Enhancements to your Equity Membership We have some really exciting news for Equity members. First, many of you have asked to have some form of recognition for being an Equity member. Your Membership Committee working with the Board of Directors has subtly redesigned the Equity name badge adding a line showing that you are an Equity Member. If you would like to have your name badge replaced, please send an email to Cynthia Hultquist at [email protected] showing how you would like your name to read on the new badge. You will then exchange your former badge for the new badge. Also, you may remember that the wine bin program was modified so that only Equity members are allowed to have bins on the property. Below are the instructions for the new program. Wine Bin Program The Wine Bin Program is for Equity Members only. The wine is stored in our temperature-controlled cabinets. Red wines are stored at a temperature between 58-62 degrees and white wines are stored at a temperature between 48-52 degrees. An Equity Member can have one free wine bin either red or white that holds two standard 750ml bottles of wine. • Additional wine bins may be rented for one year at $50 per bin. Current year May 1, 2019 to September 30, 2019 total fee $25. Full year October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2020 total fee $50. • The corkage fee is $10 per bottle. • You may restock your bin as many times as you want. • Your name will be placed on the bin. • Only authorized staff will be allowed to stock the bins or withdraw the wine when requested. • Members are not allowed to access the wine cabinets. • If you want to use a bottle of wine on a Friday Evening, please order it in advance when you make your reservation so that your server can have it available for you. • Wine Bin Procedures An Equity Member who would like to participate in the wine bin program should e-mail the Front of House Manager at [email protected] with the following information. • Requesting use of your free wine bin please provide your name, member number and whether you would like a red or white wine bin. • If you are renting an additional wine bin, please provide the same information as above. Your account will be charged the appropriate amount. • Your wine bottles must have your name attached. Bring them in only to Pam Dorr, Tina Carano, Nicolas Fournier or Cynthia Hultquist. • A log will be kept on all wine bins.

MIYC Member Events By Angela Holt

The merry month of May started off with Marco Island Yacht Club's own Kentucky Derby Day affectionately called 'Hats and Horses.' More than 150 attended the race day dressed in their finest. The contentious results of the most "Exciting two minutes in sports" this year didn’t dampen our crowd. There were trophies given in seven categories from most elegant hat to most humorous. Gillian Hamer provided the prizes including the generous cash prizes for those who chose the winning horses. Chef Bob served an authentic Derby Day Buffet complete with bourbon pecan pie, and Pam and Staff found a way to make it 'look simple' as they served a record crowd. Mother's Day Brunch was an elegant affair, as was International Wine and Dine where Chef treats us to a taste of different cuisines from around the globe along with excellent wine pairings. Although our summer schedule officially begins at the Memorial Day Weekend as we say Bye, Bye to the Burgee Bar for the summer, the events will continue throughout June, July and August. A calendar has been sent to each of you outlining our plans to keep you busy. On June 8th we have our karaoke night with Janice Diaz. Although the first time we tried this, I was wary as to members being willing to approach the mic.

We l l , was I su r p r i sed . Everyone in the room took their turn as singles or in groups to entertain us. On June 15, we have Cooking w i t h C h e f B o b w h e r e Members learn the tricks of the trade and then dine on the creations. Our Independence Day Event will be a picnic and

dance on June 29th. Omar Baker will keep us on our feet as we celebrate the USA at the Club. July we have two great parties planned . . . Margaritaville Night with a Jimmy Buffet tribute on July 20 and "Lob-sta" Fest on July 27th which is an “order as many tails as you can eat” affair. But that's not all. In August we will have a trivia night, a Latin Night ( learn the salsa) and a Labor Day Weekend Luau. So, plan on joining us whenever you're in town because there is never a dull moment at MIYC.

