Life Enrichment Activities for Independent Living Residents
BIBLE STUDY WITH CHAPLAIN MARK Join Chaplain Mark for Bible Study on Monday mornings at 10am in the East Dining Room . BINGO Life Enrichment is excited to welcome one of our beloved volunteers, Raquel, back to Village Woods. She will be leading bingo two Wednesday evenings a month. Bingo will begin at 6:15pm in the Banquet Hall . Please note that this will replace the afternoon bingo session those days; another activity will be held in its place. Be sure to watch your weekly Grapevines for the weeks we will be having Wednesday evening bingo. BRAIN GAMES Join Life Enrichment for Brain Games a few times this month in the Banquet Hall. Watch your weekly Grapevines for specifics. CARDIO DRUMMING Cardio Drumming is a class that is geared towards exercising while drumming to music. It is a low- impact class that everyone can participate in. Cardio Drumming uses drumming to increase your heart rate while also being able to burn off a bunch of calories. The class is held on Wednesdays at 1:45 in the Banquet Hall . Feel free to reach out to Andrew in Well Being at ext. #1130 for more information!
FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION In celebration of The 4 th of July, Life Enrichment invites all residents to attend a patriotic sing-along. Come enjoy some beautiful music and a festive dessert. This gathering will take place on Friday, July 1,
at 2:00pm, in the Banquet Hall. For those who RSVP’d for the patriotic craft, we will begin our craft at approximately 3:00pm. Please note there will be no bingo this afternoon; instead, join Vicky on Monday, July 4 th , at 1:30pm for bingo.

MANICURE MONDAY Manicures for Independent Living residents will be held two Mondays this month. Please watch your weekly Grapevines for the dates, time, and location. All the supplies are provided by Life Enrichment. If you require your nails to be cut, Life Enrichment will try their best to arrange this with nursing.

TOURNAMENT WITH PPSJ: Independent Living residents are invited to attend our Wii Bowling outing to Park Place of St. John on Tuesday, July 19! We will leave Village Woods at 12:30pm; we will have our tournament followed by refreshments and fellowship. Residents who are on the Wii Bowling team need to RSVP for this outing and will be given priority . If you are not a part of the team and interested in attending to cheer on the team, we will add your name to a waitlist and will let you know if there are extra seats. There will be no cost for this outing. You must RSVP for this trip no later than Monday, July 18 th , to attend.

WELL-BEING All Independent Living residents are encouraged to join in on the many fitness opportunities available! In addition, if you need to schedule time to work out in the gym, please contact Andrew at ext. 1130. He would be happy to make the necessary arrangements.
Walking Class: Walking Class is for residents looking to build stamina and endurance. All residents are welcome. This class would be beneficial for all! Class will meet in the Banquet Hall Wednesday mornings at 10am . Weather permitting, we will walk outside when possible. Please contact Andrew in Well-Being at ext. 1130 with any questions.

Due to CDC and IDPH guidelines, residents who are not vaccinated will not be allowed to go on the outings. We will do our best to accommodate the needs of those residents. This outing will require a minimum of 3 residents.

and sacrifice for them in an extraordinary way, that’s what they are. Then there’s politics. While we may tend to see politics in a narrower frame (like the governing of a country, state, or municipality), politics—like religion—infiltrates every aspect of life. Think about it. Politics plays a role in all human relationships, in games, in organizations, in business, and even in an individual person! In the dictionary, there’s a simple but very accurate definition: “the art or science of governing.” Thus, politics plays a role in even an individual, meaning that “I” as an individual must govern and manage “me.” My time, my choices, what I eat, when and how I sleep, etc., are all part of the “politics” of managing and governing me. And from there, they spread out into all the people around me and then influence what I believe, how I live, and how I think and feel about every subject of life. And of course, this applies to you as well. Why does the general “rule” of not discussing politics or religion exist? Because these things are what divides us and are the greatest sources of conflict and have often led to strife, arguing, violence and warfare. But the truth is, we can’t avoid politics or religion. Being woven into the very fabric of our beings, they naturally play a dominant role in life. While we tend to automatically label “politics” as a bad thing (although it plays a role in our whole lives), politics generally is a very good thing! Without some form of politics, life would
“WE THE PEOPLE…” I grew up in a home where two things were never to be discussed: religion and politics. It’s possible that was a rule in your family home as well. Why? Well, of course, nothing has divided people like religion and politics. If you think about it more deeply, nearly every area of life involves some aspect of religion and/ or politics. Yep, we might try to come up with areas that seem devoid of these things, but when you connect the dots on a deeper level, I’d wager that religion and/or politics is playing some role. We might try an even deeper “why” question, like, “Why do religion and politics have such wide-spread roots or infiltrate basically every aspect of life?” If you ask me, I’d say, “Because these things are woven into the very fabric of our souls.” Take religion, for example. Every single person worships someone or something. Everyone places at least one thing (and generally more than one thing) on top of their priority list. Yes, it may be a god or gods. But it is often money, power, sexuality, justice, a sport, a habit, an addiction, a country, a cause…well, the list goes on and on. By worship, I mean they place that something(s) or someone(s) as the most important reasons for living and they give an extraordinary amount of time, talent, and energy into pursuing whatever that person or thing is. We may not label a sport or a country or these things as a god, but if we treasure and pursue

be filled with chaos, anarchy, lawlessness, corruption, and injustice. It’s much more accurate to state that there are “bad politics” and “good politics” and we should always pursue the good. The same holds true with religion. There is “bad religion” and “good religion.” What (or who) we worship or prioritize or give and sacrifice our greatest efforts and energies to should be what is most beneficial for other people (especially those who are demeaned, powerless, impoverished, censored, and/or incapable of caring for themselves in healthy ways), and then what is good for our self. As we celebrate the 4th of July, we should all be grateful for the kind of nation America’s founders attempted to create. First, the political framework contained “checks and balances” so that no division of our government could overpower the other divisions. Second, we can be grateful for a “Bill of Rights” that protects freedom of speech, freedom of religious expression, freedom to assemble to address concerns (without the fear of government oppression), where those arrested are both considered “innocent until proven guilty” and judged by a jury of their peers (as opposed to a police state or authoritarian or totalitarian powers). A few other freedoms are included. But all of these freedoms flow basically from the Declaration of Independence’s famous phrase, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
While we may grieve over the divisiveness our nation has experienced in recent years, let’s not forget that we all hold far more in common, and this should be the basis for all our relationships. There’s more than enough turmoil and conflict in the world in general, so let’s stress the unity and harmony we share as Americans. For those of us who are devoted followers of Jesus Christ, His “kingdom” (nation) basis is one of love, tolerance, patience, kindness, and sacrifice. Let’s remember that the greatest gift we all have been given is life. So, this July 4th let’s celebrate the gift of life God has given us and live in such a way that all Americans enjoy this gift as well. Sunday Church Services Residents are invited to tune in to Channel 4 on their apartment TV each Sunday at 10am and 7pm for an hour of worship. The rotation of church services includes: First Reformed Church of South Holland, Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Lansing, and Zion-Lutheran of Beecher.
