TRANSFORMATIVE EXPERIENCES

Jared Leto is standing on a sound stage in West London. All around him are walls of green screen that will later be filled with the sights of the Amazon rainforest. Behind him is a full-size helicopter while ahead stands the opening to a deep, dark cave. Mist hangs in the air. There is palpable tension. Leto’s character is about to make a life-altering move. He walks with crutches and inches one limb slowly ahead of another, his long hair hanging low around his shoulders and his body draped in a voluminous cape. “These bats have lived for 55 million years,” he murmurs as he edges towards the fissure in the rock, “humans a paltry 300,000. Truth is, they’ll outlive us all.” Leto is starring as the eponymous hero in Morbius , a superhero movie in the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel characters. His character’s full name is Dr. Michael Morbius, a celebrated New York scientist with a rare, incurable blood disease that is slowly killing him. Using the bats he captures in the cave he plans a rad- ical experiment that he hopes will cure his, and others’, affliction. However, the move will push ethical boundaries and, unbe- known to Morbius, will come at a terrible price. The experiment saves his life, and it also imbues him with special powers. But, from that moment forth, he will need fresh human plasma to survive. Others will have to die in order that he may live. “Michael Morbius is a guy who marches to the beat of his own drum,” begins Leto, 49, when we speak after the film has wrapped. “He is an iconoclast. He is a person who has had some validating success betting on himself and breaking the rules. And he is not afraid to do that in order to achieve his greater mission.” JARED LETO THE AWARD-WINNING ACTOR TALKS ABOUT PUSHING ETHICAL BOUNDARIES, NOBLE HEARTS, DARK TEMPTATIONS, AND HIS CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH MARVEL’S DR. MICHAEL MORBIUS.

2022 MARCH View 17

Leto has earned huge success with this fo- cused approach to his craft, from his turn as a heroin addict in Requiem for a Dream (2000) to his Academy Award-winning role in Dallas Buyers Club (2013). Playing Morbius, however, offered the actor a fresh opportunity. “It is rare that you get the chance to bring a character to life on the screen that hasn’t been played before,” he says. “That really piqued my curiosity. “It is a classic, superhero origin story although it is not so simple,” he adds. “These days we are ready for more nuanced superheroes. I think that it would be okay to call Morbius a “super- something”. He doesn’t necessarily fit the bill of a superhero in many ways. But he is a guy with a noble heart and really good intentions, and it is exciting to introduce the world to a super- hero 3.0. It has been a fascinating journey.” Morbius’s journey began in the Marvel comic books where he debuted as an antagonist in The Amazing Spider-Man #101 (Oct. 1971). Created by writer Roy Thomas and designed by artist Gil Kane, he went on to star in his own stories and the filmmakers have drawn from his many incarnations to create their movie. The movie slots into Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel characters, which features Spider-Man and Venom, though in this origin story Morbius will stand alone. Daniel Espinosa ( Easy Money , Safe House, Child 44 ) directs and the cast features former Dr. Who actor Matt Smith, who stars as Milo, a close friend of Morbius’s who becomes a dark temptation to the leading character. Tyrese Gibson and Al Madrigal, meanwhile, bring a dash of levity to the serious roles as FBI agents who track superhero activity. Although the film is dark in tone, Leto notes that the moments of levity are important and hopes that Morbius will surprise audiences. He has certainly poured heart and soul into his pursuit of the character; the actor is a diligent researcher of his roles. “I did as much as I could,” he explains. “Even though this is a fic- tional affliction, I still wanted to understand as much as I could. “I spent time with rare blood disease survivors and people with really unique rare diseases to try and understand what that challenge might be like. I wanted to do my best to ac- curately portray the character in his particular circumstances. “And, to be clear, this is Dr. Michael Morbius’s

race against time, to save not only his own life but also other people’s lives. That intense pursuit was something that moved the story in a really powerful way.” The actor’s preparation also embraced the physical as Morbius transforms from a dying man to a physically powerful super- human. “It was a physical challenge in a lot of ways,” continues Leto, “and certainly it had psychological challenges as well. I think that probably made it perfect for me as I am fascinated by those things – by physical transformation – and it is rare that you get that kind of experience in a film like this. “To see someone going from nearly dying to being in the best physical and most powerful shape they could ever be in is something completely unexpected.” For Leto, the most rewarding aspect of the role is the dichotomy that the transformation engenders in Morbius. He undoubtedly wants to do good in the world, but his newfound circumstances have engendered a set of mysterious new urges. “I loved that we could explore the darker corners of the uni- verse a little,” he concludes. “And I do love the grittiness and the rebelliousness and the darker nature of Morbius , the film. A FAVOUR FOR YOUR GRACE

IN 1961, KEMPTON BUNTON, A 60-YEAR-OLD TAXI DRIVER, STOLE GOYA’S PORTRAIT OF THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON FROM LONDON’S NATIONAL GALLERY. KEMPTON SENT RANSOM NOTES OFFERING TO RETURN THE PAINTING ON CONDITION THAT THE GOVERNMENT INVESTEDMORE IN CARE FOR THE ELDERLY – HE HAD LONG CAMPAIGNED FOR PENSIONERS TO RECEIVE FREE TELEVISION. WHAT HAPPENED NEXT BECAME THE STUFF OF LEGEND.

