MIYC 2020 Presentat ion and Bless ing of the Fleet

! 2

MIYC Presentation and Blessing of the Fleet

By Roy Hershberger It was another beautiful day for the Marco Island Yacht Club’s annual Blessing of the Fleet held Saturday, Feb. 15. The sky was clear and the winds at about 10-12 mph kept the temperature on the cool side. Commodore Ray Rosenberg got the proceedings underway by introducing the Past Commodores on shore. Those in attendance were Bob Winterhalter, Robert DeFeo, Frank Rinker and M.A. Harlacker; and also those on the water were Jeff Comeaux on board “Lady B”, Lois Dixon on board “Lily”, Dick Irwin on board “Flamingo”, Jim Marr on board “Blue Moon”, and Dean Heard on board “Blue Moon”. The Commodore then introduced the 2020 Bridge Members: Vice Commodore Geoff Walker, Rear Commodore Tom Wentworth, Power Fleet Captain Pete Frazier, Sailing Fleet Captain Dwyn Von Bereghy, Safety and Training Officer Trevor Hayworth, Port Captain Henry Stanley, Fleet Surgeon David Randall, Recording Secretary Shelly Derrough, Chaplin Alan Sandlin, and Quartermaster Lee Dorison. After the Pledge of Allegiance and a very moving rendition of our National Anthem, MIYC Chaplin Alan Sandlin gave an especially appropriate Blessing. A moment of silence to remember those who passed away this last year was followed by Taps then eight strokes of

the bell to signify “Off Watch”. The firing of the cannon then called in the fleet. MIYC Chaplin, Alan Sandlin was on board “Camelot” and anchored just off the Clubhouse. As each boat passed by “Camelot”, the Captains introduced themselves and the Bridge on Shore in full MIYC uniform exchanged salutes with the crews. Nineteen boats led by the “Marco Island Princess”, who re-joined us after a couple of years absence, paraded past “Camelot”, the MIYC Bridge and Past Commodores on shore as the song for each Captain’s military affiliation was played. The colorful proceedings and patriotic music were a moving experience for the people on shore and the crews of the participating vessels. The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Patrol Boat and the Marco Island Police Boating with M.I. Police Chief Tracy Frazzano on board followed the last vessel in, and then a delicious and plentiful Saturday afternoon lunch was served up by Chef Bob and Staff. One hundred-forty people enjoyed the meal and friendship on the Club’s upper deck overlooking the water, listening to the music provided by Steve Reynolds, on what could not have been a more perfect day.

CPR, AED training could save a life! Tuesday, March 3 Please note: My email address was incorrect on the previous eblasts. Contact me on my new email address: [email protected] Sorry about that! Besides being a risky endeavor, boating can add the element of isolation, which can turn small mishaps into big emergencies. This creates a need for us, as boaters, to be self-supportive and prepared to deal with any medical emergency that could occur when we are on the water. With that as an objective, we have arranged another CPR, AED (defibrillator) and First Aid training course with Marco Island Fire-Rescue to be held at the Fire House on San Marco, Tuesday March 3, 09:00 – 12:00. Space is limited so please let me know as soon as possible if you would like to attend. There is no cost for the training (a $100 value) and you will receive an America Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Certificate upon completion. Boater's Night Wednesday, March 4th Cocktails at 6, Dinner and Program at 7

Get ready for a Boaters’ Night that is a feast for the senses! Award-winning naturalist and year-round Marco Island resident presents a side of our island home that Snowbirds (and even residents) rarely see! Gentle Members,

Charlette Roman Florida Master Naturalist

As we look at Marco Island every day, on the way to or from the Club or the shops, the usual sights are familiar: Condo towers on the beach, the jumbo hotels, houses lining every canal…all the civilized trappings of the modern world. But what if you could go back in time, take the WayBack Machine to a quieter era, a time when birds and animals, an amazing array of them, reigned unchallenged by any human, except maybe a few Calusa fishermen. What wonders would delight the eye, what amazements would appear? This Boaters’ Night, you can see the secret world of Marco Island for yourself…not just things of the past, but things that exist here and now, beside us today, but hidden to all but the keenest observer. Our speaker has been studying Marco Island through her talented lens ever since she moved here 18 years ago, and she will share some of the most unforgettable scenes and moments she has captured with you in a truly unique and absorbing presentation. She’ll make stops at locations such as the ABC Islands, Jolley Bridge sandbar, Kice Island, Sand Dollar Spit and Tigertail Lagoon in order to view the varied natural landscapes that makes our area so unique and to learn about a few of the incredible creatures that have made and still make this habitat their home. Charlette Roman is our presenter, a certified Florida Master Naturalist , recipient of the Collier County Audubon Fellowship, former member of the Collier County Planning Commission, current Marco Island City Councilwoman, member of the Board of Governors of the South Florida Water Management District, and Chair of the Big Cypress Basin Board. She has done all of this in retirement, after a 26-year career in the US Army, enlisting as a private and departing as a full Colonel. This very special presentation is paired with a special menu created by Chef Bob to include some of Marco Island’s favorite dishes. Make your reservations now for this one-of-a-kind window into living with nature’s magic here on Marco Island! Call the Club for Dinner Reservations - 239-394-0199 Tom Wentworth, Rear Commodore

