STAY GOLD THE OUTSIDERS: THE COMPLETE NOVEL DIRECTED BY FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA Re-release of the 1983 iconic coming-of-age drama that takes place in 1960s Oklahoma, centring on two rival teen gangs: The East-side ‘Greasers’ from the poor part of town, and the ‘Socs’ (Socials) the West-side rich kids. Ponyboy, a tender-hearted teenager’s life is changed forever one night when a scuffle with his friend Johnny inadvertently leads to the death of a rival gang member, and the boys are forced to go into hiding to avoid arrest. THE FIGHT OF HIS LIFE MARK HUNT very different lows, does he feel like life is start-

ing to go his way right now? “Yeah I do,” says the fighter, “I’ve recently separated from my wife (Julie, with whom he shares four children), but we’re still best friends, and I actually feel happier than I have in a long time. I’m 47 and I’ve had a pretty cool life, apart from the early part which was tough. I definitely don’t have much to complain about.” That is unless you consider his relationship with the UFC, which has been fraught with contro- versy for some time. Hunt has been an outspo- ken critic of the UFC's attitude towards doping, to the point where it has overshadowed the last few years of his career. Following his bout with Brock Lesnar in 2016, Hunt filed a lawsuit against the UFC, UFC president Dana White, and Lesnar, after the former heavyweight champion and WWE star was found to have failed multiple drug tests. “People say my motivation for the lawsuits is a money grab,” says Hunt, “but it’s quite the opposite. If I’d just been after the pay check I would have finished my contract and quietly gone away. But in my heart I knew I couldn’t do that.” The UFC’s anti-doping programme is overseen by the United States Anti-Doping Agency and Hunt acknowledges their testing system is world class. But it’s the UFC’s promotion of fighters, particularly big promotional draws, who have been caught using performance- enhancing drugs that turned him off the sport. “They’ve actually taken my love for fighting

After being plucked from an Auckland street fight and dropped into his first kickboxing bout, athlete Mark ‘The Super Samoan’ Hunt went on to achieve unprecedented success in Australian and New Zealand combat sports. In an ongoing career that has spanned the globe, Hunt has been in some of the UFC, Pride, and K-1's most memorable battles, fight- ing his own personal demons along the way. Hunt’s abusive childhood and troubled begin- nings gained wide-spread attention following the release of his autobiography, Born to Fight in 2015, and now, a documentary based on the book is set to reveal even more about the South Auckland-born sports star’s story of struggle and redemption. The internationally-respected fighter is currently based in Sydney, where he has been spending considerable time training for a future fight when we talk one late Friday afternoon. “I’ve been really enjoying it but it looks like that won’t happen now, as the organiser has just gone to jail,” he says, accompanied by a wry laugh. After a life of some true highs and some

When we talked, it was just days before the seemingly unstoppable Israel Adesanya was to successfully defend his title against Italian Marvin Vettori in UFC 263, a young fighter Hunt has watched come up in the ranks. Does he see Adesanya as the future of the sport? “He was the future of the sport before he was even a name,” says the veteran, “and it’s fighters like him that should be being paid more, and protected. You have to pay for training camp, for your team and travel, and that’s even before you take tax out of your pay check. You need to live on that until your next fight, so you need to take on more and more fights just to survive. It’s never ending and it’s dangerous.” Talk turns to the documentary about Hunt’s own journey, Mark Hunt: The Fight of His Life . The film highlights the child abuse at the hands of his father that over-shadowed his early life, and undoubtedly led to the devel- opment of his considerable survival instincts as an adult. Once again, does he feel like things would have been different if only someone had stepped in and stood up for him and his siblings? “My father was a piece of shit who was abused himself, just part of an endless cycle that thankfully stopped with us kids. He went to jail then got out and went back to his usual routine, and like the UFC, people didn’t say anything because they were scared.” Hunt adds that his early life experi- ence was one of the reasons he was com- pelled to write his auto-biography, the heart breaking Born to Fight . “I didn’t write that for the money because books don’t make any, I wrote it for the people out there like me who felt they had no hope. My dad wasn’t the only dirtbag back then and there’s still plenty around now, and Covid-19 lockdowns have only made things worse for family violence. away because of how they promote steroids and cheaters, how they’ve done it all,” Hunt told MMA UK. “They've pushed me out of the way to be honest, and that’s what's taken my love for fighting away.” He says going the easy route just wasn’t an option for him, and at the time of writing, Hunt says that at least one of the lawsuits is looking favourable for him and his legal team. “Ulti- mately I’d like to get both to trial so we can uncover exactly what has been going on in the UFC for many years, that’s my goal.” When watching the documentary Mark Hunt: The Fight of His Life , few names stick out as those willing to go on record in support of Hunt and his crusade. One is Ariel Helwani, a Canadian journalist who held special status with the UFC until his pre-emptive leaking of the appearance of Brock Lesnar at UFC 200, for which he was banned for life by UFC pres- ident Dana White. Does it frustrate Hunt that so many others associated with the sport are staying quiet on topics as important as anti- doping and fighters’ rights? “It’s frustrating for me because it’s nothing new, everyone out there knows what goes on. But change is coming, I know it is.” Key to Hunt’s mission is bringing what’s known as the ‘Ali Act’ to UFC, which will make a major difference to fighters’ lives in terms of safety and renumeration. Officially called the ‘Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act’, it is a U.S. federal law that came to pass May 26, 2000. It was brought about to halt widespread abuse (via exploitation, rigging of bouts, and unfair mismatches) against licensed boxers by promoters. The law covers various aspects, including: protection from coercive contracts; disclosure of fighter payment/contracts, and conflict of interests. “I don’t blame people for staying silent and I’m sure they have their own reasons, but I’m a fighter in life too and I just can’t let it lie. And I just hope no one dies in a fight because they are up against a drug cheat, because when we’re in there, we really are putting our lives on the line.” He says that doping in MMA is very different to say, the case of Lance Armstrong, “who is just pushing a bike up a hill, not endangering another life”.

