WRITER HÉLÈNE RAVLICH TALKS TO THE CREATOR OF THE MAGNIFICENT CRYSTAL WAKA THAT ARRIVED IN AUCKLAND TO HELP GUIDE US THROUGH CHALLENGING TIMES. In July, a magnificent 10-metre-high waka constructed of hundreds of shimmering crystals was installed outside Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Ta¯maki, rising from the gallery’s forecourt pool to suggest navigation to worlds beyond our own. Commissioned by the gallery in collaboration with the Edmiston Trust, Guide Kaia¯rahi is the work of Auckland-based artist, Reuben Paterson (Nga¯ti Rangitihi, Nga¯i Tu¯hoe, Tu¯hou- rangi), and is proving to be somewhat of an anchor during unsettling times. The sculpture, made of 611 iridescent crystals, navigates a spectacular journey from Papa- tu¯a¯nuku into the embrace of Ranginui, and casts a galaxy of stars over the reflection pool. As the crystals illuminate the gallery in rainbow refractions, “the waka appears to venture sky- ward, seemingly levitating above the forecourt pool,” says the artist, who was inspired by the well-known legend of a phantom waka that appeared at Lake Tarawera 10 days before the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. The gallery waka appears magical – an apparition that floats in the sky while having a narrative linked closely to our own history. He guides us as an escort into unknown or unmapped territories, which is definitely how many of us feel as we navigate a new way of life in the shadow of the pandemic. When I talk with Paterson, the country is almost one week into a level four lockdown, which he acknowledges has been a positive time for him. “I love it, it’s been a great opportunity to catch up on things I’ve been meaning to do for months,” says the artist best known for his creations in glitter and diamond dust. “I moved into a new house about four months ago and I’m still living out of boxes, so there is plenty of time-consuming stuff that really needs atten- tion. It’s a time to pause, and I’m interested to see what happens over the next few weeks.” With his latest piece, Guide Kaia¯rahi , arriving on site during such an unpredictable period in history, Paterson says the work has taken on a new role in the community, and is fitting into a very different climate than the one he envis- aged for it. “There are so many things you can’t plan for when creating a piece of public art,” he says, “and all of the things that sur- round this piece make art a very different type of experience for all who visit it. I hope it brings creativity, and a sense of hope.” The piece was also created under unusual circumstances, when after several years in the planning, the waka was largely crafted via Zoom. “It was completely manufactured in “SOLID YET DELICATE, VISIBLE YET INVISIBLE, & PRACTICAL YET UNPRACTICAL...”

apparition, and we were just floating appari- tions on screens who never actually shared anything physical.” He says a difficult process became easier the more he trusted UAP with the project, “because once that trust was fully formed, I became so much more comfortable with communicating solely via Zoom”. When our borders briefly opened Paterson flew over to spend three days with the waka, “and then I could finally observe any changes or needs that had to be met then and there. I was so grateful for that singular moment with the waka, as via screens it was so hard to see the materials being formed as they were all clear. That is why a trust relationship was just so important during those early stages”. Looking at the work from afar, it seems so delicate and fragile, but the fact that it is a public art work meant it had to be able to take a few knocks. The artist says he wanted it to appear “solid yet delicate, visible yet invisible, and practical yet unpractical. Every- thing that goes into the public space has to be over engineered, so it can be presented as fragile and delicate, but structurally it’s quite the opposite”. Paterson now views his relationship with the artists and craftspeople at UAP “as a true friendship, and their ideals really align with mine. We are already planning new work that is yet to be signed off, but it’s so exciting that this process has allowed me to expand my practice to sculpture alongside painting”. He has an exhibition of paintings – Amen Break – currently scheduled in late September at Gow Langsford Gallery in Auckland, all of which have a connection of sorts to Guide Kaia¯rahi with good reason. “The Gow Langs- ford Gallery is practically opposite where the waka sits, and the pieces are glitter on canvas cloud paintings and kowhaiwhai. Brisbane,” explains Paterson, “one reason being that it was constructed by Urban Art Projects (UAP), who are a specialist public art manufacturing business. If I’d tried to do it here in New Zealand, I would have had to nomi- nate numerous different industries to work on the one project, which would have compli- cated everything from finances to timelines. The manufacturing process was so complex and detailed that it became all about stream- lining that process as much as possible.” The process also involved elements that can’t be completed in New Zealand, particularly when it comes to a work of great scale. A direct result of the Brisbane manufacturing process that Paterson particularly loved is the fact that “the waka got to have one sailing, from Australia to Aotearoa”. The chaos at global ports over the past year meant that it missed several sailings however, “so in reality, the waka missed the waka,” adds Paterson with a laugh. From the beginning of its construction, Covid- 19 reared its ugly head, with Paterson planning a trip to Brisbane to kick things off with UAP that was scuppered when our borders were closed down. “We were forced to Zoom the whole process, which was difficult,” he says. “I’d never had the experience of creating something so material via the process of just looking at a computer screen. But I did like the fact that the waka gradually appeared as an

