From the President

by Scott Howry, President, Board of Governors

Spring is here! It is a great time of year to enjoy the Club we have so much to be thankful for. The course is in great condition, and the West nine is now open. It should only be another 2-3 weeks before it is open full time. Tom and his crew did such a great job on the greens. When you see Tom and the staff around the course, don’t forget to thank them for their efforts. They work long hard hours to make our course as great as it is and deserve the thanks. We have a lot of great events to look forward to this month. We have Easter Brunch coming up, as well as our Easter Egg Hunt and Easter Camp for the kids. Friday Night Live will be busy with 5 great events. We also have both the Men’s and Women’s Member-Guest tournaments in April and May. I am also pleased to announce that we will be adding Taco Tuesday in the Grille starting April 12th. If the members enjoy it, we are hopeful to make it a weekly event. Pasta Night on Wednesdays and Basque Night on Sundays continue to be busy and this month will be no exception. Check your calendar and get your reservations in so you will not miss out on all the great events! I hope to see you around, enjoying all the that the Club has to offer!

Seven Oaks Book Club

The Seven Oaks Book Club meets each month to discuss books on a reading list which is selected by mutual consent of the Book Club members. All members of SOCC are invited to attend. Our selection for April is… The King of California by Mark Arax

J.G. Boswell was the biggest farmer in America. He built a secret empire while thumbing his nose at nature, politicians, labor unions and every journalist who ever tried to lift the veil on the ultimate "factory in the fields." The King of California is the previously untold account of how a Georgia slave-owning family migrated to California in the early 1920s, drained one of America 's biggest lakes in an

act of incredible hubris and carved out the richest cotton empire in the world. Indeed, the sophistication of Boswell 's agricultural operation -from lab to field to gin -- is unrivaled anywhere. Our next meeting is Thursday, April 28th at 4pm Please email Bee Barmann at [email protected] to receive information on joining the meeting.

Manager's Message

by Enrique Contreras, General Manager/COO

Happy Spring! Easter will be here before we know it and we are preparing

for Easter Camp, our annual Easter Egg Hunt and Easter Brunch - please don’t forget to make your reservations! Thank you to all the members that continually support our Friday Night Live – it still proves to be a very popular event. Our Heitz Cellars/Brendel Wine Event was very well attended, as was the Cigar Night. All the members in attendance for these events had a wonderful time and Chef Jorge and his Team’s culinary efforts received rave reviews! The April Riedel Wine Workshop is currently full, but you can still get on our waitlist in case of cancellations. Our Days for Happy Hour are Changing!! Beginning April 12th, Happy Hour will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4pm to 7pm. We are kicking off the change with Taco Tuesday in the Mixed Grille on April 12th – we hope you will come and check it out! As the temperatures rise, we need to remind our guests, and our members, that our Dress Code is still in effect - whenever you are in the Clubhouse, men must wear a collared shirt, jeans with holes and cut off’s are not allowed, and shorts and skirts need to be of modest length.

For the safety of our younger members, please do not allow your children/grandchildren to run on or around the Main Putting Green or climb on the creek rocks on the edge of the Oak Terrace.

As a courtesy to other members and our staff, if you make a tee time or a dinner/event/group reservation and you are not able to make it, please call to cancel your reservation. There are many times that we have another member waiting to take your spot or set up for your group may need to be done. When you ‘no-show’ for your tee time or other reservation, the spot is wasted or unnecessary set up work has been done. Our Reception Staff will always call to confirm Member Event reservations 4 – 7 days before any event, if you have a reservation for a Member Event and it is not cancelled within 72 hours, you will be charged accordingly. Thank you for your consideration.

If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions please call me or email me at 661-664-6254 or [email protected].

See you at the Club!

From what I am hearing, everyone seems to be very happy with the new greens surfaces and the new bunkers on the West Nine holes. I am very happy with both the

our weed control is improving, especially over the winter months. We made several weed control treat- ments during the winter and I felt the course was fairly weed free. Now, the real test begins, Spring and Summer weeds. We will, as mentioned above, continue to work tirelessly to strive for a weed free playing surface. Last year we made some great strides in reducing the weed populations, but we still have a way to go.

