President’s Message

Welcome to Springtime at ACC! The Board of Governors, club management and staff have been working hard preparing for and looking forward to an another great season! Easter Brunch will be very busy with a full dining room and the official kick-off of our season.

In February, the board had a retreat and focused on the long-term and short-term goals and plans for the future:

Key areas included:

The land sale: we are still progressing, albeit slowly. We are still moving ahead; more details will be announced in the near future.

Membership: Revising current offerings to Membership categories with fewer options, simplified application, and the return to an initiation fee in 2023. An initiation fee is essential as it stabilizes membership, increases the length of stay, provides an essential contribution to capital funds, and helps to maintain affordable dues levels. Capital Improvements include and are not limited to new pool furniture, Tennis court renovations, improved drainage, and modifications to the golf course in redesigned forward tees and renovation of the 13 th green. The continuation of the highly successful premier pricing program in the pro shop open to all members of ACC will be funded through advertising on the golf carts, Committees: Thank you! We have eight committees with over 60 members volunteering to help to make the club a great place to spend time at. Committee chairs lead their respective committees on improving all aspects of the club. Our first-class staff works with the committees to streamline and implement great ideas. Feedback from members often ends up on agendas for improved offerings. 2022 still has substantial impacts on our operations from Covid. We are practicing safe standards and will continue to in the future. We face challenges in all aspects of the cost of being in business, including high inflation, higher labor costs, food and supply costs, and high delivery fees. We are doing our best to maintain costs but expect some challenges here. The food and beverage department have brought back all of their team, and are preparing new menus with excellent choices, including many ACC favorites; please let us know what you would love to see going forward. Our banquet, wedding and golf outing bookings are strong, which will generate substantial revenue to minimize our fixed expenses. Marcus and his team have been working hard getting the course ready and we are hopeful that the golf course will open this weekend or very soon after! The 2022 tournament booklet is now available with many of our traditional tournaments as well as a couple new and exciting ones. Our pro shop will welcome the return of Andrew and Joel this year, again enhancing playing with the pros and adding additional lesson opportunities to strengthen your game. Membership levels and renewals have remained strong; although we had a few resignations, we are level with 2021 numbers and expect a big push of new members. The current membership count is 226 golfing and 106 social. Our commitment to you is to have a safe and enjoyable place for you and your family to relax, socialize and play. Thank you for being part of making ACC a memorable place we all enjoy; please feel free to contact me at [email protected] with any questions, concerns, or compliments.

Manager’s Message

The winter flew by, and it was great to be able to see members enjoying the Club during a time we have traditionally been closed. Between Valentine’s Dinner, Winter Carnival, Evening in Paris, Karaoke Night, and Tennis Platform events members had many opportunities to socialize and have fun. All of us are looking forward to welcoming members back full time as the snow clears and spring rolls in! Our Thursday Prime Rib Night was a great success and we plan to continue this monthly – make plans to join us for our next one on April 21 st . We’re returning to our popular brunch format for Easter on April 17 th and will have a full house. Wine Pairing Dinner, Book Club and All Women’s Kick -Off

Cocktail Party are all on the calendar for this month as well. You can visit our website 24/7 to view and make reservations for all our events. Dinner service has expanded to include Wednesday evenings, making the Grille Room open Wednesday – Saturday evenings until Tuesday, April 26 th when we will offer full dining service from 11 AM to close, Tuesday-Sunday for the remainder of the season. As our dining services resume, I just wanted to remind all members that we are enforcing our Dress Code and cell phone policy. We allow tasteful, appropriate denim in the clubhouse and outside areas. Men should always remove hats before entering any dining room, and all cell phone calls must be taken outside dining rooms into the hallways or outdoors. The full Dress Code is available on our website. Thank you for adhering to these policies and letting your guests know. We’re preparing for an awesome summer at ACC, with the return of our summer camps, swim team, and our traditional family events. Lori Blosser returns as our Camp Director, we’re welcoming Maggie Hartman as our Head Swim Coach, with Eliana Wallock as Pool Director and Assistant Swim Coach. In response to member requests, we scheduled a Red Cross Babysitting Class April 9 th which sold out quickly! If we have enough demand, we hope to offer an additional session later in the year. As the snow melts on the course, we are excited to begin a new golf season. Assistant Golf Professional Andrew Daily will be coordinating the TNT Men’s League on Tuesday nights (beginning April 26 th ), working with the Women’s League on Wednesday nights beginning May 4, and assisting with scoring for the ROB League on Thursdays. Assistant Golf Professional Joel Aptaker joins the team on April 26 th and will be coordinating PGA Junior League and continuing its very successful season from last year. He’ll also be working with the Tuesday Morning Ladies 9-Hole League starting play on May 3 rd , now with a 9 AM shotgun instead of tee times. Jim Bettini has taken over coordinating the ROB League (Retired Old Boys), with heartfelt thanks to Robert Murphy who led the group for so many years. You don’t have to be retired to join in the fun – just a golf member aged 55 or older! Bob Macnary will now be managing locker room operations since Wayne has retired. He is continuing to work on improvements to both men’s and women’s locker rooms, with enhanced guest services, large screen TV in the men’s 19 th Hole, and upgrades throughout the ladies’ locker room. We are pleased to continue to offer the Premier Pricing Program that allows members to purchase merchandise in our shop at cost plus 10%, offering a substantial savings that has been well received by members. Rather than institute a fee for the program as other clubs do to offset the costs, we have introduced a new advertising opportunity on our GPS screens on the golf carts. These are tasteful, discreet ads that reach members without being overwhelming, and limited spots are available per season or the whole year. Contact Glenn Davis for information on pricing and availability.

