Roarin’ Back to Marco!

By Angela Holt On October 26th, we had our Signature Welcome Back-Roarin' Back to Marco. The evening was a throwback to the decadent 1920s. With a 1920's Auburn parked by the front entrance to the Club and decorated with Flappers and gentlemen in Tuxedos, we were off to a rousing start. The Members were greeted and given a secret password to gain entrance to the Speakeasy. No one got passed the bouncers without the code. The Staff were dressed in formal uniforms and handed out champagne upon entrance to the Harbour Room. Flappers served as "Cigarette Girls"and mug shot photos were taken. The evening was filled with surprises like a choreographed ensemble dance to Puttin' On the Ritz and a Keystone Cops Raid to gather up those drinking 'hard liquor.' It was a fun night!

1Evening Of Peace & Music Woodstock

Marco Island Yacht Club celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Woodstock with dancing and dining to the tunes of Creedence

Clearwater, Grace Slick, Janis Joplin and more. Yacht Club Members dressed in the look of that day, August 15, 1969, with bell bottoms, tie dye, long hair and the 'girls' with flowers in their hair. Singer Nevada Smith dressed for the occasion and kept everyone on their feet reminiscing over the old tunes. The buffet was topped off with 'Alice B. Toklas' brownies, and funny cookies. One Member who had actually been at the original Woodstock shared memories of the 400,000 thousand attendees who gathered on the 600 acre Max Yasgur Farm in Upstate New York. Chef Robert Aylwin and Member Owen O'Shaughnessy sang Dylan and Crosby Stills & Nash tunes.

Couples Bridge Wednesday, November 13 th - 4:30 All are welcome to play Couples Bridge at the Club. We have a fun group that plays on either the second or third Wednesday of the month starting at 4:00 P.M. Card playing goes on for a couple of

hours, then cocktails, and dinner at 7:00 P.M. A “couple” can be a man and woman, 2 women, or two men. We only play as “couples” for the first round and then we mix it up a bit. No pressure, just a fun evening for all. Contact Diana Winterhalter at [email protected] or by phone 614-284-3792 to get on the list.

Let’s Eliminate the Cost of Paper Statements in the Mail! Postage, paper, envelopes, administrative time—it all adds up! Many MIYC Members receive their MIYC monthly statement both by email and through the mail. We ask that all Members who have email accounts consider dropping the paper mailing to help the Club save time and money! If you still receive a paper statement, please contact Carlota Sanchez, MIYC Accounting, at 239-394-0199 Ext. 306 or [email protected] and tell her you no longer need your statement in the mail. Then when you receive your next email statement, you can either print your statement for your file and

pay by check in the mail (preferred) or go online and pay by credit card. Thank you for playing a part in reducing the overhead of running our Club.

Attention Book Club Members! Our MIYC Book Club and Luncheon series will begin this January 2020, and continue through May. Book Club dates are the last Thursday of each month, 12:00 noon - 1:30 PM. Our reading list has not yet been finalized, so please send your book suggestions to MA Harlacker at [email protected] at your earliest convenience. The selections for our Book Club reading list will be published in next month's Anchorlines.

Bob Aylwin - Manager/Executive Chef

Greetings Members of MIYC! Welcome to November and all the exciting events to follow. October, our first month of our fiscal year was action packed and our F&B numbers certainly attest to this with overall revenue exceeding last year by over 45%! As my Nana Nora used to say, “That is nothing to sneeze at.” These excellent financial indicators show that we certainly are on the right path to obtaining the goals we have set for our wonderful Club. It is exciting for sure! Our upgrades in our air conditioning throughout the building continues with our Dockside Unit scheduled for replacement on November 4 th . Thank you, Mr. Boyce, for your unwavering dedication to bringing our Club up to speed in this area. The difference will be felt throughout the Club with cooler air blowing and our overall electric bill declining with the increase in efficiency. November is full of events and 5-star dining. Please make your reservations early and often. Pam and I run a very tight ship, so the early reservations and special requests really help us

manage our departments with the efficiency of a new air conditioning unit. Thank you for your assistance with this very important subject matter. Remember, your use of the monthly surveys also helps us immensely. I’m sure we would all agree, the Club is brewing with fun and expectation. From Boaters’ Night to Twilight Golf,

Bob Aylwin Manager/Executive Chef

to Book Clubs and Cooking Lessons with me, to Sunset Cruises, Wine Dinners, Fishing Clubs and Sunday Brunches, to Special Events and Fashion Show Luncheons we have collectively built a brand that I believe will stand the test of time. A great thanks to all who make the Club tick. You are all awesome and deserve praise. See you at the Club! Chef Bob

