THE SPY WHOCHARMED ME THE MOLE AGENT An intriguing fly-on-the-wall documentary from Chile, in which a private investigator hires a dapper 80-year-old man to spy on the goings-on at a retirement home, when a client of his suspects the caretakers of elder abuse. Gradually ‘life on the inside’ chips away at the Pink Panther playfulness of the premise, and the film settles into a sometimes sombre consideration of ageing, and the universal longing for human connection. When a self-destructive teenager, Sam, is suspended from boarding school and sent home, the last thing he wants is to help care for Ruth, his newly-arrived, feisty, cranky, gin-swilling grandmother. The two immediately butt heads, but a bond grows between them as Ruth reveals her fearless spirit, and a desire to grab life while she still can. it’s a transformative love story, in which a 77-year-old ex-war journalist and her estranged suicidal grandson find true familial love with each other; an old woman is enabled to face her own mortality, and a young man learns to embrace life again. Writer and director Matthew J Saville drew inspiration from his own experiences growing up in New Zealand: “I have unashamedly written a film that deals with some of the strongest dramatic themes we are confronted with as humans: Life, love, death, grief, shame, and our own mortality... THE NEW ZEALAND FASHION WEEK DOYENNE TALKS TO HÉLÈNE RAVLICH ABOUT 21 YEARS AT THE HEAD OF THE STYLE CALENDAR’S MOST EXCITING EVENT The creator and managing director of New Zealand Fashion Week, Dame Pieter Stewart, has spent more than 21 years pro- moting New Zealand fashion in all its beautiful shapes and forms. Her history in fashion goes back much further however, to her role as Associate Editor for Fashion Quarterly Magazine in the 1980s, and her time co-ordinating the Corbans Fashion Collections and Wella Fashion Collections well into the 90s. The unflappable Stewart has also been involved with numerous charitable and community service groups, and in 2012 re- ceived the Insignia of a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to fashion and the community. Cool, calm and collected just weeks out from this year’s New Zealand Fashion Week when we speak, Stewart is at the helm of the event once more. NZFW was recently sold to a new owner, but the stylish dame is excited to celebrate its twentieth anniver- sary and is as passionate about New Zealand fashion as ever. When asked if she ever envisaged NZFW would still be a major calendar date after all these years, she admits that she never really approached it that way, “probably because it’s a year- round business and you just get on with it year by year. I really didn’t think I’d still be so involved twenty years down the track, but there you go.” She calls the yearly celebration of New Zealand style “busy and intense, then it’s over and you just start thinking about the next one”. Stewart adds that despite all the hard work, “it’s really exciting at this stage and I can’t wait to see the Retrospective Show in particular. Some of the designers have got incredible archives, and it will be wonderful to see their history on the catwalk”. STYLE COUNSEL DAME PIETER STEWART

The event began in the Town Hall and returned there in 2019, and Stewart admits to mixed feelings when it comes to the iconic venue. “For an event as big as ours it’s way too small and very expensive,” she explains, “which is why we have the marquees out in Aotea Square, just to contain everything we need.” She adds that she does know the venue like the back of her hand however, “and it’s such a beautiful building and so perfectly located in the centre of the city. You deal with what you’ve got and get on with it”. With international borders pretty much indefinitely closed due to Covid-19 restrictions, and then the recent Australian travel bubble announcements, I ask Dame Pieter: will there be a virtual event of sorts happening for those unable to attend? “We don’t have a livestream happening online, but I always archive shows and shoot them all out to different places and people as soon as a cut is made. We will have a livestream happening on a big screen out in Aotea Square though, so everyone can see the shows as they happen.”” Stewart has always been a huge supporter of New Zealand fashion, and New Zealand made. Does she think the industry is in a good place right now after the upheaval bought on by the pandemic? I’m thinking of several labels who rose to the chal- lenge and have a loyal local base supporting them all the way. “I do think that New Zealanders have got behind New Zealand

businesses over the past year, and some labels have come through Covid-19 extremely well,” says the astute businesswoman. “Those that al- ready had a strong online customer base grew that, and were well-prepared for trading dur- ing lockdown in particular.” She adds that smaller businesses are often nimbler and thus can pivot (for want of a less-tired expression) more easily, “but we’ve all had to re-think what we do, no matter what business we are in”. The fashion veteran says that one positive for the industry is that Covid-19 has seen many designers pare down their collections, only producing what they need to and making use of the likes of deadstock. “It results in less wastage, and less inventory sitting around waiting to throw into a sale. We are learning more and more the importance of recycle and reuse, which is vital going forward.” With stellar outfit-changes throughout NZFW, Stewart is always proudly wearing New Zealand designers. Does she have favourite labels that she turns to again and again? “I don’t buy a lot of clothes,” says the preter- naturally stylish mother and grandmother, “mainly because I don’t need them. You don’t dress up for meetings anymore so I have a wardrobe full of beautiful jackets that don’t get much of an airing these days!” When asked to name names however, she pulls some favourites out of the hat that include Kate Sylvester, Hailwood, Zambesi, Helen Cherry and Paula Ryan. When it comes to

