Chiro1Source - July 2021

This Is How I’m Using Them! I HAVE 12,927 DAYS LEFT TO LIVE

This April, I went to a mastermind talk for business owners in Las Vegas that changed the way I think about Chiro1Source, probably forever. I still

erases the old number and writes the new, smaller one in its place. He said watching his life tick down reminds him of what’s important. He needs that reminder after watching his uncle — a hardworking business owner — overwork himself all his life, only to be diagnosed with throat cancer and die at 62, right at the start of his retirement. “Seeing this number reminds me that when I get to my last moment on this Earth, I’m not going to think, ‘Could I have made a little more money?’ I’m going to wish I had a little more time,” the speaker said. Looking down at my number, I started to think about all of the things I wanted to accomplish in my life and with my business. The exercise lit a fire under me. I decided it was time to stop putting off things I’d been meaning to do and start living. One thing I’d back-burnered was the idea of using Chiro1Source as a force for good. I’ve always wanted to give back more to the chiropractic community and other causes, but I hadn’t decided when, where, or how much. After that mastermind, I made it happen. This April, Chiro1Source donated $5,000 to ChiroCongress, a group that’s strategically planning the future of chiropractic. I also implemented a new system at the office. Every time we meet a sales goal, one of the people on our team chooses a charity, and we make a donation. Within weeks, we’d given to a local food bank, an orphanage, and the American Heart Association. It has been awesome to see my team get so excited about making a difference! That mastermind made me realize that when I’m on my deathbed, what will matter most to me is how many people I helped along the way. As Winston Churchill once said, “We

can’t get it out of my head. The mindmelt started when one of the speakers told us to take out a piece of paper. The men in the room were supposed to write 78 at the top, while the women wrote 82. Then, he told us to subtract our current age from that number. At this point, I could tell things were headed in a math-like direction, so I pulled out my smartphone calculator. The speaker had us multiply the number we’d gotten by 365.

“That’s the number of days you still have left on Earth,” he said. “But wait, there’s more.”

I stared at the number, feeling a little pleased (I’m young, after all!) and a little freaked out. Then, things got really interesting. The speaker told us to multiply our “days left on Earth” by .67, since we spend 33% of our time sleeping. My number dropped by a third. The figure I had left was the real number of waking days I had here on planet Earth.

My number was 12,927. In a weird way, I was holding the rest of my life in my hands.

make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” I’m looking forward to giving more!

While I tried to process my number, the speaker told us he keeps his number front and center in his life all the time. He has it pinned to a board in his office and written on a note stuck to his bathroom mirror. Every morning, he

Stay Cool This Summer When thinking about extreme and deadly weather, most people conjure up images of massive tornadoes in the Midwest or hurricanes and flooding in the Southeast. But you might be surprised to learn that the Educate Yourself on Heat-Related Illnesses

deadliest extreme weather event is excessive heat. In fact, according to a study from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), heat causes more deaths each year than floods, lightning, tornadoes, and hurricanes combined. Since 2020 was the second warmest year on record and all the other years in the top 10 have occurred since 2005, it’s time to wise up about heat-related illnesses.

After weeks of COVID-19 delays, the materials for our warehouse expansion are finally here! Josh first announced this exciting project in our February newsletter, but because of the pandemic and the Suez Canal disaster, it was tough to find materials. The expansion of our warehouse from 5,400 square feet to 10,800 square feet was pushed back several months. Now, though, our contractors have finally hunted down the steel, metal siding, and roofing we need! Our new warehouse should be up and running by early August. The project has been an adventure already. Because of the heavy clay soil we have here in North Carolina, the developers had to use a sapphire blade to break ground. We’re

HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES AND RISK FACTORS According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heat-related illnesses are caused by “exposure to extreme heat where the body becomes unable to properly cool, resulting in a rapid rise in body temperature.” There are several kinds of heat-related illnesses. The least severe are heat rashes, sunburn, and heat cramps, and the most serious are heat exhaustion and heat stroke. While anyone can experience these illnesses if they overexert themselves in hot weather, some groups are more at risk than others, including: • Children under the age of 4 and adults over the age of 65 • People with preexisting medical conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease • People who are overweight • People taking certain kinds of medication • Individuals who are intoxicated or drink excessively SYMPTOMS TO WATCH OUT FOR Both heat exhaustion and heat stroke have many of the same symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, and passing out. But other symptoms help differentiate the two. Heat stroke victims will have hot, red skin that may be dry or damp, and they’ll likely have a fast, strong pulse. By contrast, victims of heat exhaustion will have cold, pale, and clammy skin and a fast but weak pulse.

excited about our new U-shaped drive, which will make it easy for 18-wheelers to pick up and drop off supplies, and I can’t wait to see the walls of the warehouse go up.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency requiring professional medical attention immediately. You should also seek medical help for anyone exhibiting the above symptoms who is also throwing up or whose symptoms are getting worse or last longer than one hour. For a complete list of symptoms and treatment for all heat-related illnesses, visit CDC.gov/disasters/extremeheat/warning.html . Stay cool this summer and prevent heat-related illnesses by seeking shade or staying indoors on hot days, avoiding exerting yourself in the heat, and drinking plenty of water!