The Season is officially here and it’s great to see so many of our Snowbird friends back in Marco Island. The Boating Committee has planned many great events so that there’s something to appeal to everyone. On November 1-6, we have an incredible Extended Cruise to Key West and Marathon. On November 13, we will get a spectacular “up close and personal” experience with area dolphins onboard Bob McConville’s Dolphin Explorer. Also mark your calendars for the December 8 “Staycation” where you can “boat hop” and enjoy refreshments and good company on a number of yachts in the MIMA Harbor; on December 14

we will participate in the Christmas Street Parade and on December 21, enjoy the lights and beauty of Annual Boat Parade whether you’re in the parade on your boat or watching from the clubhouse, then enjoy a delicious meal from Chef Bob. I recommend you mark your calendars now, then watch for email blasts to keep onboard with all the details. Jeff Comeaux Commodore Jeff Comeaux Commodore

MIYC Member Events By Angela Holt

We opened the 2019-2020 season with a tribute to Woodstock celebrating its 50th anniversary. Nevada Smith, dressed in tie-dye, was a perfect compliment to the evening. Jim McKeown, who had actually been at Woodstock, gave a little insight to the 'real' happenings. A video of the occasion played while members got their groove on. All in all, great fun was had by all. On October 26th, we had our Signature Welcome Back-Roarin' Back to Marco. The evening was a throwback to the decadent 1920s. With a 1920's Auburn parked by the front entrance to the Club and decorated with Flappers and gentlemen in Tuxedos, we were off to a rousing start. The evening was filled with surprises like a choreographed ensemble dance to Puttin' On the Ritz and a Keystone Cops Raid to gather up those drinking 'hard liquor.. It was a fun night!

Now the action is just getting started. On Nov. 7th, we have Italian Night, a fabulous buffet including all Chef's finest dishes as well as Tiramisu. Joey Fiato, a fan favorite, will entertain. Practice your tarantella and join us for a special night. Be sure to attend t he Member s ' Annua l Meeting on November 12th when we hold elections for the Board of Directors.

Yoga at MIYC

Yoga may look like it is just a practice for your body, but many people attribute lower stress levels, less anxiety, and better sleep thanks to Yoga. It is a practice connecting the body, the mind, and the breath, and it is available to all. The best thing about Yoga is that it can be modified for any level, any body, and any age. Even if you have past injury or history of illness, there is a yoga practice available to you. More information to come…. Contact Jill Kiley for more information [email protected]

Chairman’s Report

I have enjoyed seeing all the members visiting the Club as they return from time up North. It’s always fun to see the smiles, the hugs and the handshakes as members renew friendships for the beginning of the fall season! November is an important month for our Club. We are holding the annual membership meeting on the 12 November. We will be sharing information from a number of the Committee Chairs on what was accomplished during the last year as well as plans for the coming year. We have some mi nor by l aws changes for consideration by the voting membership. We have three members standing for the election for two open Board seats. In addition, we have an informational presentation and advisory vote scheduled about the proposed Riverside Marina. If you are a ‘voting member’, you will have received a proxy form for the bylaws, board election and the marina advisory vote. If you are unable to attend the membership meeting in person, please be sure to send in the proxy and ballot forms. As always, do not hesitate to reach out to me or other Board members if you have questions. Also, Non-Voting members, you are more than welcome at this meeting! Everyone please remember to make your reservations for happy hour and dinner after the meeting! (Yes, we will be open for dinner on a Tuesday following the meeting!) We ended fiscal 2019 in very good shape financially. As you know, our fiscal year ends 30 September. We completed the year with strong operating profits for the second year in a row. We paid the interest and principal payments to those members holding the mortgage. And we were to apply our operating income to capital and other reserve accounts, thereby improving our overall financial health. The Board adopted the 2020 Budget in October. We are again projecting an operating profit, which will make it three years in a row of positive operating profits. Our operating results for October and early indications for November appear to indicate we are off to a good start for 2020. I am very proud of the Club Staff and the Operations and HR Committee for the development of the budget and the day to day management of the operations against that budget. The Club Committees are also demonstrating very good budget planning and

operating against that budget, as well. One significant development has been the willingness of our bank to refinance our m e m b e r f i n a n c e d mortgage. The improved financial performance has convinced the bank that we are a good credit risk. We have negotiated a commercial mo r t g a g e , w i t h v e r y favorable terms, that will enable us to pay back the members that stepped up when we needed help. The new mortgage should be in

Dave Everitt Chairman

place by the end of the calendar year. Those members who funded the member financed mortgage were instrumental in helping us move forward in our journey at a very critical time. On behalf of the Board and all members, I want to say, ‘Thank you!’ The improved financial situation at the Club, along with the planned marina addition, will truly set us up for a longer-term sustainable operation. I have spent a considerable amount of time researching how private clubs are changing the way they operate to remain viable in a changing marketplace. Many of the changes we have made are similar to other clubs. Other changes we have made are more unique, but appropriate for our local market and potential member profile. Our ability to continue to improve and adapt to changing market demands will assure our long- term health and viability. I am looking forward to this coming year! We have lots of great activities scheduled, and a number of new members looking forward to participating in Club activities! If you have not already done so, I encourage you to find a way to get more engaged in the Club. It will make your membership more valuable and personally rewarding! See you at the Club! Dave Everitt

