THE WAY OF THE DRAGON BOAT THE PINKIES ARE BACK DIRECTED BY LISA BURD IN CINEMAS 18TH SEE MORE Two years after competing in, and doing well at the national Dragon Boating championships, the Pink Dragons are back to have a crack at the Auckland regionals in this uplifting documentary. Although the all-women team has a few veterans, most of the members are newbies, having never so much as touched a paddle. Mostly unfit, some overweight – and all breast cancer survivors – the women have no idea what they’ve got themselves into. Documentary filmmaker Lisa Burd ( Let's Talk About Sex ) follows them on an inspirational journey of discovery as they head into training with captain Annemarie Stevens and coach Sooupu Perese – determined to try to make their mark on the Auckland Dragon Boating scene. Along the way the charismatic crew of larger-than-life Kiwi women share the love and laughs – finding a sense of community, a new-found confidence, and a competitive edge they didn’t realise they had.

AINSLEYGARDINER COUSINS Since she first made her mark in the New Zealand film industry, Ainsley Gardiner has sought out stories by two groups who have often battled to be heard on screen: Ma¯ori and women. As a producer and director, she has most ably achieved exactly that, and in 2018 she was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for her work in film and television. Hélène Ravlich talks to her about her work. Her latest project soon to hit our screens is an astonishingly-moving adaptation of award- winning New Zealand author Patricia Grace’s novel Cousins . Co-directed with Briar Grace- Smith, it tells the story of three Ma¯ori women whose lives demonstrate that shared whaka- papa can never truly be cut, despite distance, time, and heartbreak. Respected New Zealand filmmaker MerataMita had planned to make her own film based on the novel after the author handed her a copy at a marae after its release in 1992. Despite having written an elegant and emotive script, Mita was unable to secure adequate funding to produce the movie before her untimely death in 2010. One of Gardiner and Grace-Smith’s mentors, Mita was a formidable presence in both women’s lives, and it’s apt that the film has finally come to fruition under their careful hands. When we talk, Gardiner tells me she has read Mita’s script and calls it “absolutely beautiful”, lamenting that a lack of understanding at the time about how to bring a multinarrative to the screen that had a passive protagonist who was both homeless and mute – and more importantly, Ma¯ori – meant it was overlooked. In 2021 funding bodies are better educated and audiences more comfortable with seeing our own stories told, and between Mita’s time and Gardiner and Grace-Smith’s, Gaylene Preston and Robin Laing also had a version of Cousins ultimately fall by the wayside. Gardiner says that the long gestation has meant that not only has the film been funded, “but two

identified most with Missy, and each became the spokesperson-meets-lead-director for their respective character’s segments of the film. The pair thought about bringing in a third direc- tor to be responsible for Makareta’s focus, but recognised it would be hard to add another el- ement to the mix. Grace-Smith is also in the film, playing the elder Makareta, a role originally to be filled by the late Nancy Brunning. “As time went on we saw she was becoming increasingly frail,” says Gardiner, “but we just couldn’t replace her, her mana was too great. Nancy, Briar, and Rachel (House, who plays the elder Missy), had come up together as actors, so Briar auditioned, stepped in, and did a great job.” As the pair observed children in schools around the country as part of the casting process, did they uncover any future stars? “Always,” says Gardiner with no hesitation, “it’s always such a wonderful part of the filmmaking process. We did it on Boy , and with some other short films, and it is amazing how much talent is out there. You’re spoiled for choice.” When she worked on Boy , the crewwere based on an East Coast marae, and Gardiner has said that she was determined to find a way of work- ing that suited people's families, and spouses and children were welcome. Was it the same with Cousins ? “Absolutely. It’s tikanga for us, an underlying way of working that is just natural for now. Life and art have no boundaries.” Gardiner had the full red carpet experience with short film Two Cars, One Night , when it was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 2005 Academy Awards. Does shemiss the ability to travel with her work, or has Covid allowed her to stop and breathe a little? “With Cousins it was a bit of a blessing to be honest, we got to spend more time on the film. “With a film like this with so many elements to put in place, we were really grateful to slow down.” COUSINS – IN CINEMAS 4TH SEE MORE

first- time feature film directors are co-directing it, which never would have got across the line almost twenty years ago”. One wonders: how does the co-directing pro- cess work – are both women on set all the time, or did each select elements they’d like to work with? “We actually found a really elegant way of doing it in the end,” explains Gardiner, who has workedwith different co-directors in the past “where personality and might win at the end of the day!” The ones that work well are often family who work together, as they have a long understanding of how the other communicates. She and Grace-Smith have had a great work- ing relationship over the years, and gradually learned each other’s artistic language. They worked on the script development and pre- production of Cousins for almost six years too, so by the time filming rolled around, they had high levels of trust in each other. The process came down to the three main pro- tagonists in the story, and who each identified with the most. They drew on personal experi- ences, characteristics, and understandings to infuse cousins Missy, Mata and Makareta with the spirit of the author, as well as their own journeys. “I identified with Mata because I was- n’t raised on a marae around wha¯nau,” says Gardiner. “I had a more middle class, pa¯keha¯ experience growing up inWellington, andMata’s sense of isolation from hapu¯, iwi, language, and culture was definitely felt by me.” Grace-Smith