WRITER HÉLÈNE RAVLICH DELVES INTO THE PROCESS OF PRODUCING FILMS UNDER THE SHADOW OF A PANDEMIC WITH THE INIMITABLE DESRAYARMSTRONG

The feature film debut of award-winning director and writer Michelle Savill, Millie Lies Low , is the story of a young woman growing up in Wellington in her twenties, and all of the angst that this entails. It is also filled with possibility and hope, even after anxiety-ridden Millie (Ana Scotney) misses her flight to New York for an internship at a prestigious architecture firm. A deep sense of shame prevents her from ’fessing up to friends and family, so instead, she lies low in her hometown in order to scrounge for another ticket, using her wits and Instagram to convince the world at large that she’s living the dream in the Big Apple. Producer Desray Armstrong was the considerable talent responsible for bringing the whole thing together, and is more than qualified for the job. Aside from producing feature films such as Juniper (premiering in cinemas this month), and the very recently released Coming Home in the Dark , as well as short films and TV programmes, she has also been a production manager or production coordinator on a run of international projects like Slow West and Mortal Engines , to Kiwi stories like What We Do in the Shadow s. Awarded Woman to Watch at the 2016 Women in Film & Television Awards, in 2018 Armstrong produced her debut feature film, the acclaimed romance Stray . Talking to the producer at home in Wellington, we discuss the latest level changes outlined by the government as a result of Covid-19. In Auckland, I’m looking forward to eating something that hasn’t been prepared in my kitchen, whilst Armstrong likens her role as a producer right now to “being in level four while I get a film sorted out. I’m tied to my laptop and haven’t

even had time to get takeaways, so I’m kind of in solidarity with my Auckland mates!” Millie Lies Low – premiering at the NZ Interna- tional Film Festival – was also filmed under challenging circumstances at the beginning of the pandemic. “We started shooting in early March of last year,” Armstrong explains, “and my producing partner and I made the decision to shut down production on the fourth day, which was pretty upsetting for everyone involved”. They couldn’t deny that Covid was on its way, “and as it was quite a low budget film, we were filming a lot of scenes outside in amongst the Wellington public. We couldn’t work within the constraints that the Ministry of Health were recommending at the time, so it seemed the best thing to do. Nevertheless, it was pretty bloody devastating.” Further complications included the fact that two Millie Lies Low cast members had recently travelled from Australia and suddenly had to self-isolate, and that the story dealt with over- seas travel necessitating filming in airports. “We were running out of options and back-up plans and didn’t want to compromise the film,” explains the producer, but after six months or so of uncertainty, they got there in the end. “I think it’s one of the main reasons we are just so proud of the film – not only is it a creative endeavour by a very talented film- maker, but it came together because of the tenacity of a group of people who really cared about it.” This included the entire cast, who may have been tempted by roles locally and overseas, but chose to stick with Millie Lies Low and make it the very special film it is. Australian actor, Sam Cotton, played a role that required just five days on set, but he was willing to complete two weeks in quarantine on either side of that in order to be a part of the film. “I’ve definitely got all the feels about the peo- ple that helped make the film happen,” says