and take in the magic of Paterson’s work, with art and wonder being so important especially in these strange times. The new collaboration between New Zealand Opera and Black Grace brings a fresh perspective to Gluck’s opera – (m)Orpheus portrays a man willing to risk everything for love but unable to find love in himself. New Zealand-Samoan Baritone, Benson Wilson, is the talent tasked with bringing the new Orpheus to life, after arriving back in New Zealand following a tumultuous 2020 and early 2021 as part of the English National Opera in London. Currently locked down in his partner’s grandparents’ house in the Auckland suburb of Mount Albert, he is staying hopeful that things will open up again soon so rehearsals can properly begin. “I feel like I’m a pro at this after London,” he says with a laugh, “and I’m really happy to be back here working on a production with a Polynesian twist, which is something you just don’t get to experience over there. It stole my heart.” The singer says that in uncertain times it’s important to keep working on your voice, “but just as importantly, your mental health. Your body carries your instrument around, so everything the body experiences has a direct effect on the voice”. His recommendation is to try to relax and “don’t overwork yourself, because that is so easy to do. I sing every day, but mostly because I love to.” Physically, he says that rest is very important for keeping his voice in check, “as well as keeping on top of my hydration – I drink anywhere from 3-5 litres of water a day. Also, anything that gets the blood pumping is key for preparing yourself as an artist about to go on stage”. Turning back to the subject of (m)Orpheus , Wilson says he’s excited about bringing to the stage a traditional opera with a Pasifika twist, and also an all-Pasifika cast. “Presenting the first Polynesian Orpheus will be my greatest honour,” says the baritone, “and as much as I can do to prepare, it comes down to a collaborative effort between myself, the director (founder and artistic director of Black Grace, Neil Ieremia), and my colleagues on stage. We are presenting living characters, who react to the energies around them in an organic way.” “I’m just super excited to bring this warm, Polynesian, relatable character to Orpheus, and if that means I have to rehearse via Zoom or socially distance, I’m just happy to be able to sing.”

HOW FAR WOULDYOU GO TO SAVE EVERYTHING YOU LOVE? NZ OPERA & BLACK GRACE (M)ORPHEUS Directed by Neil Ieremia. A re-imagining of Christoph Gluck’s influential eighteenth- century operatic masterpiece Orpheus and Eurydice, blending rich Pasifika storytelling with the themes of Greek tragedy. Renowned New Zealand composer and percussionist Gareth Farr has reorchestrated the work: the notes are identical to the original score, but the effect of using different instruments (some that didn’t even exist in Gluck’s day) changes the whole atmosphere of the piece. This project is about honouring Gluck’s masterpiece and presenting it in a way that asks questioins about what this story could mean in the context of today’s society. Their incredible works of wearable art come to life on stage, each piece inspired by one of the six different worlds chosen each year for the WOW Show. ACTOR, COMEDIAN, MUSICIAN, WRITER, TV PRESENTER, AND BUSY PERSON, HAYLEY SPROULL TALKS TO WRITER HÉLÈNE RAVLICH ABOUT TAKING ON THE CHALLENGE OF LIVE LIVE CINEMA: NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD . Fans of live theatre – and also the cult horror film genre – would be stupid to miss the upcoming season of Silo Theatre and Jumpboard Productions’ most ambitious Live Live Cinema project to date – an immersive live experience of cult classic Night of the Living Dead , coming to the Hollywood Avondale as soon as we’re out of lockdown. George A. Romero’s debut filmmade waves when it premiered in 1968, but the Live Live Cinema format kicks the whole thing up a notch, as every element of sound in the film – from dialogue to sound effects – is thrust into the brave and capable hands of actors Hayley Sproull and Jack Buchanan. As the film plays silently, the pair have the monumental task of voicing all but one of the characters, creating all foley and sound effects, and playing a new original score by composer Leon Radojkovic live on stage, amplifying the suspense and tension of the film to the absolute limit. In a first for Live Live Cinema, the experience will retain the voice of lead actor Duane Jones, who made history as the first black lead in a horror film, as he held a mirror up to the social and political concerns of 1960s’ America.

When I talk to Sproull she is playing piano in her home studio in Auckland’s Avondale, “ploughing on ahead for the show that is on pause!” says the multi-hyphenate with a laugh. She says the process of continuing with rehearsals in a lockdown scenario isn’t actually too arduous, “as we’re working with an immovable film as opposed to an organic production where you are directly interacting with multiple other people more. We are tied to the film as it were, meaning there is heaps that Jack (Buchanan) and I can do at home separately”. She has been busying herself with music, practising synching herself with the film on her laptop, which she’s lucky enough to have been able to do in the aforementioned studio adjacent to her house. The space was built for her by her partner, who fortu- itously finished the project just two weeks before lockdown – and therefore can go about his own business with minimal disruption from the thesp. “It’s a godsend,” says Sproull, “be- cause we live in a very small house and would otherwise be all over each other’s personal space. It would get pretty tedious fast, and he’d get sick of the film way before I did!” Live Live Cinema projects are described as “an exhilarating collision of cinema, theatre, and music”, so what should theatre- goers expect when they roll up to the Hollywood for an immer- sive live experience of cult classic Night of the Living Dead ? “They are going to see so much,” says Sproull, “and there is a

