Veterans Day at the Club

The Club was packed on the evening of November 10 th . The Veteran’s Day ceremony took place in the courtyard where the new flag pole stood proud. Hurricane Irma toppled the original pole. The new one was installed just in time for Evening Colors. Twelve of our Veteran Members joined the ranks for the ceremony. It was an evening to feel proud of our Veterans and our Country. See the list of participating Veterans on page 2. See photos of the flag pole installation on page 10.

Cooking with Chef Bob

MIYC Members gathered at the Club for a day of Cooking with Chef Bob. His table was set up with a cutting board, 2 burners, a food processor and knives. On the menu: Salmon mousse, Bruschetta with chips, Clam Chowder and Chicken Roulade. Bob makes chopping look so easy. The secret is lots of practice and really sharp knives. The Bruschetta was fresh and chunky; very tasty. The Salmon mousse was creamy and

delicious on cucumber slices. After tasting the first two items, the Members sat down to try the Chowder and Roulade, both wonderful. Diners also had a taste of the Rose wine being introduced at the Club. Chef Bob hopes to host more of these instructional days at the Club. The few men in the room found it to be very interesting. And they enjoyed the food immensely!

The Aylwin Brothers as JohnnyCash&FriendsatMIYC! There was great anticipation at the Club on Saturday, November 18th. The Aylwin Brothers had a gig! Members had heard rumors that Chef Bob had musical talent. But they weren’t prepared for this! Bob and his brother Mike performed some of Johnny’s biggest hits and the crowd went wild! The room was packed as Members enjoyed some of June and Johnny’s favorite foods. Chef did his research and it paid off! Later, Bob’s son Robert joined in. Lots of talent there, too. In fact, after they played Folsom Prison Blues, they received an standing ovation! Let’s just hope that Chef Bob and Robert don’t get the itch to go to Nashville! Toward the end of the evening, Vicki Bretthauer and Angela Holt passed the (Cowboy) hat for Toys For Tots. The Members and guests contributed $518! Thank you, MIYC!

Wine & Dine with a German Flair If you missed the Wine & Dine in November, ach du lieber! Members were greeted with a glass of sparkling Riesling and tasty apps. Greg Christensen of Premier Wines introduced each wine as the courses were served. The food was perfectly paired with the wine. Bob and his staff again outdid themselves! The next Wine & Dine will be held in January. Be sure to reserve for this remarkable evening!

MIMA Dockmaster, Elmer Wheeler Retiring

For 20 years Elmer Wheeler has been the Dockmaster at the Marco Island Marina. Meeting boaters with a huge smile, helping with lines and just making everyone feel at home. Elmer always made room for new arrivals. And made sure that the boats were secure during storms. Elmer and his wife Debra joined us at the Club on Friday, November 17 th for cocktails and dinner. Toasts were made and several people spoke of Elmer’s helpful, joyful nature. We will miss you, Elmer!

Richard Varnes will be taking the reigns of MIMA Dockmaster when Elmer leaves. Be sure to welcome Richard when you see him around the Club and Marina Office.

Change of Watch at the Marina

On December 31, Elmer Wheeler will be retiring after almost 20 years of being the Dockmaster at the Marco Island Marina Association.

On November 17th, MIYC held a dinner party in recognition of Elmer’s years of service and contributions. It was well attended by about 90 people who had the chance to remember old times and thank Elmer for all that he has done. Another opportunity will be had on December 17 th when MIMA will have a pot luck dinner at the Dockmaster’s Building recognizing Elmer. And finally, before they get too far away, the MIMA Board is going to have a dinner party on Jan 11 th for Elmer and Deborah and the MIMA staff to thank them all for everything that they have done. On January 1, Richard Varnes will become the new Dockmaster. He too is originally from northern Florida, but spent plenty of time in southwest Florida while growing up. He operated oil-field service vessels off the coast of Louisiana and was general manager of a manufacturing plant in Indiana. He presently owns and operates a fishing charter business, Go Fish Florida out of Naples. Richard is also an ordained minister, so when quick marriages at sea hit rocky shores, he will be able to reconfirm them. Both Elmer and Richard will be working during December so stop by and wish Elmer well and welcome

He started on Valentine’s Day, 1998, and MIMA has been close to his heart ever since, and he has seen a lot of changes over the years. Back then MIYC and MIMA were one operation owned by Jack Antaramian. In addition to being the Dockmaster, Elmer was in charge of the Clubhouse, the docks and the entire grounds, although the Dockmaster’s office was just a trailer then. Elmer stayed with the organization when it was bought by the Charter Members in August 2001 and became a private Yacht Club. He continued as Dockmaster of MIMA when it became a separate organization in 2003. He was instrumental in the design and building of the Dockmaster’s Building and related facilities in 2004. But the things he remembers most are the many people that he has enjoyed working with and the visiting yachtsmen he has greeted. He says that nothing is better than hearing from a visitor, how much they enjoyed the people and the facilities of the Marina and the Club. After years of greeting snowbirds, Elmer and Deborah are about to become snowbirds themselves. They plan on spending their summers in southwest Colorado playing golf and fly-fishing. Then they will spend their winters back in southwest Florida, but still go back to Colorado for more skiing than they are able to get in now.

