MOTHERS WRITTEN & DIRECTED BY PEDRO ALMODÓVAR – PREMIERES 3RD  CLICK TO SEE MORE Almodóvar’s style is immediately front and centre, with his signature visuals, and a story focused on women and motherhood. In this film two women’s lives intersect while they wait together at the hospital to give birth. Both are single and became pregnant by accident: one is middle-aged, doesn’t regret it, and is exultant; the other is a teenager, scared, repentant and traumatized. They form a remarkable bond as they both confront motherhood, and the series of cascading events that unfold, which lead to unforeseen, and deeply emotional, consequences for both of them. MEMORIES ARE MADE OF THIS

BELFAST WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY KENNETH BRANAGH

A semi-autobiographical film set in the Northern Ireland capital in the late 1960s. At the centre of the film is Buddy, a young boy on the cusp of adolescence, whose life is filled with familial love, childhood hijinks and a blossoming romance. But as the 1960s stagger to a close, Buddy’s childhood dreams turn into a nightmare. Simmering social discontent suddenly explodes in Buddy’s own street and escalates, fast. First a masked attack, then a riot, and finally a city-wide conflict, with religion fanning the flames further afield. Catholics vs Protestants, loving neighbours suddenly deadly foes. Buddy must make sense of this chaotic new landscape of lockdown, peopled by heroes and villains – that once existed only on the cinema screen, but now threaten to upend everything he knows and loves – as an epic struggle plays out in his own backyard. Can his father be the hero he needs him to be? Will his mother sacrifice her past in order to protect her family’s future? How can his beloved grandparents be kept safe? And how can he love the girl of his dreams? The answers lie in Buddy’s compelling, funny, poignant and heart-breaking journey through riots, violence, the joy and despair of family relationships and the agony of first love, all accompanied by the dancing, music and laughter that only the Irish can muster when the world turns upside down. MAN OF MANY TALENTS SIR KENNETH BRANAGH

The multifaceted talent of the Irish-born English actor, director, and writer, Sir Kenneth Branagh is on full display this February as he looms large over two films releasing in cinemas this month. He serves as writer and director of Belfast , and as director and lead actor for the latest adaptation of Agatha Christie’s murder mystery novel Death on the Nile . Belfast is a movie straight from Branagh's own experiences as a boy – charting a path towards adulthood through a world that has suddenly turned upside down with the onset of the ‘Troubles’ in Northern Ireland in the late 1960s. His stable and loving community and everything he thought he understood about life is changed forever, but joy, laughter, music and the formative magic of the movies remain. Belfast is an uplifting film in spite of the story’s tragic details, and the deeply personal project is on-track for Awards Season success, with its directing, script writing, and performances being recognised, and it has already won Branagh the Best Screenplay Golden Globe. The past two years have been a time riddled both with anxieties and the reflection that can accompany them, and Branagh channeled his unrest and contemplations into Belfast – a black-and- white tribute to his childhood. “I felt at the beginning of the pandemic, when I was writing this, that we needed to be a little kinder to ourselves,” he has said. “We all needed to appreciate and value however imperfect – and every family, I suppose, is bound to be – the gifts that we’ve been given.” Read more about Death on the Nile page 7

An experienced sustainability strategist and vintage fashion lover, Jacinta FitzGerald is the programme director for inspiring local initiative, Mindful Fashion NZ, a collective of Kiwi design- ers, suppliers and manufacturers keen to reduce their social and environmental impact. She also runs MakeGood, a con- sultancy that works with innovative apparel sector brands in New Zealand and globally to put sustainable practices at their core, and seeks to ensure the old model of take-make-waste, which exploits people and the planet along the way, is a thing of the past. She was introduced to current Mindful Fashion NZ board members, designer Kate Sylvester and her husband, Wayne Conway via a client in the United Kingdom, when MFNZ was still in its infancy, “so I was able to become involved very early on in the strategising about what an organisation that wanted to take on sustainability in a collective way would look like”. She went on to become one of the founding board members before taking on the role of Programme Director, which she is thriving in today. FitzGerald had a long career in fashion working as a designer and patternmaker for a number of companies, before step- ping away in 2012 after becoming disillusioned by the indus- try’s lack of commitment to more planet-conscious practices. “I felt like it was heading towards total annihilation – for want of a better word – so I stepped away and went back to university,” she explains. There she completed a research paper into sustainability in the fashion industry, which put her onto the trajectory of where she is today. FitzGerald has completed project-based work with many global and local brands, and says her international connections have been in- valuable to her work with MFNZ today. The or- ganisation recently published a Sustainability Insights Report into our fashion industry, which was a first for New Zealand. The incredibly de- tailed report demonstrates the collective progress being made in the New Zealand fashion industry, and also presents a path for- ward for positive sustainability action. One of the main reasons it came about was to raise the profile of the industry in order for the likes of the government and consumers to take notice, “because we needed to be taken se- riously if any change was going to happen,” says FitzGerald. “The report was essential for >Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6 Page 7 Page 8 Page 9 Page 10 Page 11 Page 12 Page 13 Page 14 Page 15 Page 16 Page 17 Page 18 Page 19 Page 20 Page 21 Page 22 Page 23 Page 24 Page 25 Page 26 Page 27 Page 28 Page 29 Page 30 Page 31 Page 32 Page 33 Page 34 Page 35 Page 36 Page 37 Page 38 Page 39 Page 40 Page 41 Page 42 Page 43 Page 44 Page 45 Page 46 Page 47 Page 48 Page 49 Page 50 Page 51 Page 52 Page 53 Page 54
