I SEARCHED 8 ACRES FOR THE WORLD’S BEST PRESENT THE SCAVENGER HUNT THAT MADE MY CHRISTMAS

As I’m writing this newsletter, my wife, Marah, and I are

my parents did for me when I was a basketball-obsessed 10-year-old. I still consider that Christmas the best one ever, even though it was more than a decade ago. I think I’ve mentioned my passion for basketball before, but in order to understand just how excited I was about this gift, you have to remember I was completely, totally, head- over-heels in love with the sport. I pretty much lived and breathed basketball. Still, I had no clue my parents were getting me something basketball-related when they told me they’d created a Christmas scavenger hunt for me. I grew up on 8 acres, and the clues my parents made had me going all around the place trying to figure them out. Even after all that, though, only the end of the scavenger hunt really sticks in my mind. I opened the last clue and found out that I had to rake up a bunch of leaves to get my present. Grumpily, I picked up the rake and started pushing the leaves around, thinking, “Ugg, will I ever get this gift? Will it even be worth it?” That was at the very second I looked down and realized I could see the lines of a basketball court underneath the leaves. Oh man, was I excited! My dad pulled out the basketball hoop from wherever he had hidden it, and I got down to playing right away. Luckily, we don’t get much snow here in North Carolina, so even on Christmas, it was probably 60 or 70 degrees — perfect basketball weather. If I can give my son even a fraction of that excitement one day, I think I'll have succeeded as a dad. For now, I’ll just keep talking to him in Marah’s belly and crossing my fingers that he likes basketball, too.

expecting our little boy to be born any day now. By the time this story hits your mailbox, he might already be here! I still can’t believe I’m going to be a dad, but I also can’t wait to share photos and updates with you in our next few newsletters.

Now, though, fatherhood is still a waiting game, and with the holiday

approaching I’ve been thinking a lot about what it will be like to have Christmas with a baby. Having the little guy around is definitely going to change our usual routine. We typically go to church as a family on Christmas Eve and then have a Christmas morning breakfast with everyone at our house. After eating my weight in food and opening all of the gifts, I’m usually ready for a nap, but with a newborn around, this year I’ll probably be ready to hit the hay before we even sit down! Mulling these things over has gotten me thinking about what Christmas was like when I was a kid and the epic gifts I might be able to plan for my son one day. It will definitely be hard to top what

From my little family to yours, merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

HOW TO EAT DURING THE HOLIDAYS WITHOUT SACRIFICING YOUR FAVORITE FOODS OR YOUR WAISTLINE

3 JOSH CO HOW WILL YOU SU

This fall, Yelp reported that 163,735 businesses have closed across the country since March 1, and most of those shutdowns will be permanent. It’s awful to see small businesses shuttered, which is why we’re urging everyone to support their local shops this holiday season. Here in Farmville, North Carolina, Josh loves shopping local. In fact, he’s so passionate about it that he wants to take you on a virtual tour of his favorite hometown spots! Welcome to Farmville, folks.

Have you ever stood on a scale at the end of the holiday season and wondered how the

extra pounds crept on? It’s no secret that a sugar cookie here, a slice of pie there, and a few glasses of eggnog in between can lead to a few pounds gained. When you’re surrounded by Christmas

goodies, how can you resist? Luckily, there are a few ways you can protect your waistline this holiday season without completely cutting out your favorite treats.

JOSH’S TOP PICK: CAFÉ MADELEINE BAKERY AND WINE

Small-town North Carolina is the last place you’d expect to stumble upon an artisan French bakery, but Café Madeleine is the real deal. Walking in, visitors are welcomed by pastry cases stacked with mouthwatering Kouign-Amanns, sweet and savory croissants, macarons, eclairs, and more. “Café Madeleine is just incredible,” Josh says. “I lived in Spain for eight weeks, and while I was there, I went to Paris, but this shop rivals anything I had over in Europe.”