definite knack to watching it. I’ve done a Live Live Cinema show before and the trick is to look around – you can either watch the screen in the background and just listen to the sounds that Jack and I are making and treat it as a new way of watching the film, or you can watch us running around the stage, making sounds and bringing the foley to life.” What’s a foley, you may ask? Foley is the creation of everyday sounds which are added to film, television or theatre to enhance the audio, and is named after Jack Foley, a stunt- man for silent films who added sound effects when the studio was recording the music score. The foley artist mimics the actions of the actors on screen, sounds such as footsteps, fighting, knocking on doors, rustling papers etc. In opera and theatre, the sound effects are performed live by a foley artist in a booth on stage, enhancing the performance and drawing the audience further into the story. It’s no mean feat, and given the amount of time Sproull and Buchanan are on stage, one imagines it’s seriously exhausting! “In all honesty, most Live Live Cinema audience members don’t know where to look” laughs Sproull, “and watch whatever catches their attention at any given time. It’s a wild ride and there is just so much to see – I feel like it’s the kind of show you could see a thousand times and catch something new every time.”

It also seems like the kind of show that is in- credibly demanding on a performer, which Sproull says is most definitely the case. “When they did the first Live Live Cinema ten or so years ago, there was a guy in a foley booth, a band that played the music and four actors who did the voices,” she explains “and they were all separate and focused on their one thing. When I first did a Live Live Cinema show, there were four actors doing it all, and now there is just the two of us making foley, making music, and doing voices – sometimes all at once.” She says the key to making what sounds like controlled chaos work is “compartmentalising the different aspects in your brain, almost like patting your head and tapping your belly at the same time. It’s like choreography, a dance between the two of us and the film”. It’s definitely not the kind of show one drifts away in – be they the audience or the hard- working performer. “As the film is a horror we want the audience to be entertained, but hopefully also create a feeling of suspense,” says Sproull. “A bonus would be to get a few scares out of them too!” LIVE LIVE CINEMA: NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD Currently postponed until further notice – find updates on the Silo Theatre website and Facebook page.  CLICK TO SEE MORE

A familiar face to Shortland Street fans who know him as the much-loved but ultimately doomed ambo, Ali Karim, actor Tane Williams-Accra is a man of many talents. Born in Brixton, UK, to Kiwi and Guyanese parents, he grew up in Wellington and is a graduate of Whitireia: Wellington Performing Arts Centre. Also a skilled musician and dancer, Williams-Accra is gearing up for taking part in the 2021 World of WearableArt Awards Show in Wellington, which he has played a role in since he was at high school. We speak to him during lockdown in Karori, where he’s making the most of his time working online, as well as indulging in his obsession with consuming all manner of streaming content. How is WOW looking for this year, given we’ve all just I’ve been emailing with the people there and they still seem positive it will happen, so we’re all just rolling with the punches. Like everything else, we just have to take every day as it comes. Bit of a spanner though! found ourselves in lockdown again?

You’ve been a long time WOW participant, how did you first get involved in it? I was in my second to last year at high school, and myself and my friend, Jayden Daniels, (who you’ll know from Shortland Street and Head High ) heard about auditions for the show and went along. We got in and just loved every minute of it. What makes taking to the stage at WOW so different from a fashion show? It looks like it gets pretty wild at times… It isn’t a fashion show in any shape or form, it’s pure art. You’re wearing a piece of art and are surrounded by dozens and dozens of other pieces of art, it’s so beautiful, and there is so much depth and meaning behind it as a whole. It looks like a moving tableau! Do you have a piece of art you’ve worn over the years that has really stood out to you? There are so many, it’s hard to choose. I did wear the winning piece one year – 2014 Supreme Award Winner, Poly Nation by Kate MacKenzie – that was made of suitcases (pictured right). I wore a chest piece and a piupiu, and then had a waka that I dragged behind me on massive wheels. It was such an amazing piece and I feel so privileged to have been a part of it. You’re a self-confessed obsessive content consumer, what have you been watching lately? So much! I have just finished watching Dave on Neon, which was incredible. Lil Dicky is such a great comedic rapper, but Dave also shows that he’s got a really deep knowledge of comedy on screen as well. I’m hanging out for season three of Atlanta , which is such an amazing show, and I’m a big fan of Rick and Morty for some mindless fun. Oh, and I can’t forget The Panthers , which is just so, so good. I was lucky enough to see the first two episodes at a cast and crew screening before it went live on TVNZ OnDemand, and I was absolutely blown away. I’ve got some friends who were involved in the making of it and I’m so incredibly proud of them. It exceeded expectations and is a real work of art. And lastly, what are you wearing right now? Something comfortable I hope… Lots of trackpants, and a cool hat from Culture Kings. It’s all about waking up and working out, having a shower, and then working on my laptop.
