THROUGH THE EYES OF OTHERS GUNDA DIRECTED BY VICTOR KOSSAKOVSKY For the most part, animals in movies are ‘atmospheric background’ or ‘supporting actors’ to human stars. Gunda offers us another way of looking at animals. The documentary is shot in black-and-white digital, with no music, voice-over, onscreen text – or people; sublimely beautiful, and profoundly moving, it offers us the opportunity to look at animals, and a rare chance to really see them. By removing humans from the picture, the director opens an intimate window – one that is most often left closed – onto the lives of various farm animals, magnifying the small, everyday moments in their pre-ordained existance. This immersive film takes its time in paying close attention to the lives of the eponymous ‘star’, a breeding sow named Gunda, her rambunctious piglets, a one-legged chicken, and a herd of cows. With careful observation, it presents a remarkable pig’s-eye view of the world – a quietly soul-stirring meditation on some of our most under-appreciated fellow earthlings. THE FATHER SIR ANTHONY HOPKINS ON THE WONDER OF MEMORY & THE FRAGILITY OF LIFE

I can see it’s tough on the people around you and watching Olivia’s reaction to the scenes when I’m flirting with the young lady (Imogen Poots) and then the turning of harshness on her and seeing her confusion – it’s awful, I felt so guilty playing the scenes! But it was a particu- larly vivid experience working on this film with Olivia and the rest of the cast. At my age, I’m not only astonished I’m still here but I’mmost for- tunate to be have been employed as an actor for many years, which has been the richest life I could ever dream of. Did you and Olivia Colman discuss the script before working together? There’s no acting required with Olivia. The great thing about it is the script. In any film or play that you’re doing, if you find a script as great as Florian Zeller and Christopher Hamp- ton’s, it’s a roadmap, so it’s not a big effort to do it when it’s really well written. The first day Olivia and I worked together it was actually the first scene of the film, although we did not shoot the film in chronological order. It’s a pretty simple scene, we did a little walk- through on the set with Florian and we didn’t rehearse. It was easy when you know the text so well. Learning the script for me is like putting on a jacket. Are you afraid of memory loss and do you consciously try to keep your memory active? Memory is a wonderful thing. I read a lot and I paint and I play the piano, I play five times a week and I am not a concert pianist, but it’s good exercise and I also memorise scripts. Being an actor is useful as you have to learn the script, that’s the one discipline I do preach to younger actors and I say that often to young

No-one apart from Sir Anthony Hopkins could have starred in The Father – because the entire screenplay, from the character’s name, to his date of birth, was written with the Welsh actor in mind. First-time filmmaker Florian Zeller co-wrote the screenplay, based on his own play, with Hopkins as the inspiration for the lead character, an independent and humorous man in his eighties who is increasingly confused, and lost within the confines of his own home. Despite the actor’s natural empathy for a man of his own age, the situation isn’t something he’s had to deal with. I haven’t seen the play, but I met Florian Zeller with the screenwriter Christopher Hampton. I’d read the script which I thought was excellent and I’d worked with Christopher before. We went and had breakfast in a hotel, and Florian was such a pleasant man and the script was so good. The only problem was I had another film to do called The Two Popes , so I said to Florian, as I knew this was an independent film and finance would be on a knife edge, I said, ‘will you wait?’ Florian said, ‘of course!’ I had the best time of my life making this film. I look back on it with great nostalgia. Had you seen the play The Father before, and how did you get involved? The part was written for you, Anthony. How personal does The Father feel? I’m 83, it’s not difficult for me to play an old guy even if I’m strong and fit. Neither of my parents suffered with dementia, althoughmy father had depression in the last year of his life, but I don’t really have close personal experience of it.

I REMEMBER ALL THE WAY BACK TO THE AGE OF THREE, I CAN REMEMBER LINES FROM PLAYS FROM MANYYEARS AGO. ONCE YOU LOSE YOUR MEMORY, IT MUST BE A LIVING HELL TO HAVE NO ANCHORS LEFT.

kids who want to improvise. I think learning lines keeps my brain going. I love to know my lines – to the extent that I would know them in my sleep, and that’s a good way to keep the brain healthy. And diet, eating healthily, and exercise helps. I’ve got a wonderful long-term memory, I remember all the way back to the age of three, I can remember speeches and lines from plays frommany years ago. Once you lose your memory, it must be a living hell to have no anchors left. It’s the most powerful and impor- tant tool, essential to survival. So – learning lines is your recommendation to every actor? It’s very important if you’re going on stage to do a play. For me, years ago I would concen- trate on the back story and not learn the lines. But now I find the trick is by memorising the lines, memorising every detail of the script, and then you have a tremendous feeling of relax- ation. You don’t have any tension, as long as you have the groundwork of knowing your lines, you’re free to do anything you want, you’re free to improvise within the structure. Tell me about your experience of making The Father . The set was wonderful, it was in a small studio outside North West London. And the lighting was extraordinary, it was that depressing after- noon light in a suburban house in London with shafts of sunlight. It all fed into my psyche. I didn’t take much notice of the background changing when Florian would point out the set changes. I wanted to play a normal human being making coffee, he comes into a room and he finds a ‘stranger’. I tried to avoid acting. It’s just simple questions such as ‘what are you doing? Who are you? What’s going on?’ That’s all that’s required. I think Florian is won- derful. Very simple and very direct. He was very easy and never dictatorial. Did making The Father help you find new meaning in your life? Yes. I think as you get older, you do go around examining life. This did make me think about