BE CHOOSY When you see a regular buffet of your favorite holiday treats, don’t immediately start scarfing down everything that looks remotely tasty and sweet. First, scope out the food

— without a plate — so you won’t be tempted to start eating without really looking. Then, find the treats that are your absolute favorites and choose one or two of them to eat. You don’t have to give up sweets during the holidays; instead, eat with discretion. DON’T GO HUNGRY To ensure that you don’t overeat at a party or buy junk food that you don’t need when shopping, eat a healthy snack before going out. Before you head out to a party, eat a snack chock-full of complex carbohydrates, proteins, and unsaturated fats. Apple slices with peanut butter work, as well as lean meats and cheeses. If you’re headed to the grocery store, eating a filling snack before you go will make you less likely to impulsively scoop up those sugary cookies and pastries in the bakery. DRINK RESPONSIBLY (AND JUDICIOUSLY) If you drink alcohol, keep in mind that each drink will probably be somewhere between 150–225 calories. A glass of eggnog can have as many as 500 calories.

Alcohol decreases your self-control when you’re eating, while also increasing your appetite. Make sure that if you’re drinking, you’re not doing so on an empty stomach. And to decrease the number of high-calorie drinks that you consume, drink a glass of water in between alcoholic beverages. The holidays are a minefield for any healthy diet. But with the right tools, you can ensure that by Jan. 2, your waistline won’t be worse for wear.

3 STOCKING STUFFERS YOUR PATIENTS WILL LOVE MAKE THEIR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING EASY!

Colleen Starling, who owns the cafe, gets to work at 2 a.m. each day to start baking. You can check out photos of Café Madeleine’s treats on Facebook, but we’re warning you: Don’t look while you’re hungry. UPPORT SMALL BUSINESSES THIS CHRISTMAS? 3 LOCAL SHOPS OULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT

After years of opening stockings packed with nothing but fuzzy socks and candy, we’re ready to shake things up a bit — and we bet your patients are, too! This year, budgets are tight, which means practical gifts are in. That’s not great news for candy sales, but it is for chiropractors like you. By stocking your office with these useful items, you can make your patients’ holiday shopping a breeze and save them a trip to the store.

THE BEST PLACE TO TRY SOMETHING NEW: THE GLASSTATION What happens when you combine a gas station and a glass-blowing studio? You get The GlasStation, Farmville’s local outpost for glass-blowing demonstrations and classes. No one pumps gas here anymore, but locals can visit the education hub to watch the master glass blowers at work. As of this writing, The GlasStation is closed to the public because of COVID-19, but they’re still sharing great glass-blowing content on their Facebook page, Facebook.com/ECUGlasStation/.

THE COLLECTOR’S DREAM SHOP: VINTAGE POINT Last but not least, no trip to Farmville would be complete without a stop at Vintage Point, a local store packed with vintage toys and memorabilia like sports trading cards, rare albums, and strange coins. Josh has stopped in before to admire the antique toys and search for Lone Ranger memorabilia. If you visit Farmville, you won’t want to miss this shop.

MUST-HAVE GIFT NO. 1: ARCHIES ARCH SUPPORT FLIP‑FLOPS

We know, we know — flip-flops in December? Depending on where you live, it might seem counterintuitive to sell flip-flops when it’s cold outside, but these are hot ticket items year-round. Flip-flops inspire people to dream up their next tropical vacation, and these particular pairs are special because they look like “normal” flip-flops but offer the support and comfort of an orthotic. Archies are the shoe of choice for professional athletes, physiotherapists, and chiropractors alike. Your patients will love them, too!

We hope you’ll support the local businesses in your area this season. Skip Amazon for your Christmas shopping. and try ordering dessert from a local bakery or even getting your Christmas ham from a nearby farmer. When times are tough, every dollar helps!

MUST-HAVE GIFT NO. 2: OMNI MASSAGE ROLLERS Your patients might have to wait to use their flip-flops, but our Omni Massage Rollers can be put to work right away. If you’re not familiar with the Omni yet, it's basically a small massage ball in a roller cap. It’s an easy- on-the-hands way to give a shoulder massage, and people in pain can load it with topical cream, then roll it on their sore spots to get relief. Not only are these massage rollers practical gifts for older people and athletes of all ages, but they also come in fun colors to suit every taste.

MUST-HAVE GIFT NO. 3: CHIROPRACTIC T-SHIRTS We hate scratchy T-shirts, and we know you do too! That's why we launched our own super-soft Chiropractic T-shirt line. Many of our customers wear them for casual days at the office, and also sell them in their practices. That said, these shirts also make great gifts for your staff (or yourself)! You can never have too many quality T-shirts, and ours are made of 100% ring-spun combed cotton. For every shirt you purchase, we’ll donate $1 to a worthy cause.

HAVE A LAUGH!
