SALINE COUNTY LIBRARY EXPERIENCES MAY 2021

Let It Grow! A little library patron keeps her plant, Apple, company while it soaks up the sun. She adopted this plant through our Adopt-A-Plant program last year and you can too starting May 1st! More details can be found on page 7.

National Pet Month AND National Picture Book Day? We have suggestions! Learn why Summer Reading is so important and when you can register! Full list of virtual events and the calendar for May! End-of-year exams are coming up and we have FREE resources to help you!

M-Th 9:00 AM - 6:30 PM, F-Sa 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM NEW HOURS STARTING MAY 3!

Both branches of the Saline County Library will open fully on May 3rd! We will still be recommending masks and will not be holding in-person programming for the time-being. *You can still use Curbside Click & Go. More information on page 2.

During the pandemic, we cut our hours because everything was shut down. Now that people are getting vaccinated, we are opening up again and want to try out some new hours that we hope will be more convenient, especially for our commuters who are trying to get by the library after work. In the past, our evening hours weren’t utilized and people stopped coming in by 6:30 PM. On Fridays and Saturdays, the same thing happened. So after looking at past usage patterns, commuting patterns, and demographics, we believe we have come up with a compromise that will be convenient for both our community and our staff. We are so excited to announce that the library will be reopening without browsing appointments on May 3rd and we will have new hours for both branches! New hours are as follows: 9:00 AM - 6:30 PM Monday-Thursday 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Friday and Saturday And while I’m talking about convenience, let’s talk about Curbside Click & Go. We want to keep our curbside delivery of holds post-pandemic and we want to make it a real curbside service. We are changing our app to ask for the make, model, and color of your car and when you pull into our parking spaces labeled “Click & Go,” we will bring your items out to your car. This will be great for people who have mobility issues and for those with babies and car seats or anyone who just doesn’t want to go in the building! Let us come to you.

Sincerely, Patty Hector

May is National Pet Month, and National Picture Book Week is May 3-9th! Check these books out using our app Mid-Ark Regional Library System: http://bit.ly/MidArkApp.

FOSTERS A LOVE OF READING Studies show that 92% of children are more likely to finish a book that they pick out on their own. Reading in general ...

PROVIDES HANDS-ON EDUCATION Reading opens up new worlds, builds confidence, expands language, and helps speech and language awareness.

INCREASES EMPATHY According to a study published in 2013, people who consume literary fiction have an easier time sensing and relating to emotions in other people.

Summer Reading isn’t just about reading! You can participate by attending virtual programs and completing activities! Summer Reading is for everyone!

ALLEVIATES STRESS

A 2009 study found that reading for just 30 minutes has similar stress-reducing effects to doing 30 minutes of yoga.

STIMULATES YOUR BRAIN Why is reading important? As the 17th century English writer Joseph Addison once wrote, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”

Reading during the summer... > Encourages adults to find time to relax during the hectic summer

Children who read during the summer perform 35-40% better on reading tests. On the other hand, studies show that children who don’t read during the summer fall an average of two months behind.

> Improves reading skills > Increases desire to read > Neutralizes summer learning loss > Improves memory skills > Fosters community with like-ages

Saline County Library Summer Reading pre-registration starts June 1st! Summer Reading 2021 will be virtual on Beanstack starting June 7th. Logging forms will be available for download or pick-up. As you read books and complete activities, you’ll earn badges! As always, you’ll also be able to earn prizes for reaching reading goals!