MIYC November Extended Cruise

By Peggy Frazier On Monday October 30, Current Obsession (Jim and Mary Carleen Ferry), Grand Pelican (Pete and Peggy Frazier), Sea-esta (Dave and Elie Everitt), and Seafari II (Bill and Sandy Wallen) embarked on the MIYC first Extended Cruise for the season! Our trip to Naples was a perfect day with a slight

and Grand Pelican had that Starboard engine impeller issue. Thankfully we were able to solve both issues. As they say: Cruising is fixing your boat in Exotic places while Yachting is paying someone to fix your boat in Exotic places! It is also nice to have friends to commiserate with! Dinner Tuesday night was the always terrific

breeze. Gathering at the NS&YC we looked forward to the friendly faces that always greet us there. Ray and Linda drove up to meet us and on Ray R o s e n b e r g ’ s recommendation we had a delightful happy hour and dinner at the nearby St. Germain restaurant. The next day all of us except for Bill and Jim (who w e r e w a i t i n g f o r connec t i ons ) boa r ded Grand Pelican to view the

NS&YC. Everitts and Fraziers departed back to Marco on Wednesday while the Wallens and Ferrys we r e j o i n e d b y l a n d cruisers Jim and Linda Marr and the Rosenbergs for the fabulous surf and turf buffet.

Future Cruises await as boats are repaired or replaced and residences are back to normal. The trip to Boca Grande/Punta Gorda on January 3-7 will accommodate both Yacht and Land Cruisers and Cruise Captain Ray Rosenberg awaits your confirmation. Some people watch the ships bearing their dreams sail out of sight...others like the group who joined the MIYC Extended Cruises hop aboard and take the helm! effects of IRMA on Port Royal and other Naples areas. Midway in the cruise the Starboard engine overheated so we had a nice slow trip and were welcomed back to the dock by the stay aboards! As the season's first cruise we all used the trip as an opportunity to make sure our boats were operational after IRMA. Wallens and Everitts were ship-shape but working on home repairs and the Ferrys and Fraziers had a bit of work to do. Current Obsession had some electronic issues

New Flag Pole at the MIYC! Irma took out the Club’s flag pole, it was time for a new one. The big day arrived for it’s debut; just in time for Veterans Day! Saturday, December 2 nd 6PM Kick-off December with a special Holiday Party. The evening will start with cocktails from 6-7 p.m. followed by a special Holiday dinner menu featuring Chef Bob’s famous Osso Bucco and Prime Rib. MIYC Boat Parade Saturday, December 9 th Cocktails - 5PM

Although the traditional Marco Island Christmas parade was cancelled due to hazards on the route, a group of Holiday-spirited boaters have planned a Marco River Boat Parade (safe route) on Saturday, December 9. Our own Pete & Peggy Frazier are coordinating the parade and will be aboard the Grand Pelican. The Marco Princess will lead the parade. The best place on the Island to view the fun and watch Santa arrive by boat will be at the Yacht Club. (The parade is expected to pass by the Club between 6 and 6:30 pm.) As the Club has done in the past, the public is invited to make dinner reservations to view the parade. Therefore, Members are urged to make their reservations now to assure priority seating. Cocktails start at 5 p.m. with $40pp dinner seatings at 6 pm, 6:30pm & 7pm. Attention Boaters: Boaters who want to join the parade should e-mail Peggy Frazier at [email protected] or call 906-228-6670 for details. There will be decorated boat participation awards which include complimentary dinners at the Marco Island Yacht Club for the Captain & First Mate. The Florida Council of Yacht Clubs The FCYC meets every two months and yours truly and MIYC leadership were scheduled to attend the Bradenton Yacht Club September 8-10, 2017, FCYC meeting. Linda and I actually were going up on “Irish Miss” to enjoy a calm summer cruise. Well, as we all experienced, Hurricane Irma screwed that up and was not kind to Marco Island and to the locations of many other FCYC clubs. First, Irma was headed up the east coast, then the west, and finally, right up the middle affecting all of the Florida peninsula - hitting the Keys first, then Marco Island, Naples and continuing up to Georgia and points north. When it made landfall in the Keys, the Marathon Yacht Club did suffer some damage, and as it moved north, many other of our sister clubs sustained damage. We all will recover and, in fact, most of the 36 clubs have submitted status reports to keep us posted on their conditions. The next FCYC meeting, scheduled for November 10-12, will be at the Fort Walton Yacht Club in the Panhandle. MIYC voting members are always encouraged to attend. Commodore

