2019 Christmas Island Style Boat Parade

The Annual Marco Island Christmas Island Style Boat Parade was held on Saturday, December 21. MIYC hosted a dinner for more than 250 Members and guests with dining in the Harbour Room, Dockside Lounge and Burgee Bar. Ellie Everitt was the point person from the Member Events team in charge of the evening's organization. Her team of volunteers took shifts to greet attendees as they arrived and directed them to their proper destination. The Boat Parade began at 6:00 by Pier 81. Boats circled Factory Bay and then cruised by the Yacht Club around 6:15. There were twenty-six boats decorated for the holiday parade, the greatest turnout since it’s inception. After circling by the Club, the boats headed to Smokehouse Bay and the Esplanade. Judging was done in front of the Snook Inn. Peggy and Pete Frazier proudly entered the Pelican in the line-up with Santa Claus greeting fans with his Ho Ho Ho along the parade route. Pete even did a pirouette in front of the Snook. The parade ended around 8:30. Each guest was assigned to a table which was their table for the evening. Guests viewed the parade outside and then returned to their table for their meal. The Club sponsored a raffle for the Marco Island Patriots with two prizes for guests, a Trial Membership at the MIYC and a sunset beach photo shoot donated by artist Joey Waves. It was a well planned effort by the MIYC Staff and Member Events.

Members Decorated for the Chri stmas Boat Parade While the Club was bursting at the seams with Merry, Jon and Angela Holt invited Santa and Mrs. Claus to ride aboard Pelican (left) for the parade. With over 25 boats participating, the water was awash with Holiday Spirits. The Fraziers and Hughes (below left) represented the MIYC in the parade and all of the boats deserved kudos for creativity and the hard work decorating.

Boca Grande is like Palm Beach without the bling! Boca Grande Marina is tucked in near the entrance to Gasparilla Island just north of the Boca Grande pass. On our cruises we enjoy touring the island on golf carts, checking out the unique shops, and the famous Boca Grande Lighthouse Museum. The marina has full service, plus free wi-fi Internet, BBQ grills, a picnic area, shower and laundry facilities, and a pump-out station. On the 20th we will depart for South Seas Resort on Captiva Island , a resort and wildlife sanctuary with boundless opportunities for adventure and relaxation. The South Seas Marina dockage includes full access to all of the many resort amenities including pools for Aquafit. There is a 9 hole golf course and a resort trolley that takes you around the property and to the quaint shops of Captiva. On this cruise we will be visiting the infamous Cabbage Keys for lunch where the walls are covered with money! Plans also include the day on Useppa Island - an exclusive private island club with picturesque white cottages, pink pathways and lush tropical vegetation where we will have lunch at the exclusive Barron Collier Inn. Our visit to Tween Waters will be for dinner and the Crab Race Event. Your host, Commissioner Tim, sounds the kazoo, lifts the custom crab starting gate, fires his trusty squirt gun and they're off! You will be on the edge of your seat cheering. It is the stupidest thing you've ever seen but you'll be laughing and a little competition? Well that sounds like MIYC! And a chocolate kiss drink from the bar? Love it! There are many room options at the resort for boaters who wish to sleep ashore as well as land cruisers. Land cruisers can travel to the destination aboard one the of boats or drive. Trips like this one epitomize what MIYC is all about...great camaraderie, new friends, great food, and opportunity to share our love of boating. All full Members are invited to join the fun and to put life and laughter into your time on the water. Boater's Night Wednesday, January 15th

