QUESTIONS ARE THE ANSWER:

HOW TO END 2020 WELL AND SET YOURSELF UP FOR A SUCCESSFUL 2021

• What 2–3 things stick out that really went well for me in 2020?

Depending on when you’re reading this, there is anywhere from a few weeks to possibly a few days left in 2020.

• Based on the things that went well, is there anything I could keep doing or something I should start doing more of in 2021?

For many people, this is a relief because 2020 has been pretty terrible. However, what I’ve learned from successful people is that it’s not their ability to avoid problems or failures, it’s their ability to learn from them. However, in a year like 2020, when we get knocked off our feet like the whole world has, not only do you have to get back up and dust yourself off, but you also have to do a full mental reset.

• What are 2–3 things that stick out that didn’t go so well in 2020?

• Based on what didn’t go as well, is there anything I should do less of or stop doing entirely in 2021?

That’s why this month, I’ll be taking an entire day to take stock of 2020 and do what’s called an annual after-action review.

• Overall, what are 2–3 things I will do to improve in 2021?

I’ve learned over the years that if I’m not getting the results I want in my life in any area, it’s probably because I’m not asking myself the right questions.

During this time, I’ll review the past year and look ahead to the coming year to see where things can improve.

If you want 2021 to be much better than this year, then I suggest you do the same.

“The right answer is smart; the right question is genius.” –Keith Cunningham

One of the best ways to do this is to ask yourself some questions. When doing an annual after-action review, I’ll ask myself questions like the following:

I would highly encourage you, if you’re never heard of it or have never done one before, to do an annual after-action review before heading into 2021. Use the questions above because the answers to those questions will set you up to make 2021 better than you could have imagined.

DON’T FORGET! OUR MEMBER HOLIDAY EVENT IS DEC. 19 DAPHNE FIT BODY BOOT CAMP IS A TOYS FOR TOTS DROP-OFF LOCATION AND WE ARE ACCEPTING ITEMS THROUGH DEC. 11.

Do yourself a favor and take some time this week to reflect on what you want and how you intend to get it.

Let’s make 2021 the best year yet!

How to Eat During the Holidays

Client Success Story Tricia Hughes

Have you ever stood on a scale at the end of the holiday season and wondered how the extra pounds crept on? It’s no secret that a sugar cookie here, a slice of pie there, and a few glasses of eggnog in between can lead to a few pounds gained. When you’re surrounded by Christmas goodies, how can you resist? Luckily, there are a few ways you can protect your waistline this holiday season without completely cutting out your favorite treats. BE CHOOSY When you see a regular buffet of your favorite holiday treats, don’t immediately start scarfing down everything that looks remotely tasty and sweet. First, scope out the food — without a plate — so you won’t be tempted to start eating without really looking. Then, find the treats that are your absolute favorites and choose one or two of them to eat. You don’t have to give up sweets during the holidays; instead, eat with discretion. DON’T GO HUNGRY To ensure that you don’t overeat at a party or buy junk food that you don’t need when shopping, eat a healthy snack before going out. Before you head out to a party, eat a snack chock-full of complex carbohydrates, proteins, and unsaturated fats. Apple slices with peanut butter work, as well as lean meats and cheeses. If you’re headed to the grocery store, eating a filling snack before you go will make you less likely to impulsively scoop up those sugary cookies and pastries in the bakery. DRINK RESPONSIBLY (AND JUDICIOUSLY) If you drink alcohol, keep in mind that each drink will probably be somewhere between 150–225 calories. A glass of eggnog can have as many as 500 calories. Alcohol decreases your self-control when you’re eating, while also increasing your appetite. Make sure that if you’re drinking, you’re not doing so on an empty stomach. And to decrease the number of high-calorie drinks that you consume, drink a glass of water in between alcoholic beverages. The holidays are a minefield for any healthy diet. But with the right tools, you can ensure that by Jan. 2, your waistline won’t be worse for wear.

Before I joined Daphne Fit Body, I was lost. I had spent so much time taking care of my family that I put myself on the back burner while I made sure everyone had what they needed. I was depressed and didn’t feel like myself. I was overweight, tired, had no energy, ate out all the time, and didn’t like looking at myself in the mirror, much less being in a picture. One night I was at my son’s football game and it was senior night, and I realized that he would be graduating one day and I didn’t want him to be embarrassed by me or to be the fat mom escorting him onto the field.