SIX ANGRY WOMEN In 1984, Auckland university lecturer and playwright Mervyn Thompson was kidnapped, beaten, tortured, and left chained to a tree by six women who accused him of being a rapist. His abductors claimed that he’d actually raped “three or four” women, but no one laid a police complaint. Thompson was never charged with rape, but he suffered for his alleged crime. The women who assaulted him were never caught – their identities remain a mystery to this day. The incident was deeply divisive and triggered fierce debates about gender politics and vigilante justice around the country. Six Angry Women reopens the cold case over thirty-five years later and tries to find out who the women were – and what motivated them to take such unprecedented action. Using previously unseen archives and interviews with key players, many of whom have not spoken publicly before, this documentary explores the story behind one of the most sensational headlines of the 80s. MOTIVATION DETERMINATION INSPIRATION TRACY EDWARDS MBE With International Women's Day and the 36th America's Cup finals this month, VIEW's Hélène Ravlich took the opportunity to speak to Tracy Edwards, who, in 1989, successfully skippered Maiden and the first all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Race. Today, Tracy continues to inspire young women with The Maiden Factor, a global ambassador for the empowerment of girls through education. The Whitbread Round the World Race covers 33,000 miles and lasts nine months, and most thought that Maiden wouldn’t even finish the first leg. Do you remember how you felt when that first milestone was in the bag? Gutted that we hadn’t won! Everyone else was just so happy we were still alive. It made me realise the very real juxtaposition between our expectations and everyone elses. You also have to remember that, although not in the documentary, we did win our first ever race – the Route of Discovery Trans-Atlantic – so we had high expectations for ourselves. The press delivered perhaps even more vitriol than your male peers when you talked about taking to the ocean, what do you think they were most scared of? I think that genuine patriarchy existed then, and it exists now. There are men who really do believe that women are inferior, and should be treated as such with few rights and no voice. Even today they don’t seem to be particularly apologetic, how does that make you feel? I am sick to death of women and girls being treated like second-class citizens, not just in sailing or in sport but in all walks of life, media,

Does conquering the ocean still thrill you as much today as it did back then? Not so much conquering the ocean as chang- ing people’s minds about what women and girls are capable of. Sailing gave me a platform that gives me the opportunity to fight for equality. Someone asked me the other day what I would want my legacy to be, and I believe it should say: “She fought until her dying breath for equality”. Anything less will not be good enough. government, business and industry. That 50 per cent of the world’s population still has to fight for equal rights is unforgivable, but we fight on, and those of us with voices fight for women and girls without. Much of the footage in the film focuses on fighting the ‘boys clubs’ that surrounded the sport of ocean racing at the time. Is that still apparent today, for example with the America’s Cup? As exciting as the America’s Cup is, it has of course almost entirely reverted to being a ‘boys’ club’ and, sadly, comes across as extremely exclusive. It encapsulates every- thing that everyone outside sailing thinks it is. As sailors we enjoy watching the competition, but when women and the general public feel excluded from an element of sport, it’s a shame for that sport. Even after Maiden exceeded expectations, it was still often looked upon as pure luck. Do you hope that more eyes on the documentary will help change that? They said it was luck when we won the second leg, when we won the third leg and came second overall in our class, then it dawned on everyone that we could compete on a level playing field. Bob Fisher summed it up so well when he said “Not just a tin full of tarts. A tin full of smart, fast tarts!” I know we shouldn’t, but we loved that. People really did seem to change their minds – for a while. I was amazed to hear that Maiden is still currently sailing around the world, empowering and mentoring girls. Do you ever join the crew on any of the legs? Maiden visited New Zealand in 2018 whilst on her three-year world tour as a Global Ambas- sador for the Empowerment of Girls through Education. We are temporarily on hold until things are a bit more normal again, but we love The Maiden Factor project, and are pas- sionate about what we do, so we will keep going as long as it takes. I have been to some of the stopovers but haven’t done any legs yet. I am more than happy to run things from shore and keep everything going.

To celebrate International Women's Day on March 8th, Emma Clifton sits down with Carol Hirschfeld – broadcaster, journalist, advocate, executive – to discuss her thirty-plus years in the media world, and how it has changed for women in that time.