Anticipation is building for the MIYC 2020 Cruise to the Exumas! As the New Year dawns, it is not too soon to begin detailed planning and preparation for this extended cruise. Even if you are not actually going on the Exuma’s Cruise, we have a Boater’s Night for January designed to put you right in the picture, with not one (or 2), but three great contributors to the evening’s program. First up will be Captain Bill Schroeder, who will be our pathfinder and on-the-water guide for the big trip. Bill is the veteran of many a passage across the Gulf Stream, and he has an intimate acquaintance with the Bahamas developed over years on Caribbean waters in both sailing and motor craft. Bill has also seen pretty much every cove, beach, landing-place and marina in the Out Islands, and has selflessly invested countless hours over the years on a mission to check out and taste-test most of the watering- holes and dining establishments in the Islands just for us (OK, maybe he wasn’t doing it just for us at the time, but now we definitely have the benefit of his experience!). Bill will brief us on what to expect on the Cruise, how to prepare (both boats & crew), and an expert’s insight into the real Bahamas. A vital feature of this Boater’s Night will be a Tabletop Display by Linda Spell (MIYC’s First Lady, wife of Commodore Ray Rosenberg) about how to provision your boat for an extended cruise. Linda has years of experience as a cruiser on at least two or three oceans, and her innovative and highly practical galley ideas have brought her praise and thanks from sailors everywhere, including Cruising World Magazine, in which her ideas were featured. Come see firsthand how to make your galley more functional, more comfortable, and more fun! Rounding out the program, we will hear from our own MIYC Fleet Surgeon, Dr. Dave Randall, who will prescribe best practices for on-board first aid kits, handling and procuring medications overseas, planning for special medical needs, dealing with medical issues while afloat, guides to shipboard good health, and more. MIYC is one of the few yacht clubs in Florida that can boast of having a Fleet Surgeon, and we are indeed fortunate to have the insight and sage advice of an experienced physician who is also an experienced boater (and pilot) as well. This Boater’s Night will be a DON’T MISS for all Exumas Cruisers, and a MUST GO for anyone interested in the Bahamas, a more useful and comfortable galley, or better health afloat. See you there! Tom Wentworth, Rear Commodore Make your reservation now Please - Chef requests all reservations be called in no later than the Sunday before so he can order the correct amount of food. Call 239-394-0199 x301 to make your Boater's Night reservation!

Noon Bridge

If you are like me, you remember learning to play bridge in college and then there was the “social” bridge at night or on a lucky day when you could get time off from your busy schedule. Then came an even busier time in my life with work, so many kid’s activities, and bridge went by the wayside. Well, it is time to get back in the swing of it. If you play bridge, have ever played bridge, or even want to learn how to play bridge, MIYC is the place to do it. We have a very lively group of “social” bridge players. New Members are most welcome! There is no pressure to remember everything about the game and there are willing teachers to help you remember and learn. We play every Wednesday at noon if there are at least four of us available to play. Chef Bob serves us an amazing “surprise” lunch before we begin play. Call or e-mail me at: 239-389-0825 [email protected]

Mah Jongg anyone? Thursdays - 1PM

Whether you're a newbie or an experienced player, you are welcome to join our new Mah Jongg group! We're kicking off this Thursday, starting with lunch at the Club at noon, and playing right after. (You can come for both lunch and play, or just to play.) RSVP now , if you'd like to play Mah Jongg. Let Karena know if you're available to play this Thursday or if you'd just like to be put on the email list for future play. Contact Karena: Voice or text @ 239-771-0888 email [email protected]

Marco Island Yacht Club collects Toys for Tots at its Holiday Celebration Toys for Tots was the focus of the Marco Island Yacht Club Holiday Party on December 7. Club Members purchased gifts and brought them to the event to fill the Toys for Tots collection boxes. Members who could not attend the event donated over $2,000 towards the purchase of additional toys to support the collection efforts. Santa was on hand to thank everyone who contributed the toys that overflowed the collection boxes. Partygoers enjoyed a special holiday meal and were entertained by Yacht Club Members Linda and Alan Sandlin (right), who performed holiday songs and led a sing-a-long. The Toys for Tots collection is just one part of the Marco

Island Yacht Club’s Community Outreach efforts. Club Members donate to Our Daily Bread Food Pantry during the holidays and throughout the year. The Yacht Club also supports the Marco Island Community Sailing Center.