As I write this Month’s Article, I just realized that this will be the last Anchor Lines Article that I will write. My term is quickly coming to an end, yet there is still more to accomplish in this year. I just ran across an article I wrote in November 2010 when I was Sailing Fleet Captain. It is hard to believe I’ve served on the Bridge in some capacity for the past seven years. It has been a great journey and I’d like to reflect a little with you. Reflections: One of the greatest opportunities in serving this Club has been working with so many great people. We have built friendships and made many dear friends. I have lived through the many changes that have taken place here at MIYC. I have accomplished many goals which my main goal has always been to promote sailing and make a difference in whatever I do. In my early days of Sailing Fleet Captain, regattas were a big deal here at the Club with as many as 25 boats participating. These 3-day events started with a registration and Skipper’s Meeting on Friday night, usually a Colors Ceremony and big get together of fellow sailors, some who we hadn’t seen since the last regatta at another location. Saturday and Sunday were filled with races, starting at 10:00 am until late afternoon. We would come in exhausted yet invigorated, sometimes discouraged with the happenings of the day. Sunday was similar, yet a shorter day to prepare for the Big Regatta Banquet where we relaxed, enjoyed the sailors and shared the excitement of two days of racing. The Awards ceremony was the best, especially when we won a first, second or third place prize. What great times it was. This has been Ed’s and my life for this chapter of our book. After serving as Sailing Fleet Captain for five years, I was asked to join the higher ranks of the Bridge as Rear Commodore, Vice Commodore leading up to Commodore. This three year position included a seat on the Board of our Club. This has been a great experience and helps one see and appreciate the many people who work so hard to make this Club run so smoothly. Thanks to all who have served with me during these past years. At the beginning of 2018, you will have a new Commodore, Bob Winterhalter. Bob will take over with his new fresh ideas and move this Club into another year. Meanwhile, I will be preparing for the Commodore’s Ball coming up on January 20, 2018 where we will have the Change of Watch Ceremony followed by a great evening of dinner, dancing and celebration. I invite you all to be there but make your reservations early. It’s going to be a great event. The Bridge and Boating side of the Club is getting better all the time. The Bridge will take a new restructure which will include a further out Calendar of Boating events, more boating activities and we hope it will help you plan your calendars earlier and engage in more boating activities. We are privileged to belong to one of the finest Yacht Clubs in Southwest Florida, this new change will help you engage and get your boats out of their slips and join the boating festivities. I am excited for these new changes and the great people that are already working hard to set a great schedule for you, our dear Club members. I encourage you all to get involved, if you are not comfortable with taking your boat to an event, there is always some to follow or if any questions, there are many experienced captains and crew to help. On the Island, there are many boating classes which you will be hearing about more this upcoming year. There is much to learn each time you take your boat out for a venture. Watch for the many Extended Cruises, Day Cruises, Sunset Cruises, Sailing opportunities and other boating activities which will be listed in Anchor Lines, in our eblasts and on our website. MIYC can only be as great as its members, and with all of you, our great members we will always strive to be better than before. My ship is coming into the dock; a new ship will set sail in 2018. Christmas. It looks great…I hope you are able to stop by and see it! We also just held our November Membership Meeting. We provided membership an overview of the operations of the Club, a summary of 2018 finances, and updates from the Bridge and Committee activities. We had a great turnout. And, for the first time we also provided access to the meeting on ‘GoToMeeting.com’. While we did not have many ‘on-line’ participants, we will continue to offer these meetings electronically to make sure all members have a chance to attend even when they are not on the island. If you are interested, the material presented at the meeting is provided in the key document section on the members side of the website. At the meeting, we also presented the Board of Directors for 2018, and recognized a number of the members and staff that helped prior to and after Irma. I continue to believe that what makes our Club unique is the engagement of and support by the membership. It is truly heartening to see the progress we have made and know that our members are the ones who are making it happen. It is also our members who benefit from the progress of the Club. I hope you will have the opportunity to participate in one or more of our special holiday events between now and the New Year! They are going to be spectacular! Chairman’s Report