greens and the bunkers and truly at this point, very impressed with the new greens grass. It’s amazing that greens this young can perform as well as they are. The greens height will remain as they are, we will nurse them through the summer and once we get to their first coring aeration in the fall, we will drop the heights to match the original eighteen. We are sodding the remaining thin areas on green #8 and that green should be ready for play around the time of our Member/Guest Tournament. After several different types of testing and having a Turf Consultant looking at green #8, there is still no rhyme or reason for its slow development. An interesting note: We killed half of our greens grass nursery and seeded it to our new grass, two months after #8’s green was originally seeded. We are now using the sod off the nursery to repair #8 green… Crazy! Spring aeration went well with a few exceptions- most notably. rain. The rain on March 28th set the start of aeration back and created extended periods of slow clean-up. I apologize for this slower clean-up. Starting April 4th we will commence with our an- nual weed control battle. We will make our second Wall to Wall application of Pre-Emergent Crabgrass control and start daily spraying for both Annual and Perennial weeds throughout the roughs. I do feel

On a final note, we would appreciate your help with making your golf course fantastic:

• Please remember to park your cart with all four wheels on the cart path at Green and Tee locations. • Please enter and exit bunkers at the lowest point • Please fix your Ball Marks

Thank you.

From the Golf Shop

by Brad Streza, PGA Head Golf Professional As the calendar now moves into April, there’s a pretty famous Men’s Major Golf Tournament starting in Augusta, GA next

Our 2022 “Spring-Training” Golf Clinic Series completes this week. Thank you to all the mem- bers who participated in these sessions. We will introduce a new Golf Clinic Series in mid-April! Details and schedule is coming next week. We are continuing the weekly Wednesday and Thursday afternoon Junior Golf Sessions, both beginning at 3:45pm. We host our 2nd SOWGA Team Play Event at the Club on April 6th. Our 2022 Men’s Round-Up begins on Thursday, April 7th in a 5:30pm Shotgun. If your schedule permits, these Thursday Men’s Round-Up Rounds are not to be missed! Our 2022 Men’s Member/Guest is April 21st - 23rd. We expanded the Field from 66 Two-Person Teams to 78 Two-Person Teams, and as expected, we are SOLD-OUT! As we look forward to an amazing and memorable Tournament later this month, we are reminding those Members that are in the Field, get your “A” Games ready! With the pleasant weather and the West 9 soon to be open daily, demand for our Starting Times will continue to grow. Here are just a few reminders: • You can make Starting Times two weeks in advance by calling the Golf Shop. We recom- mend making your Starting Times as soon as you can, within that 14-day window. • Please inform the Golf Shop of all the Players in your Group upon checking-in. • It is very important that you cancel any Starting Times you’re not able to make, as we have a daily list of other Members looking to get out and play when we get openings on the Tee Sheet. We are doing our best to always accommodate Members looking to get onto the golf course, even if we have a full Tee Sheet. • Guests are allowed to play golf at Seven Oaks only ONCE per month regardless of what Member is hosting them. The Golf Shop Staff is very excited about all the great upcoming events this Spring and we look forward to seeing you at the Club!

week. Can you say The Masters?!?! Perhaps Mr. Woods will pull-off another ‘Masters Miracle’ next week and get his 16th Major. As of this SOCC Newsletter Release, he’s still in the Field. Who are your favorites to win the Green Jacket next weekend? From Magnolia Lane to the corner of Grand Lakes Ave. and Ming Ave., Seven Oaks had a full-slate of golf activities in March. A HUGE thank you to all the Members who supported our ‘Elite Eight” Demo Day/Fitting Day Events at the Club. Your patrona- ge and support is greatly appreciated! We do have Taylor Made STEALTH Metals and Rogue ST Drivers for member-use as part of our Demo/Fitting Cart Programs in 2022. Just ask one of the Golf Shop Staff to put together a club (or two) and try them out on the Practice Range or the Golf Course. We have a Cleveland Golf Wedge & Wine Clinic on Thursday, April 14th from 3pm-5pm. This event is for both men and women - details and sign up can be found in the Golf Shop. The WEST 9 had a soft opening on March 15th. Tom and his team have done a tremendous job on getting that nine up to speed and growing-in nicely. Golf Course Spring Maintenance is taking-place this week and the early parts of next week. Although Mother Nature set Golf Course Maintenance back a day with some much-needed rain on Monday, March 28th, all the work necessary to complete this important agronomy project will get accomplished. We still have two new SOCC Golf Cart Agreement Lease Options now available for those of you who play a lot of golf and use our SOCC Golf Cart Fleet. Inquire with the Golf Shop regarding those two agreements.