MIYC Operations

First, I want to say thank-you to everyone who helped decorate the Club this year. What a fantastic job; the Club never looked better. A huge thank-you to Ellie Everitt for coordinating this well-organized event. We had some exceptional events in December with record attendance. The Member Holiday Party, I think they all attended just to see the decorations. The Boat Parade came close to being cancelled but the rain and winds held off and we had approximately 26 beautifully decorated boats pass by the Yacht Club. We had over 250 people who came to view the Boat Parade and have dinner; turned out to be a great night. We also had 150+ members, families and guests attend Christmas Eve dinner and it looks like we will be maxed out for New Year’s Eve as well. Well that wraps up the first quarter of our new fiscal year. I must add we had an outstanding first quarter. Check out the January calendar, it is packed with terrific events so be sure to make your reservations early.

Robert J DeFeo

Everyone knows how busy it gets in season and this year is even going to be busier. I cannot stress enough how important it is to make your reservations early. It will help us with ordering, planning and scheduling the appropriate kitchen and front-end staff to provide the best possible service. Please refer to Club Rules, “Reservations and Cancellations”. The Burgee Bar Officially Opens on Saturday January 11 th with Happy Hour, an outstanding buffet and Karaoke. Starting January 15 th , the Club will be open for lunch (11:30-2:00) and dinner (5:30-8:00) Wednesday through Saturday and Sunday Brunch (10:00-2:00). Our Grand Sunday Brunch is scheduled for January 26 th . The Burgee Bar will also be open Wednesday through Saturday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM starting January 15 th . Wish everyone a very Happy and successful New Year. Look forward to seeing you at the Club, Robert J DeFeo

MIYC Fishing Club Thursday, January 16 th 11:30am Equity and Full Members welcome. Please call the Club for Reservations 239-394-0199 In the month of December, fishing offshore was surprisingly good. Tom Morrison proved the point several times by taking Infinity fifty miles offshore to catch limits of red grouper and many monster barracuda. Backwater fishing

was also strong with many anglers catching snook, sea trout, sheep’s head, triple tail and an occasional redfish. The key to fishing backwater right now is to find clean water. The red tide is taking its toll along the beaches from Cape Romano to Sanibel. If you can find birds feeding along the shore and backwater, you will likely find bait fish and game fish. In late January, the Fishing Club will be heading to Islamorada, Florida for our first “Thriller in the Big Pond”. Six Members will head over to Islamorada to fish off-shore for black fin tuna, wahoo and sailfish. In February, some Members who do the extended cruise to Boca Grande will also squeeze in some fishing for redfish and snook. In March, those that go on the Bahamas Extended Cruise will likely hook up with some monster wahoo and permit. The Fishing Club will have its next luncheon on Thursday at 11:30am on the Burgee Bar. At the luncheon, we will discuss current fishing near Marco and long range plans for our annual tarpon fishing trips to the middle keys.

A very Happy New Year to one and all. Where did 2019 go? It seems like only yesterday that we installed Jeff and his Bridge to their positions, and that leadership team should feel very proud of all of last year’s accomplishments. Marco Island Yacht Club is on track for 2020 to be a fun and exciting year. I hope to see all of you at the Commodores Ball on January 18. The Ball marks the symbolic Change of Watch for the club. Another event with historic significance is the Blessing of the Fleet on February 15. Of course, in between are a myriad of other activities and events, with something for everyone. Check out the club calendar on the website. A great emphasis this year continues to be on boating activities. Day cruises, Sunset Cruises, Boaters’ Night, Extended Cruises and the Fishing Club. Extended cruises continue to be popular with our ever-expanding cruising fleet, both sea and land cruisers. Our Florida Keys Extended Cruise last year drew a dozen boats and over 50 people. What a fun time we had! Many of our newer members had great cruising boats when they joined, and several seasoned

members bought new boats for more comfortable c r u i s i n g . I f y o u ’ r e c o n s i d e r i n g a b o a t purchase, don’t hesitate. It’s an investment in fun and exciting adventures near and far. And, after all, most of us do live on an island!

