fathers and wives without husbands. She’d lost her own father some years before and knew how heartbreaking it was to lose such a guiding force from your life. Ms. Clayton was inspired to pay tribute to the fathers lost in the mining accident. She shared her idea with the local church pastor, and he agreed that the fathers should be given proper recognition. So, on July 5 — a date chosen because it was Clayton’s father’s birthday — of 1908, the town of Fairmont celebrated the first Father’s Day to honor all the lost fathers and give families a chance to mourn. Despite this early beginning, the holiday wouldn’t catch on in the rest of the nation for many years. In 1920, Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane,Washington, brought up the idea of honoring fathers with a day of celebration. People began to pick up on the idea, though it still didn’t become a national holiday until 1972, when Richard Nixon declared it so. Thanks to the sacrifices of many men and some caring women, we now have a day dedicated to our fathers. They are the people we turn to for advice and guidance — our role models throughout our lives.

Before learning about the Monongah Mine incident, I didn’t know the true history of Father’s Day. I, like some of you, thought it was either created so that fathers wouldn’t feel left out after the family celebrated Mother’s Day a month prior, or another invention of greeting card companies. Little did I know that the history of the small town of Fairmont,West Virginia, held the answer. Every summer in Fairmont, history is brought to life when actors pay tribute to the day in 1907 when a nearby mining accident took the lives of over 360 men. Many were Italian migrants, and many were also fathers.“Vibrations were felt in three or four towns,” describe the re-enactors of the incident. It was one of the deadliest mining accidents in U.S. history. After the mine exploded, thousands of children in the Fairmont area were left without fathers. A local resident, Grace Golden Clayton, couldn’t bear to think of all these children without

How Your Asking Price Af f e c t s Your Se l l i ng Pr i c e

Andy Says...

2. Somewhat Overpriced: About 3/4 of the homes on the market are overpriced by 5–10 percent. These homes will also sit on the market longer than you want. You may really believe in your heart that your home is worth this much despite what the market has indicated, or you’ve left some room for negotiating. Either way, this strategy will cost you both in terms of time on the market and ultimate price received. 3. Priced Correctly at Market Value: Some sellers understand that real estate is part of the capitalistic system of supply and demand and will carefully and realistically price their homes based on a thorough analysis. These competitively priced homes sell within a reasonable time frame and for very close to the asking price. 4. Priced Below the Fair Market Value: These homes attract multiple offers and sell fast — usually in a few days — at, o r above , the asking price. Be cautious, however — you want to ensure that the agent suggesting this method is doing so with only your best interest in mind.

When you decide to sell your home, setting your asking price is one of the most important decisions you will ever make.

Your asking price is often your home’s “first impression,” and if you want to collect the most money you can from your home’s sale, it is imperative that you make a good first impression. CAUTION: It is unwise to assume that a higher asking price will net you a higher selling price. In fact, this equation often works in reverse.

Here are the typical ways homes are priced:

1. Clearly Overpriced: Some agents, to win your business, inflate the value of your home by 10-20 percent over the true market value. This is not in your best interest, because in most cases, the market won’t be fooled. As a result, your home could languish on the market for months and be negatively labeled by prospects as “troubled.”

Millennial Talk With Danielle DiMarco, College Student and ‘2 Cents’ Columnist

You may remember playing your rock n’ roll music too loud in your room as a teenager and hearing your parents yell at you to “turn that racket down.”Well, now, as you have grown and the years have progressed, a new music generation has erupted. Maybe you’re curious as to what the younger generation is listening to.Will it scare you? Let’s see … The most popular songs loved by millennials are in the genres of hip-hop, rap, pop, and electronic. To keep you generally informed about what’s happening in this burgeoning music scene, I’ve listed three top artists.

FYI — Even though these are three of the most popular artists, I have a different taste in music. My favorites are Grimes, HOMESHAKE, and Lana Del Rey.You can give them a listen, too!

POST MALONE He recently had his big break in the music scene for his popular hip-hop and rap songs. He just released his debut album, which has already climbed its way to the No. 1 spot on iTunes. His songs do contain profanity, so if you’re easily offended by certain language, I suggest you avoid his music. CARDI B She is quickly becoming one of the top female rap artists of this generation. ODESZA This is a band unlike any other that you’ve probably listened to. This electronic music band has risen to fame over the past couple of years. Their songs feature popular artists, and they play sold-out DJ shows — they even headlined at this year’s Coachella Music Festival. I know most of you who grew up back in the day aren’t very keen on this type of music, but I think it’s a fact:Y our rock n’ roll “racket” is now “classic.”

own youth and the unjaded bravado that comes with it make him into a character you can relate to.You’ll find yourself concerned for young Toph and empathizing with the challenges and uncertainty Eggers faces. Can you imagine being thrust into adulthood and parenthood when most of your peers are barely graduating from college? Eggers tries to figure out his and Toph’s “new normal.” Their grief rests just below the surface — existing but not overtaking the narrative. Despite its gravity, Eggers’ story doesn’t dwell on what happened to him. This gives a bittersweet but playful tone to his tale.“A HeartbreakingWork of Staggering Genius” is “a psychological

When Dave Eggers was just 21, he lost both his parents within nearly a month of each other. Their deaths left him in the role of guardian to his 8-year-old brother, Toph. His memoir “A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius” chronicles the periods before and several months after the death of Eggers’ parents as he navigates newfound independence and everything — good and bad — that comes with it. As tragic as the circumstances are that warranted it, at times, the memoir manages to be sad, funny, and heartwarming. After packing up and leaving their home in Chicago to start the unexpected next chapter of their lives, Eggers and Toph make their way toward their California dream. As they drive along the dizzying route of Highway 1, they’re mesmerized by Big Sur and the spectacularly blue sky they encounter. In her review of the book, critic Fran Singh calls Eggers’ descriptions in this part of the book “a love letter to California and the Big Sur Coast.”You’ll be swept up in the atmosphere as much as Eggers and Toph are.