This is the surprising true story behind the taking of the Duke. In 1961, Francisco Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington was put up for auction at Sotheby’s. The New York collector, Charles Wrightsman, offered £140,000 (the equivalent of £3,000,000 today). However, the British government intervened in support of a matching offer to ensure the painting stayed in the UK. The painting was saved for the Nation and put on dis- play in the National Gallery. Nineteen days later the portrait became the first (and the only) painting to be stolen from the Gallery in its 196-year history. Kempton’s son, Jackie Bunton, saw the painting on the TV news. He was twenty-years-old, from a poor family in Newcastle, and was working as a taxi driver whilst dreaming of a better life. Hearing about the huge sum paid for the painting, Jackie was curious as to what all the fuss was about. He decided to travel to London to visit the National Gallery. He found the painting sitting on an easel behind a simple rope barrier. Standing in front of it, Jackie felt it was the closest he would ever get to real wealth. An idea started to form in his head. He’d read somewhere that insurance would pay out 10% of the value of a stolen painting as a reward for its safe return. Might this be his chance to make a better life for himself and his family? He picked up a map of the Gallery at the front desk and in- spected the layout. He placed a feather on the easel behind the painting and located the washrooms at the rear of the gallery. He placed tape over the lock of the washroom door and opened its window, over-looking a courtyard that con- tained building repair equipment (including several ladders).

ing out of its cumbersome frame and hid it under the bed. After the initial adrenalin rush, he started to panic: “It wasn’t planned prop- erly because when you do a thing like that, you don't think you're going to get away with it, and the further you go on you just make it up on the fly”. Not knowing what to do, Jackie called his 60- year-old father, Kempton, who took the train down to London. By the time he arrived, the stolen painting was headline news all over the world. Kempton ordered Jackie to go back to Newcastle and not breathe a word to any- one, especially his mother. Kempton would wait in London with the painting until things quietened down and it felt safe to bring it to Newcastle. Two weeks later he took the paint- ing up to Newcastle by train and boarded it up at the back of his bedroom cupboard. It remained there for the next four years. Born in 1904, Kempton was a charismatic dreamer. A man with a strong sense of right versus wrong, he was regularly in conflict with figures of authority, especially employers, find- ing it very difficult to hold down a job. That meant it was his wife, Dorothy, who was the main breadwinner, working for a pittance as

When he returned the following day, the feather and tape were still in place and the washroom window open. This confirmed that the painting was not moved at night and that the washroom door and window were not locked. He then needed to decide the best time to try to access the Gallery. He struck up a conversation with a security guard who in- nocently revealed that there was a security patrol every twenty minutes, and that the alarms were turned off when the cleaners were on duty in the early hours of the morning. That night, Jackie climbed onto a parking meter and hauled himself over the ten-foot perimeter wall and into the courtyard of the National Gallery. He climbed up a ladder, squeezed through the washroom window, crept through the gallery, and quickly grabbed the painting, returning the way he came. Outside the Gallery, he broke into and hot- wired a car, putting the painting on the back seat. As he was driving away, he was stopped by a policeman and reprimanded for driving the wrong way down a one-way street. He was let off with a caution, the painting in full view throughout. Back at his rented room, Jackie took the paint-

a cleaner. When their oldest child, Marian, died in a tragic cycling accident, the family was devastated. Kempton increasingly re- treated into his imaginary world and spent much of his time in the back-bedroom writing plays, which he would send to the broadcast- ers. None were accepted. His idealism had led him to be imprisoned for refusing to pay his television license; and to the loss of his job at a bakery for challenging a racist manager. Suddenly in possession of a stolen master- piece, Kempton felt that he finally had the means to get himself heard and do some good, whilst also protecting Jackie, the apple of his mother’s eye. He concocted a plan to write ransom notes, demanding that £140,000 be given to charity in return for the painting. He sent a number of these ransom notes to the press, but none of them were taken seri- ously: Scotland Yard was convinced that the theft was the work of the Mafia or some other organised criminal syndicate. When Kempton eventually sent the shipping ticket from the back of the painting, the police finally did be- lieve that these were communications from the real thief, but they had no idea where to