Chairman’s Report

The old proverb “April showers bring May flowers” doesn’t always apply here in Marco Island. But the month of May does signal the departure of many of our residents for points North. And the same is true for members of our Club. I am seeing fewer around, and many are packing to head North by the end of the month. Our 2018-2019 Season is definitely winding down! The final ‘Signature Event’ for this season was the Hats and Horses Event. We have been holding this event every year, for the past 4 years, to celebrate the Kentucky Derby. And this year, the event was one for the record books! Nearly 150 members and guests attended the event this year. Trophies were awarded for a number of ‘Hat’ categories. The committee selecting the winning hats in each category certainly had a difficult job this year, as the variety and creativity demonstrated by members and guests was at its all-time best! Gillian and Dan again donated trophies for the best hat contest and the prize money to the individuals who picked the winning horses. Thank you, Gillian Hamer & Dan McElaney!! The donations to the Mariner’s Fund this year topped $4,850. Thank you to all who donated this year. We have several projects on our Mariner’s List, and the donations certainly help! And it was a memorable Kentucky Derby as well. For the first time in Derby history a challenge was upheld and the first horse across the finish line did not win. That also had a significant impact on individuals who filled out our racing sheets! I also want acknowledge Angela Holt and the entire Member Events Committee. The number of and quality of special events this year was extraordinary! I encourage everyone to take a minute and go back to look at the calendar of events throughout the season. Each month was packed with special events. Starting with the Welcome Back Party, to the Christmas and

New Year’s Events, through to Valentine’s Day, March Madness, Motown, the Member Talent Show, and culminating with the Hats and Horses Event, I think you will agree with me that this year the Member Events Committee really ‘hit the mark’! Thank you to the

Dave Everitt Chairman

individuals serving on and supporting the Member Events Committee for your dedication, your commitment, and your hard work to make these events happen. And, thank you to all the members who participated in the events this year. I believe the attendance numbers were the highest in recent memory. And, everyone I spoke with had a grand time. These events have really made belonging to the Marco Island Yacht Club a special treat! We are now heading into the ‘off season,’ but events at the Club continue. On the calendar is Karaoke Night, Cooking with Chef Bob, Margaritaville, Lob-sta Fest, Trivia Night, and a Labor Day Weekend Luau among many other schedule activities. If you stay here through the summer, make sure you sign up for some of the events, and if you come back for a visit during the summer, be sure to include the Club in your planned activities! For those of you who are heading home this month, I wish you safe travels and an enjoyable summer. For those of you staying here…I’ll see you around the Club!

In late April, Carol and I left on a three-week vacation that included a Transatlantic Cruise on the Celebrity Edge and a trip to Ireland. We experienced many wonderful places including a trip to Omaha Beach in the Normandy region of France. The experience gave us an even greater appreciation of Memorial Day, witnessing the sacrifice and incredible bravery of the soldiers who took that beach 75 years ago this month. At the Club, we observed a moment of silence at Evening Colors on Memorial Day Weekend in honor of America’s fallen heroes.

In May, the Boating Committee finalized plans for a March 2020 cruise in the Bahamas. Members will charter four Moorings 51-foot power cats and cruise for a week in the Abacos. Several members will cruise to our destination on their own yachts. Summer is upon us, and many Members have left for northern climates. For those who live in Marco Island year-round, the Club will still have may boating related events. Please watch your email for cruise information including Sunset, Day and Extended Cruises. MIYC Membership

This is my favorite part of the column, to welcome all of our new and returning Members! Barbara Gambrill and Jim Liguori have joined us as Social Members. They were referred by Karena DeWitt. Mark Mosley has joined Karena’s membership! Judy Hamilton and Craig Seelman have joined us as Full Members referred by Carri Kendall. They are building a home by the Kendalls. Other Club Members the Comeauxes, Diana Pagach and the Schwartzmans are also neighbors. Look out for that carpool! They are from the St Louis area. Sandy Banks and Mike O’Brien also have joined us as Full Members! They have a home in Lely and are coming from Connecticut. They are looking forward to taking part in Fishing and Boating activities. Alice and Don Strong have returned to us as Equity Members! Please welcome aboard all these new Members! Be sure to mark your calendar for all the exciting events that our Member Events Committee plans for us as well as our Boating Committee! Please remember to wear your nametags AND remember to make reservations for all events and dining. It so helps the Staff to be able to have the appropriate number of servers available. Even if you are away from us this summer, please take the time to update your biography in the roster portion of the website. We really would like to have as many bios as possible on the website! We love to get to know our Members! Enjoy your summer and keep bringing us new Members! Vicki Bretthauer (for Co-Chair Kathy Caruso, too)

