them a better picture of what to expect, as a fellow driver who just recently came off the road. I’ve been in no telling how many different types of situations with shippers, receivers and traffic. I can relate that to drivers, tell them what I’ve experienced, and help them to prepare for what to do if they ever encounter those situations.” Our Driver Development Center training is currently offered in Cookeville TN and Lexington. That strengthens our culture.” Jeff, meanwhile, started his Averitt career in 1989 as a part-time dock associate. In 1992, he was promoted to frontline leader, and in 2005 he moved into sales. Jeff also has service center director experience, having filled that role in Chattanooga from 2011-2017. “I’ve always had good leadership and the ability to be able to grow and be trained to do other things,” Jeff says. “I’ve always had opportunities to learn, and that makes a difference.” As Bryan moves into a regional leadership role, he’s excited to see Jeff take the next step in his career as Knoxville service center director. “The associates at Knoxville already know Jeff,” Bryan explains. “It makes all the sense in the world to promote from within, and it strengthens our team and gives associates the opportunity to use their talents and skills at another level.” Congratulations to Bryan and Jeff on your career growth, and we look forward to seeing our Tennessee teams move forward with the stability and professionalism that have made us a transportation leader for more than 50 years! One of the hallmarks of our team is consistent growth and stability. One of the biggest reasons for that is the way we promote from within, and our new Region 1 vice president and Knoxville service center director are two more examples of that commitment. New Regional VP, Service Center Director Have Strong Ties Longtime Knoxville service center director BRYAN SNYDER has been promoted to regional vice president for our Tennessee teams, taking over for JIM ELLIOTT , who is retiring at the end of June. And 33-year associate JEFF PENLEY , who most recently served as a transportation specialist, is moving into Bryan’s former role. Bryan came to Averitt in 1985 as a transportation specialist in Chattanooga. After becoming our Chattanooga service center director in 1987, he moved to Knoxville for the same role in 1988. Bryan is proud to be part of a culture that builds for the future from within. “When we promote someone from within, we know what we’re getting,” Bryan says. “We know that associate understands our

Meridian Associate Uses Red Thinkin’ Rewards For Kayak

“My 10-year-old son is my youngest of four children, and he loves fishing,” Deiter says. “Also, my wife and I floated a creek several years ago and loved it. So my youngest son has been wanting a kayak so he and I can float it. Ambassador Team Member Stays Connected, Shares Averitt Cares For Kids Mission

The Ambassador Team is a great way for Averitt retirees to stay connected to Averitt, and THOMAS CATRETT THOMAS CATRETT is thankful he’s able to take advantage of that opportunity and continue to make a difference.

Thomas spent a little more than six years with our team following a 27-year career in the Air Force. He started in 2014 as a Truckload driver in Montgomery before moving to shuttle in 2017 and retiring in late 2020. During that time, our culture certainly made an impression on him, especially the difference we make through Averitt Cares for Kids and our special relationship with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The Ambassador Team currently has more than 160 members who are able to take advantage of many program features, such as: • Supporting the mission of Averitt Cares for Kids • Earning referral rewards for finding People Like You • Participating in local Team Up Community Challenge events • Becoming an Averitt Mentor by continuing to work on a reduced schedule Are you nearing retirement and want to continue to make a difference?