Your Boating Committee a l so has a j am- packed schedule for 2020, so keep tabs on it and participate. Lastly future plans may include an extended river or offshore cruise in 2021. Stay tuned for details. Hope to see you on the water. Ray Rosenberg Commodore

MIYC Member Events By Angela Holt

December at the Yacht Club signals that Member Events is in high gear. The month started with Deck the Halls where Members convened to beautify the club in holiday fashion. It was non -stop from there starting with the Ugly Christmas Sweater contest, followed by the Holiday Dinner Party coupled with Santa, the Sandlins entertaining and Toys for Tots presentation, the Dock Party Stay-cation, and the Street Parade. It should also be noted that the Toys for Tots collection this year garnered more than $2,000 for the purchase of toys in addition to toys brought to the club by members. The Boat Parade was again a great success as w e u s e d t h e p r o v e n f o r m u l a o f organization. Members were seated n Dockside and the public were seated in the Harbour Room. More than 200 people attended making the event a sell out. Christmas Eve complete with Santa, stockings for the children and photos was as charming as ever. And, New Year's Eve dinner served in two seatings with a midnight photo of those in attendance and top-notch entertainment by Classics II ended 2019 in style. Looking forward to January, we start the year with a White Elephant gift exchange on January 3

during Happy Hour. On J a n u a r y 11 , w e w i l l celebrate the opening of the Burgee Bar with an evening of song and karaoke. This month we dress to the nines for the Commodore's Ball. And, we will have the c h a n c e t o v i e w o u r Members' artistic abilities at the Art Gallery on January 25. 2019 has been a good

Chairman’s Report

With the turn of a calendar page, 2019 is consigned to history and another new year begins. For all of us, this is a time of reflection and of looking forward with anticipation and hope. And the same is true for our Club! The past year saw a number of activities and accomplishments at the Club. We finished our fiscal year with very strong operational earnings. Member experience was another positive for the year. We continued to grow our membership levels. Member engagement in our activities continues to strengthen our Club. The coming year we anticipate beginning construction of the Riverside Marina. Our event calendar if full. And we expect another year of strong financial performance. Our continued strong operating performance enabled the Club to convert our member financed mortgage to a commercial mortgage with our bank. We were able to close on the mortgage just before Christmas and issue payments to those members who invested in the mortgage. I personally will be eternally appreciative of those members who helped finance the Club during our return to financial stability. Going forward, we have a mortgage with favorable terms and a line of credit to address unexpected emergencies. As we do every year, the Club hosted an Employee Christmas Party in December. Employees and their families gather to share food and some holiday cheer. Ellie and I along with Operations and HR Chairman Bob DeFeo and his wife Dale participated in the activities. We were able to pass out Christmas Bonus envelopes and tell the employees how much we appreciate their support and commitment to the Club. The employees also presented the Club with a flat screen TV with special capabilities which will be hung in the Bridge Room. It will support meetings and be able to show artwork and videos

a t f unc t i ons . Once again, let me ask that you make sure to say ‘Thank you’ to our Staff; not only for their gift but for helping us create an enjoyable and satisfying club environment. With the coming y e a r , w e w i l l b e conducting our annual ‘buy up’ campaign for Social Members. We are providing Social Members access to

an on-water event in February to let them experience the camaraderie and fun these events provide. This is a great time to step up to Full Membership, and if you have been considering doing so…now is the time! Be sure to talk to Cynthia in Membership for details. There will be a lot of activity in 2020 year related to the marina project. We will ramp up slip sales activity in January. We will have a ‘town hall’ for neighbors and other interested parties in January to communicate our plans. And we should begin work on the seawall upgrade in May. Look for more updates as we shift from planning to execution of this project. The event calendar for January is really full! There are boat trips to Naples and the Commodore’s Ball. Special interest groups like the Fishing Club, Twilight Golf, the Book Club, and Couples Bridge provide an opportunity for nearly every member to find something to enjoy. And, the Burgee Bar re-opens for lunch in January. And, the Ship’s Store is fully stocked! Be sure to take advantage of all your Club has to offer! Dave Everitt - Chairman