my past and my parents and about the sweet sadness of it all. I remember the last scene with OliviaWilliams when my ‘Anthony’ breaks down realising he’s lost his mum. We did the scene and it didn’t quite work at first, so we had a little break and I saw the chair on the set where Anthony used to sit and saw the picture of his two daughters and him in younger days, and as the camera pans outside at the end of the film, you see a pair of glasses and a book, and that really hit me. I remember taking my mum to the hospital to collect my Father’s things after he died. I remember looking at him lying there and his feet were cold, and it was almost 40 years ago. I thought tomyself, ‘you’re not so hot either, you’ll be there one day.’ And that’s the wonderful thing. Now that sounds weird to say, but it’s good to remember it’s all a dream, it’s all gone with the wind. I went to pick up my Father’s glasses and there was a little notebook and a map of America. I’d promised that one day, we’d drive across the States to LA. I remembered all of that in that final scene. It’s all so fragile, and that’s what I realise more and more now as I’m at that age. I’m aware of the fragility of life, but I enjoy it more. I have a laugh now, I like watching old guys on TV, like Sinatra. And they’ve all gone too, and there’s a great victory in recognising death and mortality while I’m here, and think- ing I’ve survived all these years. Sometimes I feel it’s as if I never wrote the story of my life at all, someone else did. I can’t ex- plain any of my existence here and I won’t go into religious or spiritual beliefs, but I do sense there’s something much more powerful be- yond which I will ever comprehend. I cannot explain time or ageing. Why do we start off as little helpless children and we become helpless at the end? All our achievements are gone. You think, ‘what’s it all about?’ but that’s the great stupendous glory of being alive is to reach an age, and you think, ‘well, it was worth it all the way.’ THE FATHER – IN CINEMAS 1ST  SEE MORE

TRIPPING THE LIGHT FANTASTIC DIRECTOR MICHAEL WINTERBOTTOM TALKS ABOUT HIS SERIES OF THE TRIP FILMS, AND HIS EXCELLENT ADVENTURES WITH STEVE & ROB. Why did you decide to go back for a fourth Trip movie? Basically, the temptation was there because it’s enjoyable, and because working with Steve Coogan & Rob Brydon – obviously – is a lot of fun. I get the chance to choose where I want to go and eat in the restaurants that I want to eat in, and while I’m doing that it’s always tempting to think, “Well, maybe just one more...” Why Greece? When you started, did you ever have a list of places you wanted to go? No. When I started to think about doing this one, my idea was it would be the last one, and so Greece always seemed the most likely place. I did think, at one moment, about maybe going to Scandinavia – somewhere dark and cold – but with Greece I realised that we’d have the natural route of Odysseus trying to get from Troy to Ithaca, to go back home. Besides that being a nice place to start thinking about what Steve and Rob could talk about, it also gave us the idea of someone going home, having been away for a long time. In the Odyssey, Odysseus’s son is looking for him, so the story cross-cuts between Odysseus trying to get back and his son looking for him. Obviously, we’d had quite a bit of Steve’s son in the previous Trip films as well, so it felt to me that that sense of going back to your family, going home, would be a useful reference point for the last one. A big part of the Trip movies is the impressions they do. What’s different this time round? From the beginning, I loved the idea of them doing impressions, because they’re quite competitive, and what I find appealing about it is not so much the impressions themselves but their competition over the impressions, the way it allows them to compete like children in playgrounds, in a kind of silly way but in a way that’s entertaining. It’s always been me who’s been most keen to try and push the impressions as much as possible, but I’d say they’re probably less central to this one than before. I don’t think there are any major new impressions. It’s never been something that we want them to do – to desperately try and learn some new people to do impressions of. They’ve done the same impressions for years, so it’s more about their rivalry over those impressions. Really on this one, I don’t think the impressions are as central as they once were. Having said that, when the conversation flags, I always just tell them to do a silly voice, and, hopefully, it will pick it up a bit.