That wasn’t enough, but then not too long after, I truly hit rock bottom. I was trying to tie my shoes and was having trouble bending over. I got on the scale and couldn’t believe what I saw ... 283 pounds! When I read that I was shocked! I remember thinking that number couldn’t be real. I cried and remember praying, asking God to help me. I felt so alone even though I had a very supportive family that loves me. I knew something had to change, but I didn’t know what to do. I had done so many diets and other programs only to fail. Luckily my doctor suggested Daphne Fit Body; she had a patient who went there and found success. I said that I would give anything a try, so I looked them up and thought, “I’m not too sure I can do this.” Then, I was scrolling through Facebook and there was an ad. I knew it was a sign from God. I had my husband call and we both went to orientation and I signed up. I was nervous and excited my first night. I was welcomed with open arms and everyone was so friendly! I started out going three days a week and then took a leap and signed up for the January New Year, New You Challenge, and that is where my transformation took off! I followed their guidance, got stronger, and had more energy. Since joining Daphne Fit Body, I’ve lost over 70 pounds! My family is closer now because of our commitment to a healthy lifestyle. I now have self worth and feel confident in who I am! I changed my self talk and I know God created me for His purpose, and I’m excited to see where that leads. My vision for that is to keep working hard and know that I may have setbacks, but I can push through them with the help of my gym family and be a blessing to others and all that stems from changing my mindset and focus. I can’t wait to look back a year from now and see my blessings and see the difference. Thank you for helping change my life, Daphne FBBC!

5 Ways to Winterize Your Garden

AND BE AHEAD WHEN SPRING BLOOMS

soil erosion, break up compacted areas, and increase organic matter. Try to plant your cover crops about one month before the first killing frost. 4. DIVIDE AND PLANT BULBS. At this time of year, spring bulbs have long since died, but other flowering bulbs, like lilies, may have recently bloomed. About three weeks after they’ve displayed, dig them up and plant the ones that were crowded during the growing season away from other plants. Dig 4–8 inches away from the plant’s growing stalk, lift it out gently, and immediately transplant it elsewhere. 5. HARVEST YOUR COMPOST. Material composted over the summer is likely finished and ready to use. Top your garden beds, amend deficient soils, or fertilize your lawn and landscaping with it to jump-start growth for spring. As the weather gets colder, it’s tempting to adopt a hibernation mentality and avoid getting outdoors to take care of your garden. But if you don’t want to be back at square one when winter thaws and spring arrives, put the work in now. You and your crops will be thankful later.

If you want your garden to thrive when spring comes, then taking proper care of it through winter is essential. Here are five ways you can adequately prepare your garden to survive the chilly season and put yourself ahead of the game come spring. 1. CLEAN UP ROT. Old plants can harbor disease, pests, and fungus. Insects feeding on your plants during summer and fall may leave eggs behind, so removing spent plants from the soil prevents those pests from getting a head start in spring. You can also bury old plants in your garden to reintegrate organic matter and improve soil health. 2. PREPARE YOUR SOIL. Many people reserve this for spring, but winter is a great time to use soil amendments like manure or compost. Adding these nutrients now means they have time to start breaking down and enriching your soil. You also won’t have to wait until your garden dries out in spring to get this step done. Just remember to cover the bed with plastic to prevent winter weather from washing your work away.

3. PLANT COVER CROPS. Sowing cover crops like rye, vetch, legumes, or clover is a great way to help prevent

1/4 tsp peppermint oil

1 cup granular Swerve

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 350 F and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. Place the rolled oats in a food processor and pulse until powdery. 3 Gift-Giving Tips THAT WON’T KILL YOUR SAVINGS

tree. Instead, look to your own talents as a clue to what you should give. If you’re a great crafter, create something unique for the people on your list. If you can offer the gift of time, provide a free night of babysitting for your friends with kids or an experience at the local theater. These gifts have a bonus factor: Recipients love the gift when they open it, and they love it when they get to use it!

Ah, the holidays. It’s a time of sweet treats, family, and giving back — and sometimes giving a little too much. When it comes to the perfect holiday gift, many people spend too much money. The average American spends nearly $1,000 on gifts during the December holidays alone!

It’s possible to cut back and make it to January without major debt. Here’s how.

SET A BUDGET — AND STICK TO IT. Setting a holiday budget ensures you only spend what you can afford. It also narrows down your search. If you choose to buy your neighbor

CHECK YOUR LIST — TWICE! The list is going to be your secret weapon to tackling the holidays with your savings still intact. Start by writing down the name of every person you’d like to get a gift for. Now, with the exception of your immediate family members, narrow the names down to your top five — top 10 if you’re really popular. Now, place the names of the people who didn’t make the cut into a second list. If you still feel the need to do something for them, send homemade cookies or a handwritten note instead of purchasing something. This limits how much you actually have to spend! THINK BEYOND STORE-BOUGHT OR EXPENSIVE ITEMS. Sure, everyone wants this holiday season’s “it” item, but sometimes the best gifts don’t even come wrapped under the

something, but they aren’t your top priority, set their budget at a lower level, like $25–$50. If you have a sibling who has had a rough year and you’d like to make their holidays a little brighter, bump their budget up. This narrows the focus of what you’re looking for so you don’t stumble into something you can’t afford. Ultimately, it’s the spirit of giving during the holidays that makes them so rewarding. With a little ingenuity, you can be generous and avoid the stress of excess debt come January.