fine, I never want to be in front of the camera.’ I sawmyself very much as a backroom person.” But after 12 years at TVNZ, Carol moved to Me- diaworks in 1997, where she sat alongside John Campbell each night and delivered the TV3 News to the nation. Even then, she still kept her options open by also working as a producer for other shows. “For me, it was al- ways ‘Well, this presenting game... who knows? You never can rely on it!’” No matter the role, Carol says, there was al- ways the same clear aim: Can you tell a story? And can the person whose story it is trust you? “Knowing you’re actually dealing with people and these are people’s lives you’re talking about – and the trust that is involved with tak- ing care of people’s stories. That’s why it re- mains an incredibly important job – even though it’s got so hard to do these days.” In 2004, Carol and John left the news to start Campbell Live , with Carol as producer, but the toll of producing a 7pm show every night took a toll on her family life, and so Carol made the move to Ma¯ori Television in 2009 to become Head of Programming. Then it was on to Radio New Zealand in 2014 as Head of Content, and then Head of News. Then it was on to Radio New Zealand in 2014 as Head of Content, and then Head of News. When a young Carol Hirschfeld was in high school and considering what she wanted from the possible career paths that stretched be- fore her, she had just one request. “My great fear was that I’d end up in an office some- where, not having a very interesting life,” she chuckles. “With journalism, [it felt like] you could get up one day and not really know where you might end up in the afternoon. And that was very true!” With a broadcasting career that has spanned 30 years and seen her in prominent roles in nearly all of New Zealand’s media companies, Carol, 59, says it is still that nature of expecting the unexpected that fuels her love for working in news. Growing up with a dad who was a real news hound, she saw the impact that the headlines could have on people. “Journalism was something with real value for working peo- ple; it helped people make important deci- sions in their lives, and they relied on the information to be credible and accurate.” Her first role was at TVNZ, very much behind- the-scenes, as a sub-editor for Eyewitness News in 1985. In fact, it was such a behind-the-scenes role that her two bosses – whom she’s still close friends with – joked that it was never going to get her in front of the camera. “I said, ‘That’s

that she has been most excited about has been the slow but steady incorporation of Te Reo and a Ma¯ori perspective into our main- stream news. Carol is Nga¯ti Porou, from her mother’s side but after her mother died when Carol was 10, that part of her life remained somewhat unexplored, in the personal sense, until her time at Ma¯ori TV. “It brought me into Te Ao Ma¯ori; my professional life had never intersected with who I was, and what I needed to personally explore. It was hugely valuable to me at every level.” This year, Carol and her son Will (26), are embarking on a Te Reo journey together after signing up to learn the language. “I’ve done bits and pieces, but it’s an ongoing journey, and we’re going to learn together this year, which is really exciting.” Back when she was fronting the TV3 news, Carol’s own journey exploring her Ma¯ori heritage was an ongoing one, but she says she was very aware of how important it was for people to see a Ma¯ori woman on televi- sion. “Various people on the street would approach me and it always made me feel good. I remember being at the bank one day and the man helping me – I think he was Samoan – said ‘it is so good to see a brown person fronting our nightly news.’ I felt incredibly grateful for that comment,”she says. “You realise the power of being that person that someone can identify with and think to themselves, ‘If I wanted to, I could do that too!’ Because it wasn’t common then. And I wasn’t the first – but it certainly was unusual. If it was an oppor- tunity for other young, brown women to think ‘I could do something like that’, then I feel like I did something meaningful.” When it comes to watching the media be- come slowly more equal, in terms of genders, as well as slowly more diverse, Carol says zworking under Stuff’s Chief Executive Sinead Boucher is a true joy. “It’s extraordinary to see Sinead’s incredibly bold leadership over the last two years in particular. She’s an amazing inspiration and frankly, it’s a thrill to see some- one like her – a woman like her – lead the way for other media organisations about the reality of walking the walk and building a company that is true to the values you espouse.”

“Is the rest of the media there?” she asks. “I think it’s still very slow; it’s a grind in terms of getting women into those senior manage- ment positions. Maybe you can look at it in parallel to what’s happened with Te Reo – it certainly didn’t happen overnight, but it’s starting to happen.” Carol says the difference that more women and more diversity can bring to a workplace is immeasurable. “I truly believe you need diversity to form a strong fabric within whatever organisation you work in – and by that, I mean women and people from all sorts of diverse backgrounds, who bring a collective view about how they deal with a power structure. It’s very different to the individualistic, corpo- rate male approach.” She also cites Jacinda Ardern for having made a huge difference in how we see that power operate. “It’s an amazing time to be working in the media, to be honest, in what is happening globally, but also what is happening in our own country when it comes to those senior levels of power.” All through her career, Carol says, she was lucky to have really good male mentors as well who gave her the space to succeed. “What I’ve always felt is, in any work you’re in- volved in, don’t you want to help other peo- ple to fulfil their potential? People helped me fulfil mine and nothing gives me greater plea- sure then seeing it in others.” Part of her role in mentoring other women is “clearing some of that bullshit that gets in the way for women,” she says. “Women self-censor harder than men. And they think ‘I won’t be seen as the kind of person who could take that position’ – and it’s absolutely not true. Women bring different characteristics and qualities that make for a better workplace, and a better world.”

What have you been watching lately, while based in beautiful O¯ hope? Well I’m lucky enough to be a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which means I’m an Oscar voter. Being down here at the bottom of the world, and away from many of my compatriots in the film industry, it’s helping me stay connected; when I get a new link to watch [a submission], I still feel part of the community. I’m seeing what is being made internationally, the new stories being told. We’re down to the short list now and the other day I watched an incredible short film called The Hunger Ward , which moved me so greatly. I think it’ll win an Oscar, it really is the most affecting and beautiful film. It’s about the war in Yemen, told through the eyes of a hospital

ward where children are literally dying of hunger.