With great sadness we share the news that Ray Yerich passed away on Monday, February 17. Known around the Club as "Captain Ray," he was beloved by many. A veteran of the Korean War, he would amaze Members with his moving, dramatic recitations of "In Flanders Fields" and other patriotic poems on Veteran's Day and other occasions. He will be missed. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. Yerich Obituary

February Day Cruise to the Naples Hyatt

Welcomed aboard on February 10th, 2020 were 26 MIYC Members for a lovely Day Cruise to the Hyatt in Naples! ♥ Blue Moon (Jim Marr) and Pelican (Pete Frazier) arrived at the NS&YC and the Crew walked over to the Hyatt for an delightful lunch. The boats traveled up to Naples on the outside and came back on the ICW inside after lunch to maximize our views. On the way up through the pass we viewed the mansions, mega yachts, and sailboats and were treated to a tour of Port Royal. Coming down the ICW we had special views of the Osprey nests and other bird life and were able to enjoy a playdate with our special dolphin friends. Trips like this epitomize what the MIYC is all about.... great camaraderie, new friends, great food, and the opportunity to share our love of boating!

The theatre group enjoyed a lovely dinner at a unique Naples restaurant, the Veranda at Hotel Escalante prior to the season ticket event - Hello Dolly . Kudos to Diana Winterhalter who organized these culinary adventures prior to live theatre at Artis Naples. The March performance is Come From Away. Share enables you to participate in the continued growth and success of the Club. Members holding an Equity Share in MIYC also receive other benefits. You receive a slightly higher discount on Food & Beverage a n d S h i p ’ s S t o r e purchases at the Club. We allocate a higher portion of dues for holders of Equity Shares to the capital fund, thereby lowering the amount

Equity Upgrades Available! Nearly 20 years ago, 200 individuals each invested $25,000 to buy the Marco Island Yacht & Sailing Club and establish the Marco Island Yacht Club. Each individual’s investment represented an Equity Share worth 0.5% (or 1/200 th ) of the Club’s assets. Through the past 20 years, some members held on to their Equity Shares and some Equity Shares have changed hands . Today, Equity Shares are held by active members as well as resigned members. And, about 25% of the Equity Shares are owned by the Club. Our bylaws govern how we repurchase Equity Shares. There have been a significant number of Equity Shares change hands in the last five years. The Board of Directors regularly reviews the market price of an Equity Share and updates the value of the share based on market conditions and the Club’s asset value. For much of our history, the value of an Equity Share declined, reaching a level of $5000 in 2012. Since that time, and as our Club’s financial position has improved, we have been regularly raising the Equity Share value. In 2017, the value was raised to $7,500. And, in 2018, the Board raised the value to $9,000. I am pleased to share with you that the Board of Directors has once again raised the market value of an Equity Share. Effective May 1, 2020, the Market Value of a MIYC Equity Share will be established at $12,000. The May 1 st effective date does present a short window of opportunity for current Members who do not own an Equity Share. If you would like to join those of us who are owners of this Club as an Equity Member, you can acquire an Equity Share at the price of $9,000 until May 1, 2020. I know many of our members have been considering this since the subject was covered in the Membership Column of the January and February Anchor Lines Why become an Equity Member? For one thing, your ownership of an Equity Share of Marco Island Yacht Club demonstrates your commitment to the future of our Club. Your Equity Share represents ownership in a very valuable piece of property on Marco Island. And, as we complete the Riverside Marina Project, we expect to see the value of our Club increase again. (The next all Equity Member Meeting, Happy Hour and Dinner with be on Tuesday, March 31 st .) In addition to the increase in value of the Equity Share , the Board has also authorized the ability for purchasers of an Equity Share to spread their purchase over multiple payments. An individual wishing to purchase an Equity Share can now opt for a one-time payment of $9,000; a payment of $3,000 per month over three months; or a payment of $1,500 per month over six months. MIYC Membership Chair and Board Secretary Vicki Bretthauer will be available at the Dockside Lounge on Saturday, March 7 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm to speak with you and answer any questions you may have about purchasing an Equity Share. P l e a s e s e n d V i c k i a n e m a i l t o [email protected] if you plan to meet with her on Saturday the 7th so she can schedule a time for you. Introducing the state-of-the-art MIYC Riverside Marina Wet Slip Membership

