JULY 2022

VICTORIAN VILLAGE

Campus News

Senior Fitness: July is National Parks and Recreation Month! What a great transition from the “Great Outdoors” in June! Parks are at the center of so many experiences and memories. Our local parks are often our first experiences in nature, our introduction to a favorite hobby or physical activity. They are places to gather with friends and family, spaces to celebrate life’s special moments, and are spots of respite and healing. It is in our core as humans to connect with nature and the earth. We must ensure all people benefit from parks and open spaces that are not only resilient and regenerative, but also transformative at the community level. Visit a park near you this month and admire all it has to offer!

Congratulations to all our Victorian Village Hallmark of Caring Staff that were honored on June 10, 2022. This is an annual event and an opportunity to demonstrate our appreciation for staff that have done exceptional work. The staff was treated to a relaxing 3 hours of cruising the Chicago shoreline and a luncheon.

Chaplain’s Message America, The Beautiful!

Katherine Lee Bates came up from a hardscrabble childhood in Massachusetts. She had a lifelong interest in helping those who struggle to make ends meet. In her song for America, she included a prayer that America’s wealth and heritage of heroic sacrifices might be used for the common good. America! America! God shed his grace on thee, and crown thy good with brotherhood from sea to shining sea! In the Bible, we read how Jeremiah wrote a word from God for those living in exile: Work for the peace and prosperity of the city where I sent you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, for its welfare will determine your welfare” (Jeremiah 29:7, NLT). We pray for our country as we celebrate our independence. We pray that we and all people may be guided and blessed by God in our land, experiencing the gifts of liberty and justice for all. Chaplain Michael Kooy

In July 1893, Katherine Lee Bates traveled from her home in Massachusetts to Colorado and climbed Pikes Peak. At the top of the mountain, Bates was captivated by the beauty of what she saw around her. Looking to the east from the Colorado mountains, it seems like you can see all the way to Kansas, with its tawny brown fields of wheat waving in the wind. Turning, you see the spine of the Rocky Mountains arching northward. At dawn and at dusk, the low angled sunlight makes the rock look purple. She was inspired to write America, The Beautiful! O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain, for purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain!