Enhancements to your Equity Membership

We have some really exciting news for Equity members. First, many of you have asked to have some form of recognition for being an Equity member. Your Membership Committee working with the Board of Directors has subtly redesigned the Equity name badge adding a line showing that you are an Equity Member. If you would like to have your name badge replaced, please send an email to Cynthia Hultquist at [email protected] showing how you would like your name to read on the new badge. You will then exchange your former badge for the new badge. Also, you may remember that the wine bin program was modified so that only Equity members are allowed to have bins on the property. Below are the instructions for the new program. Wine Bin Program The Wine Bin Program is for Equity Members only. The wine is stored in our temperature-controlled cabinets. Red wines are stored at a temperature between 58-62 degrees and white wines are stored at a temperature between 48-52 degrees. An Equity Member can have one free wine bin either red or white that holds two standard 750ml bottles of wine. • Additional wine bins may be rented for one year at $50 per bin. Full year October 1, 2019 to September 30, 2020 total fee $50. • The corkage fee is $10 per bottle. • You may restock your bin as many times as you want. • Your name will be placed on the bin. • Only authorized staff will be allowed to stock the bins or withdraw the wine when requested. • Members are not allowed to access the wine cabinets. • If you want to use a bottle of wine on a Friday Evening, please order it in advance when you make your reservation so that your server can have it available for you. • Wine Bin Procedures An Equity Member who would like to participate in the wine bin program should e-mail the Front of House Manager at [email protected] with the following information. • Requesting use of your free wine bin please provide your name, member number and whether you would like a red or white wine bin. • If you are renting an additional wine bin, please provide the same information as above. Your account will be charged the appropriate amount. • Your wine bottles must have your name attached. Bring them in only to Pam Dorr, Tina Carano, Nicolas Fournier or Cynthia Hultquist. • A log will be kept on all wine bins.

cruising the Pacific coast of Mexico, and still do it today in our Marco pantry (as well as our pantry on Irish Miss). The dried bay leaves impart no flavor – just remove them and stick them back into the jars before cooking the contents. If the leaves still have a fragrance, you can reuse them in the next batch. In the

Adopted at Home (First in a Series) Did you know that using glass canning jars for your flour, corn meal, corn starch, pastas, rice and such and inserting a dried bay leaf or two will prevent weevils and other bugs? We learned this while cruising. It’s because weevil larvae cannot burrow through glass but are adept at drilling through most plastics. And, because the critters hate bay leaves so much, they refuse to occupy those jars. We did this during our three years

It is always a pleasure to see our members returning to Marco Island. What a fantastic October! Our Roaring 20’s Welcome Back Party really rocked the boat with the largest attendance and some nice revenue. The October Food and Beverage revenue exceeded last year by more than 40%. Great way to start off the new year. As I mentioned in my last article, we have completed a multitude of projects during the summer and will continue to work on finishing some outstanding tasks. Our current plan is to repair the sprinkler system in the front of the Clubhouse the last week of October. The first week of November we plan to have the landscaping around the Clubhouse professionally trimmed (including all shrubs and palm trees) and weeded. Mulch will also be applied around the courtyard with some planting in the front flower bed, depending on available funds. The Club hours of operation for November will be Thursday and Friday for lunch, dinner Wednesday, through Saturday and Sunday brunch. Mark your calendar for our first Grand Sunday Brunch scheduled

f o r N o v e m b e r 1 7 t h . November and December are normally the best times to sit outside and enjoy the scenery while having a great meal at the Club. Remember, when lunch or dinner is being served in the Dockside Lounge the Burgee Bar is always available for drinks or dining. The Burgee Bar will officially open in January, Wednesday through Saturday with extended hours and menu. Looking forward to another exciting and profitable year. See you at the Club! Seas the day with MIYC . . . Are you ready to cruise - eat - talk - laugh - smile - and have a good time?