Sadly, our Membership Director Cynthia Hultquist’s mother passed away on May 13 th . Our condolences go out to her. Cynthia had recently brought her mother down from Baltimore to live with her in Florida so her mom’s final days were happy as she got to be with her daughter. The Equity Badges are really popular! They are understated but a nice form of recognition for our Equity members. If you are an Equity Member and would like to exchange your badge, please email [email protected] with how you would like your name badge to read. Cynthia, Tina and Elaine will have your badges waiting for you at the reception desk. Be sure to bring your old name badge with you as we are recycling the badges! Member Referral is one of my favorite ways for us to gain new members so let me remind you about our Member Recruiting Member Program! Through September 30 th , any new Member you refer who joins the Club as a Full or Social member receives a 25% discount off of joining fees! Effective October 1, there will be no more discounting of Membership fees for Social Members as we are nearing our quota on Social memberships. Also, the Member Recruiting Member Discount for Full Membership will be reduced to 20% so REFER THOSE NEW MEMBERS NOW! We also have a bonus for you - If you sponsor a new Member to our Club, you and the new member each receive a $100 gift certificate for Food and Beverage. Let me share our upgrades of Memberships with you! Kevin and Michelle Hennessy and Linda and Tom Sessa have upgraded to from Full to Equity Membership! Susan and Gary Hieftje have upgraded from Social to Full Membership!

On the Water with Shelly and Dave in their new vessel - Paradox! What are MIYC Members up to this Summer?

Greetings to all now that we are back on Marco! We took the plunge (much to Shelly’s dismay, angst, and chest pain!) and found ourselves a boat. Having had our 1985 Chris Craft 38’ on Table Rock Lake, we have found that being on the water provides a great deal of fun. With the employment of a fair amount of rationalization, it seemed like a good idea to consider something to use for our Florida time. We had earlier this year looked at a 1982 DeFever cruiser which turned out to be a total disaster at the time of its pre – buy inspection. Oddly enough, we found our used Seahorse trawler while out on Florida’s east coast the day after the DeFever debacle. Formerly Pegaus and then Pamalynn II, she is now Paradox II (our Missouri boat came with the moniker Paradox). We hope to have a renaming ceremony this summer on Marco!

sipping one’s coffee while the water and other boats slip by in the quiet. The pilot house works great as a place to escape the sun and elements but the boat also has an upper helm wh i ch i s g r ea t f o r docking, anchoring, and c l o s e – q u a r t e r maneuvering. We hope to get the boat out to the Bahamas which tends to have shallow water and a high vantage really helps when dropping the hook and in trying not to drag the bottom! So, day one took us down to Key Biscayne. Patrick knows the waters well and got us through the Port of Miami area and in the back way to Biscayne. One cool benefit of belonging to a yacht club is the chance to visit other places via reciprocal privileges. Often, the first night dockside is free. So, we managed to get a slip at Key Biscayne Yacht Club (yes - free!) We enjoyed a cold adult beverage by the pool and later had a delightful dinner ashore. Again, that crack – of – dawn thing saw us underway and heading back to the outside. We bid adieu to the Miami area (in the background) and went out to the Hawk Channel which runs between the Keys and a line of reefs. Biscayne Bay has an area that had about thirty homes on stilts. Storms have taken their toll and regulations prevent rebuilding, yet Stiltsville still has a few structures remaining. (See next page)