Because market demand for boats over 65 feet has grown substantially over the past 10 years, the inventory of available slips large enough to accommodate them in Naples and south to Marco Island is tight. In addition, and for the same 10-year period, Southwest Florida accounts for a 10% growth in boats 40 to 65 feet. The MIYC Riverside Marina will provide 27 new slips, ranging from 50 to 124 feet. All slips are designed to be a minimum of 24 feet wide.

Wet Slip Memberships Do you know someone who wants to buy a bigger boat, but they don’t know where to keep it? Tell them about our new state-of-the-art Marina! They’ll get a top-of-the-line boat slip and Full Membership in the Club, too! The sales team is ready to answer any questions! Membership sales team: Captain Geoff Fahringer: 239-253-4091 Lee Dorison: 561-756-7375 Ken Gandy: 239-877-3777 Web: www.marcoislandyachtclub.net MIYC Phone: 239-394-0199

Some slips will have lifts, all slips will have water, electricity, pump-out facilities, lighting and security cameras. A full-time Dockmaster will be on hand for any needed assistance, and each Wet Slip Membership includes member- ship as a Full Member in the Yacht Club. Construction is slated to begin in 2020, to be completed in early 2021. Because slips are in high demand, now is the time to take advantage of this one-of-a-kind, turn- key, pre- construction investment opportunity.

Club boating activities thus far this season have been amazing. February was another big month with many new Members joining in events. The Blessing of the Fleet was attended by record numbers with 19 boats and blessings by Chaplain Alan Sandlin. Captain Roy Hershberger and Past Commodore Bob Winterhalter were the organizers-in-chief and did a superb job. The buffet prepared by Chef Bob and served by Pam and Staff was fabulous. We all owe a big thanks to Roy, Bob, Chef Bob, Pam and Staff for the fun and safe boating event and the delicious meal. Two days after the Blessing, our cruising fleet was off to Boca Grande and then South Seas Resort for a total of seven days. The seas were like glass going up and calm coming back, but in between we had some weather. That did not stop the 45+ boat and land cruisers from partying. We played golf, ate, biked, ate, shopped and had side trips to Useppa and ‘Tween Waters Crab Races where we also ate. We did dine at some pretty interesting spots. Cruise Captain Jim Marr with Peggy Frazier and Kelley Wentworth kept us hopping. Thanks to them and all who participated in this annual spectacular event. I can’t wait until 2021 to see what is planned! Now we are in the month of windy March. Much of the cruising fleet will be flying to the Exumas for an eight-day charter cruise with four catamarans and 32 crew members. The two boats from the MIYC fleet who had planned to rendezvous with the cats had to cancel

due to Gulf Stream crossing difficulties (forecasts of 25+ knot winds and 8-foot seas). Other boating activities in March include Boater’s Night March 4, Day Cruise to Paradise Found in Goodland March 9, and the Sunset Cruise March 25. Don’t miss them. See flyers in this Anchor Lines for more information. Last, but certainly not least, your Boating Committee has come up with a new and exciting adventure for 2021.