What do you think this particular series has to say? Well, it reflects the fact I’m getting older, and Steve and Rob are getting older too. For me, it’s about a friendship. Obviously, part of the overall strategy of the thing is that they’re not really friends, they’re just thrown together in the first Trip and then they repeat it. It’s not like they’re best mates, but there is a sense of friendship. For me, it’s more about their view of the world – they each embody and articulate a different view of the world. The thing that’s good about working with Steve and Rob is that they’re the same age, they have very similar cultural backgrounds, and it’s very easy for them to talk about stuff. Quite arcane stuff that I don’t know about, popular culture that they both know a huge amount about. But they have very different views of the world, and how they want to be in it, and what they want to do with their lives and so on. It gives them a lot of material to play with. So, for me, between them, they articulate what most people have going on internally: there’s always a contradiction between wanting to be bold, and ambitious, and restless, and have new experiences, and wanting to be comfortable, and stay at home and be domestic. Is this definitely going to be the last one?Are you calling time? Yes. Soloists, duos and groups are vying for a place in the Top 24 – they’ll live, practice and perform together – and the final acts will release their singles, and perform to live audiences and music industry executives. Who will win the $100,000 prize and live their music dream? What is it that drew you to want to be part of Popstars? I was excited at the idea of mentorship and the focus on song writing. There are lots of things I wish I’d known when starting out in the industry, and I think it’s a gift to be able to share my experiences with upcoming artists. What are the main things you look for in an audition? Vocal prowess. Vision. What is in their eyes. What they have to say. Commitment to the performance. How do you think you, Nathan, and Vince will complement each other on the panel? I think we all bring a different perspective while also aligning fundamentally. We each value the same core principles that help create a ‘star’, but we are drawn to different aspects of a performer, and each have our own tastes which is very important, because these artists will have to face a lot of opinions in their careers. What kind of mentor are you? I’m a firm mentor, I will not say something I don’t mean, and I will say hard things if it pushes someone out of their comfort zone, because I think that’s integral to succeeding in this industry. But I do believe in being productive and encouraging. I am not interested in making anyone feel humiliated. It takes immense strength to get up and perform an original song, so I treat every artist with respect for that courage. What can viewers expect from the show? There’s a lot to relate to in the stories of these young people. Vince, Nathan, and I are also very open about our journeys. People will be impressed by the talent, no doubt, but my hope is they will take away something very truthful and relatable from watching these young people discover themselves through music. Andrew ‘Mulls’ Mulligan has been in broadcasting in New Zealand for over twenty years, starting back in his university days as host of Otago University's Cow TV . Over the years he worked his way up ANDREW MULLIGAN UPWITH THE PLAY

to SKY, where he currently hosts a weeknight sports show The Crowd Goes Wild . He has also been the live presenter/in-game match enhancement for All Blacks test matches played in New Zealand, and is the Sky Sport Commentator for the Breakers Basketball coverage. Mulls talks with Hélène Ravlich.

Coming up on Rialto Channel is the Legends of Sport documentary series, which features everything from motor racing to rugby, soccer and more. What’s your pick from the bunch? The one I’m really looking forward to is Diego Maradona , which looks incredible and apparently was made with the full support of the man himself.

What do you normally watch, when you’re back home and ready to relax? My wife and I try and watch various series on the SoHo Channel, but honestly? I just usually end up watching a lot of sport! I also love the ESPN 30 For

30 documentaries, some of those are surprisingly very good. I did watch The Undoing with my wife recently though; and was totally surprised that it was all the work of the

main character! I love anything with Olivia Colman, but those stories always come with some sort of twist – it is never the main character!

Do you ever get the chance to watch many films? I feel like they’ve been lacking a bit over the past year or so, plus we have a seven- year-old, so inevitably watch a lot of Star Wars and Marvel movies. As someone in the business of talking about sport, what are your favourite sports to watch – even when you’re off the clock? I absolutely love watching basketball, which is why I kind of made a career out of doing just that. I love the NBA and the NBL, it’s definitely my number one sport. I like to call rugby my “number one A” sport, because as a New Zealander you just have to love that. It’s written in our constitution! While Covid-19 has raged, some sports have faltered while others have found new ways to exist like the official NBA bubble. How do you think that has affected play? The bubble was really successful for the NBA, but they’re returning to their home arenas now, just without fans. Some states have dropped masks completely and will be back to full arenas in the next month or so as vaccination rolls out. I think it’s been tough, and they’re all over it. In general, sport has been really resilient through it all, but the financial ramifications will have been huge. And New Zealand players that have been separated from their families for months have definitely sacrificed a lot. Lastly, because part of this feature is “what are you wearing?”, is it true that TV presenters wear half a suit? With shorts on from the waist down? Absolutely! It blew my mind when I was young and saw Tom Bradley on television at a Telethon I think, and he stood up on One Network News and was wearing jeans!
