LICORICE PIZZA WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON A story about growing up, running around and falling in love in the San Fernando Valley in the early 1970s – an era when the lines between childhood and adulthood got blurry, and the freewheeling ’60s started to give way to political and cultural upheaval, gas shortages and other ’70s headaches. Gary, a teenage actor and entrepreneur, sort-of pursues twentysomething photographer’s assistant Alana, after he meets her while waiting to get his school photograph taken. He enlists her in his schemes and dreams, and together they start a waterbed company, audition for movies, and get involved in a mayoral campaign. The filmmaker fuses the comedic romp of first love and self- discovery, with a debunking of classic Hollywood myths and heroes. The adventures of the two friends (or, rather, flirtatious platonic lovers) cause them to brush up against old and new Hollywood: Sean Penn plays a tough-guy-William Holden doppelgänger, while Bradley Cooper portrays producer Jon Peters (the former hairstylist and boyfriend of Barbra Streisand), depicted as a narcissistic sleaze-bag in polyester. An upbeat, loose, funny, thrilling coming-of-age, comedy- drama. Alana Haim, Cooper Hoffman, Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Bradley Cooper, Benny Safdie. PREMIERES 27TH CLICK TO SEE MORE * Licorice Pizza : the slang term for “LP” (pizza/round, licorice/black), and a chain of record stores in 70s California, which inspired the film’s title. .

HERE’S LOOKING AT YOU TAMMY FAYE
Perfectly titled, referencing its subject’s more- is-more approach to mascara application, The Eyes of Tammy Faye is a biopic, spanning the 1960s to the ’90s, that digs beneath themakeup to explore a truly fascinating character. The film is an intimate look at the extraordinary rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker who, along with her husband Jim, ruled the television airwaves of religion through the 1970s and ’80s. The dynamic duo rose from humble beginnings to create an evangelical empire encompassing a Christian ministry, the world’s largest religious broadcasting network, and a theme park, becoming two of the most recognisable faces in America along the way. THE EFFERVESCENT EVANGELIST WAS A SPARKLING SPLASH OF COLOUR IN AN ERA FILLED WITH DOUR, BIBLE-THUMPING MEN IN DARK SUITS. WRITER HÉLÈNE RAVLICH EXAMINES THE ICONIC FIGURE PROFILED IN THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE , AND THE MOTIVES OF THE WOMAN WHO PLAYS HER.
WATCHING OUT PEOPLE
Renowned for her message of love, accep- tance and prosperity, Tammy Faye became inseparable from her indelible eyelashes, her idiosyncratic singing, and her eagerness to embrace people from all walks of life. Easily the more likable of the two, she was a woman who talked the talk and walked the walk, and her signature style followed her everywhere she went. However, like any quick rise to the top, it wasn’t long before financial improprieties, scheming rivals, and scandal toppled the Bakker’s carefully constructed empire. And when it all crashed and burned, it was before a nationwide televised audience who lapped it up. Instantly recognizable with her iconic makeup and larger-than-life personality, Tammy Faye’s face was plastered across every tabloid in the grocery checkout line – but this time the headlines weren’t always in her favour. But that wasn’t for long. In a world where powerful men, religious or otherwise, inevitably escape scandal with little to no consequences, Tammy Faye stood apart. Unlike her no good cheating ’n’ lying
husband, she never turned away from her faith or forswore her kind and loving version of God for a fire and brimstone replacement. Her heart remained open to the experiences of others, and she rose above her transgressions and evolved beyond tabloid stardom. Her fol- lowers knew that behind all the clothing and makeup was real humanity. On their show, Tammy Faye had always chal- lenged her viewers by inviting guests who might be considered controversial to the av- erage bible-basher. She encouraged her viewers to show compassion and empathy, showing how people whose beliefs and lives seemed foreign were actually not so different. In a key scene in the film, Tammy Faye is seen in interaction with Southern Baptist pastor and fellow televangelist, Jerry Falwell, well known for his fervent homophobia and bigotry. We see her responding to Falwell’s accusations that “feminists and homosexuals”, among other enemies of the religious right, are ruining the fabric of the United States. “I don’t think of them as homosexuals. I just think of them as other human beings that I love,” Tammy Faye says.

“We’re all just people made out of the same old dirt, and God didn’t make any junk,” she continues, while her husband Jim squirms at her radical openheartedness in the presence of the anti-LGBTQ+ Falwell. Later in life, Tammy Faye went on to per- form at Pride events and even judged a Tammy Faye look- alike contest replete with drag queens, and she was a vocal AIDS advocate and a beloved supporter of the community in an era where HIV patients were largely rejected and ostracised. Two-time Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain plays Tammy Faye in the film, starring opposite Andrew Garfield as Jim Bakker, and Chastain also produces the film. She is an actor known for her meticulous preparation and research. Becoming Tammy Faye was no different. Completely con- sumed, she reportedly studied her subject for over seven years, going so far as to memorise all of her mannerisms and vocal inflections learned by watching hours and hours of tape. It is said that building a character based on a well-known, public figure is always a challenge, but the biggest hurdle Chastain said she faced was overcoming how other people perceived Tammy Faye. “I spent years looking at footage of her and never once saw mascara running down her face,” Chastain told an inter- viewer. “Tammy Faye was nothing like the caricature the media fed off of. She was the ordained minister Jim wasn’t. She preached acceptance and compassion and meant it,