Enhancements to your Equity Membership

We have some really exciting news for Equity members. First, many of you have asked to have some form of recognition for being an Equity member. Your Membership Committee working with the Board of Directors has subtly redesigned the Equity name badge adding a line showing that you are an Equity Member. If you would like to have your name badge replaced, please send an email to Cynthia Hultquist at [email protected] showing how you would like your name to read on the new badge. You will then exchange your former badge for the new badge. Also, you may remember that the wine bin program was modified so that only Equity members are allowed to have bins on the property. Below are the instructions for the new program. Wine Bin Program The Wine Bin Program is for Equity Members only. The wine is stored in our temperature-controlled cabinets. Red wines are stored at a temperature between 58-62 degrees and white wines are stored at a temperature between 48-52 degrees. An Equity Member can have one free wine bin either red or white that holds two standard 750ml bottles of wine. • Additional wine bins may be rented for one year at $50 per bin. • The corkage fee is $10 per bottle. • You may restock your bin as many times as you want. • Your name will be placed on the bin. • Only authorized staff will be allowed to stock the bins or withdraw the wine when requested. • Members are not allowed to access the wine cabinets. • If you want to use a bottle of wine on a Friday Evening, please order it in advance when you make your reservation so that your server can have it available for you. • Wine Bin Procedures An Equity Member who would like to participate in the wine bin program should e-mail the Front of House Manager at [email protected] with the following information. • Requesting use of your free wine bin please provide your name, member number and whether you would like a red or white wine bin. • If you are renting an additional wine bin, please provide the same information as above. Your account will be charged the appropriate amount. • Your wine bottles must have your name attached. MIYC Fishing Club Thursday, February 26 th 11:30am Throughout the month of February, wind and rough seas

dominated all of the fishing in southwest Florida. This is typical with several cold fronts working their way down from the north bringing excessive wind and rough water. Weather was better at the end of January when six members headed over to Islamorada to fish off-shore for tuna and king

mackerel. Several very large kings were caught and the Fishing Club enjoyed the catch at the February meeting on the Burgee Bar. Chef Bob prepared an excellent presentation. At the meeting, we discussed tarpon

fishing out of Islamorada in April and July. We are also planning a trip to Stuart in September to fish for snook in the St. Lucie river and an international trip to Guatemala in January/February to fish for sailfish and marlin. Earlier in February, we did see one decent day to head offshore.

One boat travelled 45 miles offshore to catch one 18-inch grouper. We marked fish – but they just weren’t biting. The water temperature was 69 … a little cool for pelagic species.

In mid-February, 6 members fished out of Boca Grande on two boats. We did hit a two-day period of decent weather and did catch a variety of fish – spanish mackerel, redfish and snook. The best news is there are currently NO traces of red tide. If this condition holds, the DNA will probably relax the season on most game fish. The Fishing Club will have its next luncheon on Thursday, March 26 at 11:30am on the Burgee Bar. Jeff Comeaux Past Commodore – USCG Captain Equity and Full Members welcome.

Noon Bridge

If you are like me, you remember learning to play bridge in college and then there was the “social” bridge at night or on a lucky day when you could get time off from your busy schedule. Then came an even busier time in my life with work, so many kid’s activities, and bridge went by the wayside. Well, it is time to get back in the swing of it. If you play bridge, have ever played bridge, or even want to learn how to play bridge, MIYC is the place to do it. We have a very lively group of “social” bridge players. New Members are most welcome! There is no pressure to remember everything about the game and there are willing teachers to help you remember and learn. We play every Wednesday at noon if there are at least four of us available to play. Chef Bob serves us an amazing “surprise” lunch before we begin play. Call or e-mail me at: 239-389-0825 [email protected]

Mah Jongg anyone? Thursdays - 1PM

Coq au Vin Blanc By Florence Fabricant

Just as Oregon borrows from Burgundy in vineyards planted with pinot noirs and chardonnays, the region also inspires dinner. The iconic boeuf bourguignon would not be the best choice with chardonnay, but this version of coq au vin, replacing Chambertin with chardonnay, couldn’t be better. I want light with it, omitting the bacon lardons. And I gave a nod to Oregon’s truffle crop by finishing the sauce with a gloss of black truffle butter. It’s a modest investment that elevates the dish. A generous slab of unsalted butter (especially if it’s high-fat European-style) could also bolster the sauce, though with less foxy intrigue. Ingredients 1 T. grape-seed oil 1 - 3 ½ lb. chicken, in 10 pieces, without backbone, dried Salt and ground white pepper 8 oz. white pearl onions, blanched 3 min. & peeled 1 medium onion, finely chopped ¼ C. finely chopped celery 4 cloves garlic, sliced 9 oz.oyster mushrooms, trimmed, clumps separated Preparation Step 1 Heat the oil on medium-high in a 4-quart stovetop casserole or sauté pan. Add the chicken, skin side down, as many pieces as fit comfortably. Cook until lightly browned, season with slat & pepper and turn to brown the other side. Remove to a platter when done and repeat with the remaining chicken. Step 2 Add the pearl onions to casserole and toss in fat until lightly browned. Remove to a dish. Reduce heat to low. Add the chopped onion, celery and garlic, cook until softened, and stir in the mushrooms. When they wilt, add the wine, bring to a simmer and season with salt, pepper and lemon juice. Return chicken to casserole with any accumulated juices, baste, cover and cook 30 minutes, basting a few more times. Remove the chicken to a

platter. Step 3

¾ C. chardonnay 1 T. lemon juice 2 T. Butter (unsalted or black truffle) 1 T. minced tarragon

Increase heat to medium-high and cook the sauce and mushrooms about 5 minutes, until sauce thickens slightly. Lower heat, add the pearl onions and butter. When butter melts, check seasons, return chicken to casserole, baste and simmer a few minutes. Serve from casserole or transfer to a deep platter. Scatter the tarragon on top before serving.

