It’s spring and a perfect time to introduce our newest entry into our Library of Things – the Seed Library! What is a Seed Library, you ask? It’s exactly what it sounds like. A collection of seeds that we “loan” to you. Although loaning in this case is more of a long-term proposition! The benefits of a Seed Library are many: it is a way to have fun, build community with fellow gardeners, and support people who are new to the world of gardening. Seed Libraries also preserve rare, open-pollinated or heirloom seeds and encourage gardeners to save quality seeds that are suitable for your local growing area. There’s no membership fee and you don’t even have to have a library card to get seeds. Fill out a request form on the library’s webpage and staff will let you know when your seeds are ready. You can have up to five seed packets a month. Available seeds will be different every month depending on the growing season. If you have any seeds you would like to share, please bring them to either branch of the library. Our Seed Library was started with a generous donation from Healing Waters. We appreciate all their help sorting the hundreds of seed packets! Fill out your Seed Library Membership form here: https://bit.ly/SCLSeedLibrary.

Sincerely, Patty Hector

A sneak peek at the Gann Museum’s Royal Theatre exhibit History of the Royal: The Royal Theatre was originally built in 1920 as the IMP (Independent Motion Pictures) and remodeled and enlarged in 1948-49. The Royal Theatre’s most notable features – the neon-trimmed marquee and the vertical Royal sign – came from the theater in Little Rock that was remodeled as the Center Theater (which is no longer standing). The Royal operated as a movie theater for many years under the ownership of three generations of the Kauffman family. It was sold to Jerry Van Dyke in the early 1990s. Van Dyke, possibly best known as Luther on the TV show “Coach,” ran movies, as well as talent shows and events in the building. During that time, he had a theater troupe. Another community theatre organization had been formed in 1994: Central Arkansas Community Players (founders: Bob Carson, Gayla McCoy, Ray Baxter, and Fred Wingfield). When Jerry Van Dyke moved away at the end of 2000, he left the building to CACP. CACP renamed itself the Royal Players, Inc. It has been performing in the Royal ever since. In 2002, a youth division was created by Tucker Steinmetz, Jeremy Rick- etson, John Thompson, and Daphne Shoppach. The Young Players group has grown from about twelve students to well over 100. It is presently divided into three age groups and offers workshops and performances. The building was placed on the National Register in 2003 and is an integral part of the Benton historic district as well. There are plans to restore the outside and revitalize the inside of the building. The Royal Players would like to keep the art deco style, while updating the stage, electrical, sound, and other production essentials. - theroyaltheatre.org

Interview with the Director

What made you want to feature the Royal Theatre? While placing some of the museum’s collection in our offsite storage, I saw an antique projector -- Simplex Model E-7 -- which dates back to the 1930’s-1940’s era, and I knew I needed to do an exhibit on the history of our local theatre. The Royal Theatre has had to go dark since COVID-19 began and is really in need of community support. What better way to explain the importance of the Royal than by sharing its story? What has been your favorite discovery in researching the Royal Theatre’s history?

Lindsay Jordan , Executive Director

My favorite discovery while researching the Royal was how the name changed from IMP to Royal during the remodel in 1948-1949. The architect working on the building had a neon sign from a theatre in Little Rock (the Central) and used it just because they had it laying around. The theatre’s name changed from IMP to Royal all because of equipment they had on hand.

What is your favorite part of the exhibit? My favorite part of the Royal Theatre exhibit is a photo of my great-grandmother, Nell Johnson, working the box office of the IMP Theatre in 1947. The museum also has a copy of payroll records with all former employee’s information, including hers. She started in 1947 and quit in 1959 to help my grandmother with her newborn twins--my dad and uncle. Tell us a bit about the process you go through in creating a new exhibit at the Gann. When creating a new exhibit, after the board and I have chosen the subject, the process begins with figuring out what pieces in our collection could be used and what we would need from others. The Kauffman family, who owned and operated the theatre for 74 years, have loaned many interesting items for this exhibit as well as the Royal Players who currently use and own the building. Once I have all the pieces of the puzzle (exhibit), research begins by contacting the Saline County Library, Saline County History and Heritage Society, the Courier, and combing through our records for all information on the chosen subject. Finally, my favorite part of creating a new exhibit is the actual “creating” where I get to put all the pieces in place to form a timeline of the subject: it’s beginning, middle, and end. Once everything has been carefully displayed, I begin writing interpretation for each phase of the exhibit and any crucial tidbits that viewers might be interested in. The end result never ceases to amaze me.
