MCHS Partnership Impact Report 2020

MARSHFIELD CLINIC HEALTH SYSTEM PARTNERSHIP IMPACT REPORT 2020 UPDATE U W S P

HEALTH SCIENCES

AND WELLNESS

At UW-Stevens Point, we are six months into merging the Schools of Communication Sciences and Disorders, Health Promotion and Human Development, and Health Care Professions into one School of Health Sciences and Wellness (SHSW). Although there are many operational details to iron out, we are already seeing the benefits of coordinating student recruitment and retention efforts, streamlining our curriculum, and enhancing interprofessional education opportunities. I consider myself fortunate to be working with so many dedicated professionals, generous with their time and talents, working to provide the best education possible to our students. Our partnership between Marshfield Clinic Health System (MCHS) and SHSW is truly special. We shared 40 students this year. There were 28 students who completed clinical placements and internships at MCHS in athletic training, child life specialist, clinical laboratory science, health care administration, health promotion and wellness, nursing, and speech language pathology. Another 12 students worked as volunteers for the MCHS Community Connections Team which was able to continue during the pandemic from a UWSP campus location. We are establishing new partnerships with physical therapy clinical education, outpatient speech-language-pathology services at MCHS Stevens Point Center, and a health science bachelor’s degree program for radiology technologists trained at MCHS. Our relationships are strong, productive, and will continue to grow because of the sincere dedication of our two institutions to teach and train the next generation of health professionals.

Despite the pandemic, UW-Stevens Point saw a 25% increase in first-year student enrollments, whereas the national average of first-year class size declined by 16%. UWSP is more effectively communicating that we are among the more affordable universities with a real commitment to hands-on learning. Our newly merged School of Health Sciences and Wellness is sharing introductory courses and allowing undergraduate students seamless transitions between health-related majors as they discover their career path. ADVISORY COUNCIL

The UWSP Health Advisory Council (HAC), a diverse group of health care leaders in Northcentral Wisconsin, was established in 2019 to advise the university’s growing health-focused academic programs. This group of dedicated leaders is instrumental in providing the tools, insight, and guidance needed to determine the strategic direction of UWSP’s healthcare programs, which will result in more students better prepared to join our regional healthcare workforce. In a short amount of time, thanks to the dedication of this group and the leadership from HAC Chair Dr. Narayana Murali, MCHS Executive Director, UWSP has determined Social Determinates of Health to be a top priority of the new School of Health Sciences and Wellness based on the needs of the region as well as UWSP’s strengths in prevention and wellness. The pandemic has only solidified this as a priority as we have witnessed how social determinants of health-including poverty, physical environment and race or ethnicity-can have a considerable effect on COVID-19 outcomes. UWSP couldn’t be more grateful to this group of dedicated regional leaders for the partnership and guidance as we build a super school of health that produces a new generation of healthcare professionals prepared to improve patient health in Northcentral Wisconsin.

Dr. Narayana Murali Marshfield Clinic Health System Executive Director
