W elcome to the 2021 Virtual Awards and Benefit Reception and the center’s 15th Anniversary Celebration. In these extraordinary times, I am truly humbled by the center’s history, the impact of the center’s work and your tremendous support. It is thanks to your generosity that our work fulfills the Law School’s—and center’s—defining value “In Service to Others” in our community. Over the last year, the COVID-19 pandemic and the debilitating consequences of systemic inequities have exposed deepening fractures in our social landscape, tugging at our national conscience. Since former Dean WilliamMichael Treanor created the center fifteen years ago, in commemoration of the Law School’s centennial, the center has been a force for social justice and expansion of access to justice. The Feerick Center’s 15th Anniversary is a celebration of our community and the collaborations that provide opportunity, hope and possibility to the many in need—and a fitting tribute to our stellar honorees. In collaboration with our students, faculty, alumni, community and government partners, the center has worked to amplify diverse voices and address the essential civil needs of individuals—citizens, asylum seekers and immigrants alike—through advocacy, dialogue, education, and legislative and policy initiatives over the last fifteen years. The center’s virtual work over the past year has remotely assisted consumer

debtors, low-income veterans, asylum seekers, middle and high school students, and domestic violence survivors, among others. Through the Immigrant Justice Project, Veterans Rights Project, Remote CLARO (Civil Legal Assistance Resource Office) Program, NYS Attorney Emeritus Program and LEEAP Educational Project, the center delivered virtual educational and know-your-rights programs, deployed volunteers to remotely provide limited-scope and other legal services, and engaged in advocacy on behalf of vulnerable, marginalized individuals. Critical to our work is your support and the commitment of individuals, like our honorees, to serve. We are privileged that Advisory Board member, Jennifer Jones Austin ’93, is our esteemed host for tonight’s event. Her trailblazing career is a blueprint for service in the public interest and a credit to the Law School. The center is thrilled that she will introduce the story of our honorees—each one a titan of the legal profession and treasured by the center and Law School for their civic spirit, selflessness and utmost professionalism. Tonight, we are deeply honored to recognize truly outstanding leaders of our profession. Each one is a worthy treasure of the center and an inimitable resource of the Law School. We are proud to recognize Cahill Gordon & Reindel, WilliamM. Hartnett ’79 and Artemis Anninos ’96 for nimbly and expertly assisting legions of

people, including children and survivors of domestic violence, suffering untoward consequences as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Cahill’s exceptional commitment to pro bono—and to the Law School—merits special commendation for the firm’s dedicated lawyers, many of whom are Fordham alumni, who serve. The remarkable contributions of Laura A. Coruzzi Ph.D. ’79, J.D. ’85 to the legal and medical fields have transformed the lives of countless individuals and families. Rhonda Cunningham Holmes ’97, a human and civil rights activist, is passionate about ensuring the integrity of the most vulnerable among us. Maura K. Stephen LaSala ’40 and Helen A. LaSala. We applaud the dedication to service that is the essence of each of their lives and their incredible devotion to the center. We are so fortunate for the ever graceful and courageous leadership of Father Joseph M. McShane, S.J. and Dean Matthew Diller. I express my sincere admiration and appreciation to each one for their thoughtfulness and strength as we continue to navigate these difficult days. CONGRATULAT IONS

Congratulations Rhonda Recipient, Honorable Deborah A. Batts Life of Commitment Award

Rhonda Cunningham Holmes is a model of the best that’s within each of us. In a world where civil and human rights are often doled out on a sliding scale based on race, class and gender, she has devoted her career to mitigating the consequences of a flawed system with conviction and focus. She is an integral part of our group of women who leaned on each other and provided a life affirming sisterhood during law school and beyond. We are so proud of you, Kimberley M. Chin, Sadia N. Graham, Joanne D. Quiñones, Chantal N. Senatus, Class of 1997

Eva Coruzzi Schneider ’18 and Robert Schneider

CONGRATULAT IONS

Your legacy extends in so many ways, through so many people, continuing to touch lives even though you are no longer with us. Helen and A. Stephen LaSala, we honor you for so many reasons, but today we honor your lifetime commitment to serving others. It is evident in your children, two of whom are also honorees tonight, and your grandchildren, who proudly support the institutions that nurtured our education and continue to help others. Congratulations to all the Feerick Center honorees. Thank you for your dedication to philanthropy and social justice.
