It’s time for the library’s annual genealogy conference. This year, as last, it will be virtual because of Covid-19. We have a great speaker lined up. Connie Knox is a professional genealogist and the owner of Genealogy TV on YouTube. She’ll be sharing her tips and tricks on how to use DNA in genealogy research, how to organize your research and how to use the cluster genealogy strategy. We’ll have her videos online for 60 days for you to watch, and we’ll also have her for a live Q&A on March 23rd at 3:00 p.m. I hope you’ll join us! I also hope you’ll join us for our annual Bookin’ It 5K Run in April—again, a virtual event. Complete your 5K while maintaining social distancing by running at your own pace, on your own time and at your own location! Run, walk, bike or count all those steps you take while mowing your yard! Registration is $15 and ends April 10th The money raised goes towards keeping the library fine free this year.

Sincerely, Patty Hector

Virtual Genealogy Conference: Meet the Host Connie Knox is a professional Genealogist with over 40 years of experience. As the founder of Genealogy TV, she has entensive experience in all aspects of television broadcasting, video production, and management. To get to know our 2021 host, we asked her a few questions about her background and topics for this years’ conference. How did you get into Genealogy? When I was a teenager, my grandmother started telling me stories about her Danish parents coming across the country in a covered wagon. I was hooked right then and there.

What has been your favorite part of founding Genealogy TV? Oh, the community. It has been a real pleasure meeting so many family historians and communicating with them through the comments. I love creating videos and I have a lifelong love of Genealogy. What could be better?

Do you have any especially interesting stories regarding your experience with Genealogy TV? I do like finding missing parents using DNA and traditional Genealogy. My own mother was adopted, so I found her biological family before DNA was invented using traditional research. I have also solved several mysteries that turned out to be murders through newspaper research. Never underestimate newspapers; they are some of the best sources of information.

others who have interacted with our ancestors. Knowing those relationships helps us verify records and other evidence that (on its own) might not confirm the person in the record is your ancestor. Knowing other people, neighbors, witnesses, friends, etc. of our ancestors helps us to confirm what we are looking at is in fact our ancestor and not another person with their same name. What can an attendee of the upcoming virtual conference expect to gain from the seminar? I think we have a healthy mix of how to get and stay organized, some excellent research strategies using Cluster Research, and how to use DNA to help find your ancestors. I think there is a lot to learn here. These are the three pillars that will really help family historians expand their trees.

When it comes to research, what would you say is the most important factor for success? Focus on one research question at a time. It is easy to run down rabbit holes, chasing hints. The key is to create one research question, from that a research plan, do “reasonably exhaustive research,” resolve the conflicts, and write a conclusion. These are the Genealogical Proof Standards as published by the Board for Certification of Genealogists. The short answer is to focus on one problem/ancestor at a time. Why is it important (or helpful) for those interested in Genealogy to practice Cluster Genealogy? Especially for those who are stuck and have hit that Genealogical brick wall, doing Cluster Genealogy (aka F.A.N. Club research) is vital to understanding not only family relationships, but

The Genealogy Conference begins streaming on March 15 th and goes through May 6 th for you to view at your leisure. You can find the links to videos and worksheets on the library calendar. The topics are: DNA Cousin Match Strategies • What is a Centimorgan? How DNA Painter’s Shared Tool Can Help Genealogy Research • Solve Family History Mysteries with DNA Strategies the Pros Use • Ancestry.com ThruLines Explained DNA Strategies Next Level • AncestryDNA Shared Matches to Solve Genealogy Research • AncestryDNA Cousin Matches: Next Times Organizing Your Records • “Kick Start Guide” Learn Genealogy Research (How to Research Your Family Tree) • “Good Filling from the Start” • Research Notes • How to Create a Genealogy Notes Template in MS Word • How to use TurboScan for Genealogy Cluster Genealogy aka The FAN Club • • How to Use Cluster Genealogy aka FAN Club Research • What is FAN Club Research for Genealogy and Family History? • How to Attach Friends, Associates, and Neighbors to Your Ancestor on Ancestry.com • #1 Way to Break Down Brick Walls