and that’s what we wanted people to see in this film. When everyone turned their backs on people with HIV and AIDS, she invited a high profile gay pastor who had AIDS to be on her show. She also hosted Praise The Lord network shows all day long, wrote four books and released twenty-four albums. She never got paid for any of it, she gave her money back to the church.” She also acknowledged the all-male world that Tammy Faye inhabited – which in some ways has changed little over the years – and her impact as a high profile woman. “Women have been punished for being large, and I just mean energy- wise – so in terms of how much space you take up, how much makeup you wear, how loud your voice is, how loud your opin- ion is, how flashy your clothes can be,” Chastain has said. “But then also being punished for owning too many pant suits, or you have short hair. I’m so tired of society telling women how they need to present themselves in the world. And I was so tired of people caring more about how much mascara Tammy Faye Bakker was wearing than the actual incredible things that she did.” Building layer upon layer, just like its subject’s makeup, The Eyes of Tammy Faye tells a story about faith, acceptance, and re-
silience, and promises to be essential viewing. THE EYES OF TAMMY FAYE CLICK TO SEE MORE

The best-known lines are still there of course – ‘Is this a dagger which I see before me” and all the rest – but the story of the Macbeths’ murderous ambition is told with ruthless concentration: at 105 minutes it’s about half the running time of the stage play. The visuals are as stark and stripped down as the text, shot in spectral black-and-white on incredibly stylised sets. A very ‘noir’ film.

Every ticket and every treat purchased will go a long way in helping them to get back on their feet. 19TH JAN–2ND FEB CLICK TO SEE MORE + Enjoy an oasis of cool cinema for summer an outdoor garden bar will be operating at the Hollywood for the duration of the festival.

like that. Having said that, we might get itchy feet and want to escape during the two weeks over Christmas and New Year when the Mount goes crazy, you never know! Have you factored any TV watching into your downtime? Have you got any series queued up? I’m someone who watches a lot of sport, even if I do it for a job! Recently I’ve really got into watching the Ashes series, and loving it. I def- initely wouldn’t call myself a cricket tragic, but I’ve found it so exciting over the last few weeks. Not having to cover it myself has meant that I can really sit back and enjoy it, it’s a totally different way of watching. It’s the same with the Australian Open, I love watch- ing tennis, but it’s such a different experience when you’re there in the thick of it, grinding away. I’m looking forward to just taking it in, which will be really cool. With your holidays plans in mind, what are you wearing over the next few weeks? This is probably TMI, but when I packed my bag to head down here I didn’t even pack underwear or a bra because I really do live in a bikini in summertime! My out of office notifi- cation is on and I’m in my bikini, with a sunhat, no makeup... If someone sees me out they won’t recognise me, seriously. It’s my time to relax and just be, I’m such a summer child that I literally will hardly leave the beach. SKY SUMMER OF SPORT CLICK TO SEE MORE 16 x HD pop-up channels launch on Sky Go covering all the action at the Australian Open tennis tournament, 17th–30th.
A popular Sky Sport presenter whose work has taken her to such prestigious events as the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Kirstie Stanway has had a big year. Feeling more than a little exhausted after returning from Japan via MIQ and then going almost straight into Auckland’s lengthy lock- down, when we chat in late December, she’s ready for a summer of down time, beach days and yes, watching more than a little sport. Where are you right now Kirstie? I’m with my partner at my parents place in Mount Maunganui. I won’t be back in my radio job until January 18th or back to Sky Sports until the rugby kicks off in February, so I’m going to have a LOT of downtime which is amazing! How will you be spending that deliciously lengthy break? I think we’ll spend it right here. I’m so tired that I just want to lie on the beach and do nothing as opposed to traveling around or anything

THE NEWYEAR 2022
QUESTIONNAIRE A LOVELY BUNCH OF OUR PAST CONTRIBUTORS AND SOME OF THE VIEW TEAM, ANSWER THE (SORT OF) REALLY IMPORTANT QUESTIONS FACING US ALL IN 2022.*
TOM SAINSBURY Snapchat Dude and actor, writer, comedian, dancer, director, social media star, satirist, prostitute – and so much more – willing to do anything (ANYTHING!) to be liked. Q : You’re waking up in the brand-new year that is 2022 – what is your very first thought? A : Why did I drink bubbles? Dear God, if you get me through this hangover I’ll become devout. I’ve ruined my New Year Resolutions already. That sort of thing. Q : What is one thing you couldn’t do in 2021 that is first on your to-do list in 2022? A : Perform! Oh I’m going to perform my little heart out in all the venues I can get into. Both theatre and stand up. As much as I can. Q : If you could travel anywhere, near or far, in 2022 where would that be? A : I’ve been doing Duolingo French for 762 days in a row (how do I know?
The app keeps telling me), so I want to go and do a full immersion course somewhere. Maybe New Caledonia? Q : Your dream event to watch or attend in 2022? A : Splore baby. I couldn’t go last year and I’m ready to writhe around and groove out until 4am before having a spicy hot cacao in a teepee beneath an illuminated butterfly in a field. Q : Is there anything that you started doing in 2021 that you intend to keep up in 2022? A : During lockdown I started learning animation through YouTube courses. So definitely that. I love it! I also started teaching myself the piano. So both of those things. Q : Your biggest hope for 2022? A : That authoritarianism is stamped out the world over and that humanity reaches the next stage of consciousness and that climate change is completely combated and that we meet aliens.