Anyway, a few weeks back we brought the boat around from North Palm Beach. Captain Patrick accompanied us as this was our first cruise on both this boat and through these waters. Lake Okeechobee has been low such that going on the outside appeared the best option and, fortunately, the weather held. We had a great trip with three fairly long days. We had thought ourselves to be sailors and have probably recounted our experience in putting a boat into charter service with some friends. However, the uber – comfort of a trawler won us over. We had cruised in wet, chilly Vancouver and enjoyed the ride from a helm like this while passing sailors hunkered down in their foul – weather gear. Here’s a pic of Captain Shelly boldly manning the helm! We got an early start each day and were actually underway at first light. There are few things as peaceful as

Marco Island Yacht Club

" 13

Our plan for day two was to do a reciprocal at the Marathon Yacht Club but our boat had other plans. As with flying, one should really get to know the systems aboard. Our fuel runs from a tank on each side down via gravity to a 160 – gallon keel tank. It turns out that the previous owners monitored the lower tank, refilled from the port and starboard ones as needed, and then shut the valves off. So, excitement ensued when we lost first one engine and then the other. This resulted in air getting sucked into the fuel filters which precluded restarting once we filled the keel tank. Tow Boat US came to the rescue and got us to a mooring ball in Boot Key Harbour. We got a crash course in bleeding air out and refilling the fuel lines which put us back into commission. Lessons learned hard the ones learned best so we hope not to repeat that mistake! That night saw us enjoy a nice pork tenderloin dinner that Chef Shelly whipped up. Yours – truly lives to eat. Paradox II has a decent galley with microwave and propane stove / oven. We have found that dining out is often expensive and, not infrequently, disappointing. We like to cook and have enjoyed many a tasty meal aboard our boat back home as well as on sailing trips. Here is a view of the Seven Mile Bridge shortly before our minor Diesel disaster. We left Boot Key for our last day of the trip which was about a twelve – hour transit. The Gulf offered us another day of lovely weather. Everyone took a turn at the helm which allowed time for some short siestas (“safety naps”) for off – duty folks who had to get up early once again.

Trawlers tend to cruise efficiently at seven or eight knots which offers a more sedate experience. There must be some sort of Yen associated with sitting at the wheel, looking out at the water, and enjoying the quiet. Marco slowly came into view as we approached from the south. We passed along the beach, found our way to the Marco River, and then to our slip with minimal excitement. Our neighbors, the Swazyes and Hathaways, greeted us with balloons and champagne – sparkling grape juice for grandson Luke. Here’s a pic of the intrepid voyagers back home with egos, extremities, and fiberglass intact Captain Pat joined us for dinner at our Island Gypsy on Isles of Capri. We celebrated with some tropical libations and an order of their famous onion rings which are obscenely big and good. Truly the best in the world! Anyway, that’s a

view of our short transit in pictures. We hope to have lots of adventures aboard with friends and family. Take care for now, Shelly and Dave

TheMarrs are kinda busy, too! Jim & Linda Marr are having a busy summer. The minute school let out, they gathered up the kids and flew to Roundup, Montana to visit daughter, Sarah and her family. They live on 160 acres in the Bull Mountains outside of Billings. Paradise with hiking, cattle branding/banding (ouch!)/vaccinating cows, horses, touring hot springs, Yellowstone (with Senior Passes!) and meeting new friends. Then, back to St. Louis. Next day it’s off to NYC for Linda. Plays (Four in four days!), food, people watching and Gardens. Then ten days on Marco Island. Can’t wait to see everyone who remains! Then with golf, the Lake and Kids shooting tournaments, the summer with race by. Everyone have a wonderful summer!

The Carusos Hosted Visitors MIYC was well represented in Asbury Park NJ! MA & Don and Peter & Wendy were visiting Kathy & David in Lavalette, NJ, their summer home.

