As I write this, the COVID-19 virus is once again surging and our hospitals are full. The fall we had planned full of in-person programs and outreach in the community has been scrapped and replaced with virtual or outdoor, socially-distanced alternatives. Despite the virus, plenty of people have returned to using the library in-person. However, we still do offer our services designed to keep you safe: Curbside Click & Go, mailing materials (limited to 4 items), Pocket Librarian to help pick materials for you if you can’t browse, and all our digital resources available 24/7 via internet. We do have a few things to look forward to. We will be breaking ground this month on our Nature Play Space. We’re using grant funds and raising funds from the community to turn the unused space outside of the storytime room into an outdoor learning center for kids. We’re also working on a new website that will be easier to use and accessible to everyone. You’ll hear more on that as we get further along the design phase. We’re always looking for new ideas on how to serve the community better. If you think of something, let us know.

Sincerely, Patty Hector

Meet Dr. Jamie Irwin, D.O.

Library Applications. While our policy is that children can’t get a library card until they turn five, their parents sure can! With the library card, parents will be made aware of all of the things the Saline County Library and our community have to offer them. Being a new parent is hard, and we want parents to know that they have support from us . What made you choose Pediatric Medicine? I am the oldest sibling and have always been comfortable with young children. When I started medical school, I was drawn to working with children as they were so much more fun to be around. I also enjoyed learning about diseases that primarily affected children. What do you like most about being a pediatric doctor? I love getting to know families. I love starting out with a patient in the newborn nursery and seeing them grow up. I often feel like a member of the family. What do you hope to accomplish in your partnership with the Saline

“The Newborn Card Project will benefit our community and new families by making parents aware of the wide range of educational programs and services that are free to them through the library. I would love to see a greater number of parents take advantage of these programs.” - Dr. Jamie Irwin , D.O. County Library? Pediatricians have long recognized the importance of reading to children early and often. We recognize that literacy in the home greatly improves the potential trajectory of a child’s life, academically and professionally. We also recognize the bonding that occurs between parent and child when a parent reads to their young child. It teaches children to love the experience of reading. I hope to help improve the literacy level in our community by also making tools to increase their own levels of literacy available to parents.

Dr. Jamie Irwin is a Pediatric Doctor at the new Saline Pediatrics Associates’ Building. She’s working closely with us to develop the Newborn Card Project, and we had the pleasure of sitting down to speak with her. How long have you been in Pediatric Medicine? This is my 13th year. I completed my residency in pediatrics at UAMS/ Children’s Hospital in 2008.

NEWBORN CARD PROJECT

In partnership with Saline Memorial, we are so excited to announce our Newborn Card Project. New mothers at Saline Memorial will now be given Saline County

what I’m used to. Every position I’ve had in the library until now has been in youth services in one way or another, so taking on the role of Public Services Manager will be an exciting new challenge! Hopefully, no one will mind how ridiculous I tend to be. I can’t help it! How can your previous position(s) help you to make the most of this new one? The last time I worked here at Saline County Library, I was Youth Services Manager and did my best to show my staff that I valued them. I tried to help them flourish and to teach them to work together as a team, to depend on and support each other. Now, I want to do it all over again! I hope to help my staff grow to be their very best and to be so

successful and confident that they don’t even need me! I’ll be here to fight their battles if they have any and to support them in any way that I can. What book are you reading right now? I’m currently reading The River Has Teeth by Erica Waters and The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead. I can almost guarantee that I’ll be reading something different every time you see me. Come and ask me, or tell me what you’re reading!

Amanda was previously the Youth Services manager from 2016-2018. She earned her Masters in Library Science from Texas Women’s University in 2011. Since she’s been gone, she has produced and narrated audiobooks and created and hosts her own podcast, Fictional Hangover. We are so

excited to have her back! What are you most looking

forward to in your new position? I’m looking forward to being in the library again! I’m also excited to begin a journey that’s different than

threat. the ground running in their new positions. What are you most looking forward to in your new position?

County Library, I’ve worked in almost every department. I feel that that allows me to have a holistic view of the operations of the library and will allow me to have a broader range of experiences to draw from for whatever may arise within my new position. What book are you reading right now? A Good Day for Chardonnay, the second book in the Sunshine Vicram series by Darynda Jones.

Mystery, romance, humor, it’s a great series! I just finished Murder on Cold Street, the most recent book in the Lady Sherlock series, by Sherry Thomas. It’s such a good series! It’s a twist on the Sherlock Holmes legacy as it reimagines Sherlock as a woman, Charlotte Holmes. It’s a historical mystery, romance, humor series and just all around a good time!

I’m looking forward to being able to help in all areas of the library instead of focusing on just one department. I’m excited for the opportunity to assist with the new Nature Play Space that Sarah Beth Lesko has worked so hard to launch. How can your previous position(s) help you to make the most of this new one? Throughout my career at the Saline

rebecca kidder branch manager

What do you hope to accomplish in your new position? I hope to serve the community of Bryant through my new position. I would love to host more programs and events at Bryant. Increasing the awareness of the library is extremely important. How can your previous position(s) help you to make the most of this new one? Being the Public Services Manager helped me see what patrons want and need with our library. I plan to

use those wants and needs when making decisions in my new role. What fictional character do you feel you’re most like? What traits do you share with them? Pam Beesley from The Office. Over time, we’ve both come out of our shell and grown. Like Pam, I am dedicated, reliable, and enjoy the little things in life. I also have an amazing soulmate - Ashton. However, Pam is a way better artist than me! In the words of Pam, “Be strong. Trust yourself. Love yourself.”

Rebecca, formerly the Public Services Manager at the Benton branch, has been in libraries for several years, serving as Interim Director and Assistant Librarian at College of the Ouachitas. She earned her Masters in Library Science from the University of North Texas.

Staff Highlight Alan Alan is the new Community Librarian at the Saline County Library! Here are a few fun facts about him: If you could choose one superpower, what would it be? Disapparation. I would be in New Zealand RIGHT NOW. What is the nerdiest thing you do in your spare time? I really, really like homework. I might keep going to school just because I know how much I will miss it. What ’s the strangest talent you have? I can cup my hands, clap them in front of my mouth, and make myself into a musical instrument with alarming tonal accuracy. Are you a cat or dog person (or other)? I live with five ginger cats who allow me to reside here so long as I keep them fed, watered, and mildly entertained. Not surprisingly, they do not like dogs.

We get by with a little help from our friends! The Used Book Store is back open! Come and browse at the Benton branch any time we’re open. To raise money for the Nature Play Space, the Friends will be selling Nature Gift Bags for $15. These bags will include two books and two nature crafts. These will go on sale September 1st and the last day to purchase is September 10th. Nature Gift Bags
