The Cleanroom Commitment

Cleanrooms are controlled environments custom built to manufacture packaging for medical, pharmaceutical, electronic, aerospace, and military devices. They reduce contamination and mitigate pollutants such as airborne microbes, aerosol particulates, chemical vapors, and dust while controlling other parameters such as temperature, humidity, and pressure. At CFB, cleanroom filtration systems are equal to those found in operating rooms and scientific research facilities.

“Our clients can’t afford to have any particulate contaminants, whether skin or bacteria,” Jim says. “Packaging becomes more and more important when there is less and less room for error.”

CFB employees undergo extensive training in contamination control. Special gowning, including masks, gloves, booties, and hair coverings, reduce human containments like skin cells or hair. But cleanliness is only one part of the cleanroom process. CFB also takes extra precaution to prevent packaging additives from leaching into products. Extensive testing ensures no materials used in manufacturing will contaminate the products they are designed to protect. CFB meets ISO certification to verify the integrity and quality of its cleanroom processes and products. “When it comes to cleanrooms, it’s all about quality and specifications,” explains CFB CFO Brian Kunisch. “It’s about setting the bar at a certain level and attaining that consistent quality product and specs that customers can rely on. We can be trusted day in day out, lot by lot, order by order. That’s what we pride ourselves on.”

Materials

Proprietary Resins In cooperation with our resin suppliers, we have developed a proprietary blend of “Barefoot” materials that allows the finished product to open easily without the addition of any anti-block. This not only allows the product to open easily, but also creates a non-scratching material that will not mar or leave any residue on critical finished products. Due to the research conducted, and our variety of materials, CFB can develop a custom blend of materials to fit your specific applications or requirements. CFB1000 SERIES: Pure Barefoot Low-Density Polyethylene A strong general use clean packaging film specifically designed for use in clean applications. While it has a good cleanliness level, it can be slightly difficult to open. This is one of the more cost-effective cleanroom packaging films available, while still providing a good level of cleanliness, strength, and ease of sealing. Available in custom colors. CFB1004 SERIES: Black UVI CFB1004 products are formulated with protection from both ultra-violet degradation and penetration. The black opaque color also hides valuable products from prying eyes to help keep your light-sensitive products and equipment secure when used as a pallet cover. CFB1600 SERIES: Square Bottom Covers Square Bottom Covers are made with the same virgin-grade materials as our cleanroom films and are tested to ensure they meet the requirements of an ISO14644 Class 5 (FED STD 209E-Class 100) cleanroom environment. Covers can be made from any of our polyethylene grades including LDPE, CleanTuff®, ULO, anti-static poly (both clear and pink), UVI (black, white, or clear), in addition to several custom colors. CFB2500 ULO SERIES: Ultra Low Outgassing Poly Film This film was engineered specifically for critical products that require packaging in a film that combines low ionic contamination and ultra-low outgassing. ULO Poly packaging film has excellent handling characteristics and an extremely clean surface. With a higher gas barrier than standard low-density poly, ULO Poly is an excellent choice for vacuum packaging applications. Available in custom colors. * Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery: Our competitors have tried to copy and continue to mislead the marketplace and unsuspecting consumers claiming they possess or carry this specially formulated material. Don’t trust your sensitive products to the counterfeiters with similarly spelled names or with deceptive tags like “+”. CFB3000 SERIES: Medium-Density Polyethylene Specifically designed for use in applications where cleanliness levels exceeding IEST-CC-STD 1246D level 100 are necessary. It contains no additives such as slip, anti-block, or antioxidants and exhibits excellent characteristics in the areas of Ionic Contamination, Outgassing, Non-Volatile Residue, and Cleanliness. Available in custom colors. CFB4000 SERIES: High-Density Polyethylene Used for vacuum packaging applications that require superior cleanliness levels due to the intimate contact of contamination sensitive components. Having a cloudy appearance, this material exhibits superior strength, greater puncture resistance, low non-volatile residue, low outgassing, and ease of opening. Available in custom colors. CFB5000 SERIES: Nylon Clear Film A product that can be cleaned to the most stringent specifications, due to its hard surface. It is a strong, abrasion resistant film that is used in a variety of clean applications. Nylon is an unplasticized, FDA approved food-grade clear film. Additionally, it is very low in ionic contamination and non-volatile residue.

Industry: Telecommunications Spanning a broad range of end-to-end fiber optic cable solutions for communication networks, telecommunications companies form the backbone that connects businesses, homes, and people around the globe. According to the North American Telecommunications Damage Prevention Council, the average cost to bury fiber optic cable in a rural area is $75,000 per mile. Repairing damaged telecom fiber can be just as expensive.

Challenge: Maintain a contaminant-free environment when laying fiber optic cable. Provide an environment that discourages the build-up of static electricity.

Solution: CFB9600 SERIES: Anti-static Cleanroom Films CFB provided the client with Level 100 Cleanroom tubing, to ensure minimal particulate presence upon insertion of the fiber optic cables. The antistatic properties of the CFB9600 SERIES film helped to minimize the amount of electrostatic buildup on the cables. This preserves the life of the fiber optic cables, minimizing issues in the field.

Industry: Healthcare Healthcare teams across the United States performed 39,036 transplants with organs from both deceased and living donors in 2020. Thoracic organs like the heart and lungs, are only viable for transplant within a four- to six-hour window after being removed from a body. Challenge: Need contaminant-free packaging to protect organs during transport. Ideally, something stronger than standard low-density polyethylene. Also, critical to have a non-scratching material that will not mar or leave residue on critical organs. Solution: CT200 CLEANTUFF® HDPE Film Using CFB’s proprietary blend of “Barefoot” materials allows the finished product to open easily without the addition of any anti-block. This creates a non-scratching material that will not mar or damage highly sensitive organ tissue. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) has four times better tensile strength, and three times better compressive strength, when compared to LDPE. CFB added strength to the packaging to ensure safe transport.

Industry: Aerospace / Space Exploration Far outside our solar system and beyond the distant reaches of our galaxy—in the vast nothingness of space—the distance between gas and dust particles grows, limiting their ability to transfer heat. Temperatures in these vacuous regions can plummet to about -455 degrees Fahrenheit (2.7 kelvin). Challenge: Develop a material that can withstand the cryogenic-like rigors of outer space, while still maintaining its properties during normal conditions on earth. A product that would provide excellent barrier resistance while offering the highest levels of clarity. Solution: CFB7000 SERIES: Hydroblock® PCTFE HydroBlock® is a standout product among other high-performance films in areas such as moisture barrier, clarity, chemical resistance, durability, and extreme low-temperature performance. It is also one of the clearest industrial-grade polymeric moisture barrier films available in the market. This film is commonly used where the highest levels of clarity, moisture barrier, and durability in harsh situations are desired. It’s the only homopolymer that combines traits of clarity with moisture protection and chemical and weather resistance. HydroBlock® stands up to UV transmission without degrading the quality of the film. This is very important when sending a product into space. These bags have been used for a variety of applications on shuttles, including storage of food, liquids, samples, and waste.