MIYC Day Cruises are to destinations that are nearby and provide the opportunity to join Members on their boats for a scenic cruise and lunch. The Yachts enjoy wildlife views, playful dolphins, and a beautiful view of our Island paradise as well as spectacular homes. MIYC Extended Cruises are scheduled so that you can participate in part or all of the itinerary. Land Cruisers are welcome to join us by car or ride along on a vessel and we will arrange for hotel accommodations either at the marina or nearby. Some boaters also prefer to stay on shore. The availability of slips, particularly during the season, is always an issue so make your reservations (or just let us know that you are interested so we can keep you informed about the latest plans) now by clicking [email protected] or calling 906 227 7625 so you don't miss the fun! We will be doing a raft up to learn new anchoring techniques, doing our Funtastic trip to Key West, as well as opportunities close by at the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club, the Naples Yacht Club, and Pelican Isle Yacht Club. Also on the schedule is our most popular trip to South

Seas and the surrounding areas such as ‘Tween Waters, Useppa, and Cabbage Key. Our Bahamas trip includes the option of taking your own boat or going with the group by air to the Bahamas where we will charter 51' luxury yachts with assigned Captains and sail short trips to lovely destinations in the beautiful Abacos. In April 2020 we will return to incredible Boca Grande and plans are in the works for a cruise to the Sarasota area as well. All Full Members are invited to join the fun and put new life and laughter into your time on the water! If you have not cruised in this area before you will be able to learn from experienced cruisers and have a relaxing trip. We are on our way to amazing boating adventures next season! We hope the schedule for Extended and Day Cruises inspires you to hop aboard and fall in love with boating at the MIYC. It is amazing where our boats can take us in this destination where winter never visits - at least for very long! Trips like this one epitomize what the MIYC is all about...great camaraderie, new friends, great food, and the opportunity to share our love of boating....join the fun!

MIYC Fishing Club Thursday, November 21 st 11:30am Come and enjoy the Fellowship . . . and some Tall Tails!

The Fishing Club continues to expand with several new Members coming on board. In October, the Gulf was unsettled for many weeks with continued threats of tropical storms and potential hurricanes. The Fishing Club took advantage of the calm backwaters in 10,000 Islands and caught more than 150 Snook and a variety of other game fish on two trips (3-man crews). There were lots of fish with very strong bite on Pilchers and artificial lures. During the trip to Key West and Marathon, several members plan to fish on Tom & Denise Morrison’s 42- foot Hydra Sport “Infinity.” We hope to have great stories about many Wahoo, Mahi, Kings and Billfish. As we move into November and December, the Gulf will start to transition with cooler water temperatures in the high 70’s. This will enhance the bight with Kingfish and Cobia. We will discuss strategy to catch these fish at our November 21 Fishing Club meeting in the Burgee Bar. Mariner's Society Donations from Members make a real difference to the success of Marco Island Yacht Club. Our generous Members enable the Club to make beautiful renovations and provide extra "pop" at events. For example, the Burgee Bar renovation was made possible entirely by Member donations. The bar was expanded, new drop down window covers were installed and attractive curtains and valances were added. How Can I Donate? You can make a general donation or donate for a specific project. We have identified a number of needs and wishes, which are listed in a binder just below a recognition plaque in the lobby area. Here is a sampling of initiatives we are looking for Member donations to fund: • Landscaping around the front of the Club • Upstairs dining room chairs • Major update of upstairs dining room If you'd like to donate to one of these initiatives or any other project of your choice, please download the Mariner Donation Form , on which you can indicate the project you wish to support, the amount of donation and how you wish to pay (separate check, credit card or Club monthly statement.) If there is something special you would like to see happen and would like to financially support, please let any member of the Board, Bridge or Mariner's Committee know. Mariner's Society Recognition Levels A Mariner's Society recognition plaque in the lobby hallway honors the cumulative contributions Members have made. • Bronze $ 2,500-$4,000 $40,000-$50,000 $$$ to be determined

The Burgee Tiles in the Dockside Lounge Voting Members, do you have your personalized burgee displayed in the Dockside Lounge? If you don’t it is not too late to design one! Your Burgee tile is meant to be a replica of your private burgee. ART SELLERS located at 812 E Elkcam Circle 239-389-5269 can make one for you! They are in the same building as the Sand Bar, just at the opposite end. Go visit them to have your burgee created and displayed proudly in your Dockside Lounge! Have you noticed the Burgees hanging in the Burgee Bar? A private burgee, or owner's signal, is a way of expressing your own vision of the pleasure of sailing, and pride in your boat. The tradition of a unique pennant flown from the masthead goes back hundreds of years. The word "burgee" usually refers to a yacht club flag, but modern yachtsmen often use the term for any private flag. You can choose to make your own flag or hire someone to do the sewing. MIYC Mini Reef Program Helps Clean Our Canals We all love our Island Paradise and the beautiful waters we boat on. Doing what we can to keep our waters clean is a priority at Marco Island Yacht Club. That’s why we are promoting Ocean Habitats’ “Mini Reefs” to Members to be installed under your docks. We have three under our MIYC docks and dozens of Members are installing them, too. . Each reef establishes an ecosystem of aquatic life under the docks which mimics the environment normally found in the prop root system of mangrove trees. Once established, one reef can clean 30,000 gallons of water a day. Left: Carri and John Kendall with David Wolff. strengthen your muscles and you can add resistance devices to burn more calories!
