Chaplain’s Corner

Light is a synonym of goodness and truth. Darkness is a synonym of evil and falsehood. Light and darkness are opposite, but not equal. A little candle can light a whole room full of darkness and will not be dimmed by it. Light is stronger than darkness; darkness cannot prevail against the light. I know several people who have been affected by age-related macular degeneration, my mother included. It is a frightening disease, mainly because it begins to take away one’s ability to remain independent and to do what you always loved to do. But I believe, too, that it affects one’s overall well-being because it gradually takes away the light, and the world starts closing in. The shadows are frightening, and it seems as if life is literally fading away. Through it all, we embrace the promises that Jesus will always provide us the spiritual light when we face difficult days. He colors our world, His gentle touch caresses and soothes us, and His light will never be diminished! With Jesus, it is summer solstice everyday! - Chaplain Mary Dewitt

Summer, beautiful summer! I believe we love summer for three primary reasons: 1. The colors of creation explode before us 2. The warm gentle breezes caress and soothe us 3. The long hours of daylight brighten our mood The summer solstice in the northern hemisphere occurs on June 21. It is the longest day of the year. In fact, in Alaska, they experience 22 hours of daylight! The sun goes to bed at midnight and gets up again at 2:30 am…they call it the Midnight Sun!! It is rather unique. But Jesus is the real unique Light of the World . “In Him was life, and that life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.” – John 1:4

Hallmark of Caring Rick VandenBerg We have been living in unprecedented times dealing with an unrelenting virus that continues to affect millions of people. It has dictated how we conduct ourselves and interact with others. If we let it, it could consume every ounce of our daily news intake. I, for one, think that we need to shift our focus toward something that is positive: our wonderful staff. Thankfully, working for Providence Life Services, we get to do just that through our Hallmark of Caring Program. It goes without saying that each one of our staff is more than worthy of this award, but it is narrowed down to 3 nominees chosen by their peers, our residents, and our residents’ families. At Royal Atrium Inn, those recipients for 2022 are Susan VanDyk, Yolanda Destura, and Reyna Morrison.

Meet Yolanda Destura. Yolanda is one of our Resident Assistants and has worked with us for 8 months. Yolanda was selected for her hardworking and caring spirit. She is someone who other staff look forward to being with and knowing that she is

there if they need help with something. Yolanda is someone who the residents look forward to having her care for them and who readily ask for her. She is a true blessing to be around. Meet Reyna Morrison.

Reyna is one of our Resident Assistant/ Med Techs and has worked for us for just over 4 months. Reyna was selected for her caring and compassionate spirit. She is highly dependable and gets

Meet Susan VanDyk. Susan is one of our receptionists and has worked at Royal Atrium Inn for just shy of 25 years. She was selected because she is a dependable and hard-working employee who always wears a smile

along with everyone she meets. She who has a wonderful personality, is kind, and is always willing to help others.

and greets everyone with a warm and caring attitude. She readily uses her talents to bless those around her and brings joy to everyone’s day, someone who is always willing to go above and beyond to help anyone out.

To celebrate this momentous occasion for Susan, Yolanda, and Reyna, we traveled to Chicago on Friday, June 10th, to spend the afternoon on the Anita Dee II, a yacht that took us sight-seeing along the skyline of the windy city. It was a terrific day. The weather was warm and sunny, and the sights were breathtaking. Not only did we get to mingle with other recipients of the Hallmark of Caring award, but we also had a delicious lunch, and we each got to meet with the CEO, COO, and VP of Operations for Providence Life Services and receive their personal thanks for carrying out the mission of PLS. As I reflect on day, I can’t help but be filled with incredible joy and happiness to be as blessed as I am to work with not only Susan, Yolanda, and Reyna, but with all of the staff at Royal Atrium. These are only a handful of shining examples of the work that goes on at Royal Atrium Inn daily.