Cooking with Chef Bob Letùs Get Sauced!

Chef Bob held a wonderful cooking class for members and guests teaching all of us how to make sauces! He made a basic hollandaise and then turned it into a Maltaise and a Béarnaise! He also taught us his secret to a good guacamole and bruschetta for healthy snacking. The sauces were served with a poached salmon with a blueberry sauce and a limoncello parfait for dessert. A glass of Riesling or sauvignon blanc enhanced each person's lovely lunch.

Speaking of Recipes - Here are two from the Kitchen of Commodore Ray Rosenberg and Linda Spell

Artichoke Quiche

Ray Rosenberg and Linda Spell

4 beaten eggs 8 oz. medium cheddar cheese, freshly grated 7 rolled Ritz crackers (put crackers between wax paper & use rolling pin)

2 6-oz. jars marinated artichoke hearts 1 bunch scallions 2 cloves garlic

Mince scallions (including half the green tops) and garlic. Sauté in artichoke oil. Cut artichoke hearts into thirds. Combine all ingredients, including oil used to sauté the scallions and garlic. Bake in 8x8 dish at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes. Cut into desired size squares. Note: Can be made a day or two ahead. Before slicing, cool in the baking pan then remove from pan and wrap in foil. To serve, cut into squares and heat on a rack set in a sheet pan.

Banana Nut Bread Linda Spell 1 c sugar 1 stick unsalted butter 2 beaten (whisked) eggs 1 ½ c. plain flour

1 tsp baking soda Pinch of salt 3 well-ripened bananas ½ c. chopped pecans

Cream butter and sugar together with back of large spoon till fluffy. Beat in eggs. Sift flour, soda and salt together twice then stir in, mixing thoroughly. Mash bananas with back of fork then whisk in a bowl until almost smooth. Stir in bananas and chopped pecans. Bake 40-60 minutes in a loaf pan lined with wax paper in 350 degree preheated oven. Begin checking the bread after 40 minutes with a slight touch to center of loaf. When center does not “give,” bread is done. Let pan sit on wire rack to cool a little before turning out bread and removing wax paper. Once wax paper is removed, continue to cool completely on rack before wrapping in foil. Freezes well in the foil sealed within a freezer bag, but needs to be defrosted in refrigerator. This is my own recipe I developed as a teenager. Over the years I have tried shortcuts like melting the butter, using a food processor or mixer, not letting the eggs and butter warm to room temperature, etc., etc., but the texture is not the same. It’s best done totally by hand with no shortcuts. Baking time depends on moisture content of bananas. If you’re using the little bananas we grow in our yards here on Marco Island, use 4 or 5 depending on size, and reduce the amount of sugar, since the home-grown bananas are sweeter.

Safety & Training

Are you prepared for a MEDICAL EMERGENCY on your boat? Are you adequately trained? Do you have a properly equipped medical kit? Have you taken the CPR/AED course offered through the Club? Because once you leave the dock you will not have quick access to EMS personnel and equipment. Before leaving the dock determine if any of your crew have a medical condition you need to be aware of. Are they subject to seasickness? If they are subject to severe allergic reactions, do they have an EpiPen with them? What about sunscreen? Is there adequate water to keep hydrated? Alert your crew how to move about the boat safely. Advise them where the first aid kit is located on board. Keep hands and fingers inside the boat. Your First Aid Kit should be sized for the type of boating you do & the emergencies which might be encountered. Remember to check your kit periodically and replace/update supplies as necessary. See next page for recommended content. If the medical emergency is severe or life threatening, make the MAYDAY call and get assistance headed in your direction. A reminder, again, for all members, especially those new to the Club this season, is that it is Board policy that all vessels participating in MIYC sanctioned on-the-water events must display a Vessel Safety Check sticker. Inspections are provided free of charge by either the US Coast Guard Auxiliary or America’s Boating Club.