FCYC Update

The Florida Council of Yacht Clubs The Florida Council of Yacht Clubs (FCYC), comprised of 36 yacht clubs including Marco Island, meets six times a year. The most recent meeting, which our Board Chairman and I attended, was at the St Petersburg Yacht Club. The next meeting in March will be at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club in Indian Harbour Beach. These meetings are open for all full and associate club members to attend. You can travel by land or take your boat. If you are interested or would like to learn more about FCYC, please contact me. As a note for your calendar, our Marco Island Club will be hosting the general meeting in May of 2021. FCYC hires government affairs lobbyists, Johnson and Blanton, to overwatch all legislative issues concerning boating and the waterways in Florida. Highlights of the report they gave in St. Petersburg include (1) possession of shark fins is no longer allowed, (2) a gopher tortoise license plate has been

May Sunset Cruise

Sunset Satisfaction We had a terrific turnout for our Sunset Cruise May 22nd! It seems like more people are staying on the Island longer as we move from Spring to Summer. And who can blame them when we can enjoy beautiful sunsets like this out in the Gulf with friends?

May Day Cruise

Island Gypsy Idyll The Island Gypsy is always a hit with day cruisers, and our May 20th event was no exception! Some came by boat and some came by car—but everyone enjoyed a beautiful day and tasty lunch with friends (not to mention the best Raspberry Mojitos on the Island!)

Mariner's Society Donations from Members make a real difference to the success of Marco Island Yacht Club. Our generous Members enable the Club to make beautiful renovations and provide extra "pop" at events. For example, the Burgee Bar renovation was made possible entirely by Member donations. The bar was expanded, new drop down window covers were installed and attractive curtains and valances were added. How Can I Donate? You can make a general donation or donate for a specific project. We have identified a number of needs and wishes, which are listed in a binder just below a recognition plaque in the lobby area. Here is a sampling of initiatives we are looking for Member donations to fund: • Landscaping around the front of the Club • Upstairs dining room chairs • Major update of upstairs dining room If you'd like to donate to one of these initiatives or any other project of your choice, please download the Mariner Donation Form , on which you can indicate the project you wish to support, the amount of donation and how you wish to pay (separate check, credit card or Club monthly statement.) If there is something special you would like to see happen and would like to financially support, please let any member of the Board, Bridge or Mariner's Committee know. Ahoy Members of MIYC! When I think of the beginning to this summer, three words come to mind- full speed ahead!” Our food and beverage dining participation for the month of May exceeded last year’s revenues by 19%! Wow, that is some very fine news indeed; a trend we are striving to maintain throughout the summer months. Please remember to use our monthly dining survey to express your likes and dislikes so that we may continue to improve and exceed your expectations. Please join me in welcoming new employees Carlos Gomez, Steve Servante and Matthew Vizor. Carlos and Steve will be focusing their efforts on the upkeep and overall maintenance of our facilities while Matthew joins our Culinary Team from Madison, Wisconsin where he worked as a sous chef/apprentice for a well-respected restaurant. We are excited to have them aboard.

A q u a f i t a t M I Y C Aquafit classes will resume at the MIMA pool October 3 at 10am on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy water aerobics - a low-impact activity that takes the pressure off your bones, joints and muscles. Water also offers natural resistance, which can help strengthen your muscles and you can add resistance devices to burn more calories! Exercising in the pool provides the toning and cardiovascular benefits of exercise on dry land with less strain and stress plus it allows for a greater range of motion helping with flexibility and balance. And most importantly, it is enjoyable, fun! As with any other exercise routine, just be certain you get medical clearance from your health care provider before taking the plunge. MIYC Fishing Club Thursday, June 20 th 11:30am Our last overnight fishing trip was to Islamorada FL

where we fished for Tarpon and Shark up to 200 pounds. Everyone caught fish and we had a great time, so we’ve decided to do it again! We're planning another trip to Islamorada in late June when we hope to catch Mahi, Sailfish, Wahoo and Kingfish. Call or email me if you’d like to go. Reservations are on a first come basis. Several Fishing Club members fished offshore in May and caught Red Grouper and a variety of reef fish. The fishing offshore is red hot now, with many fish being caught in 100-125 feet. If you are interested in fishing and would like to join the Fishing Club, please contact me at [email protected] or call me at 847-951-3400.

