IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY

Harnessing Optimism This Spring

Optimism is defined as having hope and confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something. Relying upon optimism to unlock your full potential in the splendors of life as well as your financial future is the key. My daughter, Isabella, will be turning 9 years old this month. I am extremely proud of the amazing young lady she is growing up to be. Not only is she doing well in school, she also has a focus and passion for dance unlike any other. Taking five different types of dance classes, Bella is thriving in jazz, ballet, tap, hip hop, and acro. I’m proud to say that her dance portfolio is well diversified! She is such a joy, and we are looking forward to celebrating her birthday with a trampoline party with her friends. As many of you may know, last year I competed in two endurance hikes. At the end of last year, I did some reflecting, and, with some encouragement from a friend, am now registered to participate in the Game On! Ponte Vedra Beach Triathlon this year. I feel very positive about the running and biking portion of my first triathlon, but when it comes to swimming, I haven’t swum laps since I was 13 years old! To prepare, I’ve been getting in the pool about 2–3 times a week. Just as with Bella’s training, I know that day one will not be the same as day 14 and week five. It’s all about remaining optimistic and persevering, as well as welcoming the progress I make along the way. The triathlon will consist of ocean swimming for 0.9 miles, bicycling along scenic A1A for 25 miles, and running along the oceanside town for 6.2 miles. It will surely be quite a challenge, but with mental and physical preparation, I am excited for a successful experience! “Retirees look forward to the future, and that’s why I meet with people up to 10 years before retirement.”

Remaining optimistic for the future is the key to success. Retirees look forward to the future, and that’s why I meet with people up to 10 years before retirement. It’s much like preparing for a triathlon or competing in dance — it takes much preparation, a positive attitude and mindset, and determination. So, if by now you’ve fallen short of what you set out to do on January 1 or are looking to harness some new goals, spring is a time of renewal. It’s never too late to renew your desire to make positive changes; and as far as I’m concerned, you can do this regularly just as we do in the financial world — quarterly! Out with the resolutions that may not have worked and in with positivity and determination!

PREPARING YOUR A/C UNIT FOR SUMMER

For many people around the country, April is the first month when they might turn on their air conditioning unit. Even if it’s still chilly where you are, summer is right around the corner, so you need to make sure your A/C unit is ready to tackle the summer heat. A central air conditioner has an indoor air handler and an outdoor compressor. The compressor is where you want to spend your time cleaning and maintaining. More than likely, you didn’t use your air conditioner during the cooler winter months, so you’ll need to do a few things to ensure your unit is in peak condition before turning it on. Before doing any work on your unit, make sure you turn off the circuit breaker. You’ll need to turn off the power to the condenser at the service panel, but most condensers also have a weatherproof disconnect box that you need to power down. Once your unit is powered down, you can begin cleaning and replacing your furnace or air-handler filters. Ideally, you should do this twice a year. If you fail to change or clean these filters, restricted air flow will reduce the efficiency of your unit. In addition to cleaning your filter, you also need to clean the condenser coils. If your unit was uncovered during the winter, leaves and other debris likely found their way inside the coils. Make sure the fan is clear before moving inside the box to check if the coils are clogged. If they are, clean them with a soft brush and use a vacuum to clean the coils from the inside.

Once you’ve cleared away all the debris and excess water, check the coolant lines. These lines are usually covered with foam insulation that can fray and crack. If they’re damaged, replace them with new foam insulation sleeves. Your unit should now be ready for a test, and if everything runs well, your air conditioner should be ready to take on the summer heat. Anyone can clean and complete simple maintenance, but if the system still doesn’t work properly, call in a professional to investigate and handle further repairs.

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: RANDY HJELM

Life in Retirement Is Bliss

Randy grew up at the beach. His father was an avid fisherman in Neptune Beach, and, oftentimes, Randy would tag along. Now, at the young age of 72, Randy is retired and fortunate enough to live roughly five blocks away from the beach, allowing him to frequent it as much as he wants — it’s his sanctuary. “The beach, the water, and fishing are quite the blessings in my life,” Randy tells us. “If I could do anything all day, it’d be fishing.” Two years ago, Randy achieved a personal best — he caught a 35-inch snook in the surf, which is absolutely unheard of in northeast Florida! “That was quite the feather in my cap,” Randy exclaims. Randy and his wife Sandra also enjoy camping, and they have an older retro pull- behind camper they enjoy taking out when they are able to get away for a little vacation. While campsites have been difficult to

reserve in the midst of the pandemic, they visit parks and camp every chance they get. It’s a wonderful way to spend time together, to get back in touch with nature, and to experience the wilderness. Starting this month, construction is ramping up at the Hjelm home. They are very excited to be converting their garage into a living area downstairs with two bedrooms upstairs for their son, their daughter-in-law, and their 2-year-old grandson, Webb. “Webb is the star of our life,” Randy says proudly. “We are so thrilled to have them so close to us. It’s an absolute dream come true.” Now they will always be “home for the holidays!” Retirement for Randy has been an incredible adventure to date. “I’m so lucky to have so much to look forward to in the best years of my life,” Randy notes in a tone of happiness, optimism, and a profound sense of accomplishment.

• 1 lb fresh ricotta cheese • Fresh mint leaves, sliced • Sea salt, to taste • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 375 F. 2. On a large baking sheet, place baguette slices. Drizzle with 2 tbsp olive oil and sprinkle with 1 tbsp of salt. Bake for about 7 minutes, but do not brown. 3. In a medium skillet, heat 2 tbsp olive oil over medium-high heat. Sauté drained peas with garlic until cooked through. The peas should still be firm, not mushy. 5. 3 INSANE EVENTS THAT HAPPENED AT AUGUSTA NATIONAL GOLF CLUB

Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, is one of the most famous golf courses in the world. The golf club was constructed back in 1933 and has enthralled golfers of every skill level. Augusta is mostly known for the Masters Tournament, one of the four major championships on the PGA Tour.

the police handled the situation from there. Reagan returned the next day to play an uninterrupted round.

The Years Without the Masters

During World War II, golf was one of the last things people thought about. After seeing the bulk of their members sent overseas to fight in the war, the owners of the course came up with an alternative way to make money. They decided to allow cattle and turkeys to roam the course before they were ready for market. It took years for the foliage to return to playing shape. Death and Return At the 2018 Masters, a man named Johnny Pruitt got to live his dream by attending the championship as a spectator. He never made it to his seat though as an irregular heartbeat stopped his heart. Pruitt was taken from the course, and his heart was restarted with a defibrillator before he went into a coma. He awoke from the coma a week later, and Augusta invited him back to attend the 2019 Masters.

In its nearly 90-year history, Augusta National Golf Club has seen some crazy events. From hostage situations to near-death experiences, there’s no shortage of unbelievable stories that have taken place on the course. Below you’ll find three of the most bizarre events that have occurred at this golf club.

Ronald Reagan’s Bizarre 1983 Round Many presidents throughout our country’s history have enjoyed the game of golf, and Ronald Reagan was no exception. While Reagan was in the middle of a round at Augusta, a man named Charles Harris rammed his pickup truck through a locked gate, stormed into the pro shop, took five hostages, and demanded to speak with the president. Reagan left the course after Harris refused to speak to him over the phone, then