Manager’s Message Continued

Winter snows and freezing temperatures didn’t stop Marcus and our golf course maintenance team from keeping busy as they diligently monitored turf health and continued with ongoing projects. They are in the process of removing 35 dead or diseased ash and pine trees and this spring we plan to do drainage work on holes 4, 7 and 8. Marcus has had four people return from last year and seven additional team members coming on in the next couple of weeks; he still needs three more, so if you know anyone looking for work, please let him know. The greens are “greening up” well and as long as spring prevails, we expect to be opening the golf course in time for Easter weekend. The three Har-Tru tennis courts are scheduled to be reconditioned before Memorial Day and Shannon will be gearing up tennis operations in mid-May. We have exciting plans in the works for the other two courts, keep posted for further details. Sara-Becca has been busy touring and signing up new members so please be sure to take a moment to welcome these new friends when you see them around the Club. The best advertising for our Club comes from our happy members, so please continue to refer your friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors to Sara-Becca so we can bring them into Albany Country Club! The Albany Business Review recently published an article about the growth of country clubs throughout COVID and included mention of our Club as well. We are excited to be in a growth phase and your active enjoyment of your Club and referral of friends makes that possible.

Thank you for your continued support of Albany Country Club. All of us on staff look forward to the pleasure of serving you again soon!

Rocky Staples General Manager

GPS Advertising Opportunity

PPP Advertising on golf cart gps monitors Spots are already being filled. Don't miss your opportunity! Advertising will initially only be offered to member owned or operated businesses and only go outside the Club if all advertising spots have not been sold.

To offset the cost of the Premier Pricing Program, the Club will use an underutilized resource…selling advertising on the golf cart GPS monitors. The Club is sensitive to the idea that members don’t want to constantly see pop up ads when they are looking for a yardage. As a solution, full screen advertising will only be sold, and pop up, on the four par 3’s and as small inserts at the bottom right of the screen for the other 14 holes. Additionally, advertising will be understated and use cross marketing/promotion of Club events whenever possible.

Click here for pricing options and sample advertising. Click here to purchase an advertising spot.

Looking forward to a great 2022 golf season!

Joel Aptaker and Andrew Daily are returning to assist Glenn in the ProShop. 2021 was the second golf season under the World Handicap System (WHS), and new features were added to the GHIN Mobile App including GPS and course maps (note: locker room kiosks for posting scores are no longer available). Posting of scores at ACC begins on April 15 and ends on October 31. The ProShop is available to assist with questions about the WHS and the GHIN App. A few notes of interest about golf at ACC in 2021. Despite the 8.96 inches of rain in July 2021 (Avg= 4.55”; third wettest July since 1826; tenth wettest month ever in Albany), members played 13094 rounds in 2021. ACC members cited for top number of posted rounds on the region’s 2021 New York State Golf Association list included Patti Rowlands (ranked 2 for women’s all rounds, 188; ranked 8 for women’s 18 Hole rounds, 137); Claire Sellitti (ranked 10 for women’s 9 Hole rounds, 74) and Tim Esmay (ranked 6 for junior’s all rounds, 97). In closing, thank-you to Kevin Bergeron, Joe Parrottino and Bill Young for their much appreciated time and effort on the Golf Committee for the past two years. A special note of thanks to Robert Murphy for his years at the helm of the ROBs. The 2022 Golf Committee welcomes Jim Bettini and Matt Stefanik; Jim will also head the ROBs. All the best for the 2022 season!

Clarification of Tipping, Minimum Wage Fee & Service

Albany Business Review Top 40 under 40

Some members have questioned how tipping in the Grille Room works and it’s relationship with the Minimum Wage Service Fee that is built into your dues, fees, & Capital. Below is some clarification on that. If is remains unclear, please feel free to contact the office and we will happy to explain. Every "chit" you receive for food and/or beverage in the Grill, BNC, Snack bar or on the course will have a 10% service charge implicitly in it, which comes from this minimum wage service fee. This is used to pay a portion of the salaries of service personnel, kitchen and administrative staff. Any additional write-ins will go directly to your server. This means to say, absent any “write in” on your chit, there is approximately 10% gratuity going to all service personnel. However, if you normally tip 20%, then 10% should be written in. Please note, all write in amounts go directly to your server or bartender. It goes without saying, a gratuity is intended to reward great service. Should you feel your service was not up to “par”, you are encouraged to notify management so that all issues can be addressed in an appropriate manner.

Join us in congratulating Albany Country Club’s top 40 under 40

Matthew Crudo senior vice president, construction, Redburn Development Partners

B ANQUET S ERVICE C HARGE , G RATUITY AND T AX : All food and beverage charges are subject to a 15% catering fee and 5% gratuity. Food, beverage and catering fees are subject to 8% sales tax. The monies collected from the Catering fee will be used to pay a portion of the salaries of our Banquet, Kitchen and Administrative Staff. The gratuities will go to your service staff. Additional gratuity is not required, but if your wait staff exceeded your expectations you may leave an additional gratuity that will go directly to the staff who worked your party.