Enhancements to your Equity Membership

We have some really exciting news for Equity members. First, many of you have asked to have some form of recognition for being an Equity member. Your Membership Committee working with the Board of Directors has subtly redesigned the Equity name badge adding a line showing that you are an Equity Member. If you would like to have your name badge replaced, please send an email to Cynthia Hultquist at [email protected] showing how you would like your name to read on the new badge. You will then exchange your former badge for the new badge. Also, you may remember that the wine bin program was modified so that only Equity members are allowed to have bins on the property. Below are the instructions for the new program. Wine Bin Program The Wine Bin Program is for Equity Members only. The wine is stored in our temperature-controlled cabinets. Red wines are stored at a temperature between 58-62 degrees and white wines are stored at a temperature between 48-52 degrees. An Equity Member can have one free wine bin either red or white that holds two standard 750ml bottles of wine. • Additional wine bins may be rented for one year at $50 per bin. • The corkage fee is $10 per bottle. • You may restock your bin as many times as you want. • Your name will be placed on the bin. • Only authorized staff will be allowed to stock the bins or withdraw the wine when requested. • Members are not allowed to access the wine cabinets. • If you want to use a bottle of wine on a Friday Evening, please order it in advance when you make your reservation so that your server can have it available for you. • Wine Bin Procedures An Equity Member who would like to participate in the wine bin program should e-mail the Front of House Manager at [email protected] with the following information. • Requesting use of your free wine bin please provide your name, member number and whether you would like a red or white wine bin. • If you are renting an additional wine bin, please provide the same information as above. Your account will be charged the appropriate amount. • Your wine bottles must have your name attached. Bring them in only to Pam Dorr, Tina Carano, Nicolas Fournier or Cynthia Hultquist. • A log will be kept on all wine bins.

Bob Aylwin - Manager/Executive Chef

I would like to thank the entire MIYC Membership for their well wishes and generosity through the Holiday Season! I hope everyone had a wonderful time with family and friends. As we move into the New Year, a natural time for reflection and looking ahead, you can count on your Club to be full of fun with an array of social, culinary and boating events for you. Make sure to check the calendar often! Meeting the needs and desires of our membership is the Food and Beverage Team’s top priority. We strive to make improvements throughout the busy year. As always, please remember that the lines of communication with me are wide open and I will always make time to be available. Just call ahead to make an appointment to meet. This appointment will make it much easier for me to be undisturbed during our discussion and be prepared to discuss our subject matter in detail. Thank you so much in advance. You know we LOVE to host that special event for you! Help me target areas of improvement in your responses to our monthly survey. Survey research tells us that “Member dining” is consistently ranked as the most important Club activity to Members. There is a strong correlation between overall Member satisfaction and the satisfaction with your dining experience. Facing challenges with an ever-revolving menu rotation is part of our task here in the culinary team. I can tell you honestly, maintaining an exceptional dining program is among the toughest nuts to crack, but when it is, dining becomes a great source of pride to Club Membership,

as it should be. The surveys h e l p m e d e t e r m i n e Membe r s h i p l i k e s and d i s l i k e s . Whoa…I have yet to recover from New Year’s Eve and now I am making myself tired! Happy 2020! See you at the Club! Chef Bob

John Ammerman We are sad to report that John Ammerman lost his battle with cancer last October. John joined our Club in 2010 and became an Equity Member in 2013. After his wife, Nina, passed away in 2013, John met and married Irina. They celebrated their marriage at the Club and were active Members. Irina has chosen not to maintain a Membership as she lives in north Naples.
