WHAT’S YOUR MORNING ROUTINE?

WHY START OFF UNHAPPY?

DING! You wake up to the alarm on your phone. You turn it off, but since the phone is already in your hand, you might as well check Facebook and the news, right? Wrong. That’s a great way to start the day in a very negative state. Chances are, you’re going to see something you don’t like — bad news, negative statuses, or something else that brings you down. At least, that’s been my experience. So while I used to get on my phone first thing, I’ve been working hard to build a different kind of morning routine. And I have to say, it’s made a big difference. My routine starts with one rule: No internet, phone, TV, or email for the first hour of the day. Instead, I get up a bit earlier than usual and spend time getting into the right mindset for the day ahead. I’ve read two great books lately — Hal Elrod’s “The Miracle Morning” and Craig Ballantyne’s “The Perfect Day Formula.” Each day, I read and do a few things to really start the day off right. Usually, I’ll get up and drink a glass of water. That alone makes a big difference — being rehydrated after hours without fluid intake is invigorating! I’ll also get the blood pumping with a quick five- minute workout — just something to wake me up: jumping jacks, pushups, situps, or whatever gets the job done. After that, it’s time to hop in the shower. I also spend time every morning on devotions and reading the Bible. It’s important to me that I give at least 10 minutes as early as possible to God, thanking Him for what He’s given me and opening myself to what He’s asking me to do that day. After that, I spend five minutes or so meditating. I know that to many, meditation seems a little strange. But it’s one of the few things that almost all incredibly successful people have in common, and

it’s not so hard to do. Sit down in a quiet place and think about breathing. Do this for five minutes. That’s all there is to it!

After that, I’m ready for a healthy breakfast, and I head to work in a positive frame of mind. At the end of the day, I write down three things that I’m grateful for in a journal. And that’s it! It’s amazing what a little routine change can do, but I’m sleeping better and already feel less stressed than in months past.

What’s your routine look like? If you want to shake things up, get up 15 minutes earlier tomorrow and don’t get on the internet. Instead, drink some water, get some exercise, and try a little mediation. I promise, you’ll feel better immediately!

Be well,

- Steven Hadley