Transition Your Patients to At-Home

STRUCTION IS LLY UNDERWAY! Arrived for Our New Warehouse

Workouts With Ease With the Help of the Theraband CLX!

As a chiropractor, you know that one of the toughest things about the job is getting your patients to follow through with their at-home exercises. They forget to do them, put them on the back burner, or get confused about what they’re supposed to do and how. This stumbling block can really slow down recovery. Fortunately, we have a solution for you: Performance Health’s Theraband CLX. The Theraband CLX is a versatile, 5-foot, latex-free resistance band that features consecutive loops every 8 inches. The loops are easy to open and anchor on a wrist, foot, or knee, allowing the band to be used hands-free and helping patients combine upper and lower exercise routines. Theraband also offers bands at seven levels of resistance in a patented progressive system. This makes the Theraband CLX a great option for older or recovering patients without much grip strength, athletes in training, and the patient population overall.

As you’ve probably noticed, supply chains around the country are a mess right now. There are empty aisles in the grocery stores, and near us in Greenville, our local sporting goods shop was down to just two bikes on a rack of 100. There has been a similar run on chiropractic supplies, but once our warehouse is ready, we’ll be able to double our inventory and have more items in stock for you! That will decrease shortages and cut down shipping time so that stocking up your clinic is easier than ever. Check out these photos of the warehouse in progress and keep an eye on this newsletter to see the finished product!

The Theraband CLX makes the transition from in-clinic workouts to at-home exercises easy, stress-free, and profitable for you.

“The Theraband CLX System is a wall unit that chiropractors can utilize to instruct patients in the office,” explains Dana Mackison, the director of chiropractic education for Performance Health. “Then, chiropractors can send them home with a CLX band for home use and also add in a door anchor to make [the band] easier and safer for them to use at home.” Teaching a patient to use the Theraband in the office will maximize your billable hours with specific current procedural terminology (CPT) exercise codes, and sending them home with identical equipment will increase compliance. The door anchor is one of a suite of accessories patients can use to level up the Theraband CLX, including handles and assistant attachments, although they are not strictly necessary for the versatile looped design. Theraband also offers an app that will guide patients through home workouts.

HAVE A LAUGH!

“Patients can download the app on their phones, and it’s really an easy way to instruct them,” Mackison says. “They can use it to look back and follow up on one, two, or three exercises the chiropractor might have prescribed for them to do at home.”

How a Joke Became a Multibillion-Dollar Currency Market 4

Would you create an actual cryptocurrency to make fun of other cryptocurrencies? That’s exactly what Jackson Palmer and Billy Markus did, and it’s paid off with an over $70 billion currency market. Now, it’s the fourth-largest cryptocurrency in the world. Dogecoin (symbol: Ð) is a cryptocurrency that provides a payment system (like Bitcoin, another digital currency) that is instant, fun, and free from traditional banking fees. Its playful name and Shiba Inu dog mascot caused the currency to start as a meme, but as people began to actually purchase it, it became worth more and more. Before Dogecoin, Palmer was a product manager at Adobe Inc.’s office in Sydney, Australia. As a “skeptic-analytic” observer of crypto, he joked on Twitter about creating Dogecoin as a way of satirizing the hype for cryptocurrencies. Surprisingly, people were totally on board. So, he bought the domain name Dogecoin.com. The Origins of Dogecoin How a Joke Became a Multibillion-Dollar Currency Market

project and decided to jump on the Dogecoin buzz. He asked Palmer’s permission to build the software to create an actual Dogecoin.

Most cryptocurrencies are fairly serious and sterile in presentation, but Dogecoin was always different. Palmer and Markus decided to market Dogecoin as the “fun” version of Bitcoin. Since Bitcoin had a limited supply while Dogecoin had an unlimited supply, Dogecoin was also faster and more consumer-friendly for new crypto investors. In 2015, Palmer made his departure from Dogecoin, citing the currency’s “toxic community” as a main reason why he left. Dogecoin also had its financial struggles during the 2018 cryptocurrency crash, but today, it’s grown stronger than ever. As of early May 2021, Dogecoin’s price is up more than 13,000% for the year. Even though Dogecoin’s origins are humorous, Palmer and Markus’ business decisions were no joke. If you decide to purchase Dogecoin yourself, whether as a joke or for investing, please do your due diligence to understand the risks of cryptocurrency.

That’s when Markus, a software developer at IBM, contacted Palmer. He wanted to create a digital currency but had trouble promoting his