MIYC Mini Reef Program Helps Clean Our Canals We all love our Island Paradise and the beautiful waters we boat on. Doing what we can to keep our waters clean is a priority at Marco Island Yacht Club. That’s why we are promoting Ocean Habitats’ “Mini Reefs” to Members to be installed under your docks. We have three under our MIYC docks and dozens of Members are installing them, too. . Each reef establishes an ecosystem of aquatic life under the docks which mimics the environment normally found in the prop root system of mangrove trees. Once established, one reef can clean 30,000 gallons of water a day.

House & Staff

Staff Updates: Would like to welcome aboard our two new p a r t - t i me ma i n t e n a n c e employees, Steve Servente and Carlos Gomez; both these gentlemen started the end of May. We already started to catch up on some areas that have been let go for the past couple of months.

I thought that activity around the Club would slow down after Easter, but May continued to be an exciting month with well attended special events and activities. We had over 140 Members and guests attend the Kentucky Derby Event. Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, International Wine and Dine, Sunset Cruise and Evening Colors were all well attended. I am hoping for a busier June and July since some of our new Members are year-round residents and it appears more reciprocals have learned that the Marco Island Yacht Club is the place to go to have fun and a great meal. The Burgee Bar/Burgee Menu officially ended May 31 st . However, whenever lunch or dinner is being served in our Dockside Lounge, you are always welcome to eat at the Burgee Bar or in the courtyard. Be sure to watch for Chef Aylwin’s summer specials. He is planning some sensational menu items and some special deals throughout the summer. Reminder: The Club’s summer hours begin June 1. We will be closed on Monday and Tuesday. Lunch will be served on Thursday and Friday from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Dinner will be served Wednesday through Saturday 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM and Sunday Brunch will be 10:00 AM to 1:30 PM. Please do not forget to call in your reservations for lunch or dinner. Since we have fewer members here during the summer, if there are no reservations for any given night, there is a possibility we will close early.

Robert J DeFeo

Chef Aylwin hired a new cook, Matthew Vizer who also started the end of May. Pam hired a new greeter/ hostess Susan Linn to help when multiple functions are scheduled. Patti Simone also joins us as a bartender and server. Patti has been around Florida for about 15 years and has even served in some management positions. I know you all will meet her at the bar! Some Club updates: The new sound and speaker system has been installed and programmed music and announcements can now be played/heard throughout the Clubhouse, Burgee Bar, Dockside Lounge and Harbour Room. We are in the process of updating our server, software and some computers. See you at the Club, Robert J DeFeo

Great May program . . . did you know . . . The newest theory on how sea turtles navigate is that they can detect both the angle and intensity of the earth’s magnetic field. Using these two characteristics, a sea turtle may be able to determine its latitude and longitude, enabling it to navigate virtually anywhere. Early experiments seem to show that sea turtles have the ability to detect magnetic fields The Moms can store sperm so that not all of the little turtles may have the same Dad? Females may mate with several males

just prior to nesting season and store the sperm for several months. When she finally lays her eggs, they will have been fertilized by a variety of males. It's estimated that only 1 in 1,000 hatchlings will survive to adulthood. Sea turtle hatchlings eat a variety of prey. The temperature of the nest determines a hatchling’s gender. This is called Temperature-Dependent Sex Determination (TSD). Warmer temperatures produce mostly females, and cooler temperatures produce a majority of males. There is a pivotal temperature that produces an equal ratio of males and females Once most hatchlings have emerged from their shells, they climb on top of the discarded eggshells to propel themselves to the top of the chamber. Emerging together increases the chance of survival as many hatchlings can overwhelm would-be predators. A single hatchling would be an easy target. They are guided by the brightest light, which is usually moonlight reflecting on the sea. Turtles avoid shadows, including dune vegetation at the top of the beach, places where danger could lie. Remember if you live on the beach it is Turtle Time...no ambient life at night.