2022 MARCH View 23

start looking. The National Gallery offered a £5,000 reward for anyone who could assist with the identification of the thief and the return of the painting. But nobody came forward. In the meantime, Kempton went from job to job and continued his campaign for free TV licences for those that couldn’t afford them. Eventually the Daily Mirror newspaper publicly offered to make a deal with the thief – if the painting was returned, the Mirror would put it on public display to raise £30,000 for charita- ble causes. Kempton was tempted to accept – it was the best offer that he had received and he was also concerned that Pamela, the girlfriend of his older son, Kenny, suspected that the family had something to do with the theft. There was a risk she would go to the authorities to claim the reward. Kempton wrapped up the paint- ing in brown paper and had Jackie take it to Birmingham train station and deposit it in the Left Luggage. He then posted the Left Lug- gage ticket to the Daily Mirror . But once they had taken possession of the painting, they failed to live up to their side of the bargain. Kempton felt both betrayed by the working man’s newspaper and fearful of Pamela’s

next steps which risked implicating Jackie: “The dark hours of the night would find me awake wracking my brains in an effort to es- cape the trap of my own making... I made up my mind... I would go South and surrender”. In July 1965 Kempton walked into Scotland Yard and handed over a written statement, con- fessing to the crime. The handwriting of the statement and the note paper it was written on clearly matched that of the ransom notes. Kempton was indicted to appear at the Old Bailey on various charges, including theft of the painting and its frame. Jeremy Hutchinson QC (a distinguished barrister who had taken part in many famous cases including the obscenity trial over the publication of Lady Chatterley’s Lover ) had read about the case and thought it would be fun to defend Kemp- ton. Hutchinson decided on an ingenious way to mount his defense. The Larceny Act of 1916 provided that a person is guilty of theft if they take something for their own benefit with the intention of permanently depriving the owner. Kempton had earlier issued a statement that ‘I had no intention of keeping the painting or of depriving the nation permanently of it... My sole object in all this was to set up a charity to

24 View MARCH 2022

pay for television licences for old and poor people who seem to be neglected in our af- fluent society”. Kempton was personable and funny on the witness stand and he won over the jury and the attendant journalists. Hutchinson success- fully argued that if the law of larceny did not cover the temporary removal of pictures from galleries, then the law should be amended rather than an innocent man be convicted. Bunton was found not guilty of stealing the painting but he was found guilty of stealing the frame (because it was never recovered) – he was sentenced to three months in prison. It is interesting to note that during the trial, Pamela did turn up at the Old Bailey to claim the reward, saying that Jackie had stolen the painting rather than Kempton (pointing out the indisputable fact that Kempton as a corpulent sixty-year-old would not be able to fit through the washroom window of the Na- tional Gallery). However, the court felt that as they had a confession from Kempton and the trial was drawing to a close, it was not in the public interest to start all over again pursuing Kempton’s son. They dismissed Pamela’s alle- gation as a family squabble. As a direct consequence of the trial, the gov- ernment amended the Theft Act to make it a crime to remove an artwork from a gallery; and they demanded that security at the Nation’s museums and galleries be entirely overhauled. In 1969, four years after the trial, Jackie was pulled over by the police for driving a stolen vehicle. Wanting to get married to his girl-

friend, Irene, and believing that at some point his theft of the Goya would become public knowledge, he decided that he wanted his earlier crime to be taken into account so that he could serve his time and move on: “I just wanted to get on with my life and was tired of having it hanging over me. I didn’t want it to come up down the line and wanted it re- moved frommy father’s record, as he couldn’t get work. So, when I was arrested for another offence I decided to tell the truth.” However, the authorities realised that in order to retry the case with Jackie in the dock, they would have to rely on Kempton’s testimony, and he had clearly perjured himself at the first trial and was de facto an unreliable witness. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) therefore decided that it would not be in the public interest to re-open the trial, and instead proposed to drop the case on condition that Kempton and Jackie would never publicly dis- close the matter. It was not until 2012, that the DPP’s file on the theft of the Goya was released to the public by the National Archive. Later Jackie did marry Irene; he still lives in Newcastle. – Kempton Bunton died in 1976. His death went largely unreported. Free television licenses were eventually introduced in 2000 for the over 75s. THE DUKE – PREMIERES IN CINEMAS 31ST  CLICK TO SEE MORE

RIALTO CHANNEL – PREMIERES 8:30, SATURDAY 5TH  CLICK TO SEE MORE A woman escapes from her violently abusive husband with her two young daughters, only to find herself trapped in temporary state-funded hotel accommodation, taking cleaning jobs to survive. After months of struggling to re-build her life, she is inspired by the idea of self-building an affordable home. The spirit of the film is about self-help and self-empowerment – rather than passively and miserably withstanding callous bureaucracy, or just waiting for the next sickening display of abuse. The tough social-realist drama navigates a painful path, but, without being sentimental, is an unexpected heartwarmer. Co-written by, and starring, Clare Dunne. HERSELF