Armstrong, whose job is already one associated with constant trouble shooting, pandemic or not. “We plan for a hundred scenarios and then just cross our fingers they won’t come true,” she laughs, adding “everything in film is so uncertain, even at the best of times; it’s just the nature of the beast.” Moving forward, we may be looking at films with hundreds of extras and multiple locations with rather a different eye, potentially placing them in the ‘too hard basket’ as a result. NEALE WHITAKER THE INTERIOR DESIGNER AND CO-HOST OF THREE’S LOVE IT OR LIST IT AUSTRALIA TALKS TO WRITER HÉLÈNE RAVLICH ABOUT THE PANDEMIC’S EFFECT ON LIFE – AND ON STYLE. Interior style guru Neale Whitaker knows a thing or two about making the most of your space at a time when your whole life revolves around your home. In 1999, the respected media personality moved to Sydney from the UK, editing directional interiors magazine, Marie Claire Lifestyle , before going on to helm Vogue Entertaining + Travel ; interior design bible Belle , and Vogue Living. He moved into the role of Editor-At-Large in 2017, to allow time for his increasing television and wider media com- mitments. These included joining the hugely popular Love It or List It Australia , as co-Host with property guru, Andrew Winter. With the fourth series soon to air in New Zealand, Whitaker – like many of us – is currently locked down at home. He and his partner and their dogs live in Berry, a village in the Shoalhaven region about two hours’ south of Sydney. Naturally, Whitaker’s home office is several levels above most in terms of style, and comes with a stunning view. “It’s in what would have been a very small bedroom,” he says, “but I transformed it into a great study-meets-home office with views across rolling paddocks – I’m really very lucky.” When asked for any tips on how to handle the current situation, he says that if you are lucky enough to have space, change it to meet a new set of needs. “In this prolonged situation that we’re all living through,” he says, “and with people working from home for much longer than ever before (if not permanently), it’s so important that we develop a dedicated workspace if we can.” He harks back to the days of just propping up with your

nitely seen it coming through online,” says Whitaker, “especially the home office element we were discussing previously. I think the way we are living now is going to dictate the way that we use space in the future, and I'm read- ing a lot about the move away from open plan.. For over thirty years the open plan home layout has been king, taking out walls whether we’re renovating an older place or planning a new build. Covid-19 has changed that.” There is an ever-increasing need now for delineation in our homes, a demand for private zones that we haven’t needed in a very long time. “Floor plans will change – whether we go back to the old way of smaller rooms, or see a greater use of sliding partitions and the like. Covid-19 will change the way our houses flow.” The new series of Love It or List It Australia was also drama-tically affected by the pandemic, with Whitaker and his team filming under bor- der closures and taking a year to complete a series that would usually take just a few short months. “We were really thwarted by an in- ability to travel and it was a frustratingly slow process, but I do take my hat off to the tenac- ity and dedication of our amazing producers and our homeowners”. Whitaker goes on to say that the homeowners were more than will- ing to come on the whole journey with the team, “and that has probably resulted in the best ten episodes we’ve ever made”. When asked if he has a standout memory from his time filming series four, the style superstar says: “Hunters Hill definitely provided a great deal of merriment, and working with Andrew Winter is always fun as you never quite know what he’s going to pull out of his bag!”. He also speaks in hushed tones of an episode in which “Kylie Minogue’s gold hotpants make an appearance... but I’ll leave that with you”. As we close our conversation, talk turns to travel, and where in the world he would most like to wake up if the pandemic were no longer an issue. “If I could just stick a pin in a map and go anywhere now, it would have to be the Greek Islands, watching the sunset with a glass of wine, Greek salad and octopus. Now it’s almost a necessity to find a place within the home that gives you some kind of privacy, and where you can draw the line between normal home life and work life.” He stresses that not all of us have that luxury, “but if you have a spare bedroom or nook that can be closed off, it’s a good time to think about converting it permanently into a home study”. He says creating a “barrier” of sorts between your workspace and the rest of your home is hugely beneficial, “a delineation or door you can close. My office is right next to the kitchen for example, but there is an almost a ritual element when I come into the space and open the shutters, and sit down at my desk with a cup of coffee. In the evenings I’m very strict about closing the shutters, turn- ing off the light and leaving by 6pm, and I don’t come back until the next day”. He adds, “if you can establish a routine like that it’s just so much easier to navigate this new way of work and life that we’re all living through. It’s too easy to blur the lines between personal and work life, and even day and night, and I make a point of never just rolling into my office in my UGG boots and what I wore to bed.” We both agree that in uncertain times, personal rituals can be so important, “and I can’t start work until I’ve had a shower and a walk, fed the dogs and made my coffee. These daily habits are more essential than ever”. The interiors specialist has gone on record as saying that Covid-19 may result in significant changes for interior design. Has he seen that coming through internationally? “I have defi-