We have had a great start to our year – despite the challenges presented by Irma! Member attendance at events

has been very good. The Member Events Committee has conducted a number of memorable events this year – including the ‘Saturday Night Fever’ party! (Who will forget Jeff Comeaux leading a Disco Dance session!?!?) Even more satisfying is the planning and event scheduling for the coming year… Angela Holt and her committee have put together a great calendar for 2018. If you haven’t seen it recently, check it out on our web site! Chef Bob has been working to create a more diverse menu, and plans to modify the menu monthly. Make sure you visit the Club regularly to sample his most recent offerings! Pam and Chef Bob have been responding to an increasing number of banquet inquiries. Already, we have more weddings scheduled in 2018 than we have in a number of years. And our new pricing policy for banquet pricing means these events will contribute significantly to our financial success. And, our increased focus on managing costs, coupled with higher member counts than a year ago means we have started the year in better financial shape than in recent memory. The overall positive start to our year is the result of very good planning by our committees during the development of our budget, and the engagement and support of our members. For example, the ‘Deck the Halls’ day at the Club on 27 November was supported by a substantial number of members who helped decorate the Club for Dave Everitt Chairman

Ahoy Members of MIYC. December is upon us and there are plenty of things to talk about. But let us not forget November. November was very special this year for several reasons, the least not being our tremendous team effort in Club restoration after the storm and continuity in the food & beverage operation as a whole. I must say that the hard work that began a few months ago has begun to show very satisfying results here at the Club. The Members Event Committee has continued to be a solid organizing team that has solidified an ever evolving structure for our spectacular events. Participation in marketing by several Members , as well as our very own Pam Door, has continued to provide proper notification and exciting advertising for all of our Club events, which is so very important. The House & Staff Committee, lead by Mr. Bob DeFeo and myself, (and assisted in so many ways by

Vicki Bretthauer and others) has given the food and beve r age ope r a t i on t he necessary boost that will carry us through the busy season. I have great confidence in our overall leadership moving forward. I believe the glass is always half full. In our case I believe

I hope everyone had a very Happy Thanksgiving. I have to commend our kitchen and front-end staff for doing an outstanding job handling close to two hundred members and guests for Thanksgiving dinner. The three carving stations and food presentation were excellent, and service was outstanding with a quick turnaround and set-up for each of the three seating times. November was an active month at the Club with a special Colors Ceremony honoring our Veterans, the Alywin Brothers special Johnny Cash evening, fine dining, three banquets, Thanksgiving, Happy Hour Friday’s is always a big hit and one wedding. You do not want to miss our December events, so check out the calendar and make your reservations early because these events tend to fill up fast. Making reservations early, as we get into season, is extremely important so we can schedule appropriately to provide good service and order the right amount of food. It would be very disappointing if we must turn away members who wait until the last minute to make reservations. We continue to make some progress with our maintenance projects and Burgee Bar. Both lanai floors and steps have been cleaned, sealed and polished. The front entrance steps and ramp have also been cleaned, sealed and polished. The Burgee Bar is looking great, (thanks Jim), and has been opened for Friday night Happy Hour. Service is improving with the newly enlarged bar and wine bar. Jim McKeown says the sound barriers installed have reduced the noise level by 12 decibels, so you can carry on a conversation and hear what is being said. Marco Canvas is installing the canvas which should be completed by the beginning of December. Still waiting for the electrician to fix our wiring so we can install the fans in the Burgee Bar. Our three outdoor heaters are fired up and ready for the cooler weather.

We still have some repair work and painting to complete. The plan is to paint the courtyard furniture and dress up the landscaping in the courtyard so it will be ready to use by January. We continue to work on

getting the roof and gutters repaired but like everyone else on the Island, it is a waiting game. The flickering lights in the Harbour Room can be annoying and we hope to have them fixed soon. Most of the parking lot lighting has been repaired but there are still some lights that need to be fixed. The lighting in the circle in front of the Club House was ripped out with the loss of the palm trees and we are working to repair those lights. The new parking regulations for MIYC and MIMA is a challenge but we continue to analyze the situation and make some adjustments. During heavy attendance we now have three valets which seem to work well for Thanksgiving. We also have a new golf cart to use that will assist in speeding up the valet parking process. Be sure to say hi and welcome our newer front- end employees Bridget & Tannille. Maritza, who has been working at the Club for some time, is now assisting the servers so be sure to say hi and welcome her too. Starting the week of December 3 rd the Club will be open Thursday through Saturday for lunch and dinner and Sunday Brunch. The Burgee Bar will be in full swing after our grand opening in January. Safety and Training

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Traditional thinking and training has led us to believe that carbon monoxide build up is prevented, or at least can be reduced, by the introduction of moving, fresh air. While this is largely true, we are well aware of the problem of the station wagon effect, which pulls polluted air into the cockpit and cabin while underway. Now there is a new phenomenon-“open air carbon monoxide poisoning” (OACMP). OACMP is the buildup of CO in the cavities associated with swim platforms, spaces formed by pontoons, and especially the stern areas of certain houseboat designs. The build-up of toxins in these areas become super concentrated and are not necessarily dissipated while underway. Polluters are both engines and on-board generators exhausted into the cavity.

OACMP has become a hot topic after forensic review of some recent drownings indicated that the victims died as a result of poisoning not the aspiration of water.