emerging designers that she is excited about she immediately names ‘Project Runway’ winner Benjamin Alexander, who will be show- ing at NZFW for the second time this year. “His work is fantastic,” she elaborates, “and Caitlin Crisp is another one that I think is a little star. The New Generation show is always a great place to spot new talent, and the Grad Show has five institutions involved this year so will be exciting to watch.” Lastly, when asked if she has any particular shows or runway ‘moments’ that stick in her mind from the last 20 years, she says there are many – and for so many different reasons. “A highlight was definitely when (British fashion writer, designer, & curator) Colin McDowell and (esteemed fashion journalist) Hilary Alexander came down from the UK, and you can’t talk about significant moments without mentioning the year that (Heatherette designer) Richie Rich showed and put Pamela Anderson on the cat- walk!” She also recalls significant New Zealand designer shows over the years, like those by Zambesi, Hailwood, Nom*D, Kate Sylvester, and Trelise Cooper that took seasonal collec- tions and transformed them into productions more than worthy of the considerable praise they received. “When I look at shows like that I just think ‘wow’, that is so far fromwhat we were doing twenty years ago.” “We’re more than just a platform now, and that is really exciting.” NEW ZEALAND FASHION WEEK, 23RD–29TH  CLICK TO SEE MORE

DRESSING TO SUCCEED OF DRESS FOR SUCCESS, & KIRSTY CAMERON, COSTUME DESIGNER FOR NZ FILM THE JUSTICE OF BUNNY KING , TALK TO WRITER HÉLÈNE RAVLICH ABOUT THE POWER OF CLOTHES TO TRANSFORM & TRANSCEND. Bunny King is a homeless mother-of-two who earns a meagre amount washing windows at traffic lights, using warmth and wit to charm coins from gridlocked motorists, and saving every cent, with the aim of securing a home and regaining custody of her children. The film, which is screening in cinemas now, is a story of hope & heartbreak, disadvantage and determination – ultimately it’s a triumph over adversity tale about women fighting their way back from the bottom rung of society. Confronted by judgemental property man- agers during her search for a place to call home, Bunny is referred to Dress for Success – a real-life, global not-for-profit organisation that is dedicated to empowering women, and helping them achieve economic indepen- dence, by providing them with professional attire, a network of support, and the tools to help clients thrive in work and in life. When she began working on pre-production for The Justice of Bunny King , Auckland-based costume designer Kirsty Cameron, along with the film’s star, Essie Davis, spent time with the incredible team at Dress for Success , working to bring Bunny’s wardrobe together, and ensure it reflected her journey through life. “Part of the script was written with Bunny using Dress for Success in mind,” says the costume designer, “so we naturally ap- proached the organisation in Auckland and spent a bit of time in there. It helped both Essie and I see what worked for her, and what was ‘real’ and on offer for people who access the space.” Cameron has been a long-time supporter of Dress for Success and has often donated clothing after a production has wrapped, but until then had no idea about the broad scope of their work. Robyn Moore, the Executive Manager at Dress for Success , says that there is no one type of woman who use their services – but that they all arrive with one goal in mind: they want to feel their best while job searching, and in the first few weeks of employ- ment, and Dress for Success offer all this and more. “We know it takes a lot of courage to come through our door,” says Moore, “and we make sure there is no judgement. We don’t even need to know a woman’s back story – we already know they are a woman in need, and are so thankful that they came to us.” Referrals to Dress for Success come via around 20 key organi- sations around the country like MSD and WINZ, and women can also self-refer. She said that Covid-19 had a major impact on the number of women who came to them for help – many with changed financial circumstances, such as women thrown back into the job market after 20 years due to the fact that their partners had lost their jobs, and others who had been made redundant from roles they had held for 30 plus years and didn’t know where to start. “It’s more than just clothes,” says Moore, “it’s helping women get back into the mindset of being confident enough to walk into a job interview knowing they have so much to offer.” The clothes, accessories, and styling offered, give women the confidence that they look the part – and the Dress for Success Career Centre assists with CV preparation and interview skills. When a client successfully gets a job, Dress for Success creates, and gives them, a capsule wardrobe to see them through the working week. “Who wants to spend their first paycheck on clothes?” says Moore with a smile, adding that a capsule wardrobe will also enable an individual to “blend in” with their new organisation. They cater to a diverse range of women from size 8 to 28, and also supply makeup and undergarments, and although most consultations with a DFS stylist sit at around the 45-minute mark, they are there for as long as a woman needs them. Like the inimitable Bunny King, the women who access Dress for Success want one thing: to provide for their family, and yes – to succeed. As Moore so beautifully says: “we don’t need to know why you’re here or how big your need is, because we know that you are in need. We’re just here to get you back on your feet”.
